Shree Shuka said -
वितथस्य सुतो मन्युर्बृहत्क्षत्रो जयस्तत: ।
महावीर्यो नरो गर्ग: सङ्कृतिस्तु नरात्मज: ॥१॥
वितथस्य सुत: मन्यु:-

बृहत्क्षत्र: जय:-तत:
Brihatkshatra, Jaya, from him,
महावीर्य: नर: गर्ग:
Mahaaveerya, Nara, Garga,
सङ्कृति:-तु नर-आत्मज:
Sangkriti indeed Nara's son
The son of Vitatha, Bharadvaaja, was Manyu. From him were Brihatkshatra, Jaya, Mahaaveerya, Nara, and Garga. Sangkriti indeed was Nara's son.
गुरुश्च रन्तिदेवश्च सङ्कृते: पाण्डुनन्दन ।
रन्तिदेवस्य हि यश: इहामुत्र च गीयते ॥२॥

and Guru and Rantideva
सङ्कृते: पाण्डुनन्दन
of Sangkriti (the sons), O Paandu's delight!
रन्तिदेवस्य हि यश:
of Rantideva indeed fame
इह-अमुत्र च गीयते
here and beyond is sung
Guru and Rantideva were the sons of Sangkriti. O Paandu's delight! Indeed the fame of Rantideva is sung of in this world and beyond.
वियद्वित्तस्य ददतो लब्धं लब्धं बुभुक्षत: ।
निष्किञ्चनस्य धीरस्य सकुटुम्बस्य सीदत: ॥३॥
वियद्-वित्तस्य ददत: लब्धम्
by chance wealth gave, got
लब्धम् बुभुक्षत:
got, hungry
निष्किञ्चनस्य धीरस्य
having nothing, peaceful
सकुटुम्बस्य सीदत:
along with the family suffered
Even what ever wealth he got by chance, he gave away in charity. Having got nothing of himself, he was peaceful though he suffered along with the family.
व्यतीयुरष्टचत्वारिंशदहान्यपिबत: किल ।
घृतपायससंयावं तोयं प्रातरुपस्थितम् ॥४॥
व्यतीयु:-अष्ट-चत्वारिंशत्-
passed, eight forty
अहानि-अपिबत: किल
days, not having drunk at all
घृत-पायस-संयावम्
ghee, milk porridge
तोयम् प्रात:-उपस्थितम्
water in the morning appeared
Forty eight days had passed when he had not eaten or drunk anything. The next morning, a porridge of ghee and milk and water appeared.
कृच्छ्रप्राप्तकुटुम्बस्य क्षुत्तृड्भ्यां जातवेपथो: ।
अतिथिर्ब्राह्मण: काले भोक्तुकामस्य चागमत् ॥५॥
कृच्छ्र-प्राप्त-कुटुम्बस्य
difficulties facing family
क्षुत्-तृड्भ्याम् जात-वेपथो:
by hunger and thirst came trembling
अतिथि:-ब्राह्मण: काले
guest a Braahmana, at the time
भोक्तु-कामस्य च-आगमत्
to eat wanting and came
His family having to face difficulties, had developed trembling in the body. At just the time when he was about to eat, a guest Braahmana came there.
तस्मै संव्यभजत् सोऽन्नमादृत्य श्रद्धयान्वित: ।
हरिं सर्वत्र संपश्यन् स भुक्त्वा प्रययौ द्विज: ॥६॥
तस्मै संव्यभजत् स:-
for him a good portion, he,
अन्नम्-आदृत्य श्रद्धया-अन्वित:
the food respectfully, with reverence combined
हरिम् सर्वत्र संपश्यन्
The Lord Shree Hari every where perceiving
स: भुक्त्वा प्रययौ द्विज:
he, after eating, went away the Braahmana
He, Rantideva, perceiving The Lord Shree Hari everywhere, gave a good portion of the food to him with respect and reverence combined. The Braahmana also went away after eating the food.
अथान्यो भोक्ष्यमाणस्य विभक्तस्य महीपते ।
विभक्तं व्यभजत् तस्मै वृषलाय हरिं स्मरन् ॥७॥
अथ-अन्य: भोक्ष्यमाणस्य
then, another, as was about to eat
विभक्तस्य महीपते
the divided, O King!
विभक्तम् व्यभजत् तस्मै
the divided further divided for that
वृषलाय हरिम् स्मरन्
Shudra, Shree Hari remembering
O King! As he was about to eat the divided food, another came. For him, the Shudra, he further divided the food, remembering Shree Hari.
याते शूद्रे तमन्योऽगादतिथि: श्वभिरावृत: ।
राजन् मे दीयतामन्नं सगणाय बुभुक्षते ॥८॥
याते शूद्रे तम्-अन्य:-
having gone the Shudra, to him, another
अगात्-अतिथि: श्वभि:-आवृत:
came, guest by dogs following
राजन् मे दीयताम्-अन्नम्
'O king! to me give food
सगणाय बुभुक्षते
along with the followers hungry'
After the Shudra had left, there came to him another guest followed by dogs. He said, 'O King! Give me and my followers food, as we are hungry.'
स आदृत्यावशिष्टं यद् बहुमानपुरस्कृतम् ।
तच्च दत्त्वा नमश्चक्रे श्वभ्य: श्वपतये विभु: ॥९॥
स: आदृत्य-अवशिष्टम् यत्
he with reverence, the left over that
बहुमान-पुरस्कृतम्
with great honour presented
तत्-च दत्त्वा नम:-चक्रे
that and having given, bowed
श्वभ्य: श्वपतये विभु:
to the dogs and the dogs' master, the king
He, the king with reverence and great honour presented the left over food to the dogs and their master and then bowed to them.
पानीयमात्रमुच्छेषं तच्चैकपरितर्पणम् ।
पास्यत: पुल्कसोऽभ्यागादपो देह्यशुभस्य मे ॥१०॥
पानीय-मात्रम्-उच्छेषम्
water alone was left
तत्-च-एक-परितर्पणम्
that and one satisfying
पास्यत: पुल्कस:-अभ्यागात्-
as was about to drink, a Chaandaala, came,
अप: देहि-अशुभस्य मे
'Water give to unlucky me'
Drinking water, enough to satisfy one person's thirst, as he was about to drink, unexpectedly, a Chaandaala came, saying, 'Give the water to unlucky me.'
तस्य तां करुणां वाचं निशम्य विपुलश्रमाम् ।
कृपया भृशसन्तप्त इदमाहामृतं वच: ॥११॥
तस्य ताम् करुणाम् वाचम्
his that pitiable words
निशम्य विपुल-श्रमाम्
hearing with great effort
कृपया भृश-सन्तप्त
with compassion very much overcome
इदम्-आह-अमृतम् वच:
this said, nectar like words
Hearing those pitiable words of his, spoken with great effort, the king very much overcome with compassion, spoke these nectar like words,….
न काम्येऽहं गतिमीश्वरात् परामष्टर्द्धियुक्तामपुनर्भवं वा ।
आर्तिं प्रपद्येऽखिलदेहभाजमन्त:स्थितो येन भवन्त्यदु:खा: ॥१२॥
न काम्ये-अहम् गतिम्-
do not desire I the position
ईश्वरात् पराम्-अष्ट-ऋद्धि-
from The Lord, highest of the eight Yogic power
युक्ताम्-अपुनर्भवम् वा
including final beatitude or
आर्तिम् प्रपद्ये-अखिल-
sufferings will endure of all
देह-भाजम्-अन्त:-स्थित:
embodied souls, in the hearts dwelling
येन भवन्ति-अदु:खा:
by which they become sorrow less
'I do not desire from The Lord, the highest position inclusive of the eight Yogic powers, or the final beatitude, I wish to dwell in the hearts of all the embodied souls and endure their sufferings, so that they become sorrow less.'
क्षुत्तृट्श्रमो गात्रपरिश्रमश्च दैन्यं क्लम: शोकविषादमोहा: ।
सर्वे निवृता: कृपणस्य जन्तोर्जिजीविषोर्जीवजलार्पणान्मे ॥१३॥
क्षुत्-तृट्-श्रम: गात्र-परिश्रम:-
hunger, thirst, fatigue, physical weariness
च दैन्यम् क्लम:
and low spirits, languor,
शोक-विषाद-मोहा:
grief, sorrow, infatuation
सर्वे निवृता: कृपणस्य
all have gone to this poor
जन्तो:-जिजीविषो:-जीव-
fellow, wanting to live, life (like)
जल-अर्पणात्-मे
water being given by me
'My hunger, thirst, fatigue, physical weariness and low spirits, languor, grief, sorrow, infatuation have all vanished by my giving the life itself water to this poor fellow anxious to survive.'
इति प्रभाष्य पानीयं म्रियमाण: पिपासया ।
पुल्कसायाददाद्वीरो निसर्गकरुणो नृप: ॥१४॥
इति प्रभाष्य पानीयम्
this having said, the drinking water,
म्रियमाण: पिपासया
the dying by thirst
पुल्कसाय-ददात्-
to the Chaandaala gave
वीर: निसर्ग-करुण: नृप:
the noble by nature compassionate king
So saying, he, the noble king, compassionate by nature, though dying of thirst himself, gave the drinking water to the Chaandaala.
तस्य त्रिभुवनाधीशा: फलदा: फलमिच्छताम् ।
आत्मानं दर्शयाञ्चक्रुर्माया विष्णुविनिर्मिता: ॥१५॥
तस्य त्रिभुवन-अधीशा:
for him, of the three spheres, The Lords,
फलदा: फलम्-इच्छताम्
Bestower of rewards to the rewards seeking
आत्मानम् दर्शयान्-चक्रु:-
Themselves revealed in person
माया विष्णु-विनिर्मिता:
by Maaya of Vishnu who had appeared
The Lords of the three spheres, the Bestower of rewards for them who seek rewards, Who by Lord Vishnu's Maayaa had appeared in illusory forms, revealed themselves in person, for him.
स वै तेभ्यो नमस्कृत्य नि:सङ्गो विगतस्पृह: ।
वासुदेवे भगवति भक्त्या चक्रे मन: परम् ॥१६॥
स: वै तेभ्य: नमस्कृत्य
he, indeed, to them greeted
नि:सङ्ग: विगत-स्पृह:
unattached, free of desires
वासुदेवे भगवति भक्त्या
in Vaasudeva The Lord with devotion
चक्रे मन: परम्
engaged mind great
He, indeed greeted them all, and unattached and devoid of all desires, with great devotion, fixed his mind in Lord Vaasudeva.
ईश्वरालम्बनं चित्तं कुर्वतोऽनन्यराधस: ।
माया गुणमयी राजन् स्वप्नवत् प्रत्यलीयत ॥१७॥
ईश्वर-अलम्बनम्-चित्तम्
in God concentrated mind
कुर्वत:-अनन्य-राधस:
fixing, by non other feeling (than devotion)
माया गुणमयी राजन्
Maayaa, consisting of the Gunas, O King!
स्वप्नवत् प्रत्यलीयत
dream like dissolved
O King! As he had his mind concentrated and fixed in God with no other feeling than devotion, Maayaa, consisting of the three Gunas, dissolved like a dream.
तत्प्रसङ्गानुभावेन रन्तिदेवानुवर्तिन: ।
अभवन् योगिन: सर्वे नारायणपरायणा: ॥१८॥
तत्-प्रङ्ग-अनुभावेन
with his association and effect
रन्तिदेव-अनुवर्तिन:
Rantidevas followers
अभवन् योगिन: सर्वे
became Yogis all
नारायण-परायणा:
Naaraayana devotees
All the followers of Rantideva, by his association and influence, became Yogis and exclusive devotees of Naaraayana.
गर्गाच्छिनिस्ततो गार्ग्य: क्षत्राद् ब्रह्म ह्यवर्तत ।
दुरितक्षयो महावीर्यात् तस्य त्रय्यारुणि: कवि: ॥१९॥
गर्गात्-शिनि:-तत: गार्ग्य:
from Garga Shini, from him Gaargya
क्षत्राद् ब्रह्म हि-अवर्तत
from Kshatriyas, Braahmanas indeed, emerged
दुरितक्षय: महावीर्यात्
Duratikshaya, from Mahaaveerya
तस्य त्रय्यारुणि: कवि:
his Trayyaaruni and Kavi
From Garga Shani was born, from him was born Gaargya. From Kshatriyas, the Braahmanas emerged, from Mahaaveerya Duratikshaya, and his sons were Trayyaaruni and Kavi.
पुष्करारुणिरित्यत्र ये ब्राह्मणगतिं गता: ।
बृहत्क्षत्रस्य पुत्रोऽभूद्हस्ती यद् हस्तिनापुरम् ॥२०॥
पुष्करारुणि:-इति-अत्र ये
Pushkaraaruni this , here those
ब्राह्मण-गतिम् गता:
Braahmana hood attained
बृहत्क्षत्रस्य पुत्र:-अभूत्-हस्ती
Brihatkshatra's son was Hasti,
यत् हस्तिनापुरम्
who Hastinaapura (built)
And Pushkaraaruni=. This here is the description of those who attained Braahmana hood. Brihatkshatra's son was Hasti, who built the city of Hastinaapura.
अजमीडो द्विमीढश्च पुरुमीढश्च हस्तिन: ।
अजमीढस्य वंश्या: स्यु: प्रियमेधादयो द्विजा: ॥२१॥

Ajaameedha, Devameedha and
पुरुमीढ:-च हस्तिन:
Purumeedha and of Hastee
अजमीढस्य वंश्या: स्यु:
of Alameda's race were,
प्रियमेध-आदय: द्विजा:
Priyamedha and other Braahmanas
Ajameedha, Dvimeedha and Purumeedha were Hastee's sons. In the race of Ajameedha were Priyamedha and other Braahmanas.
अजमीढाद् बृहदिषुस्तस्य पुत्रो बृहद्धनु: ।
बृहत्कायस्ततस्तस्य पुत्र आसीज्जयद्रथ: ॥२२॥
अजमीढात् बृहदिषु:-
from Ajaameedha, Brihadishu,
तस्य पुत्र: बृहद्धनु:
his son Brihaddhanu,
बृहत्काय:-तत:-
Brihatkaaya, from him,
तस्य पुत्र: आसीत्-जयद्रथ:
his son was Jayadratha
From Ajameedha Brihadishu was born, his son was Brihaddhanu, from him was born Brihatkaaya, and his son was Jayadratha.
तत्सुतो विशदस्तस्य सेनजित् समजायत ।
रुचिराश्वो दृढहनु: काश्यो वत्सश्च तत्सुता: ॥२३॥
तत्-सुत: विशद:-
his son was Vishada,
तस्य सेनजित् समजायत
his Sainajit was born,
रुचिराश्व: दृढहनु: काश्य:
Ruchiraashva, Dridhahanu, Kaashya
वत्स:-च तत्-सुत:
Vatsa and were his sons
Jayadratha's son was Vishada, to him Sainajit was born. Ruchiraashva, Dridhahanu, Kaashya and Vatsa were his sons.
रुचिराश्वसुत: पार: पृथुसेनस्तदात्मज: ।
पारस्य तनयो नीपस्तस्य पुत्रशतं त्वभूत् ॥२४॥
रुचिराश्व-सुत: पार:
Ruchiraashva's son was Paara,
पृथुसेन:-तत्-आत्मज:
Prithusena was his son
पारस्य तनय: नीप:-
Paara's son was Neepa,
तस्य पुत्र-शतम् तु-अभूत्
his sons, one hundred indeed were
Ruchiraashva's son was Paara, Prithusena was his son. Paara's another son Neepa had a hundred sons indeed.
स कृत्व्यां शुककन्यायां ब्रह्मदत्तमजीजनत् ।
स योगी गवि भार्यायां विष्वक्सेनमधात् सुतम् ॥२५॥
स: कृत्व्याम् शुक-कन्यायाम्
he, in Kritvi, Shuka's daughter
ब्रह्मदत्तम्-अजीजनत्
Brahmadatta, gave birth to
स: योगी गवि भार्यायाम्
he, a Yogi, in Gau the wife
विष्वक्सेनम्-अधात् सुतम्
Vishvaksena begot as son
He, Neepa, from Shuka's daughter, Kritvi, gave birth to Brahmadatta, who was a Yogi, and he through his wife Gau, Sarasvati, begot a son Vishvaksena.
जैगीषव्योपदेशेन योगतन्त्रं चकार ह ।
उदक्स्वनस्ततस्तस्माद् भल्लादो बार्हदीषवा: ॥२६॥

योग-तन्त्रम् चकार ह
Yoga's study produced indeed
उदक्स्वन:-तत:-तस्मात्
Udaksvana, then, from him
भल्लाद: बार्हदीषवा:
Bhallaada, Brihadishu's descendents
By the instructions of Jaigeeshavya's, he produced a study of Yoga. Then from him Udaksvana, from him came Bhallaada, who were the descendents of Brihadishu.
यवीनरो द्विमीढस्य कृतिमांस्तत्सुत: स्मृत: ।
नाम्ना सत्यधृतिर्यस्य दृढनेमि: सुपार्श्वकृत् ॥२७॥
यवीनर: द्विमीढस्य
Yavaneera of Dvimeedha
कृतिमान्-तत्-सुत: स्मृत:
Kritimaan his son is known to be
नाम्ना सत्यधृति:-
by name Satyadhriti
यस्य दृढनेमि: सुपार्श्व-कृत्
whose Dridhnemee (who) Supaarshva (begot)
Dvimeedha's son was Yavaneera, his son is known to be Kritimaana, whose son is by the name of Satyadhriti, whose son is Dhridhnemee, who begot Supaarshva.
सुपार्श्वात् सुमतिस्तस्य पुत्र: सन्नतिमांस्तत: ।
कृतिर्हिरण्यनाभाद् यो योगं प्राप्य जगौ स्म षट् ॥२८॥
सुपार्श्वात् सुमति:-
from Supaarshva Sumati,
तस्य पुत्र: सन्नतिमान्-
his son Sannatimaan
तत: कृति:-हिरण्यनाभाद्
from him Kriti, from Hiranyagarbha
य: योगम् प्राप्य
who Yoga (instruction) attained
जगौ स्म षट
and taught the six (Samhitaa)
From Supaarshva, Sumati was born, his son was Sannatimaan, from him Kriti was born, who attained instruction of Yoga from Hiranyagarbha and taught them as the six Samhitaa.
संहिता: प्राच्यसाम्नां वै नीपो ह्युग्रायुधस्तत: ।
तस्य क्षेम्य: सुवीरोऽथ सुवीरस्य रिपुञ्जय: ॥२९॥
संहिता: प्राच्यसाम्नाम् वै
the Samhitaa known as Praachyasaamas, indeed
नीप: हि-उग्रायुध:-तत:
Neepa (his son), surely Ugraayudha from him
तस्य क्षेम्य: सुवीर:-अथ
his Kshemya, Suveera then,
सुवीरस्य रिपुञ्जय:
of Suveera Ripunjaya
Kriti made the sacred text, the Samhitaa known as Praachyasaamas. To be sure his son was Neepa, and from him surely Ugraayudha came, his son was Kshemya then from him Suveera and Suveera's son was Ripunjaya.
ततो बहुरथो नाम पुरमीढोऽप्रजोभवत् ।
नलिन्यामजमीढस्य नील: शान्ति: सुतस्तत: ॥३०॥

Purameedha issue-less was

Neela, Shaanti was son his
From Ripunjaya the son named Bahuratha was born. Purameedha was issue-less. From Ajameedha's wife Nalinee Neela was born, his son was Shaanti.
शान्ते: सुशान्तिस्तत्पुत्र: पुरुजोऽर्कस्ततोऽभवत् ।
भर्म्याश्वस्तनयस्तस्य पञ्चासन्मुद्गलादय: ॥३१॥
शान्ते: सुशान्ति:-तत्-पुत्र:
of Shaanti, Sushaanti, his son
पुरुज:-अर्क:-तत:-अभवत्
Puruja, Arka his son was,
भर्म्याश्व:-तनय:-तस्य
Bharmyashva son his
पञ्च-आसन्-मुद्गल-आदय:
five were Mudgala and others
Shaanti's son was Sushaanti, his son was Puruja, and his son was Arka, and his son Bhramyashva had five sons Mudgala and others.
यवीनरो बृहदिषु: काम्पिल्य: संजय: सुता: ।
भर्म्याश्व: प्राह पुत्रा मे पञ्चानां रक्षणाय हि ॥३२॥
यवीनर: बृहदिषु: काम्पिल्य:
Yaveenara, Brihadishu, Kaampilya,
संजय: सुता:
Sanjaya's sons
भर्म्याश्व: प्राह पुत्रा: मे
Bharmyashva said, 'sons mine
पञ्चानाम् रक्षणाय हि
of five lands to protect are enough'
Yaveenara, Brihadishu, Kaampilya, Sanjaya, were the sons. Bharmyashva said, 'My sons are competent enough for the protection of five lands.'
विषयाणामलमिमे इति पञ्चालसंज्ञिता: ।
मुद्गलाद् ब्रह्म निर्वृत्तं गोत्रं मौद्गल्यसंज्ञितम् ॥३३॥
विषयाणाम्-अलम्-इमे
for the lands enough these
इति पञ्चाल-संज्ञिता:
therefore Panchaala were named
मुद्गलात् ब्रह्म निर्वृत्तम् गोत्रम्
from Mudgala, of Braahmana extending a line
मौद्गल्य-संज्ञितम्
Maudgalya was named
Because the five were enough for the five lands, so they were named Paanchaalas. From Mudgala a line of Braahmanas extended, therefore they were named as Maudgalyas.
मिथुनं मुद्गलाद् भार्म्याद् दिवोदास: पुमानभूत् ।
अहल्या कन्यका यस्यां शतानन्दस्तु गौतमात् ॥३४॥
मिथुनम् मुद्गलात् भार्म्यात्
twins from Mudgala, from Bhraamyaadashva,
दिवोदास: पुमान्-अभूत्
Divodaasa the male was born
अहल्या कन्यका यस्याम्
Ahalya the girl from whom
शतानन्द:-तु गौतमात्
Shataananda, indeed from Gautama
From the Mudgala Bhraamyaadashva, twins were born. Of them, the male was Divodaasa and the girl was Ahalyaa. From her, and from her husband Gautama, Shataananda was born.
तस्य सत्यधृति: पुत्रो धनुर्वेदविशारद: ।
शरद्वांस्तत्सुतो यस्मादुर्वशीदर्शनात् किल ॥३५॥
तस्य सत्यधृति: पुत्र:
his Satyadhriti the son
धनुर्वेद-विशारद:
in archery an adept
शरद्वान्-तत्-सुत:
Sharadvaana was his son
यस्मात्-उर्वशी दर्शनात् किल
from whom by Urvashi's sight, it is said
His son Satyadhriti, was adept in archery, his son was Sharadvaana, from whom on the sight of Urvashi, it is said,…
शरस्तम्बेऽपतद् रेतो मिथुनं तदभूच्छुभम् ।
तद् दृष्ट्वा कृपयागृह्णाच्छन्तनुर्मृगयां चरन् ।
कृप: कुमार: कन्या च द्रोणपत्न्यभवत् कृपी ॥३६॥
शर:-तम्बे-अपतत् रेत:
on a reeds' cluster, fell the seed
मिथुनम् तत्-अभूत्-शुभम्
twins that became blessed
तद् दृष्ट्वा कृपया-अगृह्णात्-
that seeing, with compassion took
शन्तनु:-मृगयाम् चरन्
Shantanu, for hunting roaming
कृप: कुमार: कन्या च
Kripa was the boy, the girl and
द्रोण-पत्नी-अभवत् कृपी
Drona's wife became Kripi
The seed fell on a cluster of reeds, which became the blessed twins. As Shantanu was roaming for hunting, he saw them, and with compassion took them. The boy was named Kripa and the girl Kripi became the wife of Drona.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां नवमे स्कन्धे एकविंशोऽध्याय: ॥२१॥
Thus ends the twenty-first discourse in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
