श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एकदा देवयात्रायां गोपाला जातकौतुका: ।

अनोभिरनडुद्युक्तै: प्रययुस्तेम्बिकावनम् ॥१॥


एकदा देव-यात्रायाम्
once, during Shiva-raatri
गोपाला: जात-कौतुका:
the Gopas out of inquisitiveness
अनोभि:-अनडुत्-युक्तै:
by carts bullocks drawn
प्रययु:-ते-अम्बिका-वनम्
went they to Ambikaa vana

Once on Shiva-raatri day, the Gopalas got inquisitive, and they went to the Ambikaa vana temple, riding the carts drawn by bullocks.


तत्र स्नात्वा सरस्वत्यां देवं पशुपतिं विभुम् ।

आनर्चुरर्हणैर्भक्त्या देवीं च नृपतेऽम्बिकाम् ॥२॥


तत्र स्नात्वा सरस्वत्याम्
there, taking a bath, in the Saraswati (river)
देवम् पशुपतिम् विभुम्
the Lord Shiva, the almighty
आनर्चु:-अर्हणै:-भक्त्या
worshipped with offerings with devotion,
देवीम् च नृपते-अम्बिकाम्
the goddess and O King! Ambikaa

There, they took a bath in the river Saraswati, and with devotion worshipped with offerings, the all mighty lord Shiva, and the goddess Ambikaa, O King!


गावो हिरण्यं वासांसि मधु मध्वन्नमादृता: ।

ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददु: सर्वे देवो न: प्रीयतामिति ॥३॥


गाव: हिरण्यम् वासांसि
cows, gold, clothes,
मधु मधु-अन्नम्-आदृता:
honey, sweets, food, with reverence
ब्राह्मणेभ्य: ददु: सर्वे
to the Braahmanas, gave all of them,
देव: न: प्रीयताम्-इति
'the god may be pleased with us', thus

With reverence they all offered to the Braahmanas, cows, gold, clothes, honey, sweets, and food, praying, 'May the Lord be pleased with us.'


ऊषु: सरस्वतीतीरे जलं प्राश्य धृतव्रता: ।

रजनीं तां महाभागा नन्दसुनन्दकादय: ॥४॥


ऊषु: सरस्वती-तीरे
slept, on Saraswati's bank
जलम् प्राश्य धृत-व्रता:
water subsisting on, taken a vow,
रजनीम् ताम् महाभागा
night that, the blessed ones,
नन्द-सुनन्दक-आदय:
Nanda, Sunandaka and others

They, the blessed ones, Nanada, Sunandaka and others, having taken a vow, subsisted on water, and that night, they slept on the banks of the river Saraswati.


कश्चिन्महानहिस्तस्मिन् विपिनेऽतिबुभुक्षित: ।

यदृच्छयाऽऽगतो नन्दं शयानमुरगोऽग्रसीत् ॥५॥


कश्चित्-महान्-अहि:-तस्मिन्
some huge snake, in that
विपिने-अति-बुभुक्षित:
forest, very much starved
यदृच्छया-आगत: नन्दम्
by Providence came, Nanda
शयानम्-उरग:-अग्रसीत्
sleeping, the snake approached

A huge snake, very much starved, by Providence came in that forest, and it approached the sleeping Nanda.


स चुक्रोशाहिना ग्रस्त: कृष्ण कृष्ण महानयम् ।

सर्पो मां ग्रसते तात प्रपन्नं परिमोचय ॥६॥


स: चुक्रोश-अहिना ग्रस्त:
he shouted, by the snake seized
कृष्ण कृष्ण महान्-अयम्
'Krishna! O Krishna! huge this
सर्प: माम् ग्रसते तात
snake, me devours, O Dear!
प्रपन्नम् परिमोचय
Seeking Your shelter, save me'

Seized by the snake, he shouted, 'Krishna! Krishna! O Dear! I seek Your shelter, this snake is devouring me, do save me.'


तस्य चाक्रन्दितं श्रुत्वा गोपाला: सहसोत्थिता: ।

ग्रस्तं च दृष्ट्वा विभ्रान्ता: सर्पं विव्यधुरुल्मुकै: ॥७॥


तस्य च-आक्रन्दितम् श्रुत्वा
his and cries hearing,
गोपाला: सहसा-उत्थिता:
the Gopalas suddenly got up
ग्रस्तम् च दृष्ट्वा विभ्रान्ता:
swallowed and seeing, bewildered,
सर्पम् विव्यधु:-उल्मुकै:
the snake struck with fire brands

Hearing his cries, the Gopalas suddenly got up, and were bewildered to see him swallowed, and they struck the snake with fire brands.


अलातैर्दह्यमानोऽपि नामुञ्चत्तमुरङ्गम: ।

तमस्पृशत् पदाभ्येत्य भगवान् सात्वतां पति: ॥८॥


अलातै:-दह्यमान:-अपि
by ambers burnt even,
न-अमुञ्चत्-तम्-उरङ्गम:
did not leave him, the reptile
तम्-अस्पृशत् पदा-अभ्येत्य
him touched by foot, coming near,
भगवान् सात्वतां पति:
The Lord of the Yadus the Protector

Though scorched by ambers, the reptile did not leave Nanda. The Lord, the Protector of the Yadus, then came near and touched it with His foot.


स वै भगवत: श्रीमत्पादस्पर्शहताशुभ: ।

भेजे सर्पवपुर्हित्वा रूपं विद्याधरार्चितम् ॥९॥


स: वै भगवत: श्रीमत्-
he, indeed by the Lord's glorious
पाद-स्पर्श-हत-अशुभ:
foot touched, destroyed all evil (Karmas)
भेजे सर्प-वपु:-हित्वा
attained, the serpent body, casting off
रूपम् विद्याधर-अर्चितम्
form by the Vidyaadharas worshipped

Indeed, he, touched by the glorious foot of The Lord, was washed off of all his evil Karmas, cast off the serpent body and attained a shining form, which was honoured by the Vidyaadharas.


तमपृच्छद्धृषीकेश: प्रणतं समुपस्थितम् ।

दीप्यमानेन वपुषा पुरुषं हेममालिनम् ॥१०॥


तम्-अपृच्छत्-हृषीकेश:
him asked, The Ruler of the senses, (Krishna)
प्रणतम् समुपस्थितम्
the bowing low, standing near
दीप्यमानेन वपुषा
with shining body
पुरुषम् हेम-मालिनम्
the person with golden necklace

Lord Krishna, The Ruler of the senses, asked him, who, with a shining form and golden necklace, was now standing near by and bowing low to Him,…..


को भवान् परया लक्ष्म्या रोचतेऽद्भुतदर्शन: ।

कथं जुगुप्सितामेतां गतिं वा प्रापितोऽवश: ॥११॥


क: भवान् परया लक्ष्म्या
'Who are you? with great splendour
रोचते-अद्भुत-दर्शन:
are shining, with a wonderful form
कथम् जुगुप्सिताम्-एताम्
how dispisable this
गतिम् वा प्रापित:-अवश:
form or come to, helplessly

'Who are you, that are shining with great splendour and are with a wonderful form? How did you helplessly come to this dispisable form?


सर्प उवाच -
The snake said -
अहं विद्याधर: कश्चिद् सुदर्शन इति श्रुत: ।

श्रिया स्वरूपसम्पत्त्या विमानेनाचरं दिश: ॥१२॥


अहम् विद्याधर: कश्चिद्
’I am a Vidyaadhara, at one time,
सुदर्शन इति श्रुत:
Sudarshana thus known as
श्रिया स्व-रूप-सम्पत्त्या
by splendour and own looks, and wealth,
विमानेन-अचरम् दिश:
by an areal car, went about in all directions

'I am a Vidyaadhara, known as Sudarshana. Endowed with splendour and the wealth of good looks, at one time, I went about in all directions in an areal car.'


ऋषीन् विरूपानङ्गिरस: प्राहसं रूपदर्पित: ।

तैरिमां प्रापितो योनिं प्रलब्धै: स्वेन पाप्मना ॥१३॥


ऋषीन् विरूपान्-अङ्गिरस:
the sage ugly looking, of Angirasa (line)
प्राहसम् रूप-दर्पित:
laughed at, good looks proud of
तै:-इमाम् प्रापित: योनिम्
by them to this attained the form
प्रलब्धै: स्वेन पाप्मना
enraged by my own sin

Being proud of my own good looks, I laughed at the ugly sages of the line of Angirasa. I attained this form by them being enraged and by my own sin.


शापो मेऽनुग्रहायैव कृतस्तै: करुणात्मभि: ।

यदहं लोकगुरुणा पदा स्पृष्टो हताशुभ: ॥१४॥


शाप: मे-अनुग्रहाय-एव
curse my, blessing for only
कृत:-तै: करुण-आत्मभि:
was done by them, the compassion hearted
यत्-अहम् लोक-गुरुणा
in that, I, by The universal Preceptor
पदा स्पृष्ट: हत-अशुभ:
foot touched, am cleansed of sins

The curse given to me by them, the compassionate hearted, was for my blessings, in that, touched by Your foot, The Preceptor of the universe, I am cleansed of all sins.


तं त्वाहं भवभीतानां प्रपन्नानां भयापहम् ।

आपृच्छे शापनिर्मुक्त: पादस्पर्शादमीवहन् ॥१५॥


तम् त्वा-अहम् भव-भीतानाम्
Him, You, I, transmigration afraid of
प्रपन्नानाम् भय-अपहम्
and seeking shelter in You, The sorrow Dispeller,
आपृच्छे शाप-निर्मुक्त:
seek leave, of curse redeemed
पाद-स्पर्शात्-अमीव-हन्
by the feet's touch, which is sin destroyer

I, redeemed of the curse, by the touch of Your feet, which is the destroyer of all sin, ask leave of You, The Shelter of those who are afraid of transmigration, and The sorrow Dispeller, of those who bow down to You.


प्रपन्नोऽस्मि महायोगिन् महापुरुष सत्पते ।

अनुजानीहि मां देव सर्वलोकेश्वरेश्वर ॥१६॥


प्रपन्न:-अस्मि महायोगिन्
(I) bowing am, O Great Yogi!
महापुरुष सत्पते
O Supreme Person! O Protector of the righteous!
अनुजानीहि माम्
allow me
सर्वलोकेश्वरेश्वर
of all the world's lords The Lord

O Great Yogi! O Supreme Person! O Protector of the righteous! I bow to You, The Lord of the lords of the whole world, grant me leave.


ब्रह्मदण्डाद् विमुक्तोऽहं सद्यस्तेऽच्युत दर्शनात् ।

यन्नाम गृह्णन्नखिलान् श्रोतृनात्मानमेव च

सद्य: पुनाति किं भूयस्तस्य स्पृष्ट: पदा हि ते ॥१७॥


ब्रह्म-दण्डात् विमुक्त:-अहम्
from Braahmana's curse freed I
सद्य:-ते-अच्युत दर्शनात्
instantly by Your O Immortal Lord! Sight
यत्-नाम गृह्णन्-अखिलान्
Whose name uttering, all those
श्रोतृन्-आत्मानम्-एव च
hearing, self also and
सद्य: पुनाति किम् भूय:-
soon purifies, what again,
तस्य स्पृष्ट: पदा हि ते
his, touched by feet surely Your

O Immortal Lord! I was freed of the curse of the Braahmana, instantly, by Your sight. All those who hear Your name, uttered by a person, are soon purified, as well as the one who utters Your name, then, what is strange of the one who is touched by Your feet?


इत्यनुज्ञाप्य दाशार्हं परिक्रम्याभिवन्द्य च ।

सुदर्शनो दिवं यात: कृच्छ्रान्नन्दश्च मोचित: ॥१८॥


इति-अनुज्ञाप्य दाशार्हम्
thus taking leave of Shree Krishna
परिक्रम्य-अभिवन्द्य च
going round, prostrating and
सुदर्शन: दिवम् यात:
Sudarshana to heaven ascended
कृच्छ्रात्-नन्द:-च मोचित:
from trouble Nanda and was rescued

Sudarshana, then taking leave of Shree Krishna, and going round Him, and prostrating before Him, ascended to heaven, and Nanda was rescued from peril.


निशाम्य कृष्णस्य तदात्मवैभवं व्रजौकसो विस्मितचेतसस्तत: ।

समाप्य तस्मिन् नियमं पुनर्व्रजं नृपाययुस्तत् कथयन्त आदृता: ॥१९॥


निशाम्य कृष्णस्य तत्-
hearing of Krishna's that
आत्म-वैभवम् व्रजौकस:
peculiar glory, the Vraja people
विस्मित-चेतस:-तत:
wonderstruck minded, from there,
समाप्य तस्मिन् नियमम्
completing in that (place) the rituals,
पुन:-व्रजम् नृप-आययु:-
again to Vraja, O King! Returned,
तत् कथयन्त आदृता:
His (deeds) recounting, with reverence

O King! Hearing of that peculiar glory of Shree Krishna, the minds of the Vraja people were struck with wonder. They completed the rituals of that place and retuned from there to Vraja, reverently recounting His deeds.


कदाचिदथ गोविन्दो रामश्चाद्भुतविक्रम: ।

विजह्रतुर्वने रात्र्यां मध्यगौ व्रजयोषिताम् ॥२०॥


कदाचित्-अथ गोविन्द:
at sometime after that, Govinda
राम:-च-अद्भुत-विक्रम:
Balaraama and of strange valour
विजह्रतु:-वने रात्र्याम्
roamed in the forest, in the night,
मध्यगौ व्रज-योषिताम्
in the midst going of the Vraja women

At sometime after that, Govinda and Balaraama, of strange valour, went in the forest at night and roamed there in the midst of the Vraja women.


उपगीयमानौ ललितं स्त्रीजनैर्बद्धसौहृदै: ।

स्वलङ्कृतानुलिप्ताङ्गौ स्रग्वीणौ विरजोऽम्बरौ ॥२१॥


उपगीयमानौ ललितम्
being sung of melodiously
स्त्री-जनै:-बद्ध-सौहृदै:
by the women folk, tied (to them) with love,
स्वलङ्कृत-अनुलिप्त-अङ्गौ
(adorned with) good ornaments, smeared limbs
स्रग्वीणौ विरज:-अम्बरौ
garlanded, freshly dressed

They were being sung of by the women folk who were tied to them with love. They were adorned with good ornaments, their limbs were smeared with sandal paste, were wearing garlands and were dressed in fresh clothes.


निशामुखं मानयन्तावुदितोडुपतारकम् ।

मल्लिकागन्धमत्तालिजुष्टं कुमुदवायुना ॥२२॥


निशा-आमुखम् मानयन्तौ-
night approaching making use of
उदित-उडुप-तारकम्
with the appearance of the Moon and stars
मल्लिका-गन्ध-मत्त-
with jasmine fragrance, intoxicated
अलि-जुष्टम् कुमुद-वायुना
bees, laden with water lilies the breeze

They made use of the approaching night with the appearance of the Moon and the stars, the atmosphere full of jasmine fragrance intoxicating the bees, and the breeze laden with the fragrance of water-lilies.


जगतु: सर्वभूतानां मन:श्रवणमङ्गलम् ।

तौ कल्पयन्तौ युगपत् स्वरमण्डलमूर्च्छितम् ॥२३॥


जगतु: सर्व-भूतानाम्
sang, of all the embodied beings
मन:-श्रवण-मङ्गलम् तौ
minds and ears delighting, they
कल्पयन्तौ युगपत्
experimenting together
स्वर-मण्डल मूर्च्छितम्
the musical notes with high and low scales

Making use of the night, the two brothers sang together experimenting on the full range of musical notes with the high and low scales delighting the minds and ears of all the created beings.


गोप्यस्तद्गीतमाकर्ण्य मूर्च्छिता नाविदन् नृप ।

स्रंसद्दुकूलमात्मानं स्रस्तकेशस्रजं तत: ॥२४॥


गोप्य:-तत्-गीतम्-आकर्ण्य
the Gopis, that song hearing,
मूर्च्छिता: न-अविदन् नृप
entranced, did not know, O King!
स्रंसत्-दुकूलम्-आत्मानम्
slipped away raiment, their own,
स्रस्त-केश-स्रजम् तत:
dislodged hair garlands, then

O King! The Gopis were entranced when they heard this, and did not know their raiments having slipped from their body or the flower garlands dislodged from their hair braids.


एवं विक्रीडतो: स्वैरं गायतो: सम्प्रमत्तवत् ।

शङ्खचूड इति ख्यातो धनदानुचरोऽभ्यगात् ॥२५॥


एवम् विक्रीडत: स्वैरम्
thus sporting, at will
गायत: सम्प्रमत्त-वत्
singing, highly intoxicated like
शङ्खचूड इति ख्यात:
Shankhachooda thus known
धनद-अनुचर:-अभ्यगात्
Kuber's attendant came (there)

As they were both sporting and singing at will, as though they were highly intoxicated, there came the attendant of Kuber, known as Shankhachooda.


तयोर्निरीक्षतो राजंस्तन्नाथं प्रमदाजनम् ।

क्रोशन्तं कालयामास दिश्युदीच्यामशङ्कित: ॥२६॥


तयो:-निरीक्षत: राजन्-
as they looked on, O King!
तत्-नाथम् प्रमदाजनम्
He The Protector of the women,
क्रोशन्तम् कालयामास
them, crying took away
दिशि-उदीच्याम्-अशङ्कित:
in the direction of North, undeterred (undaunted)

O King! As they both looked on, he undeterred, took away the crying women, whose Protector He was, in the Northern direction.


क्रोशन्तं कृष्ण रामेति विलोक्य स्वपरिग्रहम् ।

यथा गा दस्युना ग्रस्ता भ्रातरावन्वधावताम् ॥२७॥


क्रोशन्तम् कृष्ण राम-इति
crying, 'Krishna! Balaraama!' thus,
विलोक्य स्व-परिग्रहम्
their own women folk,
यथा गा: दस्युना ग्रस्ता:
just as cows by the thief seized
भ्रातरौ-अन्वधावताम्
the two brothers, followed them

The two brothers heard their own women folk crying, 'O Krishna! O Balaraama!', just as the cows seized by the thief, so, they ran in pursuit.


मा भैष्टेत्यभयारावौ शालहस्तौ तरस्विनौ ।

आसेदतुस्तं तरसा त्वरितं गुह्यकाधमम् ॥२८॥


मा भैष्ट-इति-अभय-आरावौ
'Do not be afraid', thus fearlessness assuring words
शाल-हस्तौ तरस्विनौ
Shaala tree in hand of both nimble footed
आसेदतु:-तम् तरसा
caught him, soon,
त्वरितम् गुह्यक-अधमम्
swiftly, the Guhyaka vile

'Do not be afraid', thus shouting the fearlessness assuring words, soon, the two nimble footed brothers swiftly caught hold of him, the vile Guhyaka.


स वीक्ष्य तावनुप्राप्तौ कालमृत्यू इवोद्विजन् ।

विसृज्य स्त्रीजनं मूढ: प्राद्रवज्जीवितेच्छया ॥२९॥


स: वीक्ष्य तौ-अनुप्राप्तौ
he observing both of them approaching,
काल-मृत्यु इव-उद्विजन्
Time of Death like, tormented,
विसृज्य स्त्री-जनम्
abandoning the women folk,
मूढ: प्राद्रवत्-जीवित-इच्छया
the fool ran fast, to live wanting to

He observed both the brothers approaching, and tormented like at the approach of Time of death, abandoned the women folk, and ran away fast with the desire to live.


तमन्वधावद् गोविन्दो यत्र यत्र स धावति ।

जिहीर्षुस्तच्छिरोरत्नं तस्थौ रक्षन् स्त्रियो बल: ॥३०॥


तम्-अन्वधावत् गोविन्द:
him ran after Govinda
यत्र यत्र स: धावति
where ever he ran to
जिहीर्षु:-तत्-शिर:-रत्नम्
wanting to snatch his hood gem
तस्थौ रक्षन् स्त्रिय: बल:
stayed to guard the women, Balaraama

Govinda ran after him to where ever he ran to, wanting to snatch away his hood gem. Balaraama stayed back guarding the women.


अविदूर इवाभ्येत्य शिरस्तस्य दुरात्मन: ।

जहार मुष्टिनैवाङ्ग सहचूडामणिं विभु: ॥३१॥


अविदूरे इव-अभ्येत्य
not very far as if, approaching
शिर:-तस्य दुरात्मन:
head his, of the evil minded
जहार मुष्टिना-एव-अङ्ग
struck with the fist only, O Dear!
सह-चूडामणिम् विभु:
with the crest jewel, The Almighty

The Almighty approached him as though not very far, and, O Dear! Struck him on the head with the crest jewel with the fist only.


शङ्खचूडं निहत्यैवं मणिमादाय भास्वरम् ।

अग्रजायाददात् प्रीत्या पश्यन्तीनां च योषिताम् ॥३२॥


शङ्खचूडम् निहत्य-एवम्
Shankhachooda killing thus
मणिम्-आदाय भास्वरम्
the jewel brought lustrous
अग्रजाय-अददात् प्रीत्या
to the elder brother gave lovingly,
पश्यन्तीनाम् च योषिताम्
as looked on and the women

In this manner, having killed Shankhachooda, He brought the lustrous crest jewel and gave it lovingly to His elder brother, as the women looked on.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहम्स्यां संहितायां दशमे स्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे रासक्रीडायां शङ्खचूडवध नाम चतुस्त्रिंश: अध्याय: ॥३४॥


Thus ends the thirty-fourth discourse entitled 'The Lord slays Shankhachooda', in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
