Shree Shuka said -
गोप्य: कृष्णे वनं याते तमनुद्रुतचेतस: ।
कृष्णलीला: प्रगायन्त्यो निन्युर्दु:खेन वासरान् ॥१॥
गोप्य: कृष्णे वनम् याते
the Gopis, on Krishna's to the forest having gone
तम्-अनुद्रुत-चेतस:
Him following mentally
कृष्ण-लीला: प्रगायन्त्य:
Krishna's past times sang loudly,
निन्यु:-दु:खेन वासरान्
and passed sadly the days
On Krishna's going away to the forest, the Gopis followed Him mentally, and sang His past-times loudly, and spent the days sadly.
गोप्य: ऊचु: -
वामबाहुकृतवामकपोलो वल्गितभ्रुरधरार्पितवेणुम् ।
कोमलाङ्गुलिभिराश्रितमार्गं गोप्य ईरयति यत्र मुकुन्द: ॥२॥
वाम-बाहु-कृत-वाम-कपोल:
on the left arm inclined left cheek
वल्गित-भ्रु:-अधर-अर्पित-वेणुम्
with dancing eyebrows, on lower lip resting the flute,
कोमल-अङ्गुलिभि:-आश्रित-मार्गम्
with delicate fingers placed on the holes
गोप्य ईरयति यत्र मुकुन्द:
O Gopis! Plays, where Mukunda (Granter of Liberation)
O Gopis! Where, Mukunda, The Granter of liberation, plays the soft tune on His flute, with His left cheek inclined on the left shoulder, and with the delicate fingers placed on the holes of the flute, and the flute resting on His lower lip,….
व्योमयानवनिता: सह सिद्धैर्विस्मितास्तदुपधार्य सलज्जा: ।
काममार्गणसमर्पितचित्ता: कश्मलं ययुरपस्मृतनीव्य: ॥३॥
व्योम-यान-वनिता:
in the areal cars, the consorts
सह सिद्धै:-विस्मिता:-
with the Siddhas, (their spouses) wonderstruck
तत्-उपधार्य सलज्जा:
that hearing, with shyness
काम-मार्गण-समर्पित-
Cupid making way (towards them) with immersed
चित्ता: कश्मलम् ययु:-
minds, unconscious became
अपस्मृत-नीव्य:
unaware of the strings (of the dislodged skirts)
When, the consorts of the Siddhas, going in the areal cars with their husbands, the Siddhas, hear this melody, they are wonderstruck and Cupid makes way into their hearts, and so, with shyness, their minds immersed in that tune, they become unconscious of the strings of their dislodged skirts.
हन्त चित्रमबला: शृणुतेदं हारहास उरसि स्थिरविद्युत् ।
नन्दसूनुरयमार्तजनानां नर्मदो यर्हि कूजितवेणू: ॥४॥
हन्त चित्रम्-अबला:
Oh! Strange it is, O Women!
शृणुत-इदम् हार-हास:
listen, this of the necklace, the beauty,
उरसि स्थिर-विद्युत्
on the bosom, stationary lightening (like)
नन्द-सूनु:-अयम्-
of Nanda's darling, this,
आर्त-जनानाम् नर्मद:
of the afflicted people, peace giving is,
यर्हि कूजित-वेणू:
when sounded is the flute
'O Women! Listen! It is strange that the beauty of the necklace on His bosom is like stationary lightening, and when the darling of Nanda plays on the flute it gives peace to the afflicted people….
वृन्दशो व्रजवृषा मृगगावो वेणुवाद्यहृतचेतस आरात् ।
दन्तदष्टकवला धृतकर्णा निद्रिता लिखितचित्रमिवासन् ॥५॥
वृन्दश: व्रज-वृषा:
herds of Vraja bulls,
मृग-गाव: वेणु-वाद्य-
deer and cows, by the flute's music
हृत-चेतस: आरात्
minds captivated, nearby,
दन्त-दष्ट-कवला:
by teeth chewed mouth-fulls
धृत-कर्णा: निद्रिता:
erected ears, asleep as if,
लिखित-चित्रम्-इव-आसन्
painted pictures like became
The herds of the Vraja bulls, deer and cows, hearing the music of the flute, with half chewed mouthfuls of grass holding in their teeth, stood near by, with their minds captivated, looked as though they were asleep, or looked like painted pictures.
बर्हिणस्तबकधातुपलाशैर्बद्धमल्लपरिबर्हविडम्ब: ।
कर्हिचित् सबल आलि स गोपैर्गा: समाह्वयति यत्र मुकुन्द: ॥६॥
बर्हिण-स्तबक-धातु-पलाशै:-
peacock feathers, tender leaves, metal tufts,
बद्ध-मल्ल-परिबर्ह-विडम्ब:
tied, wrestler garb taking on
कर्हिचित् सबल आलि स:
sometimes, with Balaraama, O Friend! He
गोपै:-गा: समाह्वयति
with the cowherds, the cows calls,
यत्र मुकुन्द:
where Mukunda, (The liberation Granter)
O Friends! Sometimes, when, He, Mukunda, flaunting the garb of a wrestler, with tufts of peacock feathers, flowers, tender leaves, in the hair, and painted with minerals, with Balaraama, and the other cowherd boys, calls the cows,….
तर्हि भग्नगतय: सरितो वै तत्पादाम्बुजरजोऽनिलनीतम् ।
स्पृहयतीर्वयमिवाबहुपुण्या: प्रेमवेपितभुजा: स्तिमिताप: ॥७॥
तर्हि भग्न-गतय: सरित: वै
at that time, paused motion the rivers indeed
तत्-पाद-अम्बुज-
His feet lotus
रज:-अनिल-नीतम्
pollen, (through) the wind to get
स्पृहयती:-वयम्-इव-
desires, us like
अबहु-पुण्या:
not of much merit
प्रेम-वेपित-भुजा:
by love shivering arms
स्तिमित-आप:
stilled waters
At that time, even the rivers' motion is stopped, as they desire to take the pollen dust of His lotus feet through the air. Because they also, like us, do not have much merit, when they do not get it, their arms in the form of waves shiver, and the waters are stilled, as they lye low.
अनुचरै: समनुवर्णितवीर्यं आदिपूरुष इवाचलभूति: ।
वनचरो गिरितटेषु चरन्तीर्वेणुनाऽऽह्वयति गा: स यदा हि ॥८॥
अनुचरै: समनुवर्णित-
by (His) followers, extensively described
वीर्यम् आदि-पूरुष
(His) prowess, The Ancient Person
इव-अचल-भूति:
like everlasting, fortune,
वनचर: गिरि-तटेषु
in the forest roams, in the mountain valleys,
चरन्ती:-वेणुना-आह्वयति
the grazing, by the flute calls,
गा: स: यदा हि
the cows He, whenever indeed
Indeed, whenever, He, Krishna, of everlasting fortune, like that of The Ancient Person, Vishnu, Whose prowess are extensively well sung of by His followers, roams about in the forest calling the cows, grazing in the vallies of the mountain, by playing on the flute, ......
वनलतास्तरव आत्मनि विष्णुं व्यञ्जयन्त्य इव पुष्पफलाढ्या: ।
प्रणतभारविटपा मधुधारा: प्रेमहृष्टतनव: ससृजु: स्म ॥९॥
वन-लता:-तरव: आत्मनि
the forest creepers, trees, in themselves
विष्णुम् व्यञ्जयन्त्य: इव
Vishnu imagining, as if,
पुष्प-फल-आढ्या:
with flowers and fruits laden,
प्रणत-भार-विटपा:
bowing (due to) the weight, the trees,
मधु-धारा: प्रेम-हृष्ट-
honey streams, with love thrilled
तनव: ससृजु: स्म
bodies, oozing were
In the forest, the creepers and the trees imagined themselves to be Vishnu, laden with abundance of flowers and fruits, and bowing due to their weight, their bodies thrilled with the love of Krishna, were oozing streams of honey.
दर्शनीयतिलको वनमालादिव्यगन्धतुलसीमधुमत्तै: ।
अलिकुलैरलघुगीतमभीष्टमाद्रियन् यर्हि सन्धितवेणु: ॥१०॥
दर्शनीय-तिलक:
wearing a (worthy to be looked at) Tilaka
वन-माला-दिव्य
sylvan flowers garland, divine
गन्ध-तुलसी-मधु-मत्तै:
smelling Tulasi, with honey intoxicated
अलि-कुलै:-अलघु-गीतम्-
bees swarms' the high pitched hum
अभीष्टम्-आद्रियन्
welcome admiring
यर्हि सन्धित-वेणु:
when, set the flute (on the lip)
When Krishna, wearing His worthy to be looked at Tilaka, the garland of sylvan flowers and divine Tulasi, admiring the high pitched and welcome humming of the swarm of intoxicated bees hovering around the garland, sets the flute to the lips, and plays,….
सरसि सारहंसविहङ्गाश्चारुगीतहृतचेतस एत्य ।
हरिमुपासत ते यतचित्ता हन्त मीलितदृशो धृतमौना: ॥११॥
सरसि सार-हंस-
in the lakes, (dwelling) cranes, swans,
विहङ्गा:-चारु-गीत-
and birds, by the beautiful music
हृत-चेतस: एत्य
captivated minds, come near
हरिम्-उपासते
Shree Hari worship,
ते यत-चित्ता: हन्त
they, collected minded, surprisingly,
मीलित-दृश: धृत-मौना:
with closed eyes, observing silence
Surprisingly, the cranes, swans and other birds dwelling in the lakes come near Shree Krishna, their minds captivated by the alluring beautiful music, and worship Him, with collected minds, closed eyes and observing silence.
सहबल: स्रगवतंसविलास: सानुषु क्षितिभृतो व्रजदेव्य: ।
हर्षयन् यर्हि वेणुरवेण जातहर्ष उपरम्भति विश्वम् ॥१२॥
सह-बल:
with Balaraama
स्रग्-अवतंस-विलास:
garland on the shoulder adorned
सानुषु क्षिति-भृत:
getting up on the summit of the mountain
व्रज-देव्य:
O Ladies of Vraja!
हर्षयन् यर्हि
delighting, when,
वेणु-रवेण जात-हर्ष:
by the flutes sound, Himself full of delight
उपरम्भति विश्वम्
embraces the universe,….
O Ladies of Vraja! When, He, adorned with the garland on the shoulders, with Balaraama, gets up on the summit of the mountain, and delights the world with the sound of the flute, and Himself full of delight, embraces the universe,…..
महदतिक्रमणशङ्कितचेता मन्दमन्दमनुगर्जति मेघ: ।
सुहृदमभ्यवर्षत् सुमनोभिश्छायया च विदधत् प्रतपत्रम् ॥१३॥
महत्-अतिक्रमण-शङ्कित-चेता:
The Great, superseding afraid of, minded
मन्द-मन्दम्-अनुगर्जति मेघ:
softly softly following rumbles the cloud
सुहृदम्-अभ्यवर्षत्
The Friend showers
सुमनोभि:-छायया
flowers, by the shadow
च विदधत् प्रतपत्रम्
and provided an umbrella
The cloud, in the mind, afraid of superseding The Great One, in music, rumbled softly keeping in tune with the flute's tune, and showered The Friend with sprays of water, as though with flowers, and with his shadow provided an umbrella for Him.
विविधगोपचरणेषु विदग्धो वेणुवाद्य उरुधा निजशिक्षा: ।
तव सुत: सति यदाधरबिम्बे दत्तवेणुरनयत् स्वरजाती: ॥१४॥
विविध-गोप-चरणेषु
in various cowherds' games
विदग्ध: वेणु-वाद्य:
expert, in flute playing
उरुधा निज-शिक्षा:
many tunes by self evolved, plays,
तव सुत: सति यदा-
your son, O Virtuous Lady! When
अधर-बिम्बे दत्त-वेणु-
on the lip Bimba (fruit like red), placed flute,
रनयत् स्वर-जाती:
plays tunes varied
O Virtuous Lady! Your son is an expert in the games played by the cowherds, and when, He places the flute on His Bimba fruit like red lips, playing the many varied tunes evolved by Himself, ……
सवनशस्तदुपधार्य सुरेशा: शक्रशर्वपरमेष्टिपुरोगा: ।
कवय आनतकन्धरचित्ता: कश्मलं ययुरनिश्चिततत्त्वा: ॥१५॥
सवनश:-तत्-उपधार्य
the nectre juice like that hearing
सुरेशा: शक्र-शर्व-
the chief of the gods, Indra, Shiva,
परमेष्टि-पुरोगा:
Brahmaa, the leading functionaries of the universe
कवय: आनत-कन्धर-
the wise, with stooped shoulders,
चित्ता: कश्मलम् ययु:-
minds, perplexed were
अनिश्चित-तत्त्वा:
not sure to decipher the substance
The leading functionaries of the universe, the chief of the gods, Indra, Shiva, Brahmaa, themselves wise, heard the nectar juice like tune of the flute and were perplexed, as they were not able to decipher its basic substance .
निजपदाब्जदलैर्ध्वजवज्रनीरजाङ्कुशविचित्रललामै: ।
व्रजभुव: शमयन् खुरतोदं वर्ष्मधुर्यगतिरीडितवेणु: ॥१६॥
निज-पद-अब्ज-दलै:-
with own feet lotus petals
ध्वज-वज्र-नीरज-
with (marks of) flag, thunderbolt, lotus,
अङ्कुश-विचित्र-ललामै:
goad, wonderful tender
व्रज-भुव: शमयन्
Vraja's soil soothing
खुर-तोदम्
the hoof's pain (of the cattle)
वर्ष्मधुर्य-गति:-
with a royal elephant's gait
ईडित-वेणु:
playing the flute
He with His wonderful tender feet, with the marks of flag, thunderbolt, lotus, and goad treads the soil of Vraja, soothing its pain caused by the hooves of the cattle, in royal elephant's gait, playing the flute.
व्रजति तेन वयं सविलासवीक्षणार्पितमनोभववेगा: ।
कुजगतिं गमिता न विदाम: कश्मलेन कबरं वसनं वा ॥१७॥
व्रजति तेन वयम्
by (His) walk, we,
सविलास-वीक्षण-
and (His) amorous glances
अर्पित-मनोभव-वेगा:
delve into love intense
कुज-गतिम् गमिता:
of trees (insensate) state reduced to
न विदाम: कश्मलेन
not aware of due to infatuation
कबरम् वसनम् वा
braids clothes or
By seeing His graceful walk and amorous glances, we delve into intense love, and are reduced to the insensate state of the trees, and due to infatuation are unaware of our braids and clothes.
मणिधर: क्वचिदागणयन् गा मालया दयितगन्धतुलस्या: ।
प्रणयिनोऽनुचरस्य कदांसे प्रक्षिपन् भुजमगायत यत्र ॥१८॥
मणिधर: क्वचित्-अगणयन्
adorning the jewel, counting
गा: मालया दयित
the cows on the string of (His) dear
गन्ध-तुलस्या:
scented Tulasi
प्रणयिन:-अनुचरस्य
of a loving follower's
कदांसे प्रक्षिपन्
shoulder resting
भुजम्-अगायत यत्र
the arm, sang when
When, adorning the jewels, and counting the cows on His dear Tulasi beads' string with its dear fragrance, and resting His arm on the shoulder of a loving follower, He sings,….
क्वणितवेणुरववञ्चितचित्ता: कृष्णमन्वसत कृष्णगृहिण्य: ।
गुणगणार्णमनुगत्य हरिण्यो गोपिका इव विमुक्तगृहाशा: ॥१९॥
क्वणित-वेणु-रव-
of the played on flutes sound
वञ्चित-चित्ता:
stolen minded
कृष्णम्-अन्वसत
to Krishna come near,
कृष्ण-गृहिण्य:
the black antelopes' wives
गुण-गण-अर्णम्-
the virtues mass ocean
अनुगत्य हरिण्य:
following Him the she-deer
गोपिका: इव
Gopikaas like
विमुक्त-गृह-आशा:
free of home (returning) hope
By hearing the sound of the tune played on the flute, the wives of the black antelopes come near Krishna, and the she-deers follow Him, the ocean of the mass of virtues, and like the Gopikaas are free from the hope of returning to their homes.
कुन्ददामकृतकौतुकवेषो गोपगोधनवृतो यमुनायाम् ।
नन्दसूनुरनघे तव वत्सो नर्मद: प्रणयिनां विजहार ॥२०॥
कुन्द-दाम-कृत-कौतुक-वेष:
(with) jasmine garland made, gaily dressed
गोप-गोधन-वृत:
cowherds, cattle wealth surrounded by
यमुनायाम् नन्द-सूनु:-
in Yamunaa, Nanda's son
अनघे तव वत्स:
O Sinless Yashoda! Your child
प्रणयिनाम् विजहार
with the loving friends sported
O Sinless Yashoda! When your child Nanda's son, gaily dressed with jasmine flowers, etc, surrounded by the cowherds and the cattle wealth sports on the banks of the river Yamuna with His loving friends,…
मन्दवायुरुपवात्यनुकूलं मानयन् मलयजस्पर्शेन ।
वन्दिनस्तमुपदेवगणा ये वाद्यगीतबलिभि: परिवव्रु: ॥२१॥
मन्द-वायु:-उपवाति-अनुकूलम्
soft breeze blows agreeable
मानयन् मलयज-स्पर्शेन
honouring (Him)with sandal like cool touch
वन्दिन:-तम्-
as panegyrists, Him
उपदेव-गणा: ये
the demy-gods groups those
वाद्य-गीत-
by instrumental and vocal music
बलिभि: परिवव्रु:
and offerings serve Him
A soft agreeable breeze with a sandal paste like cool and fragrant touch blows and honours Him, the demigods' groups, playing the role of panegyrists, serve Him with instrumental and vocal music and various offerings.
वत्सलो व्रजगवां यदगध्रो वन्द्यमानचरण: पथि वृद्धै: ।
कृत्स्नगोधनमुपोह्य दिनान्ते गीतवेणुरनुगेडितकीर्ति: ॥२२॥
वत्सल: व्रज-गवाम्
the lover of Vraja's cows
यत्-अगध्र: वन्द्यमान
in that, (He) held the mountain, being worshipped
चरण: पथि वृद्धै:
the feet on the way by the oldest (Brahmaa and others)
कृत्स्न-गो-धनम्-उपहोय
all of the cattle wealth collecting
दिन-अन्ते गीत-वेणु:-
at day's end, playing the flute
अनुग-ईडित-कीर्ति:
by the followers sung the glory
He, the lover of the cows, Who for their sake upheld the mountain, His feet are worshipped by the oldest, Brahmaa and others on the way, He, at the end of the day collects the wealth of cattle, playing the flute, and His glories being sung by His followers,.....
उत्सवं श्रमरुचापि दृशीनामुन्नयन् खुररजश्छुरितस्रक् ।
दित्सयैति सुहृदाशिष एष देवकीजठरभूरुडुराज: ॥२३॥
उत्सवम् श्रम-रुचा-
festival, by fatigue pleasant
अपि दृशीनाम्-उन्नयन्
also for the onlookers, giving,
खुर-रज:-छुरित-स्रक्
by the hoofs dust sprayed garland
दित्सया-एति सुहृद-
eager to give, comes, The Dear One
आशिष: एष:
blessings, This
देवकी-जठर-भू:-उडुराज:
Devaki's womb born Moon
Even though fatigued, yet pleasant, giving a festival for the eyes of the onlookers, His garland sprayed by the dust of the hoofs of the cows, eager to give blessings to His dear ones, This, The Moon born of Devaki's womb, comes.
मदविघूर्णितलोचन ईषन् मानद: स्वसुहृदां वनमाली ।
बदरपाण्डुवदनो मृदुगण्डं मण्डयन् कनककुण्डललक्ष्म्या ॥२४॥
मद-विघूर्णित-लोचन
due to inebriety rolling eyes,
ईषन् मानद:
somewhat honouring
स्व-सुहृदाम् वनमाली
own dear ones, wearing sylvan flower garland
बदर-पाण्डु-वदन:
ripened plum like yellow faced
मृदु-गण्डम् मण्डयन्
soft cheeks adorned
कनक-कुण्डल-लक्ष्म्या
with golden ear-rings splendour
Krishna, Whose eyes were somewhat rolling due to inebriety, honouring His own dear ones, wearing a garland of sylvan flowers, His face yellow like a ripened plum, and His charming cheeks adorned with splendorous golden ear-rings,…
यदुपतिर्द्विरदराजविहारो यामिनीपतिरिवैष दिनान्ते ।
मुदितवक्त्र उपयाति दुरन्तं मोचयन् व्रजगवां दिनतापम् ॥२५॥
यदुपति:-द्विरद-राज
of Yadus The Lord, like the elephant leader
विहार: यामिनी-पति:-इव-
sporting, the night's lord, Moon like
एष दिन-अन्ते
This He, at day's end
मुदित-वक्त्र उपयाति
with delightful face, comes,
दुरन्तम् मोचयन्
intense relieving
व्रज-गवाम् दिन-तापम्
of Vraja's cows, Gopis, the day's agony
This, He, The Lord of the Yadus, sporting like the leader of the elephants, like the lord of night, the Moon, comes at the end of the day, relieving the day long agony of the Gopis, (as docile as the cows) caused by separation.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं व्रजस्त्रियो राजन् कृष्णलीला नु गायती: ।
रेमिरेऽह:सु तच्चित्तास्तन्मनस्का महोदया: ॥२६॥
एवम् व्रज-स्त्रिय: राजन्
in this manner, the Vraja women, O King!
कृष्ण-लीला नु गायती:
Krishna's pastimes indeed singing
रेमिरे-अह:सु तत्-चित्ता:-
revelled in the day time, in Him (fixed) intellect
तत्-मनस्का: महोदया:
in Him (fixed) mind, highly blessed
O King! In this manner, the women of Vraja, revelled, singing of the pastimes of Shree Krishna, with their intellects and minds fixed in Him, the highly blessed ones rejoiced even in the day time, in His absence.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे वृन्दावनक्रीडायाम् गोपिकायुगलगीतं नाम पञ्चत्रिंश: अध्याय: ॥३५॥
Thus ends the thirty-fifth discourse entitled 'The Gopis' song in pairs of Verses', in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
