Shree Shuka said -
मित्रेयुश्च दिवोदासाच्च्यवनस्तत्सुतो नृप ।
सुदास: सहदेवोऽथ सोमको जन्तुजन्मकृत् ॥१॥
मित्रेयु:-च दिवोदासात्-
Mitreyu and from Divodaasa
च्यवन:-तत्-सुत: नृप
Chyavana was his son, O King!
सुदास: सहदेव:-अथ
Sudaasa, Sahadeva, then
सोमक: जन्तु-जन्म-कृत्
Somaka, to Jantu the birth giver
O King! And from Divodaasa Mitreyu was born, his son was Chyavana, Sudaasa, Sahadeva, then Somaka, who was the birth giver of Jantu.
तस्य पुत्रशतं तेषां यवीयान् पृषत: सुत: ।
द्रुपदो द्रौपदी तस्य धृष्टद्युम्नादय: सुता: ॥२॥
तस्य पुत्र-शतम्
his sons were a hundred
तेषाम् यवीयान् पृषत: सुत:
of them the youngest from Prishata the son

Drupada, Draupadee his
धृष्टद्युम्न-आदय: सुता:
Dhristadyuman and others were the sons
Jantu had a hundred sons, of them the youngest son was Prishata, whose son was Drupada, his daughter was Draupadi and Dhristadyuman and other sons.
धृष्टद्युम्नाद् धृष्टकेतुर्भार्म्या: पञ्चालका इमे ।
योऽजीमीढसुतो ह्यन्य ऋक्ष: संवरणस्तत: ॥३॥

Riksha, Samvarana was from him
From Dhrishtadyumna, Dhrishtaketu was born, who was of the line of Bhaarmya, and they were called Panchaalakas. Ajeemedha's second son was Riksha, from him Samvarna was born.
तपत्यां सूर्यकन्यायां कुरुक्षेत्रपति: कुरु: ।
परीक्षित् सुधनुर्जह्नुर्निषधाश्व: कुरो: सुता: ॥४॥
तपत्याम् सूर्य-कन्यायाम्
from Tapati, Surya's daughter,
कुरुक्षेत्र-पति: कुरु:
Kurukshetra's lord Kuru (was born)
परीक्षित् सुधनु:-जह्नु:-
Pareekshita, Sudhanu, Jahnu,
निषधाश्व: कुरो: सुता:
Nishadhaashva (were) Kuru's sons
From Surya's daughter, Tapati, Kuru was born, who was the lord of Kurukshetra. Kuru's sons were Pareekshita, Sudhanu, Jahnu, Nishadhaashva.
सुहोत्रोऽभूत् सुधनुषश्च्यवनोऽथ तत: कृती ।
वसुस्तस्योपरिचरो बृहद्रथमुखास्तत: ॥५॥
सुहोत्र:-अभूत् सुधनुष:-
Suhotra was born of Sudhanusha,
च्यवन:-अथ तत: कृती
Chyavana then, from him Kriti
वसु:-तस्य-उपरिचर:
Vasu, his Uparichara
बृहद्रथ-मुखा:-तत:
Brihadratha sons from him
Suhotra was born of Sudhanusha, then Chyavana, from him Kriti, his son was Vasu Uparichara and from him the sons Brihadratha were born.
कुशाम्बमत्स्यप्रत्यग्रचेदिपाद्याश्च चेदिपा: ।
बृहद्रथात् कुशाग्रोऽभूदृषभस्तस्य तत्सुत: ॥६॥
कुशाम्ब-मत्स्य-प्रत्यग्र-
Kushaamba, Matsya, Pratyagra,
चेदिप-आद्या:-च चेदिपा:
Chedip, others and were kings of Chedi
बृहद्रथात् कुशाग्र:-अभूत्-
from Brihadratha Kushaagra was born,
ऋषभ:-तस्य तत्-सुत:
Rishabha his, the son

जज्ञे सत्यहितोऽपत्यं पुष्पवांस्तत्सुतो जहु: ।
अन्यस्यां चापि भार्यायां शकले द्वे बृहद्रथात् ॥७॥
जज्ञे सत्यहित:-अपत्यम्
was born to Satyahit the son
पुष्पवान्-तत्-सुत: जहु:
Pushpavaan, his son Jahu
अन्यस्याम् च-अपि भार्यायाम्
from another and also wife
शकले द्वे बृहद्रथात्
pieces two, through Brihadratha
Satyahit was born, his son was Pushpavaan, and his son was Jahu. Through Brihadratha, from another of his wife were born two halves of a human being.
ते मात्रा बहिरुत्सृष्टे जरया चाभिसन्धिते ।
जीव जीवेति कीडन्त्या जरासन्धोऽभवत् सुत: ॥८॥
ते मात्रा बहि:-उत्सृष्टे
they by the mother, outside thrown
जरया च-अभिसन्धिते
by Jaraa and joined
जीव जीव-इति कीडन्त्या
'live, live' thus, in play
जरासन्ध:-अभवत् सुत:
Jaraasandha became the son
They were thrown out by the mother. By the demoness Jaraa, they were joined in play, as she uttered, 'Live, live', he became the son Jaraasandha.
ततश्च सह्देवोऽभूत् सोमापिर्यच्छ्रुतश्रवा: ।
परीक्षिदनपत्योऽभूत् सुरथो नाम जाह्नव: ॥९॥
तत:-च सह्देव:-अभूत्
from him and Sahadeva was born
सोमापि:-यत्-श्रुतश्रवा:
Somaapi, then Shrutashravaa
परीक्षित्-अनपत्य:-अभूत्
Pareekshit was issue-less
सुरथ: नाम जाह्नव:
Suratha was the name of Jahu's son
From him Sahadeva was born, then from him Somaapi, then from him Shrutashravaa were born. Pareekshit was issue-less. Suratha was the name of Jahu's son.
ततो विदूरथस्तस्मात् सार्वभौमस्ततोऽभवत् ।
जयसेनस्तत्तनयॊ राधिकोऽतोऽयुतो ह्यभूत् ॥१०॥
तत: विदूरथ:-तस्मात्
from him Viduratha, from him
सार्वभौम:-तत:-अभवत्
Saarvabhauma, from him was born
जयसेन:-तत्-तनय:
Jayasena, his son
राधिक:-अत:-अयुत: हि-अभूत्
Raadhika, then, Ayuta indeed was born
From him Viduratha was born, and from him Saarvabhauma was born, from him was born Jayasena, his son was Raadhika, then, indeed from him Ayuta was born.
ततश्च क्रोधनस्तस्माद् देवातिथिरमुष्य च ।
ऋष्यस्तस्य दिलीपोऽभूत् प्रतीपस्तस्य चात्मज: ॥११॥
तत:-च क्रोधन:-तस्मात्
from him Krodhana, from him,
देवातिथि:-अमुष्य च
Devaatithi, his and
ऋष्य:-तस्य दिलीप:-अभूत्
Rishya, his Dileepa became (the son)
प्रतीप:-तस्य च-आत्मज:
Prateepa his and son
From him Krodhana was born, from him Devaatithi was born, and his son was Rishya, and Dileepa became his son, and his son was Prateepa.
देवापि: शन्तनुस्तस्य बाह्लीक इति चात्मजा: ।
पितृराज्यं परित्यज्य देवापिस्तु वनं गत: ॥१२॥
देवापि: शन्तनु:-तस्य
Devaapi, Shantanu, his
बाह्लीक इति च-आत्मजा:
Baahleeka thus and the sons
पितृ-राज्यम् परित्यज्य
father's kingdom renouncing
देवापि:-तु वनम् गत:
Devaapi indeed to the forest went
His sons were Devaapi, Shantanu and Baahleeka. Renouncing his father's kingdom Devaapi went away to the forest.
अभवच्छन्तनू राजा प्राङ्महाभिषसंज्ञित: ।
यं यं कराभ्यां स्पृशति जीर्णं यौवनमेति स: ॥१३॥
अभवत्-शन्तनू राजा
became Shantanu the king
प्राक्-महाभिष-संज्ञित:
formerly (in past life) Mahaabhisha named
यम् यम् कराभ्याम् स्पृशति
whom so ever, by both hands touched
जीर्णम् यौवनम्-एति स:
old aged, youth regained he
Shantanu then became the king, who was known by the name of Mahaabhisha in the previous birth. Whom-so ever old person he touched, with his hands, he would regain his youth.
शान्तिमाप्नोति चैवाग्र्यां कर्मणा तेन शन्तनु: ।
समा द्वादश तद्राज्ये न ववर्ष यदा विभु: ॥१४॥
शान्तिम्-आप्नोति च-एव-
relief achieves and also
अग्र्याम् कर्मणा तेन शन्तनु:
great, by act, by that Shantanu
समा: द्वादश तत्-राज्ये
years twelve, in his kingdom
न ववर्ष यदा विभु:
did not rain, when the mighty (Indra)
And they also attained great relief. By this act of his, he was called Shantanu. When for twelve years the mighty Indra did not rain in his kingdom,….
शन्तनुर्ब्राह्मणैरुक्त: परिवेत्तायमग्रभुक् ।
राज्यं देह्यग्रजायाशु पुरराष्ट्रविवृद्धये ॥१५॥
शन्तनु:-ब्राह्मणै:-उक्त:
Shantanu, by the Braahmanas was told
परिवेत्ता-अयम्-अग्रभुक्
ruling before the elder brother, this,
राज्यम् देहि-अग्रजाय-आशु
the kingdom give to the elder brother soon
पुर-राष्ट्र-विवृद्धये
for the city and the state's development
The Braahmanas told Shantanu, that it was because he was ruling the kingdom before his elder brother did, and also that he was married before his elder brother had married, and so he should soon give the kingdom to the elder brother for the prosperity of the state and the city.
एवमुक्तो द्विजैर्ज्येष्ठं छन्दयामास सोऽब्रवीत् ।
तन्मन्त्रिप्रहितैर्विप्रैर्वेदाद् विभ्रंशितो गिरा ॥१६॥
एवम्-उक्त: द्विजै:-ज्येष्ठम्
thus told by Braahmanas, elder brother
छन्दयामास स:-अब्रवीत्
was requested, he said
तत्-मन्त्रि-प्रहितै:-विप्रै:-
his ministers, sent by the Braahmanas
वेदात् विभ्रंशित: गिरा
from the Vedas with distorted speech
Thus told by the Braahmanas, Shantanu persuaded his elder brother. The Braahmanas sent by the minister, he was made to pronounce the Vedas in distorted speech.
वेदवादातिवादान् वै तदा देवो ववर्ष ह ।
देवापिर्योगमास्थाय कलापग्राममाश्रित: ॥१७॥
वेदवाद-अति- वादान् वै
the sayings of Veda are very misleading thus,
तदा देव: ववर्ष ह
then the gods rained indeed
देवापि:-योगम्-आस्थाय
Devaapi in Yoga committed,
कलापग्रामम्-आश्रित:
in Kalaapagraama lived
He said that the sayings of the Vedas were misleading, and then the rain gods rained, thinking him to be incapable of ruling. Devaapi also then committed himself to Yoga, and lived in Kalaapagraama.
सोमवंशे कलौ नष्टे कृतादौ स्थापयिश्यति ।
बाह्लीकात् सोमदत्तोऽभूद् भूरिर्भूरिश्रवास्तत: ॥१८॥
सोमवंशे कलौ नष्टे
in Somavansha, Kali when extinct (will be)
कृत-आदौ स्थापयिश्यति
in Krita's beginning, will re-establish it
बाह्लीकात् सोमदत्त:-अभूत्
from Baahleeka Somadutta was born
भूरि:-भूरिश्रवा:-तत:
from him, Bhoori and Bhoorishravaa
In Kaliyuga, when the lunar dynasty, Somavansha will be extinct, he will revive it again in the beginning of the Krita yuga. From Baahleeka, Somadutta was born, and from him were born Bhoori and Bhoorishravaa.
शलश्चशन्तनोरासीद् गङ्गायां भीष्म आत्मवान् ।
सर्वधर्मविदां श्रेष्ठो महाभागवत: कवि: ॥१९॥
शल:-च-शन्तनो:-आसीत्
Shala and of Shantanoo's was
गङ्गायम् भीष्म आत्मवान्
from Gangaa, Bheeshma the self-controlled
सर्व-धर्म-विदाम् श्रेष्ठ:
of all those who knew righteousness, the best
महाभागवत: कवि:
a great devotee and spiritually enlightened
And Shala was also Shantanoo's son. From Gangaa, Bheeshma was born, who was self controlled, was the best of those who knew righteousness, was a great devotee and was spiritually enlightened.
वीरयूथाग्रणीर्येन रामोऽपि युधि तोषित: ।
शन्तनोर्दाशकन्यायां जज्ञे चित्राङ्गद: सुत: ॥२०॥
वीर-यूथ-अग्रणी: येन
of the warriors troops the leader, by whom
राम:-अपि युधि तोषित:
(Parashu) Raama even in battle was pleased
शन्तनो:-दाश-कन्यायाम्
of Shantanu, from Daas's daughter
जज्ञे चित्राङ्गद: सुत:
was born Chitraangada the son
He was the leader of the troops of warriors, and even Parashuraama was pleased by him in the battle. From Daas's daughter, Satyavati, to Shantanu the son Chitraangada was born.
विचित्रवीर्यश्चावरजो नाम्ना चित्राङ्गदो हत: ।
यस्यां पराशरात् साक्षादवतीर्णो हरे: कला ॥२१॥
विचित्रवीर्य:-च-अवरज:
Vaichitravirya and younger brother,
नाम्ना चित्राङ्गद: हत:
by that name, Chitraangada was killed
यस्याम् पराशरात् साक्षात्-
from whom through Paraashara, in person,
अवतीर्ण: हरे: कला
descended of Lord Shree Hari a part
And his younger brother was Vaichitravirya. Chitraangada was killed by a Gandharva of the same name. From her (Satyavati only) through the sage Paraashara, a part incarnation of Lord Shree Hari, descended in person.
वेदगुप्तो मुनि: कृष्णो यतोऽहमिदमध्यगाम् ।
हित्वा स्वशिष्यान् पैलादीन् भगवान् बादरायण: ॥२२॥
वेदगुप्त: मुनि: कृष्ण:
the Vedas preserver, sage Krishna
यत:-अहम्-इदम्-अध्यगाम्
from whom I , this (Bhaagavata) studied
हित्वा स्व-शिष्यान् पैल-आदीन्
disregarding his own pupils, Paila and others
भगवान् बादरायण:
the divine Baadaraayana
He, the divine sage Krishna Baadaraayana, was the preserver of the Vedas, from whom I studied this Mahaa Bhaagavatam, Who taught it to me, disregarding his own pupils Paila and the others.
मह्यं पुत्राय शान्ताय परं गुह्यमिदं जगौ ।
विचित्रवीर्योऽथोवाह काशिराजसुते बलात् ॥२३॥
मह्यम् पुत्राय शान्ताय
to me, the son peaceful,
परम् गुह्यम्-इदम् जगौ
the highly secretive this taught
विचित्रवीर्य-अथ-उवाह
Vaichitravirya then married
काशि-राज-सुते बलात्
Kaashi king's two daughters forcefully
Lord Baadaraayana taught this highly secretive text to me, his peaceful son. Vichtraveerya, then forcefully married the two daughters of the king of Kaashi.
स्वयंवरादुपानीते अम्बिकाम्बालिके उभे ।
तयोरासक्तहृदयो गृहीतो यक्ष्मणा मृत: ॥२४॥
स्वयंवरात्-उपानीते
from Swayamvara abducted
अम्बिका-अम्बालिके उभे
Ambikaa and Ambaalikaa, both
तयो:-आसक्त हृदय:
in them very much attached at heart,
गृहीत: यक्ष्मणा मृत:
inflicted by phthisis, died
Both Ambikaa and Ambaalikaa were abducted from the ceremony of Swayambara. He was very much attached to them at heart. He was inflicted by phthisis, and died.
क्षेत्रेऽप्रजस्य वै भ्रातुर्मात्रोक्तो बादरायण: ।
धृतराष्ट्रं च पाण्डुं च विदुरं चाप्यजीजनत् ॥२५॥
क्षेत्रे-अप्रजस्य वै भ्रातु:-
the wife issueless indeed of the brother
मात्रा-उक्त: बादरायण:
by the mother's suggestion, Baadaraayana
धृतराष्ट्रम् च पाण्डुम् च
Dhritraashtra, and, Paandu and
विदुरम् च-अपि-अजीजनत्
Vidura and also begot
The brother's wife being issue-less, by the suggestion of the mother, Baadaraayana, begot Dhritraashtra, and Paandu and also Vidura.
गान्धार्यां धृतराष्ट्रस्य जज्ञे पुत्रशतं नृप ।
तत्र दुर्योधनो ज्येष्ठो दु:शला चापि कन्यका ॥२६॥
गान्धार्याम् धृतराष्ट्रस्य
from Gaandhaari of Dhritaraashtra
जज्ञे पुत्र-शतम् नृप
were born sons a hundred, O King!
तत्र दुर्योधन: ज्येष्ठ:
there Duryodhana the eldest
दु:शला च-अपि कन्यका
Duhshalaa and also the daughter
A hundred sons were born to Dhritaraashtra from Gaandhaari, there, Duryodhana was the eldest, O King! There was also a daughter Dushalaa.
शापान्मैथुनरुद्धस्य पाण्डो: कुन्त्यां महारथा: ।
जाता धर्मानिलेन्द्रेभ्यो युधिष्ठिरमुखास्त्रय: ॥२७॥
शापात्-मैथुन रुद्धस्य
due to curse copulation denied
पाण्डो: कुन्त्याम् महारथा:
Paandu, from Kunti, great charioteers
जाता: धर्म-अनिल-इन्द्रेभ्य:
were born, from Dharm, Anila, Indra
युधिष्ठिर-मुखा:-त्रय:
Yudhishthira and the others, three
Paandu who was denied copulation due to a curse, from his wife Kunti were born three great charioteers, Yudhishthira and others the three through Dharma, Anila and Indra.
नकुल: सह्देवश्च माद्र्यां नासत्यदस्रयो: ।
द्रौपद्यां पञ्च पञ्चभ्य: पुत्रास्ते पितरोऽभवन् ॥२८॥
नकुल: सह्देव:-च
Nakula Sahadeva and
माद्र्याम् नासत्य-दस्रयो:
in Maadree, from Naastya Dasra (two Ashvinikumaaras)
द्रौपद्याम् पञ्च पञ्चभ्य:
in Draupadee five from the five
पुत्रा:-ते पितर:-अभवन्
sons they, uncles (your's) were born
In Maadree, Nakula and Sahadeva, from the two Ashvini kumaaras, Naastya and Dasra, were born. In Draupadi from the five Paandavas, five sons were born who were your uncles.
युधिष्ठिरात् प्रतिविन्ध्य: श्रुतसेनोवृकोदरात् ।
अर्जुनाच्छ्रुतकीर्तिस्तु शतानीकस्तु नाकुलि: ॥२९॥
युधिष्ठिरात् प्रतिविन्ध्य:
from Yudhishthira, Prativindhya
श्रुतसेन:-वृकोदरात्
Shrutasena from Bheema,
अर्जुनात्-श्रुतकीर्ति:-तु
from Arjuna Shrutakeerti indeed,
शतानीक:-तु नाकुलि:
Shataaneeka indeed Nakula's son
From Yudhishthira Prativindhya was born, Shrutasena was born from Bheema, and from Arjuna Shrutakeerti indeed was born, and Nakula's son, indeed was Shataaneeka.
सहदेवसुतो राजञ्छ्रुतकर्मा तथापरे ।
युधिष्ठिरात् तु पौरव्यां देवकोऽथ घटोत्कच: ॥३०॥
सहदेव-सुत: राजन्-
Sahadeva's son, O King!
श्रुतकर्मा तथा-अपरे
was Shrutakarmaa and others
युधिष्ठिरात् तु पौरव्याम्
from Yudhishthira indeed in Pauravi
देवक:-अथ घटोत्कच:
Devaka, then Ghatotkacha
O King! Sahadeva's son was Shrutakarmaa and others, indeed in Pauravi, from Yudhishthira Devaka was born, and then, from Bheema Ghatotkacha was born.
भीमसेनाद् हिडिम्बायां काल्यां सर्वगतस्तत: ।
सहदेवात् सुहोत्रं तु विजयासूत पार्वती ॥३१॥
भीमसेनात् हिडिम्बायाम्
from Bheemasena in Hidimbaa
काल्याम् सर्वगत:-
in Kaalee, Sarvagata
तत: सहदेवात् सुहोत्रम् तु
then from Sahadeva, Suhotra indeed
विजया-असूत पार्वती
Vijayaa gave birth to, the mountain's daughter
(Ghatotkacha) from Bheemsena in Hidimbaa, in Kaalee Sarvagata was born, and then from Sahadeva, in the mountain's daughter Vijayaa Suhotra was born.
करेणुमत्यां नकुलो निरमित्रं तथार्जुन: ।
इरावन्तमुलूप्यां वै सुतायां बभ्रुवाहनम् ।
मणिपूरपते: सोऽपि तत्पुत्र: पुत्रिकासुत: ॥३२॥
करेणुमत्याम् नकुल:
in Karenumatee,
निरमित्रम् तथा-अर्जुन:
(son) Niramitra and Arjuna
इरावन्तम्-उलूप्याम् वै
Iraavanta in Uloopee, indeed
सुतायाम् बभ्रुवाहनम्
in the daughter, Babhruvaahana
मणिपूरपते: स:-अपि
of Manipur's lord, he also
तत्-पुत्र: पुत्रिका-सुत:
his son, daughter's son
In Karenumatee Nakula's son Niramitra was born, and in Uloopee Arjuna's son Iraavanta was born. In Manipur's Lord's daughter, Arjuna's son Babhruvaahana was born, he was the daughter's son but also his son.
तव तात: सुभद्रायामभिमन्युरजायत ।
सर्वातिरथजिद् वीर उत्तरायां ततो भवान् ॥३३॥
तव तात: सुभद्रायाम्-
your father, in Subhadraa
अभिमन्यु:-अजायत
Abhimanyu gave birth to
सर्व-अतिरथ-जित् वीर
all the great charioteers' winner, the hero
उत्तरायाम् तत: भवान्
in Uttaraa then, you
Your father Abhimanyu, the hero, was born in Subhadraa who was the winner of all great charioteers. Then, in Uttaraa you were born.
परिक्षीणेषु कुरुषु द्रौणेर्ब्रह्मास्त्रतेजसा ।
त्वं च कृष्णानुभावेन सजीवो मोचितोऽन्तकात् ॥३४॥
परिक्षीणेषु कुरुषु द्रौणे:-
when perished the Kurus by Drona's
ब्रह्म-अस्त्र-तेजसा
son's Brahma's missile's blaze,
त्वम् च कृष्ण-अनुभावेन
you and by Krishna's might
सजीव: मोचित:-अन्तकात्
alive rescued from death
After all the Kurus had perished, Drona's son Ashwatthaamaa, released the missile of Brahmaa, from the blaze of which you were rescued alive from death, by Krishna's might.
तवेमे तनयास्तात जनमेजयपूर्वका: ।
श्रुतसेनो भीमसेन उग्रसेनश्च वीर्यवान् ॥३५॥
तव-इमे तनया:-तात
your these sons, O Dear One!
जनमेजय-पूर्वका:
Janamejaya following
श्रुतसेन: भीमसेन:
Shrutasena Bheemsena
उग्रसेन:-च वीर्यवान्
Ugrasena and all very brave
O Dear One! These are your sons, Janamejaya the eldest, following him, Shrutasena Bheemsena and Ugrasena, all of them are very brave.
जन्मेजयस्त्वां विदित्वा तक्षकान्निधनं गतम् ।
सर्पान् वै सर्पयागाग्नौ स होष्यति रुषान्वित: ॥३६॥
जन्मेजय:-त्वाम् विदित्वा
Janamejaya, you knowing
तक्षकात्-निधनम् गतम्
from Takshaka destined
सर्पान् वै सर्प-याग-अग्नौ
the snakes indeed, in the snake sacrifice fire
स: होष्यति रुषा-अन्वित:
he will offer as oblation, by rage overcome
Janamejaya, coming to know that your death is destined through the snake Takshaka, overcome by rage, will offer the snakes as oblation in the fire of the snake sacrifice.
कावषेयं पुरोधाय तुरं तुरगमेधयाट् ।
समन्तात् पृथिवीं सर्वां जित्वा यक्ष्यति चाध्वरै: ॥३७॥
कावषेयम् पुरोधाय तुरम्
Kavasha's son, appointing as priest
तुरम् तुरग-मेधयाट्
Tura, horse sacrifices performing
समन्तात् पृथिवीम् सर्वाम्
from all about the globe, the whole
जित्वा यक्ष्यति च-अध्वरै:
winning, will conduct sacrifices and by sacrifices
Kavasha's son, will appoint Tura as the priest, and having conquered the whole globe from all over, will perform a number of horse sacrifices, and will propitiate the Lord by the sacrifices.
तस्य पुत्र: शतानीको याज्ञवल्क्यात् त्रयीं पठन् ।
अस्त्रज्ञानं क्रियाज्ञानं शौनकात् परमेष्यति ॥३८॥
तस्य पुत्र: शतानीक:
his son, Shataaneeka
याज्ञवल्क्यात् त्रयीम् पठन्
from Yaagyavalkya three Vedas will study
अस्त्र-ज्ञानम् क्रिया-ज्ञानम्
the missiles' knowledge and Self knowledge
शौनकात् परम-एष्यति
from Shaunaka the Ultimate will attain
His son Shataaneeka will study the three Vedas from Yaagyavalkya and the knowledge of the missiles and the knowledge of the Self from Shaunaka and will attain the Ultimate Truth .
सहस्रानीकस्तत्पुत्रस्ततस्चैवाश्वमेधज: ।
असीमकृष्णस्तस्यापि नेमिचक्रस्तु तत्सुत: ॥३९॥
सहस्रानीक:-तत्-पुत्र:-तत:
Sahasraaneeka will be his son, from him
च-एव-अश्वमेधज:
and also Ashvamedhaja
असीमकृष्ण:-तस्य-अपि
Aseemakrishna will be his also
नेमिचक्र:-तु तत्-सुत:
Nemichakra was indeed his son
Shataaneeka's son will be Sahasraneeka, and from him also will be Ashvamedhaja, and his son will also be Aseemakrishna, and Nemichakra will indeed be his son.
गजाह्वये हृते नद्या कौशाम्ब्यां साधु वत्स्यति ।
उक्तस्ततश्चित्ररथस्तस्मात् कविरथ: सुत: ॥४०॥
गजाह्वये हृते नद्या
Hastinaapura being washed away by river (Ganga),
कौशाम्ब्याम् साधु वत्स्यति
in Kaushaambi, well will live
उक्त:-तत:-चित्ररथ:-
is said to be from him Chitraratha,
तस्मात् कविरथ: सुत:
from him Kaviratha the son
When Hastinaapura will be washed away by the river Ganga, he will settle down well in Kaushaambi. It is said that from him Chitraratha will be born, and his son will be Kaviratha.
तस्माच्च वृष्टिमांस्तस्य सुषेणोऽथ महीपति: ।
सुनीथस्तस्य भविता नृचक्षुर्यत् सुखीनल: ॥४१॥
तस्मात्-च वृष्टिमान्-
from him and Vrishteemaan
तस्य सुषेण:-अथ महीपति:
his Sushena, then Maheepati,
सुनीथ:-तस्य भविता
Sunitha his, will be
नृचक्षु:-यत् सुखीनल:
Nrichakshu, whose (will be) Sukheenala
And from him will be Vrishteemaan, his son will be Sushena, and then, Maheepati, his son will be Sunitha, and his son will be Nrichakshu, whose son will be Sukheenala.
परिप्लव: सुतस्तस्मान्मेधावी सुनयात्मज: ।
नृपञ्जयस्ततो दूर्वस्तिमिस्तस्माज्जनिष्यति ॥४२॥
परिप्लव: सुत:-तस्मात्-
(his) Pariplava the son, from him
मेधावी सुनय-आत्मज:
Medhaavee, Sunaya's son,
नृपञ्जय:-तत: दूर्व:-
Nripanjaya, from him Doorva,
तिमि:-तस्मात्-जनिष्यति
Timi from him will be born
His son Pariplava, from him Sunaya, whose son will be Medhaavee, his son will be Nripanjaya, from him will be born Doorva, and from him Timi will be born.
तिमेर्बृहद्रथस्तस्माच्छतानीक: सुदासज: ।
शतानीकाद् दुर्दमनस्तस्यापत्यं वहीनर: ॥४३॥

of Timi, Brihadratha, from him,
शतानीक: सुदास-ज:
Shataaneeka, Sudaasa's son
शतानीकाद् दुर्दमन:-
from Shataaneeka Durdamana,
तस्य-अपत्यम् वहीनर:
his son Vaheenara
Timi's son will be Brihadratha, from whose son Sudaasa, Shataaneeka will be born, from Shataaneeka, Durdamana and his son will be Vaheenara.
दण्डपाणिर्निमिस्तस्य क्षेमको भविता नृप: ।
ब्रह्मक्षत्रस्य वै प्रोक्तो वंशो देवर्षिसत्कृत: ॥४४॥
दण्डपाणि:-निमि:-तस्य
(his son) Dandapaani, (then) Nimi, his
क्षेमक: भविता नृप:
(son) Kshemaka will be the king
ब्रह्म-क्षत्रस्य वै प्रोक्त:
of Braahmanas and Kshatriyas' indeed, have told
वंश: देवर्षि-सत्कृत:
of the race, by the gods esteemed
His son will be Dandapaani, and his will be Nimi, and his son will be Kshema, who will be the king. I have told to you of the races of the Braahmanas and the Kshatriyas, which are esteemed even by the gods.
क्षेमकं प्राप्य राजानं संस्थां प्राप्स्यति वै कलौ ।
अथ मागधराजानो भवितारो वदामि ते ॥४५॥
क्षेमकम् प्राप्य राजानम्
Kshemaka reaching to, of the kings
संस्थाम् प्राप्स्यति वै कलौ
end will come to indeed in Kali,
अथ मागध-राजान:
now of the Magadha kings
भवितार: वदामि ते
to come, will enumerate for you
Reaching up to Kshemaka, this race of the kings will come to an end in Kaliyuga. Now I will enumerate for you the kings to come in the race of the Magadhas.
भविता सहदेवस्य मार्जारिर्यच्छ्रुतश्रवा: ।
ततोऽयुतायुस्तस्यापि निरमित्रोऽथ तत्सुत: ॥४६॥

Maarjaari, from whom Shrutashravaa

Niramitra, then, that his son
The son of Sahadeva will be Maarjaari, from whom Shrutashrava will be born, from him will be Ayutaayu, and then his son will also be Niramitra.
सुनक्षत्र: सुनक्षत्राद् बृहत्सेनोऽथ कर्मजित् ।
तत: सृतञ्जयाद् विप्र: शुचिस्तस्य भविष्यति ॥४७॥
सुनक्षत्र: सुनक्षत्रात्
Sunakshatra, from Sunakshatra
बृहत्सेन: अथ कर्मजित्
Brihatsena, then, Karmajit
तत: सृतञ्जयात् विप्र:
after that, Sritanjaya, from him Vipra
शुचि:-तस्य भविष्यति
Shuchi his will be
Niramitra's son will be Sunakshatra, from Sunakshatra will be Brihatsena, then Karmajit, after that, Sritanjaya and from him Vipraa will be born, Shuchi will be his son.
क्षेमोऽथ सुव्रतस्तस्माद् धर्मसूत्र: शमस्तत: ।
द्युमत्सेनोऽथ सुमति: सुबलो जनिता तत: ॥४८॥
क्षेम:-अथ सुव्रत:-तस्मात्
Kshema, after that Suvrata, from him
धर्मसूत्र: शम:-तत:
Dharmasootra, Shama from him,
द्युमत्सेन:-अथ सुमति:
Dyumatsena after that Sumati,
सुबल: जनिता तत:
Subala will be born from him
His son will be Kshema, after that Suvrata, from him Dharmasootra will be born, and from him, Shama, after that Dyumatsena, and after that Sumati and from him Subala will be born.
सुनीथ: सत्यजिदथ विश्वजिद् यद् रिपुञ्जय: ।
बार्हद्रथाश्च भूपाला भाव्या: साहस्रवत्सरम् ॥४९॥
सुनीथ: सत्यजित्-अथ
(then) Suneetha, Satyajit
विश्वजित् यत् रिपुञ्जय:
then Vishvajit, from whom Ripunjaya
बार्हद्रथा:-च भूपाला:
Brihadratha and the kings
भाव्या: साहस्र वत्सरम्
will be in a thousand years
Then will come Suneetha, his son, will be Satyajit, then Vishvajit, from whom Ripunjaya will be born. The line of kings from Brihadratha will be for a thousand years.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां नवमे स्कन्धे द्वाविंशोऽध्याय: ॥२२॥
Thus ends the twenty-second discourse in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
