नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
इत्थं पुरञ्जनं सघ्र्यग्वशमानीय विभ्रमै: ।

पुरञ्जनी महाराज रेमे रमयती पतिम् ॥१॥


इत्थम् पुरञ्जनम् सघ्र्यक्-
in this manner, Puranjana completely
वशम्-आनीय विभ्रमै:
under sway bringing by feminine graces
पुरञ्जनी महाराज
Puranjanee, O Great King!
रेमे रमयती पतिम्
enjoyed delighting (her) husband

O Great King! In this manner Puranjanee completely brought Puranjana, her husband under her sway by her feminine graces, and enjoyed by delighting him.


स राजा महिषीं राजन् सुस्नातां रुचिराननाम् ।

कृतस्वस्त्ययनां तृप्तामभ्यनन्ददुपागताम् ॥२॥


स: राजा महिषीम् राजन्
that king (his) wife, O King!
सुस्नाताम् रुचिर-आननाम्
well bathed, beautiful faced
कृत-स्वस्ति-अयनाम्
having auspicious decorations (adorned with)
तृप्ताम्-अभ्यनन्दत्-उपागताम्
gratified greeted, having come

O King! That king greeted his wife when she came to him with a beautiful face, well bathed, and having adorned herself with auspicious decorations, and well gratified.


तयोपगूढ: परिरब्धकन्धरो रहोऽनुमन्त्रैरपकृष्टचेतन: ।

न कालरंहो बुबुधे दुरत्ययं दिवा निशेति प्रमदापरिग्रह: ॥3॥


तया-उपगूढ: परिरब्ध-कन्धर:
by her embraced, (his) arms around (her) neck
रह:-अनुमन्त्रै:-
in secret with amorous talks
अपकृष्ट-चेतन:
having lost discrimination
न काल-रंह: बुबुधे
did not times passing understand,
दुरत्ययम् दिवा निशा-इति
difficult to master, day night or thus
प्रमदा-परिग्रह:
by infatuation possessed

As she embraced him, he put his arms around her neck, and by amorous talks in secret, he lost his sense of discrimination. He did not kinow the paassing of time which is difficult to master. Possessed by infatuation he did not know day or night.


शयान उन्नद्धमदो महामना महार्हतल्पे महिषीभुजोपधि: ।

तामेव वीरो मनुते परं यतस्तमोऽभिभूतो न निजं परं च यत् ॥४॥


शयान: उन्नद्ध-मद:
sleeping, with raised ego
महामना महा-अर्ह-तल्पे
the ambitious (Puranjana) on very splendid bed
महिषी-भुजा-उपधि:
queen's arm as pillow
ताम्-एव वीर: मनुते परम्
her only, the valiant one considered supreme
यत:-तम:-अभिभूत:
because of infatuation overpowered
न निजम् परम् च यत्
not own, alien and which

The ambitious Puranjana, whose ego was inflated, kept sleeping on a splendid bed with his queens arm as pillow. The valiant one, overpowered by infatuation considered only her as supreme, and did not know what was his own and what was alien.


तयैवं रममाणस्य कामकश्मलचेतस: ।

क्षणार्धमिव राजेन्द्र व्यतिक्रान्तं नवं वय: ॥५॥


तया-एवम् रममाणस्य
with her thus, sensuously delighting
काम-कश्मल-चेतस:
by passion clouded mind
क्षण-अर्धम्-इव राजेन्द्र
moment half like, O King of kings!
व्यतिक्रान्तम् नवम् वय:
was spent young age

O King of kings! As he sensuously delighted in her, with his mind clouded by passion, his young age passed as if in half a minute.


तस्यामजनयत्पुत्रान् पुरञ्जन्यां पुरञ्जन: ।

शतान्येकादश विराडायुषोऽर्धमथात्यगात् ॥६॥


तस्याम्-अजनयत्-पुत्रान्
from her gave birth to sons
पुरञ्जन्याम् पुरञ्जन:
from Puranjanee, Puranjana
शतानि-एकादश विराड्-आयुष:-
hundred eleven, long age
अर्धम्-अथ-अत्यगात्
half then passed away

Through her, Puranjanee, Puranjana begot eleven hundred sons. By that time half of his long age had passed.


दुहितृर्दशोत्तरशतं पितृमातृयशस्करी ।

शीलौदार्यगुणोपेता: पौरञ्जन्य: प्रजापते ॥७॥


दुहितृ:-दश-उत्तर-शतम्
daughters, ten more than hundred
पितृ-मातृ-यश:-करी
father mother fame increasing
शील-औदार्य गुण-उपेता:
noble and generous virtues endowed with
पौरञ्जन्य: प्रजापते
of Puranjana the king

To the king Puranjana were born one hundred and ten daughters, who increased their parents' fame. They were endowed with virtues like noble character and generous nature.


स पञ्चालपति: पुत्रान् पितृवंशविवर्धनान् ।

दारै: संयोजयामास दुहितृ: सदृशैर्वरै: ॥८॥


स: पञ्चालपति: पुत्रान्
he, the king of Paanchaala, sons,
पितृ-वंश-विवर्धनान्
for father's clan increasing
दारै: संयोजयामास
with brides married
दुहितृ: सदृशै:-वरै:
daughter with appropriate bridegrooms

The king of Paanchaala, in order to increase his father's clan, married his sons to brides, and the daughters to appropriate bridegrooms.


पुत्राणां चाभवन् पुत्रा एकैकस्य शतं शतम् ।

यैर्वै पौरजनो वंश: पञ्चालेषु समेधित: ॥९॥


पुत्राणाम् च-अभवन् पुत्रा:
to the sons, and were born sons
एक-एकस्य शतम् शतम्
to each one hundred hundred
यै:-वै पौरजन: वंश:
by whom indeed Puranjana's clan
पञ्चालेषु समेधित:
in Paanchaala grew very much

A hundred sons were born to each of those sons. By them, the race of Puranjana considerably grew in Paanchaala.


तेषु तद्रिक्थहारेषु गृहकोशानुजीविषु ।

निरूढेन ममत्वेन विषयेष्वन्वबध्यत ॥१०॥


तेषु तत्-रिक्थहारेषु
in them and in those heirs
गृह-कोश-अनुजीविषु
in house, treasury and attendents
निरूढेन ममत्वेन
by increased possessiveness
विषयेषु-अन्वबध्यत
in sense objects were attached

By the increased feeling of possessiveness in the sons and the grandsons, and in the house, treasury and the attendents, he got more and more attached to sense objects.


ईजे च क्रतुभिर्घोरैर्दीक्षित: पशुमारकै: ।

देवान् पितृन् भूतपतीन्नानाकामो यथा भवान् ॥११॥


ईजे च क्रतुभि:-घोरै:-
worshipped and by sacrifices, horrible,
दीक्षित: पशु-मारकै:
consecrated in animal slaughter
देवान् पितृन् भूतपतीन्-
the gods manes, and lords of ghosts
नाना-काम: यथा भवान्
manifold desires (prompted), like yourself

Just like you, prompted by manifold desires, he was consecrated into performing horrible sacrifices, and by those sacrifices which involved animal slaughter, he worshipped the gods, manes and the lords of ghosts.


युक्त्तेष्वेवं प्रमत्तस्य कुटुम्बासक्तचेतस: ।

आससाद स वै कालो योऽप्रिय प्रिययोषिताम् ॥१२॥


युक्त्तेषु-एवम् प्रमत्तस्य
involved thus, unmindful
कुटुम्बासक्त-चेतस:
in family attached mind
आससाद स: वै काल:
came that indeed time
य:-अप्रिय प्रिय-योषिताम्
which is unwelcome, to those fond of women

Thus, unmindful of his welfare, his mind was involved and attached to the family, until, indeed, the time came which is unwelcome to those fond of women.


चण्डवेग इति ख्यातो गन्धर्वाधिपतिर्नृप ।

गन्धर्वास्तस्य बलिन: षष्ट्युत्तरशतत्रयम् ॥१३॥


चण्डवेग इति ख्यात:
Chandavega, thus known
गन्धर्व-अधिपति:-नृप
the Gandharva chief, O King!
गन्धर्वा:-तस्य बलिन:
Gandharvas his strong
षष्ट्युत्तर-शतत्रयम्
three hundred and sixty

O King! the chief of the Gandharvas, known as Chandavega, had three hundred and sixty strong Gandharvas,…


गन्धर्व्यस्तादृशीरस्य मैथुन्यश्च सितासिता: ।

परिवृत्त्या विलुम्पन्ति सर्वकामविनिर्मिताम् ॥१४॥


गन्धर्व्य:-तादृशी:-अस्य
Gandharvees, likewise his
मैथुन्य:-च सित-असिता:
a couple and fair and dark
परिवृत्त्या विलुम्पन्ति
in turns plunder (the city)
सर्व-काम-विनिर्मिताम्
all desire providing in built

Likewise, his Gandharvees, in couples of fair and dark, in turn plundered the city which had inbuilt provision to provide for all desires.


ते चण्डवेगानुचरा: पुरञ्जनपुरं यदा ।

हर्तुमारेभिरे तत्र प्रत्यषेधत्प्रजागर: ॥१५॥


ते चण्डवेग-अनुचरा:
they, Chandavega's attendents
पुरञ्जन-पुरम् यदा
Puranjan's capital when
हर्तुम्-आरेभिरेतत्र
to plunder started, there,
प्रत्यषेधत्-प्रजागर:
defended, Prajaagara, (the serpent)

When, they, the attendents of Chandavega started to plunder the capital of Puranjana, the serpant Prajaagara defended it.


स सप्तभि: शतैरेको विंशत्या च शतं समा: ।

पुरञ्जनपुराध्यक्षो गन्धर्वैर्युयुधे बली ॥१६॥


स: सप्तभि: शतै:-एक:
he, seven hundred, alone
विंशत्या च शतम् समा:
twenty and for hundred years
पुरञ्जन-पुर-अध्यक्ष:
the Puranjana capital's guard
गन्धर्वै:- युयुधे बली
with the Gandharvas fought, the powerful

The powerful guard of the capital of Puranjana, faught all alone for a hundred years with the seven hundred and twenty Gandharvas.


क्षीयमाणो स्वसम्बन्धे एकस्मिन् बहुभिर्युधा ।

चिन्तां परां जगामार्त: सराष्ट्रपुरबान्धवा: ॥१७॥


क्षीयमाण स्व-सम्बन्धे
deteriorating (in strength) in own relations
एकस्मिन् बहुभि:-युधा
single, with many fighting
चिन्ताम् पराम् जगाम-आर्त:
worried intensely went to distressed
सराष्ट्र-पुर-बान्धवा:
with the dominion city and kinsmen

Because of fighting single handedly with so many the strength of his own relatives began to deteriorate. Seeing this, Puranjana was extremely worried, and distressed along with the dominion, the city and the kinsmen.


स एव पुर्यां मधुभुक्पञ्चालेषु स्वपार्षदै: ।

उपनीतं बलिं गृह्णन् स्त्रीजितो नाविदद्भयम् ॥१८॥


स: एव पुर्याम् मधु-भुक्-
he alone in the city, wine drinker
पञ्चालेषु स्व-पार्षदै:
in Paanchaala, by his own attendents
उपनीतम् बलिम् गृह्णन्
gathered taxes taking,
स्त्री-जित: न-अविदद्-भयम्
hen-pecked, did not know the fear

He was the only wine drinker in Panchaala. He took the taxes gathered by his own attendents, and did not know anything of the impending fear.


कालस्य दुहिता काचित्त्रिलोकीं वरमिच्छती ।

पर्यटन्ती न बर्हिष्मन् प्रत्यनन्दत कश्चन ॥१९॥


कालस्य दुहिता काचित्-
Time's daughter, some,
त्रिलोकीम् वरम्-इच्छती
the three worlds, husband looking for
पर्यटन्ती न बर्हिष्मन्
roamed over did not, O Barhishman!
प्रत्यनन्दत कश्चन
welcome any one

O Barhishman! Some daughter of Time, roamed the three worlds desiring a husband, but no one welcomed her.


दौर्भाग्येनात्मनो लोके विश्रुता दुर्भगेति सा ।

या तुष्टा राजर्षये तु वृतादात्पूरवे वरम् ॥२०॥


दौर्भाग्येन-आत्मन: लोके
by unfortunateness her own, in the world
विश्रुता दुर्भगा-इति सा
was known, Durbhagaa thus she
या तुष्टा राजर्षये तु
who pleased, to the king indeed
वृता-अदात्-पुरवे वरम्
wedded gave to Puru a boon

By her own unfortunate-ness, she was known as Durbhagaa. Once wedded to Puru, and pleased with him, she gave the king a boon.


कदाचिदटमाना सा ब्रह्मलोकान्महीं गतम् ।

वव्रे बृहद्व्रतं मां तु जानती काममोहिता ॥२१॥


कदाचित्-अटमाना सा
once wandering she
ब्रह्म-लोकात्-महीम् गतम्
from Brahma Loka, to the earth (having) come
वव्रे बृहद्व्रतम् माम्
wooed (me), perpetually vowed me
तु जानती काम-मोहिता
indeed knowing, passion infatuated

Once, when I had just descended on the earth from Brahma Loka, she, who was infatuated by passion and was wandering about, wooed me, though she well knew of my perpetual vow to celebacy.


मयि संरभ्य विपुलमदाच्छापं सुदु:सहम् ।

स्थातुमर्हसि नैकत्र मद्याच्ञाविमुखो मुने ॥२२॥


मयि संरभ्य विपुलम्-अदात्-
at me enraged, formidable gave
शापम् सुदु:सहम्
curse intolerable
स्थातुम्-अर्हसि न-एकत्र
to stay will be able not at one place
मत्-याच्ञा विमुख: मुने
my advances refusing O Sage!

Enraged at me, she pronounced a formidable intolerable curse on me saying, 'Having denied my advances, O Sage! you will not be able to stay at one place.'


ततो विहतसङ्कल्पा कन्यका यवनेश्वरम् ।

मयोपदिष्टमासाद्य वव्रे नाम्ना भयं पतिम् ॥२३॥


तत: विहत-सङ्कल्पा
then, failed in decision
कन्यका यवन-ईश्वरम्
the maid, the Yavana's lord
मया-उपदिष्टम्-आसाद्य
by me directed approached
वव्रे नाम्ना भयम् पतिम्
and accepted, named Bhaya (Fear) as husband

The maid thus thwarted in her decision, then, on my advice, approached the lord of the Yavanas, Bhaya, (Fear) by name and accepted him as her husband.


ऋषभं यवनानां त्वां वृणे वीरेप्सितं पतिम् ।

सङ्कल्पस्त्वयि भूतानां कृत: किल न रिष्यति ॥२४॥


ऋषभम् यवनानाम् त्वाम्
the foremost of the Yavanas, you
वृणे वीर-ईप्सितम् पतिम्
(I) court, O Brave One! as the desired husband
सङ्कल्प:-त्वयि भूतानाम्
making up the mind in you, by the beings
कृत: किल न रिष्यति
having made, indeed does not go in vain

'O Brave One! The foremost of the Yavanas, I court you as my desired husband. When beings, make up there mind to be placed in you, it indeed does not go in vain.


द्वाविमावनुशोचन्ति बालावसदवग्रहौ ।

यल्लोकशास्त्रोपनतं न राति न तदिच्छति ॥२५॥


द्वौ-इमौ-अनुशोचन्ति
both these are to be pitied
बालौ-असत्-अवग्रहौ
ignorant, foolishly stubborn
यत्-लोक-शास्त्र-उपनतम्
that the world and scriptures having allowed
न राति न तत्-इच्छति
does not give, does not that accept

The people, who do not give or do not accept that which is allowed by the world and the scriptures, both, are to be pitied, for their ignorance and foolish stubborn-ness.


अथो भजस्व मां भद्र भजन्तीं मे दयां कुरु ।

एतावान् पौरुषो धर्मो यदार्ताननुकम्पते ॥२६॥


अथ: भजस्व माम् भद्र
therefore accept me, O Gentleman!
भजन्तीम् मे दयाम् कुरु
imploring me, gracious be
एतावान् पौरुष: धर्म:
this much a man's sacred duty is
यत्-आर्तान्-अनुकम्पते
that to the afflicted to be compassionate

O Gentleman! Therefore accept me, who is imploring you. Do be gracious. This is a sacred duty of a man to be compassionate to the one afflicted.


कालकन्योदितवचो निशम्य यवनेश्वर: ।

चिकीर्षुर्देवगुह्यं स सस्मितं तामभाषत ॥२७॥


काल-कन्या-उदित-वच:
Kaala's daughter's spoken, words
निशम्य यवनेश्वर:
hearing, the lord of the Yavanas
चिकीर्षु:-देव-गुह्यम्
to accomplish the god's secret (mission)
स: सस्मितम् ताम्-अभाषत
he smilingly, to her said

On hearing the words of the daughter of Kaala, the lord of the Yavanas, who was to accomplish the secret mission of the gods, smilingly said to her,….


मया निरूपितस्तुभ्यं पतिरात्मसमाधिना ।

नाभिनन्दति लोकोऽयं त्वामभद्रामसम्मताम् ॥२८॥


मया निरूपित:-तुभ्यम्
by me is selected for you
पति:-आत्म-समाधिना
a husband by my intuitive vision
न-अभिनन्दति लोक:-अयम्
does not welcome world this
त्वाम्-अभद्राम्-असम्मताम्
you the inauspicious and despised

I have selected a husband for you, by my intutive vision. This world does not welcome you, because you are inauspicious and are despised.


त्वमव्यक्तगतिर्भुङ्क्ष्वलोकं कर्मविनिर्मितम् ।

याहि मे पृतनायुक्ता प्रजानाशं प्रणेष्यसि ॥२९॥


त्वम्-अव्यक्त-गति:-भुङ्क्ष्व-
you, of undisclosed movements, enjoy
लोकम् कर्म-विनिर्मितम्
the world by Karma based existence
याहि मे पृतना-युक्ता
go my army keep with
प्रजा-नाशम् प्रणेष्यसि
destruction of the beings will bring about

Your movements are undisclosed. The existence of the world is based on its Karma, enjoy the whole creation at pleasure. Keep with my army and you will bring about the destruction of the beings.


प्रज्वारोऽयं मम भ्राता त्वं च मे भगिनी भव ।

चराम्युभाभ्यां लोकेऽस्मिन्नव्यक्तो भीमसैनिक: ॥३०॥


प्रज्वार:-अयम् मम भ्राता
Prajwaara this, my brother
त्वम् च मे भगिनी भव
you and my sister become
चरामि-उभाभ्याम् लोके-अस्मिन्-
will roam with both, on the world this,
अव्यक्त: भीम-सैनिक:
unperceived, (with) formidable army

This, Prajwaara, is my brother, and you become my sister. I will roam along with you both, and my formidable army, on this world, unpercieved.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे पुरञ्जनोपाख्याने सप्तविंशोऽध्याय: ॥२७॥


Thus ends the twenty-seventh discourse forming part of the parable of Puranjana, in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
