श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्थं भगवतो गोप्य: श्रुत्वा वाच: सुपेशला: ।

जहुर्विरहजं तापं तदङ्गोपचिताशिष: ॥१॥


इत्थम् भगवत: गोप्य:
thus, of The Lord, the Gopis
श्रुत्वा वाच: सुपेशला:
hearing, the words bewitching,
जहु:-विरह-जम् तापम्
cast of the separation born agony
तत्-अङ्ग-उपचिता-आशिष:
by His body fulfilled desires

Thus, hearing the bewitching words of The Lord, the Gopis cast off their agony caused by their separation from Him, as their desires had been fulfilled by His physical presence.


तत्रारभत गोविन्दो रासक्रीडामनुव्रतै: ।

स्त्रीरत्नैरन्वित: प्रीतैरन्योन्याबद्धबाहुभि: ॥२॥


तत्र-आरभत गोविन्द:
there commenced, Lord Govinda
रास-क्रीडाम्-अनुव्रतै:
the Raasa-dance sport, with the devoted
स्त्री-रत्नै:-अन्वित: प्रीतै:-
women jewels, together with the affectionate,
अन्योन्य-आबद्ध-बाहुभि:
each other entwined with their arms

The Lord Govinda, commenced the sport of the Raasa dance along with His devoted and affectionate jewels of women, who stood there with their arms entwined with each other's.


रासोत्सव: सम्प्रवृत्तो गोपीमण्डलमण्डित: ।

योगेश्वरेण कृष्णेन तासां मध्ये द्वयोर्द्वयो: ।

प्रविष्टेन गृहीतानां कण्ठे स्वनिकटं स्त्रिय: ॥३॥


रास-उत्सव: सम्प्रवृत्त:
the Raasa festival started
गोपी-मण्डल-मण्डित:
by the Gopi's group adorned
योगेश्वरेण कृष्णेन
by The Yoga Master Krishna
तासाम् मध्ये द्वयो:-द्वयो:
in their in between two of them
प्रविष्टेन गृहीतानाम्
introducing (Himself) holding
कण्ठे स्व-निकटम् स्त्रिय:
the necks, near own self the women imagined

The festival of the Raasa dance started, adorned by the groups of the Gopis. The Master of Yoga, Krishna, introduced Himself in between two of them, and they imagined Him to be with their own selves.


यं मन्येरन् नभस्तावद् विमानशतसङ्कुलम् ।

दिवौकसां सदाराणामौत्सुक्यापहृतात्मनाम् ॥४॥


यम् मन्येरन् नभ:तावत्
Whom thinking to be, the sky meanwhile,
विमान-शत-सङ्कुलम्
with Ariel cars hundreds gathered
दिवौकसाम् स-दाराणाम्-
of the divine beings with their wives
औत्सुक्य-अपहृत-आत्मनाम्
with curiosity lost themselves

Whom thinking to be. Meanwhile the sky was thronged by hundreds of Ariel cars , of the divine beings who came there with their wives having lost their minds for curiosity.


ततो दुन्दुभयो नेदुर्निपेतु: पुष्पवृष्टय: ।

जगुर्गन्धर्वपतय: सस्त्रीकास्तद्यशोऽमलम् ॥५॥


तत: दुन्दुभय: नेदु:-
then clarions were sounded
निपेतु: पुष्प-वृष्टय:
showered flower rains
जगु:-गन्धर्व-पतय: स-स्त्रीका:-
sang the Gandharva chiefs with their wives
तत्-यश:-अमलम्
His glory immaculate

Then, the clarions were sounded, and rains of flowers were showered and the chiefs of the Gandharvas with their wives sang of His immaculate glories.


वलयानां नूपुराणां किङ्किणीनां च योषिताम् ।

सप्रियाणामभूच्छब्दस्तुमुलो रासमण्डले ॥६॥


वलयानाम् नूपुराणाम्
of the bangles, anklets,
किङ्किणीनाम् च योषिताम्
girdle's tiny bells' and of the women
सप्रियाणाम्-अभूत्-शब्द:-
along with that of their Beloved, there arose din
तुमुल: रास-मण्डले
loud in the Raasa (dancers') ring

In the ring of the Raasa dancers, there arose aloud din from the tinkling of the bangles, anklets and the tiny bells of the girdles of the women and also those of The Beloved Lord.


तत्रातिशुशुभे ताभिर्भगवान् देवकीसुत: ।

मध्ये मणीनां हैमानां महामरकतो यथा ॥७॥


तत्र-अति-शुशुभे ताभि:-
there, was very much brightened with them,
भगवान् देवकी-सुत:
The Lord Devaki's son
मध्ये मणीनाम् हैमानाम्
in the midst of the gems and gold
महा-मरकत: यथा
the great emerald just as

There, with the Gopis, The Lord, the son of Devaki, shone all the more brightly, like a great emerald shines in the midst of gems and gold.


पादन्यासैर्भुजविधुतिभि: सस्मितैर्भ्रूविलासै

र्भज्यन्मध्यैश्चलकुचपटै: कुण्डलैर्गण्डलोलै: ।

स्विद्यन्मुख्य: कबररशनाग्रन्थय: कृष्णवध्वो

गायन्त्यस्तं तडित इव ता मेघचक्रे विरेजु: ॥८॥


पाद-न्यासै:-भुज-विधुतिभि:
with foot steps, arms swinging,
सस्मितै:-भ्रू-विलासै:-
smiling, eyebrows playful,
भज्यत्-मध्यै:-चल-कुच-पटै:
bending waists, breasts shaking the upper garments
कुण्डलै:-गण्ड-लोलै:
by the earrings on the quivering ear lobes
स्विद्यत्-मुख्य: कबर-रशना-
perspiring faces, hair braids
ग्रन्थय: कृष्ण-वध्व:
loosened of Krishna's darlings
गायन्त्य:-तम् तडित: इव
singing His praises, lightening like
ता: मेघ-चक्रे विरेजु:
they in a cloud's mass shone

They, Krishna's darlings, with their measured foot steps, swinging arms, with the breasts, the upper garments flowing away, the ear-rings quivering on the ear lobes, perspiring faces, the hair braids loosened by their motion, sang His praises and shone like lightening in the midst of a mass of cloud.


उच्चैर्जगुर्नृत्यमाना रक्तकण्ठ्यो रतिप्रिया: ।

कृष्णाभिमर्शमुदिता यद्गीतेनेदमावृतम् ॥९॥


उच्चै:-जगु:-नृत्यमाना:
loudly sang, while dancing
रक्त-कण्ठ्य: रति-प्रिया:
love sweetened voiced, the love lorn lovers,
कृष्ण-अभिमर्श-मुदिता:
Krishna's touch delighted by
यत्-गीतेन-इदम्-आवृतम्
by which music this universe is full of

The love lorn Gopis, delighted by the touch of Krishna, sang loudly in a voice sweetened with love, as they danced. Their music filling this universe.


काचित् समं मुकुन्देन स्वरजातीरमिश्रिता: ।

उन्निन्ये पूजिता तेन प्रीयता साधु साध्विति ।

तदेव ध्रुवमुन्निन्ये तस्यै मानं च बह्वदात् ॥१०॥


काचित् समम् मुकुन्देन
one of them with Mukunda, (Krishna),
स्वर-जाती:-अमिश्रिता:
voice and notes not matching, (different),
उन्निन्ये पूजिता तेन
sang, applauded by Him
प्रीयता साधु साधु-इति
delighted, 'Well done! Well done' thus
तत्-एव ध्रुवम्-उन्निन्ये
that (tune) only in Dhrupad a (notes) performed,
तस्यै मानं च बहु-अदात्
(another) to her honour and much gave

As they sang and danced, with Mukunda, one of the Gopis sang in a different tune and note, than Krishna. Krishna was delighted and applauded, 'Well done! Well done!' thus. Another one sang the same tune in another notes of Dhrupad a, and was given much honour by Him.


काचिद् रासपरिश्रान्ता पार्श्वस्थस्य गदाभृत: ।

जग्राह बाहुना स्कन्धं श्लथद्वलयमल्लिका ॥११॥


काचिद् रास-परिश्रान्ता
another one, by the Raasa well tired,
पार्श्वस्थस्य गदाभृत:
near by standing Vishnu's (Krishna's)
जग्राह बाहुना स्कन्धम्
caught hold of by the arm the shoulder,
श्लथत्-वलय-मल्लिका
slipping away the bangles and jasmine flowers

One of them was fully tired by the Raasa dance. She caught hold of the shoulder of Shri Vishnu, Krishna, standing near by, by her arm, with her bangles slipping out of the wrists and the jasmine flowers slipping out of the braids.


तत्रैकांसगतं बाहुं कृष्णस्योत्पलसौरभम् ।

चन्दनालिप्तमाघ्राय हृष्टरोमा चुचुम्ब ह ॥१२॥


तत्र-एका-अंस-गतम् बाहुम्
there, one (Gopi), on the shoulder, the arm
कृष्णस्य-उत्पल-सौरभम्
of Krishna, lotus scented
चन्दन-आलिप्तम्-आघ्राय
sandal paste smeared smelling,
हृष्ट-रोमा चुचुम्ब ह
horripilated, kissed (it) indeed

One of the Gopis on whose shoulder was placed Krishna's arm, smelled that arm which had the scent of the lotus and was smeared with sandal paste, and was horripilated, and indeed kissed it.


कस्याश्चिन्नाट्यविक्षिप्तकुण्डलत्विषमण्डितम् ।

गण्डं गण्डे सन्दधत्या अदात्ताम्बूलचर्वितम् ॥१३॥


कस्या:-चित्-नाट्य-विक्षिप्त
to some another one, by dance dangling
कुण्डल-त्विष-मण्डितम्
ear-ring lustre lit up
गण्डम् गण्डे सन्दधत्या
cheek, on (His) cheek placing near,
अदात्-ताम्बूल चर्वितम्
gave betel chewed

To some another one, with a dangling earring because of the dance, who had placed her own cheek which shone by the lustre of that earring, near His cheek, He gave her the betel chewed by Him.


नृत्यन्ती गायती काचित् कूजन्नूपुरमेखला ।

पार्श्वस्थाच्युतहस्ताब्जं श्रान्ताधात् स्तनयो: शिवम् ॥१४॥


नृत्यन्ती गायती काचित्
dancing, singing, of some (Gopi)
कूजत्-नूपुर-मेखला
echoed the anklets and girdle
पार्श्वस्थ-अच्युत-हस्त-अब्जम्
on the near standing, Immortal Lord's hand lotus
श्रान्ता-अधात् स्तनयो: शिवम्
exhausted, (she) placed on bosom auspicious

One of the Gopis who was singing and dancing as her anklets and girdle echoed , was exhausted, and pressed The immortal Lord's soothing lotus hand on her bosom.


गोप्यो लब्ध्वाच्युतं कान्तं श्रिय एकान्तवल्लभम् ।

गृहीतकण्ठ्यस्तदोर्भ्यां गायन्त्यस्तं विजह्रिरे ॥१५॥


गोप्य: लब्ध्वा-अच्युतम्
the Gopis, securing The Immortal Lord
कान्तम् श्रिय: एकान्त-वल्लभम्
as (their) Beloved, of Laxmi the One Beloved,
गृहीत-कण्ठ्य:-तत्-दोर्भ्याम्
holding necks, by His two arms (encircled)
गायन्त्य:-तम् विजह्रिरे
sang of Him, and sported

The Gopis having secured The Immortal Lord as their Beloved, Who is The One Beloved of the goddess of beauty and prosperity, sang of Him and sported, even as He encircled their necks with His two arms.


कर्णोत्पलालकविटङ्ककपोलघर्मवक्त्रश्रियो वलयनूपुरघोषवाद्यै: ।

गोप्य: समं भगवता ननृतु: स्वकेशस्रस्तस्रजो भ्रमरगायकरासगोष्ठ्याम् ॥१६॥


कर्ण-उत्पल-अलक विटङ्क-
in the ears, lotus, curly locks adorning
कपोल घर्म-वक्त्र-श्रिय:
the cheeks, sweat drops, the face of beauty
वलय-नूपुर-घोष-वाद्यै:
bangles, anklets, tinkling, musical instruments playing
गोप्य: समम् भगवता ननृतु:
the Gopis with The Lord danced
स्व-केश-स्रस्त-स्रज:
from their hair dislodged garlands
भ्रमर-गायक-रास-गोष्ठ्याम्
bumblebees the singers, in the Raasa dance assembly

The beauty of their faces was enhanced by the lotus hung in the ears, the cheeks adorned by their curly locks, sweat drops shining on the forehead. The Lord danced with the Gopis, the tinkling of their bangles and anklets creating instrumental music. The flower garlands were dislodged from their hair, and the bumble bees hovering on them, sang in the assembly of the Raasa dance.


एवं परिष्वङ्गकराभिमर्शस्निग्धेक्षणोद्दामविलासहासै: ।

रेमे रमेशो व्रजसुन्दरीभिर्यथार्भक: स्वप्रतिबिम्बविभ्रम: ॥१७॥


एवम् परिष्वङ्ग-कर-अभिमर्श-
in this manner, embracing, by hand touching,
स्निग्ध-ईक्षण-उद्दाम
loving glances, unrestricted
विलास-हासै:
amorous advances (and) laughter
रेमे रमेश: व्रज-सुन्दरीभि:-
sported Ramesha, with Vraja's beauties
यथा-अर्भक: स्व-
just like a child, with his own
प्रतिबिम्ब-विभ्रम:
reflections, deluded

In this manner, Krishna (Vishnu), consort of Ramaa, sported with the beauties of Vraja, embracing them, touching them with the hand, casting loving glances at them, making unrestricted amorous advances and laughing heartily, just as a deluded child would play with his own reflection in the mirror.


तदङ्गसङ्गप्रमुदाकुलेन्द्रिया: केशान् दुकूलं कुचपट्टिकां वा ।

नाञ्ज: प्रतिव्योढुमलं व्रजस्त्रियो विस्रस्तमालाभरणा: कुरूद्वह ॥१८॥


तत्-अङ्ग-सङ्ग-प्रमुदा-
by His physical contact overjoyed,
आकुल-इन्द्रिया: केशान् दुकूलम्
with overwhelmed senses, the hair, scarf,
कुच-पट्टिकाम् वा
brassier or,
ना-अञ्ज: प्रतिव्योढुम्-
not a bit to carry were able
अलम् व्रज-स्त्रिय: विस्रस्त-
at all, the Vraja women, dislodged
माला-आभरणा: कुरूद्वह
garlands, ornaments, O Scion of Kuru's!

O Scion of Kuru's! by His physical contact, they, the Vraja women, were overjoyed, with their senses overwhelmed, they were unable to carry even slightly, their hair, scarves or brassieres, and their garlands and ornaments were dislodged.


कृष्णविक्रीडितं वीक्ष्य मुमुहु: खेचरस्त्रिय: ।

कामार्दिता: शशाङ्कश्च सगणो विस्मितोऽभवत् ॥१९॥


कृष्ण-विक्रीडितम् वीक्ष्य
Krishna's amorous sport witnessing,
मुमुहु: खेचर-स्त्रिय:
were intoxicated the celestial ladies
काम-अर्दिता: शशाङ्क:-च
the love stricken, the Moon and
सगण: विस्मित:-अभवत्
with his retinue was wonderstruck

The celestial ladies were intoxicated and love stricken, as they witnessed the amorous sport of Krishna, and the Moon along with his retinue was wonder-struck.


कृत्वातावन्तमात्मानं यावतीर्गोपयोषित: ।

रेमे स भगवांस्ताभिरात्मारामोऽपि लीलया ॥२०॥


कृत्वा-तावन्तम्-आत्मानम्
making as many Himself,
यावती:-गोप-योषित:
as were the Cowherd women,
रेमे स भगवान्-ताभि:-
sported He, The Lord with them
आत्माराम:-अपि लीलया
The Self-revelling, though, sportingly

He, The Lord made Himself into as many forms as were the cowherd women, and sported with them, sportingly, though He Himself is Self-revelling.


तासामतिविहारेण श्रान्तानां वदनानि स: ।

प्रामृजत् करुण: प्रेम्णा शन्तमेनाङ्गपाणिना ॥२१॥


तासाम्-अति-विहारेण
their, by much dancing
श्रान्तानाम् वदनानि स:
of the fatigued, the faces, He
प्रामृजत् करुण: प्रेम्णा
wiped, The Compassionate lovingly,
शन्तमेन-अङ्ग-पाणिना
with blissful, O Dear! Hand

O Dear! The Compassionate Lord lovingly wiped with His blissful hand, the faces of the Gopis who were fatigued by much dancing.


गोप्य: स्फुरत्पुरटकुण्डलकुन्तलत्विड्गण्डश्रिया सुधितहासनिरीक्षणेन ।

मानं दधत्य ऋषभस्य जगु: कृतानि पुण्यानि तत्कररुहस्पर्शप्रमोदा: ॥२२॥


गोप्य: स्फुरत्-पुरट-कुण्डल
the Gopis, with shining golden earrings
कुन्तल-त्विड्-गण्ड-श्रिया
curly locks' lustre the cheeks beauty
सुधित-हास-निरीक्षणेन
nectar like laughter and glances,
मानम् दध्यत्य: ऋषभस्य
honour extended of The Supreme Person,
जगु: कृतानि पुण्यानि
sang of the deeds purifying
तत्-कर-रुह-स्पर्श-प्रमोदा:
by His hand and nails touch enraptured

The beauty of the cheeks of the Gopis was enhanced by the shining gold ear-rings, and the lustre of the curly locks, and their nectar like laughter and glances. Extending their honour to Him, they, enraptured by the touch of the hand and nails of The Supreme Person, sang of His purifying deeds.


ताभिर्युत: श्रममपोहितुमङ्ग धृष्टस्रज: स कुचकुङ्कुमरञ्जिताया: ।

गन्धर्वपालिभिरनुद्रुत आविशद् वा: श्रान्तो गजीभिरिभराडिव भिन्नसेतु: ॥२३॥


ताभि:-युत: श्रमम्-अपोहितुम्-
with them accompanied, the fatigue to dispel
अङ्ग-धृष्ट-स्रज: स:
by His body crushed garlanded, He,
कुच-कुङ्कुम-रञ्जिताया:
of bosom's sandal paste smeared
गन्धर्व-पालिभि:-अनुद्रुत
the Gandharva chief, like the bumble bees
आविशद् वा: श्रान्त:
entered the water, (of Yamuna) exhausted
गजीभि:-इभ-राड-इव
with the she elephants the elephant lord like
भिन्न-सेतु:
breaking all embankments,

He, Krishna, was accompanied by the Gopis and followed by the bumble bees, like the chief of the Gandharvas, hovering on His crushed garland which was tainted by the sandal paste of the bosom of the Gopis. The Lord entered the waters of Yamuna, with the Gopis, to dispel His fatigue, breaking all reservations, just like the leader of the elephants would enter the water with the she elephants, breaking all embankments.


सोऽम्भस्यलं युवतिभि: परिषिच्यमान: प्रेम्णेक्षित: प्रहसतीभिरितस्ततोऽङ्ग ।

वैमानिकै: कुसुमवर्षिभिरीड्यमानो रेमे स्वयं स्वरतिरत्र गजेन्द्रलील: ॥२४॥


स:-अम्भसि-अलम् युवतिभि:
He, in the waters very well, by the young women
परिषिच्यमान: प्रेम्णा-ईक्षित:
sprinkled, lovingly looked at,
प्रहसतीभि:-इत:-तत:-अङ्ग
and laughing, here and there, O Dear!
वैमानिकै: कसुम-वर्षिभि:-
by the areal cars flowers showered
ईड्यमान: रेमे स्वयम् स्वरति:-
and worshipped, sported, Himself Self-revelling,
अत्र गजेन्द्र-लील:
here, like the elephant sporting

O Dear Pareekshit! The Lord was well sprinkled here and there, with water by the laughing young women, who looked at Him lovingly. Here, He, The Self-revelling Lord sported like the elephant, as He was worshiped by the celestial beings and showered with flowers from the areal cars.


ततश्च कृष्णोपवने जलस्थलप्रसूनगन्धानिलजुष्टदिक्तटे ।

चचार भृङ्गप्रमदागणावृतो यथा मदच्युद् द्विरद: करेणुभि: ॥२५॥


तत:-च कृष्ण-उपवने
then, and, Krishna in the groves
जल-स्थल-प्रसून-गन्ध-
by the water and earth flowers' fragrance
अनिल-जुष्ट-दिक्-तटे
breeze laden on all sides, the bank
चचार भृङ्ग-
roamed about, with the bumble bees
प्रमदा-गण-आवृत:
and of young women bevies surrounded
यथा मदच्युत्-द्विरद: करेणुभि:
just as, fluid oozing tusker, with the she elephants

And then, on the bank of the river, in the groves, with the breeze laden with the fragrance of the water and earth flowers' fragrance, roamed Lord Krishna surrounded by the bumble bees and the bevy of young women, just as a tusker oozing the fluid, roams about surrounded by the she elephants.


एवं शशाङ्कांशुविराजिता निशा: स सत्यकामोऽनुरताबलागण: ।

सिषेव आत्मन्यवरुद्धसौरत: सर्वा: शरत्काव्यकथारसाश्रया: ॥२६॥


एवम् शशाङ्क-अंशु-विराजिता
in this manner, in the moon rays, infested
निशा: स: सत्य-काम:-
nights, He, The Lord of unfailing desires
अनुरता-अबला-गण:
with fondly attached bevy of women,
सिषेव आत्मनि-अवरुद्ध-
amorously sported, in Himself, controlling
सौरत: सर्वा: शरत्-काव्य-
the passion, all Autumnal poetic
कथा-रस-आश्रया:
depictions charm attended with

In this manner, in the moon rays infested nights, attended with the charms depicted in the poetic works on Autumn season, He, The Lord of unfailing desire, with the fondly attached bevy of women, amorously sported, with passion controlled in Himself.


राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
संस्थापनाय धर्मस्य प्रशमायेतरस्य च ।

अवतीर्णो हि भगवानंशेन जगदीश्वर: ॥२७॥


संस्थापनाय धर्मस्य
to establish Dharma, (righteousness)
प्रशमाय-इतरस्य च
to suppress the other, (Adharma) and
अवतीर्ण: हि भगवान्-
descended indeed The Lord
अंशेन जगत्-ईश्वर:
with part (incarnation, Balaraama) of universe, The Ruler

The Lord, The Ruler of the universe, descended with His part incarnation, Balaraama, to establish Dharma, righteousness, and to suppress the other, Adharma, unrighteousness.


स कथं धर्मसेतूनां वक्ता कर्ताभिरक्षिता ।

प्रतीपमाचरद् ब्रह्मन् परदाराभिमर्शनम् ॥२८॥


स: कथम् धर्म-सेतूनाम्
He, how, of the righteousness rules
वक्ता कर्ता-अभिरक्षिता
Propounders, Institutor, Conservator,
प्रतीपम्-आचरत् ब्रह्मन्
otherwise behaved, O Holy One!
पर-दारा-अभिमर्शनम्
of others' wives, embracing

O Holy One! How did He then, the propounders, institutor and conservator of the rules of righteousness, behave in a manner otherwise, in that, He embraced the wives of others?


आप्तकामो यदुपति: कृतवान् वै जुगुप्सितम् ।

किमभिप्राय एतं न: संशयं छिन्धि सुव्रत ॥२९॥


आप्त-काम: यदु-पति:
The fulfilled desired, of Yadus The Lord,
कृतवान् वै जुगुप्सितम्
did indeed lowly act
किम्-अभिप्राय: एतम्
what was the intention, this
न: संशयम् छिन्धि सुव्रत
our doubt, do dispel O Sage of sacred vow!

O Sage of sacred vow! The Lord of the Yadus has all His desires fulfilled. With what intention, then, did He do this lowly act? Do dispel this doubt of ours.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
धर्मव्यतिक्रमो दृष्ट ईश्वराणां च साहसम् ।

तेजीयसां न दोषाय वह्ने: सर्वभुजो यथा ॥३०॥


धर्म-व्यतिक्रम: दृष्ट:
of righteousness the violation is seen
ईश्वराणाम् च साहसम्
in the mighty and boldness
तेजीयसाम् न दोषाय
of the glorious, not wrong is
वह्ने: सर्व-भुज: यथा
for the fire to all consume just as

Violation of the righteousness is seen in the conduct of the mighty and is the boldness of the glorious, just as fire is not at wrong in consuming every thing.


नैतत् समाचरेज्जातु मनसापि ह्यनीश्वर: ।

विनश्यत्याचरन् मौढ्याद्यथारुद्रोऽब्धिजं विषम् ॥३१॥


न-एतत् समाचरेत्-जातु
not this should follow, a being,
मनसा-अपि हि-अनीश्वर:
even mentally also, indeed, the not powerful
विनश्यति-आचरन् मौढ्यात्-
(he) will be ruined, following foolishly,
यथा रुद्र:-अब्धिजम् विषम्
just as, Rudra the ocean borne poison

By a person who is not mighty enough, this should not be done even mentally, or he will be ruined, just as any one other than Rudra would be ruined, if he swallowed the ocean borne poison.


ईश्वराणां वच: सत्यं तथैवाचरितं क्वचित् ।

तेषां यत् स्ववचोयुक्तं बुद्धिमांस्तत् समाचरेत् ॥३२॥


ईश्वराणाम् वच: सत्यम्
of the mighty (wise), precept is authoritative
तथा-एव-आचरितम् क्वचित्
and so also their actions, sometimes,
तेषाम् यत् स्व-वच:-युक्तम्
their which own precept inclusive
बुद्धिमान्-तत् समाचरेत्
an intelligent, that should act upon

The precepts of the mighty, wise are authoritative, and also at times their actions. An intelligent person should act upon His own precept including actions only.


कुशलाचरितेनैषामिह स्वार्थो न विद्यते ।

विपर्ययेण वानर्थो निरहंकारिणां प्रभो ॥३३॥


कुशल-आचरितेन्-एषाम्-
good deeds accomplishing their,
इह स्वार्थ:-न विद्यते
here, self-interest is not served
विपर्ययेण वा-अनर्थ:
by the otherwise, or, harm (is done)
निरहंकारिणाम् प्रभो
by the egoless people, O King!

O King! Here, no self-interest of theirs' is served by their accomplishing good deeds, nor does any harm come by their doing otherwise, that is, bad deeds, as, they are ego-less people.


किमुताखिलसत्त्वानां तिर्यङ्मर्त्यदिवौकसाम् ।

ईशितुश्चेशितव्यानां कुशलाकुशलान्वय: ॥३४॥


किम्-उत-अखिल सत्त्वानाम्
how, indeed of all the creatures
तिर्यङ्-मर्त्य-दिवौकसाम्
sub-humans, humans and gods,
ईशितु:-च-ईशितव्यानाम्
to the Supreme Ruler, and under His control
कुशल-अकुशल-अन्वय:
virtue or sin be attached

How, indeed, can any virtue or sin be attached to Him , Who is the Supreme Ruler of all the creatures, sub-humans, humans and gods, who are controlled by Him and are bound with virtues and sins.


यत्पादपङ्कजपरागनिषेवतृप्ता योगप्रभावविधुताखिलकर्मबन्धा: ।

स्वैरं चरन्ति मुनयोऽपि न नह्यमानास्तस्येच्छयाऽऽत्तवपुष: कुत एव बन्ध: ॥३५॥


यत्-पाद-पङ्कज-पराग-
Whose feet lotus pollen
निषेव-तृप्ता: योग-प्रभाव-
imbibing sated, by Yoga's effect
विधुत-अखिल-कर्म-बन्धा:
cleansed entire, Karma bondages,
स्वैरम् चरन्ति मुनय:-अपि
at will roam the sages also
न नह्यमाना:-तस्य-इच्छया-
are not bound by His desire
आत्त-वपुष: कुत एव बन्ध:
having taken a form, (for Him) where is bondage

Those who are sated by imbibing the pollen of the lotus feet of The Lord, those who have cleansed their entire bondages of Karma by the effect of Yoga, such sages roam about at will, for Him then, where is the question of bondage, Who has, at will, taken a form to fulfil their desire.


गोपीनां तत्पतीनां च सर्वेषामेव देहिनाम् ।

योऽन्तश्चरति सोऽध्यक्ष: क्रीडनेनेह देहभाक् ॥३६॥


गोपीनाम् तत्-पतीनाम्
of the Gopis, their husbands
च सर्वेषाम्-एव देहिनाम्
and of all the embodied beings
य:-अन्त:-चरति स:-अध्यक्ष:
Who inside dwells, He, the Witness,
क्रीडनेन-इह देहभाक्
sport fully, here is in physical form

The One Who dwells inside the Gopis, their husbands and inside all the embodied beings, Who is The Witness of all, He sport fully has taken a physical form.


अनुग्रहाय भूतानां मानुषं देहमास्थित: ।

भजते तादृशी क्रीडा या: श्रुत्वा तत्परो भवेत् ॥३७॥


अनुग्रहाय भूतानाम्
to grace the created beings
मानुषम् देहम्-आस्थित:
a human body has assumed
भजते तादृशी क्रीडा:
engages in such sports
या: श्रुत्वा तत्-पर: भवेत्
which hearing of, to Him attracted may be

The Lord, in order to shower grace on the created beings, has assumed a human body and indulges in such sports, as the Raasa Leelaa, hearing of which, they may be attracted to Him.


नासूयन् खलु कृष्णाय मोहितास्तस्य मायया ।

मन्यमाना: स्वपार्श्वस्थान् स्वान् स्वान् दारान् व्रजौकस: ॥३८॥


न-असूयन् खलु कृष्णाय
were not jealous surely with Krishna,
मोहिता:-तस्य मायया
deluded by His Maayaa,
मन्यमाना: स्व-पार्श्वस्थान्
considering, own near being
स्वान् स्वान् दारान् व्रज-औकस:
their own wives, the Vraja people

The people of Vraja were not jealous of Shree Krishna, deluded by His Maayaa, they considered their own wives to be near them.


ब्रह्मरात्र उपावृत्ते वासुदेवानुमोदिता: ।

अनिच्छन्त्यो ययुर्गोप्य: स्वगृहान् भगवत्प्रिया: ॥३९॥


ब्रह्मरात्र उपावृत्ते
Brahma's night, coming to close,
वासुदेव-अनुमोदिता:
by Vaasudeva's approval
अनिच्छन्त्य: ययु:-गोप्य:
unwillingly went the Gopis
स्व-गृहान् भगवत्-प्रिया:
to own houses, The Lord's beloveds

At the end of the night of Brahmaa, when the early morning approached, the Gopis, beloved of The Lord, by the approval of Vaasudeva, unwillingly returned to their own houses.


विक्रीडितं व्रजवधूभिरिदं च विष्णो: श्रद्धान्वितोऽनुशृणुयादथ वर्णयेद् य: ।

भक्तिं परां भगवति प्रतिलभ्य कामं हृद्रोगमाश्वपहिनोत्यचिरेण धीर: ॥४०॥


विक्रीडितम् व्रज-वधूभि:-इदम् च
amorous sporting with the Vraja women, this, and
विष्णो: श्रद्धा-अन्वित:-
of Vishnu, reverence full of
अनुशृणुयात्-अथ वर्णयेत् य:
sequentially hears, then, describes, who
भक्तिम् पराम् भगवति
devotion supreme in The Lord
प्रतिलभ्य कामम् हृत्-रोगम्-
attaining, desire, the mind's malady
आशु-अपहिनोति-अचिरेण धीर:
soon overcomes, before long, master of his own self

Who so ever sequentially and with full reverence hears of this amorous sporting of Lord Vishnu with the Vraja women, and also describes it, soon attains supreme devotion in The Lord, and he, the master of his own self, before long overcomes desire, the malady of the mind.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे रासक्रीडा वर्णनं नाम त्रयस्त्रिंश: अध्याय: ॥३३॥


Thus ends the thirty-third discourse entitled ' A Description of the (actual) Raasa-Play', in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
