मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
इति सन्दिश्य भगवान् बार्हिषदैरभिपूजित: ।

पश्यतां राजपुत्राणां तत्रैवान्तर्दधे हर: ॥१॥


इति सन्दिश्य भगवान्
thus instructing, Lord (Shiva)
बार्हिषदै:-अभिपूजित:
by the Barhishads (Prachetas), and worshipped
पश्यताम् राज-पुत्राणाम्
as looking on the royal princes
तत्र-एव-अन्तर्दधे हर:
there itself, disappeared Shiva

Lord Shiva instructed the Barhishadas in this manner, and was worshipped by them. Then, as the royal princes looked on, Lord Shiva disappeared there itself.


रुद्रगीतं भगवत: स्तोत्रं सर्वे प्रचेतस: ।

जपन्तस्ते तपस्तेपुर्वर्षाणामयुतं जले ॥२॥


रुद्रगीतम् भगवत: स्तोत्रम्
The (hymn) Rudrageeta, The Lord's hymn
सर्वे प्रचेतस:
all Praachetas
जपन्त:-ते तप:-तेपु:-
repeating they, austerities observed
वर्षाणाम्-अयुतम् जले
for years ten thousand, in water

All the Praachetaas repeated the hymn Rudrageets for The Lord, and observed austerities for ten thousand years standing in the water.


प्राचीनबर्हिषं क्षत्त: कर्मस्वासक्तमानसम् ।

नारदोऽध्यात्मतत्त्वज्ञ: कृपालु: प्रत्यबोधयत् ॥३॥


प्राचीनबर्हिषम् क्षत्त:
Praacheenabarhi, O Vidura
कर्मसु-आसक्त-मानसम्
in ritual devoted minded
नारद:-अध्यात्म-तत्त्वज्ञ:
Naarada, the spiritual Truth knower
कृपालु: प्रत्यबोधयत्
and compassionate, (him) reminded

O Vidura! Praacheenabarhi became devoted to the rituals. The compassionate Naarada and the knower of the the Truth of the Spirit, reminded him.


श्रेयस्त्वं कतमद्राजन् कर्मणाऽऽत्मन ईहसे ।

दु:खहानि सुखावाप्ति: श्रेयस्तन्नेह चेष्यते ॥४॥


श्रेय:-त्वम् कतमत्-राजन्
good you, what kind O King
कर्मणा-आत्मन: ईहसे
by rituals for yourself seek
दु:ख-हानि: सुख-अवाप्ति:
of sorrows cessation, and happiness attainment
श्रेय:-तत्-न-इह च-इष्यते
the good that not in this and expected

O King! what good do you seek for your self by these rituals. The cessation of sorrows and the attainment of happiness cannot be expected to be attained from this.


राजा उवाच -
The King said -
न जानामि महाभाग परं कर्मापविद्धधी: ।

ब्रूहि मे विमलं ज्ञानं येन मुच्येय कर्मभि: ॥५॥


न जानामि महाभाग
do not know, O Blessed One!
परम् कर्म-अपविद्ध-धी:
The Supreme, by rituals devastated mind
ब्रूहि मे विमलम् ज्ञानम्
tell me, the pure knowledge
येन मुच्येय कर्मभि:
by which will be released by actions

O Blessed One! I do not know what is the Supreme good, my mind being devastated by rituals. Do tell me the pure knowledge by which I may be released from the actions.


गृहेषु कूटधर्मेषु पुत्रदारधनार्थधी: ।

न परं विन्दते मूढो भ्राम्यन् संसारवर्त्मसु ॥६॥


गृहेषु कूट-धर्मेषु
in the house, in planning strategies
पुत्र-दार-धन-अर्थ-धी:
in son and wife, wealth and objects mindful
न परम् विन्दते मूढ:
does not The Supreme attain the ignorant
भ्राम्यन् संसार-वर्त्मसु
wandering in transmigration paths

The ignorant person with a mind planning strategies, engaged in son and wife, wealth and other objects, does not attain the Supreme good, and wanders in the paths of transmigration.


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
भो: भो: प्रजापते राजन् पशून् पश्य त्वयाध्वरे ।

संज्ञापिताञ्जीवसङ्घान्निर्घृणेन सहस्रश: ॥७॥


भो: भो: प्रजापते
O Ruler of men!
राजन् पशून् पश्य
O King! Look at the animals
त्वया-अध्वरे
by you in the sacrifices
संज्ञापितान्-जीव-सङ्घान्-
killed creatures multitudes
निर्घृणेन सहस्रश:
mercilessly thousands

O Ruler of men! O King! Look at the multitudes of creatures that you have mercilessly killed as thousands of animals of sacrifices.


एते त्वां सम्प्रतीक्षन्ते स्मरन्तो वैशसं तव ।

सम्परेतमय:कूटैश्छिन्दन्त्युत्थितमन्यव: ॥८॥


एते त्वाम् सम्प्रतीक्षन्ते
these you await for
स्मरन्त: वैशसम् तव
remembering cruelty yours
सम्परेतम्-अय:-कूटै:-
departing to the other world, with iron horns
छिन्दन्ति-उत्थित-मन्यव:
will pierce, with aroused anger

They all are awaiting your departure to the other world, when, by remembering your cruelty, with enroused anger they will pierce you with iron horns.


अत्र ते कथयिष्येऽमुमितिहासं पुरातनम् ।

पुरञ्जनस्य चरितं निबोध गदतो मम ॥९॥


अत्र ते कथयिष्ये-अमुम्-
here (at this juncture) to you will say this
इतिहासम् पुरातनम्
story of old
पुरञ्जनस्य चरितम्
Puranjana story
निबोध गदत: मम
understand, told by me

Here, at this juncture, I will narrate to you a legend, which is the story of Puranjana, understand it which I am talling to you.


आसीत्पुरञ्जनो नाम राजा राजन् बृहच्छ्रवा: ।

तस्याविज्ञातनामाऽऽसीत्सखाविज्ञातचेष्टित: ॥१०॥


आसीत्-पुरञ्जन: नाम
there was Puranjana named
राजा राजन् बृहच्छ्रवा:
king, O King! well known
तस्य-अविज्ञात-नामा-आसीत्-
his unknown named was
सखा-अविज्ञात-चेष्टित:
a friend of unknown activities

O King! There was a well known king named Puranjana. He had a friend, whose name was unknown and so were his activities.


सोऽन्वेषमाण: शरणं बभ्राम पृथिवीं प्रभु: ।

नानुरूपं यदाविन्ददभूत्स विमना इव ॥११॥


स:-अन्वेषमाण: शरणम्
he searching shelter
बभ्राम पृथिवीम् प्रभु:
roamed the earth, the king
न-अनुरूपम् यदा-अविन्दत्-
did not suitable, when found
अभूत्-स: विमना: इव
became he dejected as if

The king roamed about the earth searching for a suitable abode. When he did not find a suitable place, he became dejected as it were.


न साधु मेने ता: सर्वा भूतले यावती: पुर: ।

कामान् कामयमानोऽसौ तस्य तस्योपपत्तये ॥१२॥


न साधु मेने ता: सर्वा:
did not proper understood, those all
भूतले यावती: पुर:
on the earth's surface as many cities
कामान् कामयमान:-असौ
pleasures seeking, this (king)
तस्य तस्य-उपपत्तये
all those yielding

He did not find any city on the surface of the earth as proper for his many pleasures worth yielding.


स एकदा हिमवतो दक्षिणेष्वथ सानुषु ।

ददर्श नवभिर्द्वार्भि: पुरं लक्षितलक्षणाम् ॥१३॥


स: एकदा हिमवत:
he one day, at Himalaya's
दक्षिणेषु-अथ सानुषु
south, then on the ridges
ददर्श नवभि:-द्वार्भि: पुरम्
saw, of nine gates city
लक्षित-लक्षणाम्
showing good features

Then, one day on the southern ridges of the Himaalaya's he saw a city with nine gates exhibiting good features.


प्राकारोपवनाट्टालपरिखैरक्षतोरणै: ।

स्वर्णरौप्यायसै: शृङ्गै: संकुलां सर्वतो गृहै: ॥१४॥


प्राकार-उपवन-अट्टाल-
by boundary walls, gardens, watch-towers,
परिखै:-अक्ष-तोरणै:
moats, eye-holes, and arched gate-ways
स्वर्ण-रौप्य-आयसै: शृङ्गै:
with golden, silver, and iron turrets
संकुलाम् सर्वत: गृहै:
constituting everywhere houses

It was constituted by boundry walls, gardens, watch-towers, moats, eye-holes, and arched gate-ways, and had house with turrets of gold, silver and iron.


नीलस्फटिकवैदूर्यमुक्तामरकतारुणै: ।

क्लृप्तहर्म्यस्थलीं दीप्तां श्रिया भोगवतीमिव ॥१५॥


नील-स्फटिक-वैदूर्य-
sapphires, crystals, cat's-eye gems,
मुक्ता-मरकत-अरुणै:
pearls, emeralds, rubies,
क्लृप्त-हर्म्य-स्थलीम् दीप्ताम्
paved mansion floors splendorous
श्रिया भोगवतीम्-इव
with radiance, Bhogavati (city of pleasures) like

The floors of the mansions were paved with sapphires, crystals, cat's-eye gems, pearls, emeralds, rubies, and was splenderous with radiance, like the city Bhogvati.


सभाचत्वररथ्याभिराक्रीडायतनापणै: ।

चैत्यध्वजपताकाभिर्युक्तां विद्रुमवेदिभि: ॥१६॥


सभा-चत्वर-रथ्याभि:-
assembly halls, crossings, highways,
आक्रीडा-आयतन-आपणै:
gambling houses, houses, market places,
चैत्य-ध्वज-पताकाभि:-
rest houses, banners, flags
युक्ताम् विद्रुम-वेदिभि:
having coral terraces

The city was provided with assembly halls, crossings, highways, gambling houses, houses, market places, rest houses, banners and flags and terraces of coral.


पुर्यास्तु बाह्योपवने दिव्यद्रुमलताकुले ।

नदद्विहङ्गालिकुलकोलाहलजलाशये ॥१७॥


पुर्या:-तु बाह्य-उपवने
in that city was, on the outside a park
दिव्य-द्रुम-लता-आकुले
with celestial trees, creepers' clusters
नदद्-विहङ्ग-अलि-कुल-
cooing of birds, bees 'swarms
कोलाहल-जल-आशये
noise was on the water body (the lake)

On the outside of the city was a park where there were celestial trees, and clusters of creepers, and on the water bodies, or lakes the birds were cooing and it was full of the noise of swarms of humming bees.


हिमनिर्झरविप्रुष्मत्कुसुमाकरवायुना ।

चलत्प्रवालविटपनलिनीतटसम्पदि ॥१८॥


हिम-निर्झर-विप्रुष्मत्-
cool streams spraying
कुसुम-आकर-वायुना
flowers hedges, by the breeze
चलत्-प्रवाल-विटप-
waving leaves the boughs of the trees
नलिनी-तट-सम्पदि
the lake's edges were enriched

The edges of the lake were enriched by the leaves on the boughs of the trees swaying in the cool breeze sprayed by the water of the stream.


नानारण्यमृगव्रातैरनाबाधे मुनिव्रतै: ।

आहूतं मन्यते पान्थो यत्र कोकिलकूजितै: ॥१९॥


नाना-अरण्य-मृग-व्रातै:-
by various wild animals' species
अना-बाधे मुनिव्रतै:
was no restriction (non-violent) sages like
आहूतम् मन्यते पान्थ:
invited felt travellers
यत्र कोकिल-कूजितै:
where by cuckoo's calls

Where there was no restriction due to the sages like non violent various spieces of wild animals. And where the travellers felt invited by the calls of the cukoo.


यदृच्छयाऽऽगतां तत्र ददर्श प्रमदोत्तमाम् ।

भृत्यैर्दशभिरायान्तीमेकैकशतनायकै: ॥२०॥


यदृच्छया-आगताम् तत्र
by chance had come there
ददर्श प्रमदा-उत्तमाम्
saw damsel charming
भृत्यै:-दशभि:-आयान्तीम्-
with attendents ten coming
एक-एक-शत-नायकै:
each one with hundred wives

There came, by chance a very charming damsel with ten attendents. He saw each one coming with hundred wives.


पञ्चशीर्षाहिना गुप्तां प्रतीहारेण सर्वत: ।

अन्वेषमाणामृषभमप्रौढां कामरूपिणीम् ॥२१॥


पञ्च-शीर्ष-अहिना गुप्ताम्
by five hooded serpent guarded
प्रतीहारेण सर्वत:
as bodyguard on all sides
अन्वेषमाणाम्-ऋषभम्-
looking for a husband,
अप्रौढाम् काम-रूपिणीम्
(she) sixteen years of age, assuming any form at will

She was sixteen years of age and was in quest for a husband. She could take on any form at will and was gaurded by a five hooded serpant as a body guard, on all sides.


सुनासां सुदतीं बालां सुकपोलां वराननाम् ।

समविन्यस्तकर्णाभ्यां बिभ्रतीं कुण्डलश्रियम् ॥२२॥


सुनासाम् सुदतीम् बालाम्
with shapely nose, beautiful teeth, the girl
सुकपोलाम् वराननाम्
had lovely cheeks, a charming face
समविन्यस्त कर्णाभ्याम्
in symmetrical ears
बिभ्रतीम् कुण्डल-श्रियम्
were adorned earrings beautiful

The girl had a charming face with a shapely nose, beautiful teeth, lovely cheeks, a charming face, and the earings adorned in the symmetrical ears were beautiful.


पिङ्गनीवींसुश्रोणीं श्यामां कनकमेखलाम् ।

पद्भ्यां क्वणद्भ्यां चलन्तीं नूपुरैर्देवतामिव ॥२३॥


पिङ्ग-नीवीम् सुश्रोणीम्
in a yellow sari, delicate waist
श्यामाम् कनक-मेखलाम्
the beautiful one (wore) golden girdle
पद्भ्याम् क्वणद्भ्याम्
in the feet tinkling
चलन्तीम् नूपुरै:-देवताम्-इव
as she moved the anklets, goddess like

The beautiful one, had a yellow sari and on her delicate waist she wore a golden girdle. The anklets on her feet made a tinkling sound as she moved about, she looked like a goddess.


स्तनौ व्यञ्जितकैशोरौ समवृतौ निरन्तरौ ।

वस्त्रान्तेन निगूहन्तीं ब्रीडया गजगामिनीम् ॥२४॥


स्तनौ व्यञ्जित-कैशोरौ
breasts declaring her youth
समवृतौ निरन्तरौ
symmetrical and close knit
वस्त्र-अन्तेन निगूहन्तीम्
by the garment's end covering
ब्रीडया गज-गामिनीम्
shyly, with an elephant like gait

Her two breasts were symmetrical and close-knit and were as though declaring her youth, which she was shyly covering with the end of her garment. She had an elepahant like gait.


तामाह ललितं वीर: सव्रीडस्मितशोभनाम् ।

स्निग्धेनापाङ्गपुङ्खेन स्पृष्ट: प्रेमोद्भ्रमद्भ्रुवा ॥२५॥


ताम्-आह ललितम् वीर:
to her said softly, gallant youth
सव्रीड-स्मित-शोभनाम्
shyly smiling with charm
स्निग्धेन-अपाङ्ग-पुङ्खेन
by affectionate, corner of the eyes' glances as shafts
स्पृष्ट: प्रेम-उद्भ्रमद्-भ्रुवा
pierced for love dancing eyebrows

The gallant youth who was pierced by the shaft like affectionate sidelong glances, in a soft voice spoke to her, who was smiling charmingly and whose eyebrows danced in quest of love.


का त्वं कञ्जपलाशाक्षि कस्यासीह कुत: सति ।

इमामुपपुरीं भीरु किं चिकीर्षसि शंस मे ॥२६॥


का त्वम् कञ्ज-पलाश-अक्षि
'Who are you, lotus petal eyed
कस्य-असि-इह कुत: सति
whose (daughter) are you, here from where are you
इमाम्-उपपुरीम् भीरु
to the outskirts of the city, O Timid One!
किम् चिकीर्षसि शंस मे
what do you intend, tell me

O timid One! Tell me, your eyes are like the petals of the lotus, who are you, whose daughter are you, from where have you come here, and what do you intend to do in the outskirt of the city.


क एतेऽनुपथा ये त एकादश महाभटा: ।

एता वा ललना: सुभ्रु कोऽयं तेऽहि: पुर:सर: ॥२७॥


के एते-अनुपथा:
who are these attendents
ये ते एकादश महा:-भटा:
who are these eleven great warriors
एता: वा ललना: सुभ्रु
these or young women, O beautiful eyebrow lady!
क:-अयम् ते-अहि: पुर:सर:
Who this your serpent leading

'O Lady with beautiful eyebrows! Who are these attendents, the eleven great warriors, or these young women, and who is this serpant to you who is leading?'


त्वं ह्रीर्भवान्यस्यथ वाग्रमा पतिं विचिन्वती किं मुनिवद्रहो वने ।

त्वदङ्घ्रिकामाप्तसमस्तकामं क्व पद्मकोश: पतित: कराग्रात् ॥२८॥


त्वम् ह्री: भवानी-असि-अथ-
(are you) bashfulness, Paarvati are then
वाक्-रमा पतिम् विचिन्वती
Vaak or Ramaa, husband looking for
किम् मुनि-वत्-रह:- वने
what sage like alone in the forest
त्वत्-अङ्घ्रि-काम-
your feet desiring
आप्त-समस्त-कामम्
has attained all desires
क्व पद्म-कोश:
(or if not) where is the lotus bud
पतित: कराग्रात्
slipped from fingers

Are you bashfulness, or Paarvati, or Vaak or Ramaa, looking for your husband like a sage, alone in the forest. The one who covets your feet has all desires fulfilled. If it is not so, where has the lotus bud slipped from your fingers?


नासां वरोर्वन्यतमा भुविस्पृक् पुरीमिमां वीरवरेण साकम् ।

अर्हस्यलङ्कर्तुमदभ्रकर्मणा लोकं परं श्रीरिव यज्ञपुंसा ॥२९॥


न-आसाम् वरोरु-अन्यतमा
not are O well-shaped thighed damsel! any of these,
भुवि-स्पृक् पुरीम्-इमाम्
by touching the ground, city this
वीर-वरेण साकम्
a hero eminent with
अर्हसि-अलङ्कर्तुम्-
(you) can grace
अदभ्र-कर्मणा
with many prowess
लोकम् परम् श्री:-इव
the real Supreme Laxmi like
यज्ञपुंसा
with Yagya Purush (Vishnu)

O beautiful shaped thighs' damsel! You are not any of these, because your feet touch the ground. You can very well grace this city with an eminent hero of many prowesses like me, just as Shree, goddess Laxmi graces the Supreme realm of Vaikunth with Yagya Purusha, Vishnu.


यदेष मापाङ्गविखण्डितेन्द्रियं सव्रीडभावस्मितविभ्रमद्भ्रुवा ।

त्वयोपसृष्टो भगवान्मनोभव: प्रबाधतेऽथानुगृहाण शोभने ॥३०॥


यत्-एष मा-अपाङ्ग-
because this me, by side-long glances,
विखण्डित-इन्द्रियम्
shattered senses
सव्रीड-भाव-स्मित-
with coyness smiling
विभ्रमद्-भ्रुवा
wandering eyebrows
त्वया-उपसृष्ट:
by you instigated
भगवान्-मनोभव:
The Lord of Love
प्रबाधते-अथ-
is bothering me, so then
अनुगृहाण शोभने
be gracious to me, Beautiful One!

'Because my senses are shattered by your side-long glances and The Lord of Love is bothering me, instigated by your coyful smile and wandering eyes. So then, be gracious to me O beautiful One.'


त्वदाननं सुभ्रु सुतारलोचनम् व्यालम्बिनीलालकवृन्दसंवृतम् ।

उन्नीय मे दर्शय वल्गुवाचकं यद्व्रीडया नाभिमुखं शुचिस्मिते ॥३१॥


त्वत्-आननम् सुभ्रु
your face O Beautiful Eye browed dame!
सुतार-लोचनम् व्यालम्बि-
big eyes, hanging
नील-अलक-वृन्द संवृतम्
dark tresses cluster, screened
उन्नीय मे दर्शय
lifting up show me
वल्गु-वाचकम् यत्-व्रीडया
sweet spoken, which coyly
न-अभिमुखम् शुचि-स्मिते
is not in front, O Sweet smiling One!

O Beautiful eyebrowed damsel! Show me your sweet spoken face with big eyes, lifting up the clusters of dark tresses by which it is screened, and which is not in front of me because of your shyness, O sweet smiling One!


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
इत्थं पुरञ्जनं नारी याचमानमधीरवत् ।

अभ्यनन्दत तं वीरं हसन्ती वीर मोहिता ॥३२॥


इत्थम् पुरञ्जनम् नारी
like this, to Puranjana, the lady
याचमानम्-अधीरवत्
begging without patience
अभ्यनन्दत तम् वीरम्
greeted him the hero
हसन्ती वीर मोहिता
laughingly, by the hero enamoured

In this way, being begged impatiently by Puranjana, the lady laughingly greeted the hero, enamoured by him.


न विदाम वयं सम्यक्कर्तारं पुरुषर्षभ ।

आत्मनश्च परस्यापि गोत्रं नाम च यत्कृतम् ॥३३॥


न विदाम वयम् सम्यक्-
do not know we fully
कर्तारम् पुरुषर्षभ
the father, O Best of the men!
आत्मन:-च परस्य-अपि
of yourself of others also
गोत्रम् नाम च यत्-कृतम्
family name or name, which was given

O Best of the Men! We do not know well who is our father nor our or the others name, nor the family name which was given.


इहाद्य सन्तमात्मानं विदाम न तत: परम् ।

येनेयं निर्मिता वीर पुरी शरणमात्मन: ॥३४॥


इह-अद्य सन्तम्-आत्मानम्
here today present, self
विदाम न तत: परम्
know, not that beyond
येन-इयम् निर्मिता वीर
by whom constructed, O Hero!
पुरी शरणम्-आत्मन:
this city shelter ours

O Brave One! We only know ourselves being present here, nothing beyond that. We also do not know who built this city which is our abode.


एते सखाय: सख्यो मे नरा नार्यश्च मानद ।

सुप्तायां मयि जागर्ति नागोऽयं पालयन् पुरीम् ॥३५॥


एते सखाय: सख्य: मे
these are friends and female friends
नरा: नार्य:-च मानद
men and women, O Courteous One!
सुप्तायाम् मयि जागर्ति
when sleeping I am, keeps awake
नाग:-अयम् पालयन् पुरीम्
serpent this, guarding the city

O Courteous One! These men and women are my male and female companions. When I am sleeping, this serpant guards the city.


दिष्ट्याऽऽगतोऽसि भद्रं ते ग्राम्यान् कामानभीप्ससे ।

उद्वहिष्यामि तांस्तेऽहं स्वबन्धुभिररिन्दम ॥३६॥


दिष्ट्या-आगत:-असि
fortunately have come
भद्रम् ते ग्राम्यान्
may all be well with you, base
कामान्-अभीप्ससे
pleasures seeking
उद्वहिष्यामि तान्-ते-
will carry out, those, yours
अहम् स्व-बन्धुभि:-अरिन्दम
I, with own friends, O Destroyer of foes!

O Destroyer of foes! Fortunately you have come seeking base sensuous pleasures. I with my friends will secure all those pleasures which you long for.


इमां त्वमधितिष्ठस्व पुरीं नवमुखीं विभो ।

मयोपनीतान् गृह्णान: कामभोगान् शतं समा: ॥३७॥


इमाम् त्वम्-अधितिष्ठस्व
this you inhabit
पुरीम् नव-मुखीम् विभो
city, nine gates having, O Master!
मया-उपनीतान् गृह्णान:
by me brought, accept
काम-भोगान् शतम् समा:
desired pleasures, for hundred years

O Master! You inhabit this city of nine gates. Here, enjoy your desired pleasures catered by me, for a hundred years.


कं नु त्वदन्यं रमये ह्यरतिज्ञमकोविदम् ।

असम्परायाभिमुखमश्वस्तनविदं पशुम् ॥३८॥


कम् नु त्वत्-अन्यम् रमये
whom indeed, yourself other than, delight (I)
हि-अरतिज्ञम्-अकोविदम्
of course, unaware of enjoyment, ignorant
असम्पराय-अभिमुखम्-
careless of other world and uncommitted to duties
अश्वस्तन-विदम् पशुम्
future not knowing, a brute

Other than you, in whom indeed am I to delight? Not ofcourse in a brute who is unmindful of the other world, uncommited to duties, and does not know the future.


धर्मो ह्यत्रार्थकामौ च प्रजानन्दोऽमृतं यश: ।

लोका विशोका विरजा यान् न केवलिनो विदु: ॥३९॥


धर्म: हि-अत्र-अर्थ-कामौ च
religion itself here, is riches and pleasures
प्रजा-आनन्द:-अमृतम् यश:
having a son the joy, liberation, fame
लोका: विशोका: विरजा:
people sorrow less, pure
यान् न केवलिन: विदु:
which, do not the recluse know

In this religion of a house holder there are only worldly riches, sense pleasures, the joy of having a son, liberation granting fame, sorrowless pure people, which the recluses do not know of.


पितृदेवर्षिमर्त्यानां भूतानामत्मनश्च ह ।

क्षेम्यं वदन्ति शरणं भवेऽस्मिन् यद् गृहाश्रम: ॥४०॥


पितृ-देव-ऋषि-मर्त्यानाम्
the manes, gods, sages, the mortals
भूतानाम्-आत्मन:-च ह
and beings, for self and indeed
क्षेम्यम् वदन्ति शरणम्
benefitting speak of the asylum
भवे-अस्मिन् यत् गृह-आश्रम:
in the world this, that house hold

The manes, gods, sages, the mortals and other beings, and for the householders themselves, declare that in this world the house hold is a benefitting and protecting asylum.


का नाम वीर विख्यातं वदान्यं प्रियदर्शनम् ।

न वृणीत प्रियं प्राप्तं मादृशी त्वादृशं पतिम् ॥४१॥


का नाम वीर विख्यातम्
Which (woman) indeed O Brave One! renowned,
वदान्यम् प्रिय-दर्शनम्
generous, charming
न वृणीत प्रियम् प्राप्तम्
will not accept, beloved having got
मादृशी त्वादृशम् पतिम्
like me, yourself like husband

O Brave One! Which woman like me, would not accept having got a husband as renowned, generous, charming and beloved like yourself.


कस्या मनस्ते भुवि भोगिभोगयो: स्त्रिया न सज्जेद्भुजयोर्महाभुज ।

योऽनाथवर्गाधिमलं घृणोद्धतस्मितावलोकेन चरत्यपोहितुम् ॥४२॥


कस्या: मन:-ते भुवि
what (woman's) mind, your, on this earth
भोगि-भोगयो: स्त्रिया: न
serpent like bodied, women will not
सज्जेत्-भुजयो:-महाभुज
appeal arms, O mighty armed One!
य:-अनाथ-वर्ग-अधिमलम्
who destitute class, forlorn
घृणा-उद्धत-स्मित-अवलोकेन
compassionately raised smiling glances
चरति-अपोहितुम्
roams to wipe out

O Mighty armed One! To what woman, on this earth, your serpant body like rounded arms will not appeal, who is roaming about to wipe out the distress of the destitute and forlorn class , with smiling glances.


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
इति तौ दम्पती तत्र समुद्य समयं मिथ: ।

तां प्रविश्य पुरीं राजन्मुमुदाते शतं समा: ॥४३॥


इति तौ दम्पती तत्र
thus that couple there
समुद्य समयम् मिथ:
agreeing, on the spot mutually
ताम् प्रविश्य पुरीम्
that entering city
राजन्-मुमुदाते शतम् समा:
O King! Enjoyed for hundred years

O King! On that spot, the couple, with a mutual agreement, entered that city and enjoyed there for a hundred years.


उपगीयमानो ललितं तत्र तत्र च गायकै: ।

क्रीडन् परिवृत: स्त्रीभिर्ह्रदिनीमाविशच्छुचौ ॥४४॥


उपगीयमान: ललितम्
being sung of gloriously
तत्र तत्र च गायकै:
everywhere and by panegyrists
क्रीडन् परिवृत: स्त्रीभि:-
sporting surrounded by women
ह्रदिनीम्-आविशत्-शुचौ
in the river, entered in the summer season

Puranjana's glories were being sung by the panegyrists, everywhere. In the summer season he entered the river to sport surrounded by women.


सप्तोपरि कृता द्वार: पुरस्तस्यास्तु द्वे अध: ।

पृथग्विषयगत्यर्थं तस्यां य: कश्चनेश्वर: ॥४५॥


सप्त-उपरि कृता: द्वार:
seven in the upper were constructed gates
पुर:-तस्या:-तु-द्वे अध:
in the city that and two lower
पृथक्-विषय गत्यर्थम्
for different rulers wanting to go
तस्याम् य: कश्चन्-ईश्वर:
in that, which ever the ruler

In that city seven gates were constructed on the upper side and two on the lower side for the different rulers wanting to go, in that city, who so ever was a ruler.


पञ्च द्वारस्तु पौरस्त्या दक्षिणैका तथोत्तरा ।

पश्चिमे द्व अमूषां ते नामानि नृप वर्णये ॥४६॥


पञ्च द्वार:-तु पौरस्त्या:
five gates indeed, were to the west
दक्षिण-एका तथा-उत्तरा
towards the south one, and to the north
पश्चिमे द्वे अमूषाम् ते
and to the west two, of their to you
नामानि नृप वर्णये
the names, O King! Will say

Five of the gates were towards the west, one towards the south and one towards the north and two of them were towards the west. Their names I will now tell O King!.


खद्योताऽऽविर्मुखी च प्राग्द्वारावेकत्र निर्मिते ।

विभ्राजितं जनपदं याति ताभ्यां द्युमत्सख: ॥४७॥


खद्योत-आविर्मुखी च
Khadyota and Aavirmukhee
प्राक्-द्वारौ-एकत्र निर्मिते
the eastern two gates, in one place were built
विभ्राजितम् जनपदम् याति
to the Vibhraajita town goes
ताभ्याम् द्युमत्-सख:
from there, with Dyumata friend

On the eastern side are two gates built at one place, namely Khadyota and Aavirmukha. Through which Puranjana travelles to the town of Vibhraajita with the friend Dyumata.


नलिनी नालिनी च प्राग्द्वारावेकत्र निर्मिते ।

अवधूतसखस्ताभ्यां विषयं याति सौरभम् ॥४८॥


नलिनी नालिनी च
Nalinee and Naalinee
प्राक्-द्वारौ-एकत्र निर्मिते
eastern gates two, at one place built
अवधूत-सख: ताभ्याम्
with Avadhoot friend from them
विषयम् याति सौरभम्
territory goes to Saurabha

Again on the eastern side two adjecent gates are made. From where he goes to and fro to the territory of Saurabha with the friend Avadhoota.


मुख्या नाम पुरस्तात् द्वास्तयाऽऽपणबहूदनौ ।

विषयौ याति पुरराड्रसज्ञविपणान्वित: ॥४९॥


मुख्या नाम पुरस्तात्
Mukhyaa named eastern
द्वा:-तया-आपण-बहूदनौ
entrance, through it, Aapana and Bahoodana
विषयौ याति पुरराट्-
two cities goes to, the ruler
रसज्ञ-विपण-अन्वित:
Rasagya and Vipana accompanied by

The other eastern entrence is named Mukhya. Through it the ruler goes to the cities Aapana and Bahoodana, accompanied by the friends Rasagya and Vipana.


पितृहूर्नृप पुर्या द्वार्दक्षिणेन पुरञ्जन: ।

राष्ट्रं दक्षिणपञ्चालं याति श्रुतधरान्वित: ॥५०॥


पितृहू:-नृप पुर्या:
Pitrihoo O King! Of the city
द्वा:-दक्षिणेन पुरञ्जन:
is the gate to the south, Puranjana
राष्ट्रम् दक्षिण पञ्चालम्
to the kingdom on the south of Paanchaala
याति श्रुतधर-अन्वित:
goes, Shrutadhara followed by

O King! There is a gate towards the south of that city which is called Pitrihoo, through which Puranjana went to the kingdom on the south of Panchaala accompanied by Shrutadhara.


देवहूर्नाम पुर्या द्वा उत्तरेण पुरञ्जन: ।

राष्ट्रमुत्तरपाञ्चालं याति श्रुतधरान्वित: ॥५१॥


देवहू:-नाम पुर्या: द्वा:
Devahoo named, city's gate
उत्तरेण पुरञ्जन:
in north by which Puranjana
राष्ट्रम्-उत्तर-पाञ्चालम्
the kingdom of northern Paanchaala
याति श्रुतधर-अन्वित:
goes to, Shrutadhara accompanied by

Puranjana went through the city's gate named Devahoo, on the northern side, to the kingdom of Northern Panchaala accompanied by Shrutadhara.


आसुरी नाम पश्चाद् द्वास्तया याति पुरञ्जन: ।

ग्रामकं नाम विषयं दुर्मदेन समन्वित: ॥५२॥


आसुरी नाम पश्चात् द्वा:-
Aasuri named western gate
तया याति पुरञ्जन:
by that goes Puranjana
ग्रामकम् नाम विषयम्
to Graamaka named territory
दुर्मदेन समन्वित:
with Durmada following

Puranjana goes to the territory of Graamaka through the western gate named Aasuri, followed by Durmada.


निरृतिर्नाम पश्चाद् द्वास्तया याति पुरञ्जन: ।

वैशसं नाम विषयं लुब्धकेन समन्वित: ॥५३॥


निरृति:-नाम पश्चाt द्वा-
Nirriti named western entrance
तया याति पुरञ्जन:
by that goes Puranjana
वैशसम् नाम विषयम्
to Vaishasa named territory
लुब्धकेन समन्वित:
with Lubdhaka as company

Puranjana, through the western gate named Nirriti, goes to the territory named Vaishasa with Lubdhaka as company.


अन्धावमीषां पौराणां निर्वाक्पेशस्कृतावुभौ ।

अक्षण्वतामधिपतिस्ताभ्यां याति करोति च ॥५४॥


अन्धौ-अमीषाम् पौराणाम्
(two) blind of these citizens
निर्वाक्-पेशस्कृतौ-उभौ
Nirvak Peshaskrita both
अक्षण्वताम्-अधिपति:
of the eyed peoples' ruler (Puranjana)
ताभ्याम् याति करोति च
by them (their advice) goes, does and

Of these citizens, there are two blind citizens, named Nirvaak and Peshaskrita, both. The king Puranjana, even though the ruler of the people with eyes, goes and acts according to their advice.


स यर्ह्यन्त:पुरगतो विषूचीनसमन्वित: ।

मोहं प्रसादं हर्षं वा याति जायात्मजोद्भवम् ॥५५॥


स: यर्हि-अन्त:पुर-गत:
he when, to the inner chambers went
विषूचीन-समन्वित:
Vishoochin followed by
मोहम् प्रसादम् हर्षम् वा
infatuation, complacence, or joy
याति जाया-आत्मज-उद्भवम्
went into, by wife and sons' instigated

When he went to the inner chambers, accompanied by Vishoochin, he went into infatuation, complacence or joy, instigated by the wife or the sons.


एवं कर्मसु संसक्त: कामात्मा वञ्चितोऽबुध: ।

महिषी यद्यदीहेत तत्तदेवान्ववर्तत ॥५६॥


एवम् कर्मसु संसक्त:
thus in actions involved
काम-आत्मा वञ्चित:-अबुध:
sensuous minded, cheated foolish
महिषी यत्-यत्-ईहेत
the queen what all wishes
तत्-तत्-एव-अनुवर्तत
all that only followed

Thus, he, whose mind was given to sense gratification, was cheeted and foolishly followed only that which the queen wanted.


क्वचित्पिबन्त्यां पिबति मदिरां मदविह्वल: ।

अश्नन्त्यां क्वचिदश्नाति जक्षत्यां सह जक्षिति ॥५७॥


क्वचित्-पिबन्त्याम् पिबति
when she drinks, drinks
मदिराम् मद-विह्वल:
wine, by wine intoxicated
अश्नन्त्याम् क्वचित्-अश्नाति
when she eats, when-ever, he eats
जक्षत्याम् सह जक्षिति
when she chews, together chews

Whenever she drank wine, he also drank, intoxicated by the wine. When she ate he also ate and whenever she chewed he also chewed together.


क्वचिद्गायति गायन्त्यां रुदत्यां रुदति क्वचित् ।

क्वचिद् हसन्त्यां हसति जल्पन्त्यामनु जल्पति ॥५८॥


क्वचित्-गायति गायन्त्याम्
sometimes sings, when she sings
रुदत्याम् रुदति क्वचित्
when weeping weeps sometimes
क्वचिद् हसन्त्याम् हसति
sometimes when she laughs, he laughs
जल्पन्त्याम्-अनु जल्पति
when she is speaking he speaks after her

Whenever she sings, he sings. When she weeps he also weeps. Sometimes, when she laughs he laughs, and when she speeks, he speeks together with her.


क्वचिद्धावति धावन्त्यां तिष्ठन्त्यामनु तिष्ठति ।

अनु शेते शयानायामन्वास्ते क्वचिदासतीम् ॥५९॥


क्वचित्-धावति धावन्त्याम्
sometimes runs, when she runs
तिष्ठन्त्याम्-अनु तिष्ठति
when she stops he stops
अनु शेते शयानायाम्-
sleeps after, when she sleeps
अनु-आस्ते क्वचित्-आसतीम्
like her sits whenever she sits

He runs whenever she runs, and stops when she stops. He sleeps when she sleeps and likewise he sits when she sits.


क्वचिच्छृणोति शृण्वन्त्यां पश्यन्त्यामनु पश्यति ।

क्वचिज्जिघ्रति जिघ्रन्त्यां स्पृशन्त्यां स्पृशति क्वचित् ॥६०॥


क्वचित्-शृणोति शृण्वन्त्याम्
sometimes listens, when she listens
पश्यन्त्याम्-अनु पश्यति
when she sees, after her looks
क्वचित्-जिघ्रति जिघ्रन्त्याम्
sometimes smells, when she smells
स्पृशन्त्याम् स्पृशति क्वचित्
when she touches he touches sometimes

Sometimes, when she listens he also listens, and when she looks, he also looks after her. Sometimes when she smells even he smells and when she touches, he also touches.


क्वचिच्च शोचतीं जायामनुशोचति दीनवत् ।

अनुहृष्यति हृष्यन्त्यां मुदितामनु मोदते ॥६१॥


क्वचित्-च शोचतीम् जायाम्-
sometimes when and sorrowful the wife
अनुशोचति दीनवत्
he is sorrowful, afflicted as if
अनुहृष्यति हृष्यन्त्याम्
rejoices, when she rejoices
मुदिताम्-अनु मोदते
when she is happy, after her he is happy

Sometimes when his wife is sorrowful he is sorrowful after her, and when she rejoices, he rejoices, and when she feels happy, he is happy after her.


विप्रल्ब्धो महिषैवं सर्वप्रकृतिवञ्चित: ।

नेच्छन्ननुकरोत्यज्ञ: क्लैव्यात्क्रीडामृगो यथा ॥६२॥


विप्रल्ब्ध: महिषा-एवम्
deluded, by the queen thus
सर्व-प्रकृति-वञ्चित:
all nature lost
न-इच्छन्-अनुकरोत्-अज्ञ:
not willing follows ignorant
क्लैव्यात्-क्रीडा-मृग: यथा
helplessly, amusement monkey like

He was thus deluded by the queen and he involunterily, ignorantly and helplessly did what she did, having lost all his own nature, like a monkey kept for entertainment.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे पुरञ्जनोपाख्याने पञ्चविंशोऽध्याय: ॥२५॥


Thus ends the twenty-fifth discourse forming part of the parable of Puranjana, in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
