श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
यतिर्ययाति: संयातिरायतिर्वियति: कृति: ।

षडिमे नहुषस्यासन्निन्द्रियाणीव देहिन: ॥१॥


यति:-ययाति: संयाति:-
Yati, Yayaati, Sanyaati,
आयति:-वियति: कृति:
Aayati, Viyati, Kriti
षडिमे नहुषस्य-आसन्-
six these of Nahusha were (sons)
इन्द्रियाणि-इव देहिन:
senses, like of embodied souls

Yati, Yayaati, Sanyaati, Aayati, Viyati, Kriti, these were the six sons of Nahusha, like the six senses of the embodied soul.


राज्यं नैच्छद् यति: पित्रा दत्तं तत्परिणामवित् ।

यत्र प्रविष्ट: पुरुष आत्मानं नावबुध्यते ॥२॥


राज्यम् न-इच्छद् यति:
kingdom did not want Yati
पित्रा दत्तम् तत्-परिणाम-वित्
by the father given, its results knowing
यत्र प्रविष्ट: पुरुष:
where after entering a man
आत्मानम् न-अवबुध्यते
himself does not know

Yati did not want the kingdom which was offered to him by his father, because he knew the result of having it, and entering which a man does not know of himself.


पितरि भ्रंशिते स्थानादिन्द्राण्या धर्षणाद् द्विजै: ।

प्रापितेऽजगरत्वं वै ययातिरभवन्नृप: ॥३॥


पितरि भ्रंशिते स्थानात्-
father having been hurled from his place (heaven)
इन्द्राण्या धर्षणात् द्विजै:
with Indra's wife misconduct, by the Braahmanas
प्रापिते-अजगरत्वम्
and having attained to a python
वै ययाति:-अभवत्-नृप:
indeed Yayaati became the king

After his father, Nahusha was hurled from his place, the heaven, by the Braahmanas, and had become a python, for his misconduct with Indra's wife, indeed Yayaati became the king.


चतसृष्वादिशद् दिक्षु भ्रातृन् भ्राता यवीयस: ।

कृतदारो जुगोपोर्वीं काव्यस्य वृषपर्वण: ॥४॥


चतसृषु-आदिशत् दिक्षु
in the four appointed the directions,
भ्रातृन् भ्राता यवीयस:
the brothers, the brother the younger ones
कृत-दार: जुगोप-ऊर्वीम्
taken wife ruled the earth
काव्यस्य वृषपर्वण:
of Shukraachaaryaa and Vrishaparva

The brother appointed the four younger brothers in the four directions. Then having taken as his wife, the daughter of Shukraachaaryaa and Vrishaparva, he ruled the earth.


राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
ब्रह्मर्षिर्भगवान् काव्य: क्षत्रबन्धुश्च नाहुष: ।

राजन्यविप्रयो: कस्माद् विवाह: प्रतिलोमक: ॥५॥


ब्रह्मर्षि:-भगवान् काव्य:
Brahmanic sage the lord, Shukraachaaryaa
क्षत्रबन्धु:-च नाहुष:
Kshatriya and Nahusha's son
राजन्य-विप्रयो: कस्माद्
of the royal and Braahmana, how
विवाह: प्रतिलोमक:
was marriage of the opposite

'The lord Shukraachaaryaa was a Braahmana sage and the son of Nahusha a Kshatriya. How did a opposite marriage happen between a Braahmana girl and a Kshatriya man?'


श्री शुक उवाच -

एकदा दानवेन्द्रस्य शर्मिष्ठा नाम कन्यका ।

सखीसहस्रसंयुक्ता गुरुपुत्र्या च भामिनी ॥६॥


एकदा दानव-इन्द्रस्य
one day the Daanava chief's
शर्मिष्ठा नाम कन्यका
Sharmishthaa named daughter,
सखी-सहस्र संयुक्ता
with companions a thousand accompanied by
गुरु-पुत्र्या च भामिनी
and the preceptor's daughter, and the proud

One day, The Daanava chief's daughter the proud Sharmishthaa, a thousand girl companions and Devayaanee,the daughter of the preceptor, Shukraachaaryaa, accompanied by,…


देवयान्या पुरोद्याने पुष्पितद्रुमसङ्कुले ।

व्यचरत् कलगीतालिनलिनीपुलिनेऽबला ॥७॥


देवयान्या पुर-उद्याने
with Devayanee, in the city garden
पुष्पित-द्रुम-सङ्कुले
flowering trees clusters
व्यचरत् कल-गीत-अलि-
roamed, resounding the humming of the bees
नलिनी-पुलिने-अबला
with lotus ponds, the weak one

She, the weak one, with Devayaanee, was roaming in the city garden full of clusters of flowering trees, with lotus ponds resounding with the humming of the bees.


ता जलाशयमासाद्य कन्या: कमललोचना: ।

तीरे न्यस्य दुकूलानि विजह्रु: सिञ्चतीर्मिथ: ॥८॥


ता: जलाशयम्-आसाद्य
they the pond reaching,
कन्या: कमल-लोचना:
the girls, lotus eyed
तीरे न्यस्य दुकूलानि
on the bank placing the clothes,
विजह्रु: सिञ्चती:-मिथ:
sported, sprinkling one another (with water)

The lotus eyed girls, reached the pond and keeping the clothes on the side, sported in the water, sprinkling one another with it.


वीक्ष्य व्रजन्तं गिरिशं सह देव्या वृषस्थितम् ।

सहसोत्तीर्य वासांसि पर्यधुर्व्रीडिता: स्त्रिय: ॥९॥


वीक्ष्य व्रजन्तम् गिरिशम्
perceiving going Lord Shankara
सह देव्या वृष-स्थितम्
with the Goddess (Paarvati), on the bull mounted
सहसा-उत्तीर्य वासांसि
suddenly coming out, clothes
पर्यधु:-व्रीडिता: स्त्रिय:
put on, ashamed the ladies

The ladies observed Lord Shankara going that way mounted on the bull with the Goddess Paarvati. They were ashamed and suddenly came out of the pond and put on their clothes.


शर्मिष्ठाजानती वासो गुरुपुत्र्या: समव्ययत् ।

स्वीयं मत्वा प्रकुपिता देवयानीदमब्रवीत् ॥१०॥


शर्मिष्ठा-अजानती वास:
Sharmishthaa, unknowingly, the clothes
गुरु-पुत्र्या: समव्ययत्
of the preceptor's daughter wore
स्वीयम् मत्वा प्रकुपिता
own mistaking for, enraged
देवयानी इदम्-अब्रवीत्
Devayaanee, this said

Sharmishthaa, unknowingly put on the clothes of the preceptor's daughter, mistaking them to be her own. Enraged Devayaanee said this,…


अहो निरीक्ष्यतामस्या दास्या: कर्मह्यसाम्प्रतम् ।

अस्मद्धार्यं धृतवती शुनीव हविरध्वरे ॥११॥


अहो निरीक्ष्यताम्-अस्या:
’Oh! Look at this
दास्या: कर्म-हि-असाम्प्रतम्
maid's act indeed imprudent
अस्मत्-धार्यम् धृतवती
by us to be worn, has worn
शुनी-इव हवि:-अध्वरे
bitch like oblation of a sacrifice'

'Oh! Look at the imprudent act of this maid, indeed she has worn the clothes which were meant to be worn by us, like the bitch snatching the oblations of a sacrifice.'


यैरिदं तपसा सृष्टं मुखं पुंस: परस्य ये ।

धार्यते यैरिह ज्योति: शिव: पन्थाश्च दर्शित: ॥१२॥


यै:-इदम् तपसा सृष्टम्
by whom this (world), by austerities created
मुखम् पुंस: परस्य ये
the mouth of The Person Primary who are
धार्यते यै:-इह ज्योति:
is upheld by whom, here the lustrous
शिव: पन्था:-च दर्शित:
the blessed path and revealed

By whose (the Braahmanas') austerities this world is created, who are the mouth of That Primary Person, by whom the transcendent Brahman is cherished, and by whom the blessed path of the Vedas is revealed,…


यान् वन्दन्त्युपतिष्ठन्ते लोकनाथा: सुरेश्वरा: ।

भगवानपि विश्वात्मा पावन: श्रीनिकेतन: ॥१३॥


यान् वन्दन्ति-उपतिष्ठन्ते
whom pray, worship
लोकनाथा: सुर-ईश्वरा:
the spheres' guardians, of the gods' the rulers,
भगवान्-अपि विश्वात्मा
The Almighty Lord also, of the universe the Soul,
पावन: श्री-निकेतन:
The Purifier, of Shree The Abode

Whom the spheres' guardians pray and worship, the rulers of the gods', Indra etc, The Almighty Lord also, The Soul of the Universe, The Purifier, The Abode of Shree,…


वयं तत्रापि भृगव: शिष्योऽस्या न: पितासुर: ।

अस्मद्धार्यं धृतवती शूद्रो वेदमिवासती ॥१४॥


वयम् तत्र-अपि भृगव:
we, moreover are Bhrigus
शिष्य:-अस्या न: पिता-असुर:
disciple of her, our father the demon
अस्मत्-धार्यम् धृतवती
by us to be worn, has worn
शूद्र: वेदम्-इव-असती
Shudra the Vedas, like learns

Moreover, we are the descendents of the Bhrigus. Her father, the demon is our disciple. She has worn the clothes which were to be worn by us, just like a Shudra learns the Vedas.


एवं शपन्तीं शर्मिष्ठा गुरुपुत्रीमभाषत ।

रुषा श्वसन्त्युरङ्गीव धर्षिता दष्टदच्छदा ॥१५॥


एवम् शपन्तीम् शर्मिष्ठा
to the thus cursing, Sharmishthaa
गुरु-पुत्रीम्-अभाषत
to the preceptor's daughter said
रुषा श्वसन्ति-उरङ्गी-इव धर्षिता
in anger hissing, female serpent like hit
दष्ट-दच्छदा
lips biting

Sharmishthaa, then, in anger hissing like a hurt female serpent, biting her lips said to the preceptors' daughter, who was thus cursing her,...


आत्मवृत्तमविज्ञाय कत्थसे बहु भिक्षुकि ।

किं न प्रतीक्षसेऽस्माकं गृहान् बलिभुजो यथा ॥१६॥


आत्म-वृत्तम्-अविज्ञाय
own status not knowing
कत्थसे बहु भिक्षुकि
brag much, O Beggar!
किम् न प्रतीक्षसे-अस्माकम्
don't you wait at our
गृहान् बलि-भुज: यथा
houses, crows like

'O Beggar girl! You brag much, not knowing your status. Do you not wait at our houses like the crows?'


एवं विधै: सुपुरुषै: क्षिप्त्वाऽऽचार्यसुतां सतीम् ।

शर्मिष्ठा प्राक्षिपत कूपे वास आदाय मन्युना ॥१७॥


एवम् विधै: सुपुरुषै: क्षिप्त्वा-
thus, with such harsh words, insulting
आचार्य-सुताम् सतीम्
the preceptor's daughter, the noble
शर्मिष्ठा प्राक्षिपत कूपे
Sharmishthaa pushed in the well
वास आदाय मन्युना
clothes taking away in anger

Thus, with such harsh words insulting the noble daughter of the preceptor, Sharmishthaa pushed her in a well and took away the clothes in anger.


तस्यां गतायां स्वगृहं ययातिर्मृगयां चरन् ।

प्राप्तो यदृच्छया कूपे जलार्थी तां ददर्श ह ॥१८॥


तस्याम् गतायाम् स्व-गृहम्
her having gone to her house
ययाति:-मृगयाम् चरन्
Yayaati, for hunting roaming
प्राप्त: यदृच्छया कूपे
reached by chance to the well
जल-अर्थी ताम् ददर्श ह
water desiring, her saw indeed

She, having gone to her house, Yayaati roaming about for hunting, by chance reached the well, desiring to have water, and saw her (Devayanee) in there.


दत्त्वा स्वमुत्तरं वासस्तस्यै राजा विवासे ।

गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिमुज्जहार दयापर: ॥१९॥


दत्त्वा स्वम्-उत्तरम् वास:-
giving his own the upper cloth
तस्यै राजा विवासे
to her, king, the naked
गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिम्-
holding by hand, the hand
उज्जहार दया-पर:
lifted out, the kind hearted

The kind hearted king, gave the naked girl his own upper cloth, and holding her hand with his hand lifted her out.


तं वीरमाहौशनसी प्रेमनिर्भरया गिरा ।

राजंस्त्वया गृहीतो मे पाणि: परपुरञ्जय ॥२०॥


तम् वीरम्-आह-औशनसी
to him the hero, said Usana's daughter
प्रेम-निर्भरया गिरा
with love filled voice
राजन्-त्वया गृहीत: मे
'O King! By you is held my
पाणि: परपुरञ्जय
hand, of enemies cities' conqueror!'

Usana's daughter, Devayanee, said to the hero in voice full of love, 'O King, the conqueror of the cities of the enemies! My hand has been held by you.'


हस्तग्राहोऽपरो मा भूद् गृहीतायास्त्वया हि मे ।

एष ईशकृतो वीर सम्बन्धो नौ न पौरुष: ।

यदिदं कूपलग्नाया भवतो दर्शनं मम ॥२१॥


हस्त-ग्राह:-अपर: मा भूद्
hand holding, by another may not be
गृहीताया:-त्वया हि मे
having been held by you, indeed my
एष: ईश-कृत: वीर
this is by The Lord ordained, O Valiant one!
सम्बन्ध: नौ न पौरुष:
relation ours, not by mortal
यत्-इदम्-कूप-लग्नाया:
that this in the well fallen
भवत: दर्शनम् मम
your sight to me

'O Valiant King! this hand of mine held by you, may it not be held by any other. This relation of ours, is ordained by The Lord and is not the doing of man, in that, I should have got your sight when I was clinging to the inside of the well.'


न ब्राह्मणो मे भविता हस्तग्राहो महाभुज ।

कचस्य बार्हस्पत्यस्य शापाद् यमशपं पुरा ॥२२॥


न ब्राह्मण: मे भविता
not a Braahmana, my will be
हस्त-ग्राह: महाभुज
the hand holder (husband), O Long armed one!
कचस्य बार्हस्पत्यस्य
by Kaccha, the son of Brihaspati
शापाद् यम्-अशपम् पुरा
curse, whom I had cursed before

'O Long armed one! A Braahmana will not be my husband because of the curse of Kaccha, the son of Brihaspati, whom I had once cursed.'


ययातिरनभिप्रेतं दैवोपहृतमात्मन: ।

मनस्तु तद्गतं बुद्ध्वा प्रतिजग्राह तद्वच: ॥२३॥


ययाति:-अनभिप्रेतम्
to Yayaati was not desireable
दैव-उपहृतम्-आत्मन:
by fate ordained to himself,
मन:-तु तत्-गतम् बुद्ध्वा
(own) mind also, to her inclined understanding
प्रतिजग्राह तत्-वच:
accepted her words

That it was by fate ordained, was not very desireable to Yayaati, but recognizing it to be fate ordained and also understanding that his mind was inclined towards her, he accepted her words.


गते राजनि सा वीरे तत्र स्म रुदती पितु: ।

न्यवेदयत् तत: सर्वमुक्तं शर्मिष्ठया कृतम् ॥२४॥


गते राजनि सा वीरे
having gone the king, she, the valiant,
तत्र स्म रुदती पितु:
there, from crying to her father
न्यवेदयत् तत: सर्वम्-उक्तम्
related then, all said
शर्मिष्ठया कृतम्
by Sharmishthaa was done

Then, after the valiant king had gone from there, she went crying from there only to her father and related to him all that Sharmishthaa had said and done.


दुर्मना भगवान् काव्य: पौरोहित्यं विगर्हयन् ।

स्तुवन् वृत्तिं च कापोतीं दुहित्रा स ययौ पुरात् ॥२५॥


दुर्मना भगवान् काव्य:
disheartened, the glorious Kaavya
पौरोहित्यम् विगर्हयन्
priesthood condemning
स्तुवन् वृत्तिम् च कापोतीम्
praising the life and of a pigeon
दुहित्रा स: ययौ पुरात्
with the daughter he went from the city

The glorious sage Kaavya, (Shukraachaaryaa) was disheartened and condemned priesthood and praised the life of a pigeon instead and went away from the city with his daughter.


वृशपर्वा तमाज्ञाय प्रत्यनीकविवक्षितम् ।

गुरुं प्रसादयन् मूर्ध्ना पादयो: पतित: पथि ॥२६॥


वृशपर्वा तम्-आज्ञाय
Vrishaparva, that knowing
प्रत्यनीक-विवक्षितम्
of the enemy's conspiracy
गुरुम् प्रसादयन्
the preceptor to pacify
मूर्ध्ना पादयो:पतित: पथि
by the head in the feet, fell in the way

Vrishaparva, knowing that to be a conspiracy of the enemy, fell with his head at the feet of the preceptor to pacify him, on the way itself.


क्षणार्धमन्युर्भगवान् शिष्यं व्याचष्ट भार्गव: ।

कामोऽस्या: क्रियतां राजन् नैनां त्यक्तुमिहोत्सहे ॥२७॥


क्षण-अर्ध-मन्यु:-भगवान्
moment half of anger of the glorious
शिष्यम् व्याचष्ट भार्गव:
to the disciple said the scion of the Bhrigus
काम:-अस्या: क्रियताम् राजन्
desire her's be fulfilled, O king!
न-एनाम् त्यक्तुम्-इह-उत्सहे
not her to leave here am able

The scion of the Bhrigus', Shukraachaaryaa had half a moment's anger. He softly said to his disciple, 'O king! Let her (Devyaanee's) desire be fulfilled. I am unable to leave her here like this.'


तथेत्यवस्थिते प्राह देवयानी मनोगतम् ।

पित्रा दत्ता यतो यास्ये सानुगा यातु मामनु ॥२८॥


तथा-इति-अवस्थिते प्राह
'so be it', and standing, said
देवयानी मनोगतम्
Devayanee, here heart's desire
पित्रा दत्ता यत: यास्ये
'by father given, where (I) go
सानुगा यातु माम्-अनु
along with (the attendents) may go, me following

Vrishaparva stood waiting, having said, 'so be it.' Then, Devayanee spoke her mind. 'Given by father, where ever I go, may Sharmishthaa follow me along with her attendents.'


स्वानां तत् सङ्कटं वीक्ष्य तदर्थस्य च गौरवम् ।

देवयानीं पर्यचरत् स्त्रीसहस्रेण दासवत् ॥२९॥


स्वानाम् तत् सङ्कटम् वीक्ष्य
of own people that danger perceiving
तत्-अर्थस्य च गौरवम्
of that purpose and the magnitude
देवयानीम् पर्यचरत्
Devayanee served
स्त्री-सहस्रेण दास-वत्
with women thousand, servant like

Sharmishthaa perceived the danger to her own people and also the magnitude of the purpose, and so served Devayanee like a servant along with her thousand women attendents.


नाहुषाय सुताम् दत्त्वा सह शर्मिष्ठयोशना ।

तमाह राजञ्छर्मिष्ठामाधास्तल्पे न कर्हिचित् ॥३०॥


नाहुषाय सुताम् दत्त्वा
to Nahusha's son (Yayaati), daughter giving,
सह शर्मिष्ठया-उशना
with Sharmishthaa, Shukraachaaryaa
तम्-आह राजन्-शर्मिष्ठाम्-
to him said, 'O King! Sharmishthaa
आधा:-तल्पे न कर्हिचित्
bring to bed not ever'

Shukraachaaryaa gave his daughter Devayanee, to Nahusha's son Yayaati, along with Sharmishthaa and her retinue. He said to the king, 'O king! Do not ever bring Sharmishthaa to your bed.'


विलोक्यौशनसीं राजञ्छर्मिष्ठा सप्रजां क्वचित् ।

तमेव बब्रे रहसि सख्या: पतिमृतौ सती ॥३१॥


विलोक्य-औशनसीम् राजन्-
perceiving Shukraachaarya's daughter, O King!
शर्मिष्ठा सप्रजाम् क्वचित्
Sharmishthaa, with a son, once
तम्-एव बब्रे रहसि
to him only said in seclusion
सख्या: पतिम्-ऋतौ सती
her friend's husband, in period when

O King Pareekshita!, Once Sharmishthaa saw the daughter of Shukraachaaryaa with a son. She said to her friend's husband only in seclusion for progeny, while she was in periods.


राजपुत्र्यार्थितोऽपत्ये धर्मं चावेक्ष्य धर्मवित् ।

स्मरञ्छुक्रवच: काले दिष्टमेवाभ्यपद्यत ॥३२॥


राजपुत्र्या-अर्थित:-अपत्ये
by the princess requested for progeny,
धर्मम् च-अवेक्ष्य धर्मवित्
righteousness considering, righteousness knower,
स्मरन्-शुक्र-वच: काले
remembering Shukra's words in time,
दिष्टम्-एव-अभ्यपद्यत
destiny only considered

The knower of righteousness, king Yayaati, thus requested by the princess Sharmishthaa for progeny, considering it sacred, and in time remembering the words of Shukraachaaryaa, considered that to be ordained by destiny only .


यदुं च तुर्वसुं चैव देवयानी व्यजायत ।

द्रुह्युं चानुं पूरुं च शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी ॥३३॥


यदुम् च तुर्वसुम् च-एव
Yadu, and Turvasu and also
देवयानी व्यजायत
Devayanee gave birth to
द्रह्युम् च-अनुम् पूरुम् च
Drahyu and Anu, Pooru and
शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी
Sharmishthaa, Vrishparva's daughter

Devayanee gave birth to Yadu, and also Turvasu. Vrishaparva's daughter Sharmishthaa gave birth to Drahyu and Anu and Pooru.


गर्भसम्भवमासुर्या भर्तुर्विज्ञाय मानिनी ।

देवयानी पितुर्गेहं ययौ क्रोधविमूर्छिता ॥३४॥


गर्भ-सम्भवम्-आसुर्या
conceived of Asura's daughter
भर्तु:-विज्ञाय मानिनी
by husband knowing, the haughty
देवयानी पितु:-गेहम्
Devayanee father's house
ययौ क्रोध-विमूर्छिता
went to, in anger overwhelmed

The haughty Devayaanee coming to know that the Asura king's daughter Sharmishthaa had conceived through her own husband, she, overwhelmed with rage went away to her father's house.


प्रियामनुगत: कामी वचोभिरुपमन्त्रयन् ।

न प्रसादयितुं शेके पादसंवाहनादिभि: ॥३५॥


प्रियाम्-अनुगत: कामी
the beloved following, the uxorious
वचोभि:-उपमन्त्रयन्
by words pleasing
न प्रसादयितुम् शेके
did not to pacify was able
पाद-संवाहन-आदिभि:
by feet kneading and such

The uxorious Yayaati followed his beloved and tried to pacify her by pleasing words but he was not able to do so even by kneading her feet and such devices.


शुक्रस्तमाह कुपित: स्त्रीकामानृतपूरुष ।

त्वां जरा विशतां मन्द विरूपकरणी नृणाम् ॥३६॥


शुक्र:-तम्-आह कुपित:
Shukra to him said enraged
स्त्री-कामा-अनृत-पूरुष
'Hankering after women, untruthful man
त्वाम् जरा विशताम्
to you old age may overtake
मन्द विरूपकरणी नृणाम्
O Fool! which disfigures human beings'

The enraged Shukra said to him, 'O you untruthful man hankering after women, O fool! May old age overtake you which disfigures human beings.'


ययाति:-उवाच -
Yayaati said -
अतृप्तोऽस्म्यद्य कामानां ब्रह्मन् दुहितरि स्म ते ।

व्यत्यस्यतां यथाकामं वयसा योऽभिधास्यति ॥३७॥


अतृप्त:-अस्मि-अद्य
unsated am I today
कामानाम् ब्रह्मन्
of pleasures, O Holy Braahmana!
दुहितरि स्म ते
with daughter of yours
व्यत्यस्यताम् यथा-कामम्
'interchange, at will,
वयसा य:-अभिधास्यति
with age who wants to give'

'O Holy Braahmana! Till today I am unsated with the pleasures in the company of your daughter.' 'Exchange, at will, the age of a youth, with who ever who wants to give.'


इति लब्धव्यवस्थान: पुत्रं ज्येष्ठमवोचत ।

यदो तात प्रतीच्छेमां जरां देहि निजं वय: ॥३८॥


इति लब्ध-व्यवस्थान:
this having got the arrangement,
पुत्रम् ज्येष्ठम्-अवोचत
to the son, eldest said
यदो तात प्रतीच्छ-इमाम्
'O Yadu, son! take this
जराम् देहि निजम् वय:
old age, give your youth'

Having got such an arrangement, he said to his eldest son, 'O Dear Yadu! Take this old age and give your youth'.


मातामहकृतां वत्स न तृप्तो विषयेष्वहम् ।

वयसा भवदीयेन रंस्ये कतिपया: समा: ॥३९॥


मातामह-कृताम् वत्स
by (your) maternal grandfather inflicted, O Son!
न तृप्त: विषयेषु-अहम्
Not sated in sense pleasures, I,
वयसा भवदीयेन
by age yours
रंस्ये कतिपया: समा:
will enjoy for some years

'This old age is inflicted on me by your maternal grandfather. O Son! I am not sated of sense pleasures. With your youth I will enjoy for some years.'


यदु:-उवाच -
Yadu said -
नोत्सहे जरसा स्थातुमन्तरा प्राप्तया तव ।

अविदित्वा सुखं ग्राम्यं वैतृष्ण्यं नैति पूरुष: ॥४०॥


न-उत्सहे जरसा स्थातुम्-
am not interested in old age to be,
अन्तरा प्राप्तया तव
in the middle, obtained by you
अविदित्वा सुखम् ग्राम्यम्
not knowing the pleasures of the senses
वैतृष्ण्यम् न-एति पूरुष:
dispassion does not achieve man

'I am not interested to live in the old age which is obtained by you in mid-life. Not knowing the crude sense pleasure, a man does not achieve dispassion.'


तुर्वसुश्चोदित: पित्रा द्रुह्युश्चानुश्च भारत ।

प्रत्याचख्युरधर्मज्ञा ह्यनित्ये नित्यबुद्धय: ॥४१॥


तुर्वसु:-च-उदित: पित्रा
Turvasu and told by the father,
द्रुह्यु:-च-अनु:-च भारत
Druhyu and Anu and, O Scion of the Bharatas!
प्रत्याचख्यु:-अधर्मज्ञा:
replied, (they) not knowers of righteousness
हि-अनित्ये नित्य-बुद्धय:
indeed in the transient having the eternal's sense

O Scion of the Bharatas! Turvasu, Druhyu and Anu were urged by their father, but they declined, not knowing righteousness, and having the sense of the eternal in the transient.


अपृच्छत् तनयं पूरुं वयसोनं गुणाधिकम् ।

न त्वमग्रजवद् वत्स मां प्रत्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥४२॥


अपृच्छत् तनयम् पूरुम्
asked the son Pooru,
वयसा-ऊनम् गुण-अधिकम्
in age small, in virtues superior
न त्वम्-अग्रज-वद् वत्स
'not you, elder brothers like, O Son!
माम् प्रत्याख्यातुम्-अर्हसि
To me, to refuse are able'

Yayaati then asked his son Pooru, who was younger in age but superior in virtues. And said, 'O Son! You are not capable to refuse me like your elder brothers.'


पूरु:उवाच -
Pooru said -
को नु लोके मनुष्येन्द्र पितुरात्मकृत: पुमान् ।

प्रतिकर्तुं क्षमो यस्य प्रसादाद् विन्दते परम् ॥४३॥


क: नु लोके मनुष्येन्द्र
who indeed in this world, O Ruler of men!
पितु:-आत्मकृत: पुमान्
of the father, self created man
प्रतिकर्तुम् क्षम: यस्य
to repay is capable, by whose
प्रसादात् विन्दते परम्
grace achieves the Supreme

' O Ruler of men! In this world, indeed, which man, who is created by his father, can repay him, and by whose grace he is capable of achieving the Supreme goal?'


उत्तमश्चिन्तितं कुर्यात् प्रोक्तकारी तु मध्यम: ।

अधमोऽश्रद्धया कुर्यादकर्तोच्चरितं पितु: ॥४४॥


उत्तम:-चिन्तितम् कुर्यात्
the best (son is), thought of may do
प्रोक्त-कारी तु मध्यम:
told, and does indeed is mediocre
अधम:-अश्रद्धया कुर्यात्-
the lowest with irreverence may do,
अकर्ता-उच्चरितम् पितु:
does not do, is refuse of father

'The best son is the one who does in anticipation, what the father wants. The mediocre is the one who does what he is told to do. The lowest son is the one who does without reverence, and the one who does not do at all, is the refuse of his father.'


इति प्रमुदित: पूरु: प्रत्यगृह्णाज्जरां पितु: ।

सोऽपि तद्वयसा कामान् यथावज्जुजुषे नृप ॥४५॥


इति प्रमुदित: पूरु:
thus with delight Pooru
प्रत्यगृह्णात्-जराम् पितु:
accepted old age of father
स:-अपि तत्-वयसा कामान्
he also by that age, desires
यथा-वत्-जुजुषे नृप
like before enjoyed O King!

O King! Thus, Pooru gladly accepted his father's old age, and he, Yayaati also enjoyed the pleasures with that young age like before.


सप्तद्वीपपति: सम्यक् पितृवत् पालयन् प्रजा: ।

यथोपजोषं विषयाञ्जुजुषेऽव्याहतेन्द्रिय: ॥४६॥


सप्त-द्वीप-पति: सम्यक्
of the seven continents the ruler, very well,
पितृ-वत् पालयन् प्रजा:
father like protecting the people
यथा-उपजोषम् विषयान्-
as per pleasure, the sense objects
जुजुषे-अव्याहत-इन्द्रिय:
enjoyed with undiminished senses

The ruler of the seven continents, Yayaati, protected his people very well, like a father, and at will enjoyed the pleasures of the sense objects with undiminished senses.


देवयान्यप्यनुदिनं मनोवाग्देहवस्तुभि: ।

प्रेयस: परमां प्रीतिमुवाह प्रेयसी रह: ॥४७॥


देवयानी-अपि-अनुदिनम्
Devayanee also, day after day,
मन:-वाक्-देह-वस्तुभि:
by mind, speech, body and articles
प्रेयस: परमाम् प्रीतिम्-
to the dear (husband) supreme delight
उवाह प्रेयसी रह:
extended the beloved in private

The beloved Devayanee also, day after day extended supreme delight to her dear husband, with mind, speech, body and articles, in private.


अयजद् यज्ञपुरुषं क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणै: ।

सर्वदेवमयं देवं सर्वदेवमयं हरिम् ॥४८॥


अयजद् यज्ञ-पुरुषम्
propitiated (Yayaati), the sacrifice presiding Lord,
क्रतुभि:-भूरि-दक्षिणै:
by sacrifices of liberal gifts
सर्व-देवमयम् देवम्
the all gods encompassing Deity
सर्व-देवमयम् हरिम्
The All gods encompassing Lord Shree Hari

Yayaati propitiated the Lord presiding over the sacrifices, The Deity encompassing all gods, The Lord Shree Hari encompassing all the gods, with liberally gifted sacrifices.


यस्मिन्निदं विरचितं व्योम्नीव जलदावलि: ।

नानेव भाति नाभाति स्वप्नमायामनोरथ: ॥४९॥


यस्मिन्-इदम् विरचितम्
in Whom this created (world)
व्योम्नि-इव जलद-अवलि:
in the sky, like of clouds a mass
नाना-इव भाति न-आभाति
various like appears, does not appear
स्वप्न-माया-मनोरथ:
dream, illusion, fancy

On Whom, The Lord, this created world is super imposed, like a mass of clouds of various shapes, now appearing, now disappearing, as baseless as a dream, illusion or fancy.


तमेव हृदि विन्यस्य वासुदेवं गुहाशयम् ।

नारायणमणीयांसं निराशीरयजत् प्रभुम् ॥५०॥


तम्-एव हृदि विन्यस्य
Him alone in the heart placing
वासुदेवम् गुहाशयम्
Vaasudeva in the core of the heart
नारायणम्-अणीयांसम्
Naaraayana the subtler of the subtle
निराशी:-अयजत् प्रभुम्
desire less worshipped The Lord

Yayaati, then, desire less, worshipped Him alone, placing Him, Vaasudeva, in the core of his heart, the Indwellers of the hearts, Naaraayana, The subtler of the subtle, and worshipped The Lord there-in.


एवं वर्ष सहस्राणि मन:षष्ठैर्मन:सुखम् ।

विदधानोऽपि नातृप्यत् सार्वभौम: कदिन्द्रियै: ॥५१॥


एवम् वर्ष सहस्राणि
thus for years a thousand
मन:-षष्ठै:-मन-:सुखम्
by mind the sixth, heart's desires
विदधान:-अपि न-अतृप्यत्
enjoying also was not sated
सार्वभौम: कदिन्द्रियै:
the emperor by the wicked senses

Thus, for a thousand years, with the wicked senses, and mind as the sixth, Yayaati, the emperor, enjoyed the desired pleasures and was not sated.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायाम् नवमे स्कन्धे अष्टादशोऽध्याय: ॥१८॥


Thus ends the eighteenth discourse in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
