श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
निमिरिक्ष्वाकुतनयो वशिष्ठमवृतर्त्विजम् ।
आरम्भ सत्रं सोऽप्याह शक्रेण प्राग्वृतोऽस्मि भो: ॥१॥
निमि:-इक्ष्वाकु-तनय:
Nimi, Ikshvaaku's son
वशिष्ठम्-अवृत-ऋत्विजम्
Vasishtha engaged as presiding priest
आरम्भ सत्रम् स:-अपि-आह
before the sacrifice, he also said
शक्रेण प्राक्-वृत:-अस्मि भो:
'by Indra before am engaged, O Dear,'
Ikshvaaku's son Nimi, at the beginning of the sacrifice, invited sage Vasishtha to be the presiding priest. He also said, 'O King! I have already been invited by Indra.'
तं निर्वर्त्यागमिष्यामि तावन्मां प्रतिपालय ।
तूष्णीमासीद् गृहपति: सोऽपीन्द्रस्याकरोन्मखम् ॥२॥
तम् निर्वर्त्य-आगमिष्यामि
that completing, will come,
तावत्-माम् प्रतिपालय
till then, me wait for
तूष्णीम्-आसीद् गृहपति:
quiet became the householder
स:-अपि-इन्द्रस्य-अकरोत्-मखम्
he also Indra's performed the sacrifice
'I will complete that and then come. Till then wait for me.' The house holder kept quiet and he also went away to conduct Indra's sacrifice.
निमिश्चलमिदं विद्वान् सत्रमारभतात्मवान् ।
ऋत्विग्भिरपरैस्तावन्नागमद् यावता गुरु: ॥३॥
निमि:-चलम्-इदम् विद्वान्
Nimi, moving this, the wise
सत्रम्-आरभत-आत्मवान्
the sacrifice started the Self-knower
ऋत्विग्भि:-अपरै: तावत्-
by the presiding priests others, until
न-आगमत्-यावता गुरु:
did not come till then the preceptor
The Self-knower wise Nimi, knowing that everything in this world is moving, started the sacrifice by other presiding priest until the preceptor did not come, till then.
शिष्यव्यतिक्रमं वीक्ष्य निर्वर्त्य गुरुरागत: ।
अशपत् पतताद् देहो निमे: पण्डितमानिन: ॥४॥
शिष्य-व्यतिक्रमम् वीक्ष्य
of the disciple's disobedience seeing
निर्वर्त्य गुरु:-आगत:
after returning the preceptor having come,
अशपत् देहो पतताद्
cursed, the body may fall
निमे: पण्डित-मानिन:
of Nimi learned regarding
Having come, after returning, the preceptor saw the disobedience of the disciple, and cursed him, 'Let Nimi's body fall, who considers himself very learned.'
निमि: प्रतिददौ शापं गुरवेऽधर्मवर्तिने ।
तवापि पतताद् देहो लोभात् धर्ममजानत: ॥५॥
निमि: प्रतिददौ शापम्
Nimi counter cursed
गुरवे-अधर्म-वर्तिने
the preceptor unrighteousness following
तव-अपि पततात् देह:
'Your also may fall body,
लोभात् धर्मम्-अजानत:
by greed righteousness not knowing
Nimi counter cursed his preceptor, who had acted unrighteously, 'May your body also fall, as you did not know righteousness because of greed.'
इत्युससर्ज स्वं देहं निमिरध्यात्मकोविद: ।
मित्रावरुणयोर्जज्ञे उर्वश्यां प्रपितामह: ॥६॥
इति-उत्ससर्ज स्वम् देहम्
thus, gave up own body
निमि:-अध्यात्म-कोविद:
Nimi, in spiritual knowledge adept
मित्रावरुणयो:-जज्ञे
Mitraavaruna was born
उर्वश्याम् प्रपितामह:
through Urvashi (the sage) my ancestor
Nimi, adept in spiritual knowledge, gave up his body. And the sage Vasishtha who was my ancestor was born of Mitraavaruna through Urvashi.
गन्धवस्तुषु तद्देहं निधाय मुनिसत्तमा: ।
समाप्ते सत्रयोगेऽथ देवानूचु: समागतान् ॥७॥
गन्ध-वस्तुषु तत्-देहम्
in perfumed balms his body
निधाय मुनि-सत्तमा:
placing, the sages foremost,
समाप्ते सत्रयोगे-अथ
on conclusion of the session of sacrifice, then,
देवान्-ऊचु: समागतान्
to the gods said, assembled
The foremost sages placed the body of Nimi in perfumed balms, on the conclusion of the sacrifice session, said to the gods assembled there.
राज्ञो जीवतु देहोऽयं प्रसन्ना: प्रभवो यदि ।
तथेत्युक्ते निमि: प्राह मा भून्मे देहबन्धनम् ॥८॥
राज्ञ: जीवतु देह:-अयम्
of the king, may live body this,
प्रसन्ना: प्रभव: यदि
pleased you all are, if,
तथा-इति-उक्ते निमि: प्राह
Amen' thus spoken, Nimi called,
मा भूत्-मे देह-बन्धनम्
may not my be body bondage
'If it pleases you all, may this body of the king.' As the sages said 'Amen', Nimi called from the body, 'May there not be bondage of the body to me.'
यस्य योगं न वाञ्छन्ति वियोगभयकातरा: ।
भजन्ति चरणाम्भोजं मुनयो हरिमेधस: ॥९॥
यस्य योगम् न वाञ्छन्ति
whose attachment do not desire
वियोग-भय-कातरा:
by separation fear afraid of
भजन्ति चरण-अम्भोजम्
worship the feet lotuses
मुनय: हरि-मेधस:
the sages with Lord Shree Hari in mind
The sages who are apprehensive of the fear of separation from the Lord, worship Lord Shree Hari's lotus feet and do not desire attachment to the body.
देहं नावरुरुत्सेऽहं दु:खशोकभयावहम् ।
सर्वत्रास्य यतो मृत्युर्मत्स्यानामुदके यथा ॥१०॥
देहम् न-अवरुरुत्से-अहम्
body do not want to take on I
दु:ख-शोक-भय-आवहम्
sorrow grief fear bringing
सर्वत्र-अस्य यत: मृत्यु:-
everywhere of it is because death
मत्स्यानाम्-उदके यथा
of the fish in water like
I am not interested in taking on a body, which brings with itself sorrow and grief and fear, and because every where there is death for it, like of the fish in water.
देवा ऊचु: -
The gods said -
विदेह उष्यतां कामं लोचनेषु शरीरिणाम् ।
उन्मेषणनिमेषाभ्यां लक्षितोऽध्यात्मसंस्थित: ॥११॥
विदेह उष्यताम् कामम्
without body stay at will
लोचनेषु शरीरिणाम्
in the eyes of the embodied beings
उन्मेषण-निमेषाभ्याम्
by opening and closing (which)
लक्षित:-अध्यात्म-संस्थित:
indicated own presence
' Bereft of a body, may you live at will, in the eyes of the embodied beings. By the closing and opening of which your presence will be indicated.'
अराजकभयं नृणां मन्यमाना महर्षय: ।
देहं ममन्थु: स्म निमे: कुमार: समजायत ॥१२॥
अराजक-भयम् नृणाम्
anarchy afraid of among the people
मन्यमाना: महर्षय:
considering, the great sages
देहम् ममन्थु: स्म निमे:
the body churned of Nimi
कुमार: समजायत
a son was born
The great sages apprehensive and afraid of anarchy amongst the people, churned the body of Nimi whence a son was born.
जन्मना जनक: सोऽभूत् वैदेहस्तु विदेहज: ।
मिथिलो मथनाज्जातो मिथिला येन निर्मिता ॥१३॥
जन्मना जनक: स:-अभूत्
by birth he was Janaka, he became
वैदेह:-तु विदेहज:
Videha, indeed of body-less born
मिथिल: मथनात्-जात:
Mithila by churning born
मिथिला येन निर्मिता
Mithilaa by whom was built
Because of being born, he was called Janaka, being born of body-less, be became Vaideha, and being born by churning, he was Mithila, by whom the city of Mithilaa was built.
तस्मादुदावसुस्तस्य पुत्रोऽभून्नन्दिवर्धन: ।
तत: सुकेतुस्तस्यापि देवरातो महीपते ॥१४॥
तस्मात्-उदावसु:-तस्य
from him Udaavasu, his
पुत्रो:-अभूत्-नन्दिवर्धन:
son became Nandivardhana
तत: सुकेतु:-तस्य-अपि
from him Suketu, his also
देवरात: महीपते
Devaraata, O Ruler of the earth!
O Ruler of the earth! from him Udaavasu was born, his son was Nandivardhana, from him Suketu was born and his son was Devaraata.
तस्माद् बृहद्रथस्तस्य महावीर्य: सुधृत्पिता ।
सुधृतेर्धृष्टकेतुर्वै हर्यश्वोऽथ मरुस्तत: ॥१५॥
तस्मात् बृहद्रथ:-तस्य
from him Brihadratha, his (son was)
महावीर्य: सुधृत्-पिता
Mahaaveerya, Sudhrit's father
सुधृते:-धृष्टकेतु:-वै
of Sudhrit Dhrishtaketu certainly
हर्यश्व:-अथ मरु:-तत:
Haryashva then, Maru from him
From Devaraata Brihadratha was born, his son was Mahaaveerya, who was Sudhrit's father. From Sudhrit certainly Dhrishtaketu was born, from him Haryashva, and from him Maru was born.
मरो: प्रतीपकस्तस्माज्जात: कृतिरथो यत: ।
देवमीढस्तस्य सुतो विश्रुतोऽथ महाधृति: ॥१६॥
मरो: प्रतीपक:-तस्मात्-
Maru's was Prateepaka, from him
जात: कृतिरथ: यत:
was born Kritiratha, from whom
देवमीढ:-तस्य सुत:
Devameedha, his son
विश्रुत:-अथ महाधृति:
Vishruta, then Mahaadhriti
Maru's son was Prateepaka from him Kritiratha was born from whom Devameedha was born, his son was Vishruta, then, from him Mahaadhriti was born.
कृतिरातस्ततस्तस्मान्महारोमाथ तत्सुत: ।
स्वर्णरोमा सुतस्तस्य ह्रस्वरोमा व्यजायत ॥१७॥
कृतिरात:-तत:-तस्मात्-
Kritiraata then, from him
महारोमा-अथ तत्-सुत:
Mahaaromaa then his son
स्वर्णरोमा सुत:-तस्य
Svarnaroma, the son, his
ह्रस्वरोमा व्यजायत
Hrasvaromaa was born
Kritiraata from him was born, and from him Mahaaromaa, then his son was Svarnaroma, and his son Hrasvaromaa was born.
तत: सीरध्वजो जज्ञे यज्ञार्थ कर्षतो महीम् ।
सीता सीराग्रतो जाता तस्मात् सीरध्वज: स्मृत: ॥१८॥
तत: सीरध्वज: जज्ञे
from him Seeradhvaja was born
यज्ञ-अर्थ कर्षत: महीम्
for sacrifice purpose tilling the land
सीता सीर-अग्रत: जाता
Sita from the plough's end was born
तस्मात् सीरध्वज: स्मृत:
therefore Seeradhvaja is called
From him Seeradhvaja was born, who was tilling the land for the purpose of sacrifice, when Sita was born from the front end of the plough, therefore he is called Seeradhvaja.
कुशध्वजस्तस्य पुत्रस्ततो धर्मध्वजो नृप: ।
धर्मध्वजस्य द्वौ पुत्रौ कृतध्वजमितध्वजौ ॥१९॥
कुशध्वज:-तस्य पुत्र:-
Kritadhvaja his son
तत: धर्मध्वज: नृप:
from him Dharmadhvaja, O King!
धर्मध्वजस्य द्वौ पुत्रौ
of Dharmadhvaja, two sons
कृतध्वज-मितध्वजौ
Kritadhvaja and Mitadhvaja
Kritadhvaja was his son, from him Dharmadhvaja was born. O King! Dharmadhvaja had two sons, Kritadhvaja and Mitadhvaja.
कृतध्वजात् केशिध्वज: खाण्डिक्यस्तु मितध्वजात् ।
कृतध्वजसुतो राजन्नात्मविद्याविशारद: ॥२०॥
कृतध्वजात् केशिध्वज:
from Kritadhvaja Keshidhvaja was born
खाण्डिक्य:-तु मितध्वजात्
Khaandikya indeed from Mitadhvaja
कृतध्वज-सुत: राजन्-
Kritadhvaja's son, O King!
आत्म-विद्या-विशारद:
in Self-knowledge was well versed
From Kritadhvaja was born Keshidhvaja, from Mitadhvaja Khaandikya indeed was born. O King! Kritadhvaja's son was well versed in knowledge of the Self.
खाण्डिक्य: कर्मतत्त्वज्ञो भीत: केशिध्वजाद् द्रुत: ।
भानुमांस्तस्य पुत्रोऽभूच्छतद्युम्नस्तु तत्सुत: ॥२१॥
खाण्डिक्य: कर्म-तत्त्वज्ञ:
Khaandikya in rituals science had knowledge
भीत: केशिध्वजात् द्रुत:
in fear of Keshidhvaja he fled
भानुमान्-तस्य पुत्र:-अभूत्
Bhaanumaan his son became
शतद्युम्न:-तु तत्-सुत:
Shatadyumna indeed his son
Khaandikya had knowledge in the science of rituals, he being afraid of Keshidhvaja fled away. His son was Bhaanumaan and his son indeed was Shatadyumna.
शुचिस्तत्तनयस्तस्मात् सनद्वाजस्ततोऽभवत् ।
ऊर्ध्वकेतु: सनद्वाजादजोऽथ पुरुजित्सुत: ॥२२॥
शुचि:-तत्-तनय:-तस्मात्
Shuchi was his son, from him
सनद्वाज:-तत:-अभवत्
Sanadvaaja, then was born
ऊर्ध्वकेतु: सनद्वाजात्-
Oordhvaketu from Sandvaaja
अज:-अथ पुरुजित्-सुत:
Aja then, Purujit was the son
Shuchi was his son, from him Sanadvaaja, from Sanadvaaja Oordhvaketu was born, then his son was Aja, and his son was Purujit.
अरिष्टनेमिस्तस्यापि श्रुतायुस्तत्सुपार्श्वक: ।
ततश्चित्ररथो यस्य क्षेमधिर्मिथिलाधिप: ॥२३॥
अरिष्टनेमि:-तस्य-अपि
Arishtanemee, his also
श्रुतायु:-तत्-सुपार्श्वक:
Shrutaayu, his Supaarshvaka
तत:-चित्ररथ: यस्य
from him Chitraratha, whose
क्षेमधि:-मिथिला-अधिप:
Kshemadhi, Mithila's king
His Son was Arishtanemi, his son was also Shrutaayu, and his was Supaarshvaka, from him Chitraratha was born whose son was Mithila's king Kshemadhi.
तस्मात् समरथस्तस्य सुत: सत्यरथस्तत: ।
आसीदुपगुरुस्तस्मादुपगुप्तोऽग्निसंभव: ॥२४॥
तस्मात् समरथ:-तस्य
from him Samaratha, his son
सुत: सत्यरथ:-तत:
Satyaratha, from him
आसीत्-उपगुरु:-तस्मात्-
was Upaguru, from him
उपगुप्त:-अग्नि-संभव:
Upagupta, Agni's part
From Kshemadhi Samaratha was born, his son was Satyaratha, from him was born Upaguru, and from him was Upagupta, who was a part of the god of fire, Agni.
वस्वनन्तोऽथ तत्पुत्रो युयुधो यत् सुभाषण: ।
श्रुतस्ततो जयस्तस्माद् विजयोऽस्मादृत: सुत: ॥२५॥
वस्वनन्त:-अथ तत्-पुत्र:
Vasvananta, then, his son
युयुध: यत् सुभाषण:
Yuyudha, whose Subhaashana
श्रुत:-तत: जय:-तस्मात्
Shruta from him, Jaya from him
विजय:-अस्मात्-ऋत: सुत:
Vijaya from him Rita the son
Then, Vasvananta, his son Yuyudha, whose son was Subhaashana, from him Shruta was born, and Jaya was born from him, whose son was Vijaya and his son was Rita.
शुनकस्तत्सुतो जज्ञे वीतहव्यो धृतिस्तत: ।
बहुलाश्वो धृतेस्तस्य कृतिरस्य महावशी ॥२६॥
शुनक:-तत्-सुत: जज्ञे
Shunaka was his son was born
वीतहव्य: धृति:-तत:
Veetahavya, Dhriti from him
बहुलाश्व: धृते:-तस्य
Bahulaashva was Dhriti's son, his was
कृति:-अस्य महावशी
Kriti, his Mahaavashee
His son was Shunaka, then from him Veetahavya was born, and Dhriti from him, Dhriti's son was Bahulaashva, his son was Kriti and his son was Mahaavashee.
एते वै मैथिला राजन्नात्मविद्याविशारदा: ।
योगेश्वरप्रसादेन द्वन्द्वैर्मुक्ता गृहेष्वपि ॥२७॥
एते वै मैथिला: राजन्-
these indeed of Mithila, O King!
आत्म-विद्या-विशारदा:
in Self-knowledge experts
योगेश्वर-प्रसादेन
by Yogeshvara's grace
द्वन्द्वै:-मुक्ता: गृहेषु-अपि
from dualities free, in the house also
O King! Indeed these were the kings of Mithila, who were experts in Self-knowledge, and by the grace of Yogeshvara they were free from the dualities even in their households.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां नवमे स्कन्धे निमिवंशवर्णनं नाम त्रयोदशोऽध्याय: ॥१३॥
Thus ends the thirteenth discourse entitled 'The posterity of Nimi described', in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
