नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
स एकदा महेष्वासो रथं पञ्चाश्वमाशुगम् ।
द्वीपं द्विचक्रमेकाक्षं त्रिवेणुं पञ्चबन्धुरम् ॥१॥
स: एकदा महेष्वास:
he one day, with a large bow
रथम् पञ्च-अश्वम्-आशु-गम्
in a chariot of five horses of good speed
द्वीपम् द्विचक्रम्-एकाक्षम्
of two poles, two wheels, one axle,
त्रिवेणुम् पञ्च-बन्धुरम्
three flag staffs, and five cords
He, Puranjana, one day, with his large bow, mounted a chariot of five horses, having a good speed, and which had two poles, two wheels, one axle, three flag staffs, and five cords……
एकरश्म्येकदमनमेकनीडं द्विकूबरम् ।
पञ्चप्रहरणं सप्तवरूथं पञ्चविक्रमम् ॥२॥
एक-रश्मि-एक-दमनम्-
one rein, one charioteer,
एक-नीडम् द्वि-कूबरम्
one seat, two poles (for the yoke)
पञ्च-प्रहरणम् सप्त-वरूथम्
five recesses, seven protections
पञ्च-विक्रमम्
five kinds of motions
The chariot had one rein, one charioteer, one seat, two poles for the yoke, five recesses, seven protections and five types of motions of movement.
हैमोपस्करमारुह्य स्वर्णवर्माक्षयेषुधि: ।
एकादशचमूनाथ: पञ्चप्रस्थमगाद्वनम् ॥३॥
हैम-उपस्करम्-आरुह्य
with golden ornaments, mounting
स्वर्ण-वर्म-अक्षय-इषुधि:
in golden armour, inexhaustible quiver
एकादश-चमू-नाथ:
with the eleventh army general
पञ्चप्रस्थम्-अगात्-वनम्
to Panchaprastha went forest
He, with golden ornaments, clad in a golden armour, equipped with an inexhaustible quiver, accompanied by his eleventh army general, mounted the chariot and went to the forest Panchaprastha.
चचार मृगयां तत्र दृप्त आत्तेषुकार्मुक: ।
विहाय जायामतदर्हा मृगव्यसनलालस: ॥४॥
चचार मृगयाम् तत्र दृप्त:
conducted hunting, there proudly
आत्त-इषु-कार्मुक:
holding arrows and bow
विहाय जायाम्-अतदर्हा
leaving (behind) the wife, undeserving
मृग-व्यसन-लालस:
hunting passion given to
The proud king, with arrows and bow in hand hunted in that forest, leaving behind his wife undeserving of such treatment, as he was given to the passion of hunting.
आसुरीं वृत्तिमाश्रित्य घोरात्मा निरनुग्रह: ।
न्यहनन्निशितैर्बाणैर्वनेषु वनगोचरान् ॥५॥
आसुरीम् वृत्तिम्-आश्रित्य
demonic nature giving in to
घोर-आत्मा निरनुग्रह:
cruel minded, unkind
न्यहनन्-निशितै:-बाणै:-
killed by sharp arrows
वनेषु वन-गोचरान्
in the forests, the wild animals
He gave in to the nature of demons, and cruel minded, unkind, he killed with sharp arrows the wild animals in the forests.
तीर्थेषु प्रतिदृष्टेषु राजा मेध्यान् पशून् वने ।
यावदर्थमलं लुब्धो हन्यादिति नियम्यते ॥६॥
तीर्थेषु प्रतिदृष्टेषु राजा
in holy occasions, pointed (by scriptures), a king
मेध्यान् पशून् वने
the pure animals, in the forest
यावत्-अर्थम्-अमलम् लुब्ध:
until as required, if very fond of (hunting)
हन्यात्-इति नियम्यते
may kill, this is ruled
In the scriptures it is pointed, and it is ruled out, that a king for the purpose of holy occassions, as Shraadha etc., and if it is required and also if he is very inclined to hunting, may kill the pure animals.
य एवं कर्म नियतं विद्वान् कुर्वीत मानव: ।
कर्मणा तेन राजेन्द्र ज्ञानेन न स लिप्यते ॥७॥
य: एवम् कर्म नियतम्
he who thus, action ruled
विद्वान् कुर्वीत मानव:
wise does a person
कर्मणा तेन राजेन्द्र
by action those, O King!
ज्ञानेन न स: लिप्यते
by wisdom, is not he tainted
O King! A wise person who, thus, the ruled actions performs with wisdom, he is not tainted by those actions.
अन्यथा कर्म कुर्वाणो मानारूढो निबध्यते ।
गुणप्रवाहपतितो नष्टप्रज्ञो व्रजत्यध: ॥८॥
अन्यथा कर्म कुर्वाण:
otherwise, actions performing
मान-आरूढ: निबध्यते
with ego inflated, is bound
गुण-प्रवाह-पतित:
in the transmigration flow falling into
नष्ट-प्रज्ञ: व्रजति-अध:
losing the judgement, descends downwards
Performing the actions otherwise, and with an inflated ego, he is bound by the actions, and falls into the flow of transmigration and descends low spiritually.
तत्र निर्भिन्नगात्राणां चित्रवाजै: शिलीमुखै: ।
विप्लवोऽभूद्दु:खितानां दु:सह: करुणात्मनाम् ॥९॥
तत्र निर्भिन्न-गात्राणाम्
there (in the forest), of the pierced bodied
चित्र-वाजै: शिली-मुखै:
by strange arrows, sharp pointed
विप्लव:-अभूत्-दु:खितानाम्
cry arose, of the saddened
दु:सह: करुण-आत्मनाम्
unbearable by the tender hearted
There, in the forest, seeing the plight of the bodies of the animals piereced by the strange sharp arrows, a cry arose by the saddened, which was unbearable by the tender hearted.
शशान् वराहान् महिषान् गवयान् रुरुशल्यकान् ।
मेध्यानन्यांश्च विविधान् विनिघ्नन् श्रममध्यगात् ॥१०॥
शशान् वराहान् महिषान्
hares, boars, bison,
गवयान् रुरुशल्यकान्
Gayals, black antelopes,
मेध्यान्-अनन्यान्-च विविधान्
porcupines others and various
विनिघ्नन् श्रमम्-अध्यगात्
killing, fatigue felt
As he killed the hares, boars, bisons, Ghayals, black antilopes, porcupines, and various other wild animals, he felt fatigued.
तत: क्षुत्तृट्परिश्रान्तो निवृत्तो गृहमेयिवान् ।
कृतस्नानोचिताहार: संविवेश गतक्लम: ॥११॥
तत: क्षुत्-तृट्-परिश्रान्त:
then by hunger and thirst
निवृत्त: गृहम्-एयिवान्
returned, to house came
कृत-स्नान:-उचित-आहार:
having bathed, proper food
संविवेश गत-क्लम:
lay down, relieved of fatigue
Then, he was exhausted and hungry and thirsty. He returned and coming back home he bathed had proper food and lay down relieved of fatigue.
आत्मानमर्हयाञ्चक्रे धूपालेपस्रगादिभि: ।
साध्वलङ्कृतसर्वाङ्गो महिष्यामादधे मन: ॥१२॥
आत्मानम्-अर्हयाञ्चक्रे
himself bedecked
धूप-आलेप स्रग-आदिभि:
with incense and sandal paste, garlands etc.,
साधु-अलङ्कृत सर्वाङ्ग:
well ornamented, on the body
महिष्याम्-आदधे मन:
in the queen gave mind
He bedecked himself with incence, sandle paste, garlands ete., and adorned himself well on all the limbswith ornaments, and then he thought of the queen.
तृप्तो हृष्ट: सुदृप्तश्च कन्दर्पाकृष्टमानस: ।
न व्यचष्ट वरारोहां गृहिणीं गृहमेधिनीम् ॥१३॥
तृप्त: हृष्ट: सुदृप्त:-च
satisfied, happy, and proud of himself
कन्दर्प-आकृष्ट मानस:
passion seized with the mind
न व्यचष्ट वरारोहाम्
did not see the beautiful
गृहिणीम् गृहमेधिनीम्
wife, the lady of the house
He was well satisfied, happy and proud of himself, and his mind was siezed with passion. He did not see his beautiful wife, the lady of the house.
अन्त:पुरस्त्रियोऽपृच्छद्विमना इव वेदिषत् ।
अपि व: कुशलं रामा: सेश्वरीणां यथा पुरा ॥१४॥
अन्त:पुर-स्त्रिय: अपृच्छत्-
the inner chamber ladies asked
विमना इव वेदिषत्
saddened as if, O Vedishat (Praacheenabarhi)
अपि व: कुशलम् रामा:
also all of you are well, O Charming ladies!
स-ईश्वरीणाम् यथा पुरा
with your mistress, like before
He asked the ladies of the inner chamber "O Charming ladies! Is all well with you all and your mistress, like before?'
न तथैतर्हि रोचन्ते गृहेषु गृहसम्पद: ।
यदि न स्यात् गृहे माता पत्नी वा पतिदेवता ।
व्यङ्गे रथ इव प्राज्ञ: को नामासीत दीनवत् ॥१५॥
न तथा-एतर्हि रोचन्ते
not like that this now look splendid
गृहेषु गृह-सम्पद:
in the house, house articles
यदि न स्यात् गृहे
if not is there, in the house
माता पत्नी वा पतिदेवता
mother, wife or husband the master
व्यङ्गे रथे इव प्राज्ञ:
broken chariot like wise man
क: नाम-आसीत दीनवत्
who indeed, will stay like a miserable person
The articles of the house do not look as splendid as before. In a house where there is no mother or wife to look upon the husband as the lord, in such a house, like in a broken chariot, which wise man will indeed like to stay?
क्व वर्तते सा ललना मज्जन्तं व्यसनार्णवे ।
या मामुद्धरते प्राज्ञां दीपयन्ती ॥१६॥
क्व वर्तते सा ललना
where is she, that beautiful one
मज्जन्तम् व्यसन-अर्णवे
(me) drowning in misery ocean
या माम्-उद्धरते
who me salvages
प्राज्ञाम् दीपयन्ती पदे पदे
intellect brightening, at every step
Where is that beautiful one, who, when I get drowned in the ocean of misery salvages me, brightening my intellect on every step.
रामा ऊचु: -
The ladies said -
नरनाथ न जानीमस्त्वत्प्रिया यद्व्यवस्यति ।
भूतले निरवस्तारे शयानां पश्य शत्रुहन् ॥१७॥
नरनाथ न जानीम:-
O lord of men! do not we know
त्वत्-प्रिया यत्-व्यवस्यति
your beloved what is doing
भूतले निरवस्तारे
on the ground without bed
शयानाम् पश्य शत्रुहन्
sleeping see, O Slayer of the foes!
O Lord of men! We do not know what your beloved intends to do. O Slayer of foes! Look at her sleeping on the ground without a bed.
नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
पुरञ्जन: स्वमहिषीं निरीक्ष्यावधुतां भुवि ।
तत्सङ्गोन्मथितज्ञानो वैक्लव्यं परमं ययौ ॥१८॥
पुरञ्जन: स्व-महिषीम्
Puranjana, own queen
निरीक्ष्य-अवधुताम् भुवि
watching unkempt on the floor (lying)
तत्सङ्ग-उन्मथित-ज्ञान:
by her company, lost judgement
वैक्लव्यम् परमम् ययौ
perturbed very became
Puranjana saw his queen lying unkempt on the floor. He, who had lost his judgement in her company, became very much perturbed.
सान्त्वयन् श्लक्ष्णया वाचा हृदयेन विदूयता ।
प्रेयस्या: स्नेहसंरम्भलिङ्गमात्मनि नाभ्यगात् ॥१९॥
सान्त्वयन् श्लक्ष्णया वाचा
pacifying, by sweet words
हृदयेन विदूयता
with heart aching
प्रेयस्या: स्नेह-संरम्भ-
of his beloved, love prompted
लिङ्गम्-आत्मनि न-अभ्यगात्
sign in self, did not perceive
With an aching heart he tried to pacify his queen with sweet words, but did not percieve in her any signs prompted by love towards him.
अनुनिन्येऽथ शनकैर्वीरोऽनुनयकोविद: ।
पस्पर्श पादयुगलमाह चोत्सङ्गलालिताम् ॥२०॥
अनुनिन्ये-अथ शनकै:-वीर:
pleaded then, slowly the gallant one
अनुनय-कोविद:
in cajoling skilled
पस्पर्श पाद-युगलम्-
touched feet both
आह च-उत्सङ्ग-लालिताम्
said and in lap caressed
Then the gallant youth skilled in cajoling, pleaded with her, touched her two feet and caressed her taking her in his lap, and said…
पुरञ्जन उवाच -
Puranjana said -
नूनं त्वकृतपुण्यास्ते भृत्या येष्वीश्वरा: शुभे ।
कृतागस्स्वात्मसात्कृत्वा शिक्षादण्डं न युञ्जते ॥२१॥
नूनम् तु-अकृत-पुण्या:-
certainly indeed, of mild merit
ते भृत्या:
your servants
येषु-ईश्वरा: शुभे
in whom the masters, O fair one!
कृत-आगस्सु-
having committed offence
आत्मसात्-कृत्वा
in self understanding
शिक्षा-दण्डम् न युञ्जते
corrective punishment do not apply
Certaily indeed, those servants are of mild merit, O fair one! Who having commited an offence have not been given corrective punishment by the masters, who regard them as their own selves.
परमोऽनुग्रहो दण्डो भृत्येषु प्रभुणार्पित: ।
बालो न वेद तत्तन्वि बन्धुकृत्यममर्षण: ॥२२॥
परम:-अनुग्रह: दण्ड:
great obligation punishment
भृत्येषु प्रभुणा-अर्पित:
on servants, by masters applied
बाल: न वेद तत्-
foolish does not understand that
तन्वि
O lovely one!
बन्धु-कृत्यम्-अमर्षण:
friendly gesture, because of resentment
O lovely one! Punishment meted out to the servants by the masters, is a great obligation towards them, and a friendly gesture which they foolishly do not understand because of resentment.
सा त्वं मुखं सुदति सुभ्रवनुरागभारव्रीडाविलम्बविलसद् हसितावलोकम् ।
नीलालकालिभिरुपस्कृतमुन्नसं न: स्वानां प्रदर्शय मनस्विनि वल्गुवाक्यम् ॥२३॥
सा त्वम् मुखम् सुदति सुभ्रु-
that you (your) face with beautiful teeth, eyebrows
अनुराग-भार-व्रीडा-विलम्ब-
love's weight and coyness hanging,
विलसत् हसित-अवलोकम्
charming smiling glances
नील-अलक-अलिभि:-उपस्कृतम्-
dark tresses bees like, surrounded
उन्नसम् न: स्वानाम् प्रदर्शय
with a shapely nose, to us your own show
मनस्विनि वल्गु-वाक्यम्
O proud lady! with sweet words
O proud lady! Get up and show to us, your own people, your charming face with beautiful teeth and eyebrows, with a shapely nose, hanging with the weight of love and shyness, surrounded by bees like dark tresses, and which speeks sweet words.
तस्मिन्दधे दममहं तव वीरपत्नि योऽन्यत्र भूसुरकुलात्कृतकिल्बिषस्तम् ।
पश्ये न वीतभयमुन्मुदितं त्रिलोक्यामन्यत्र वै मुररिपोरितरत्र दासात् ॥२४॥
तस्मिन्-दधे दमम्-अहम्
to him will inflict punishment I
तव वीरपत्नि
your O Spouse of a warrior!
य:-अन्यत्र भूसुरकुलात्-
who, besides, (being) of Braahmana race
कृत-किल्बिष:-तम्
has done wrong, him
पश्ये न वीत-भयम्-
see not devoid of fear
उन्मुदितम् त्रिलोक्याम्-
or happy in the three worlds
अन्यत्र वै मुररिपो:-
other than of course Vishnu's
इतर्-अत्र दासात्
besides, servant
O Spouse of a worrior! I will inflict punishment on him unless he is of the Braahmana race, who has wronged you. I do not see him fearless or happy in the three worlds, other than, of course if he is the servant of Lord Vishnu.
वक्त्रं न ते वितिलकं मलिनं विहर्ष संरम्भभीममविमृष्टमपेतरागम् ।
पश्ये स्तनवपि शुचोपहतौ सुजातौ बिम्बाधरं विगतकुङ्कुमपङ्गरागम् ॥२५॥
वक्त्रम् न ते वितिलकम्
face not yours, without the Tilaka,
मलिनम् विहर्ष संरम्भ-
dull, unhappy, angry
भीमम्-अविमृष्टम्-अपेत-रागम्
very cheerless, without love
पश्ये स्तनौ-अपि शुचा-उपहतौ
did see breasts also, with grief soiled (with tears)
सुजातौ बिम्ब-अधरम्
good shaped like Bimba fruit lips
विगत-कुङ्कुम्-अपङ्ग-रागम्
devoid of saffron, wetted hue
Never before did I see your face without Tilaka, dull and unhappy, angry and very cheerless, and without love. Your breasts also are soiled by the tears of grief and your lips shaped like the Bimba fruit, are lustreless without the hue of moist saffron.
तन्मे प्रसीद सुहृद: कृतकिल्बिषस्य स्वैरं गतस्य मृगयां व्यसनातुरस्य ।
का देवरं वशगतं कुसुमास्त्रवेगविस्रस्तपौस्नमुशती न भजेत कृत्ये ॥२६॥
तत्-मे प्रसीद सुहृद:
therefore, to me be gracious, your lover
कृत-किल्बिषस्य स्वैरम्
having committed offence, independently
गतस्य मृगयाम् व्यसन-आतुरस्य
having gone for hunting, by passion overcome
का देवरम् वशगतम्
which woman a husband under her spell
कुसुम-अस्त्र-वेग-विस्रस्त-पौस्नम्-
by flower armed (cupid's) sway, deprived of patience
उशती न भजेत कृत्ये
amorous one will not accept befitting service
Therefore, be gracious to me, your lover. I had gone hunting on my own, overcome by the passion of the sport. Which amorous woman will not accept befitting service from her husband who is under her spell and is deprived of patience, by the sway of the flower armed cupid?
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंससंहितायां चतुर्थ स्कन्धे पुरञ्जनोपाख्याने षड् विंश: अध्याय: ॥२६॥
Thus ends the twenty-sixth discourse forming part of the story of Puranjana, in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
