श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अथ तर्ह्यागतो गोष्ठमरिष्टो वृषभासुर: ।

महीं महाककुत्काय: कम्पयन् खुरविक्षताम् ॥१॥


अथ तर्हि-आगत: गोष्ठम्-
then, at that time came in the cowshed of Vraja,
अरिष्ट: वृषभ-असुर:
Arishta bull-demon
महीम् महा-ककुत्-काय:
the earth, with huge hump and body
कम्पयन् खुर-विक्षताम्
shaking, with hoofs torn

Then, at that time, there came a bull-demon, Arishta, with a large hump and huge body, shaking the earth which was already torn by his hoofs.


रम्भमाण: खरतरं पदा च विलिखन् महीम् ।

उद्यम्य पुच्छं वप्राणि विषाणाग्रेण चोद्धरन् ॥२॥


रम्भमाण: खरतरम् पदा
bellowing very harshly by hoofs
च विलिखन् महीम्
and digging the earth,
उद्यम्य पुच्छम् वप्राणि
lifting the tail, mounds of earth
विषाण-अग्रेण च-उद्धरन्
by the horns' ends, and throwing up

He was bellowing very harshly, and digging the earth with his hoofs, and with uplifted tail, lifted mounds of earth with the ends of his horns and threw them up.


किञ्चित् किञ्चिच्छकृन्मुञ्चन् मूत्रयन् स्तब्धलोचन: ।

यस्य निर्ह्रादितेनाङ्ग निष्ठुरेण गवां नृणाम् ॥३॥


किञ्चित् किञ्चित्-शकृत्-
little little dung
मुञ्चन् मूत्रयन् स्तब्ध-लोचन:
discharging, urinating with staring eyes
यस्य निर्ह्रादितेन-अङ्ग
by whose loud roar, O Dear!
निष्ठुरेण गवाम् नृणाम्
violent, of the cows and humans,…

O Dear! He discharged dung and urine little by little and gazed with a stare. By his loud violent roar, of the cows and humans,….


पतन्त्यकालतो गर्भा: स्रवन्ति स्म भयेन वै ।

निर्विशन्ति घना यस्य ककुद्यचलशङ्कया ॥४॥


पतन्ति-अकालत: गर्भा:
fall untimely the premature foetus
स्रवन्ति स्म भयेन वै
discharged by fear, certainly
निर्विशन्ति घना: यस्य
settled the clouds on whose
ककुदि-अचल-शङ्कया
hump, hillock mistaking

Premature foetus are discharged and delivered untimely. On whose hump the clouds settle mistaking it to be a hillock.


तं तीक्ष्णशृङ्गमुद्वीक्ष्य गोप्यो गोपाश्च तत्रसु: ।

पशवो दुद्रुवुर्भीता राजन् संत्यज्य गोकुलम् ॥५॥


तम् तीक्ष्ण-शृङ्गम्-उद्वीक्ष्य
him with sharp horns seeing,
गोप्य: गोपा:-च तत्रसु:
the Gopis, Gopas and were afraid
पशव: दुद्रुवु:-भीता: राजन्
the cows ran away in fear, O King!
संत्यज्य गोकुलम्
leaving behind Gokula

O King! Seeing his sharp horns the Gopis and Gopas were dismayed and the cows ran away in fear leaving Gokula behind.


कृष्ण कृष्णेति ते सर्वे गोविन्दं शरणं ययु: ।

भगवानपि तद् वीक्ष्य गोकुलं भयविद्रुतम् ॥६॥


कृष्ण कृष्णे-इति ते सर्वे
'Krishna! Krishna!' thus, they all
गोविन्दम् शरणम् ययु:
in Govinda's protection went
भगवान्-अपि तत् वीक्ष्य
The Lord also that observed
गोकुलम् भय-विद्रुतम्
Gokula in fear fleeing

They all sought the protection of The Lord, and called out 'Krishna! Krishna!' thus. The Lord also observed that the people of Gokula were fear stricken and were fleeing.


मा भैष्टेति गिराऽऽश्वास्य वृषासुरमुपाह्वयत् ।

गोपालै: पशुभिर्मन्द त्रासितै: किमसत्तम ॥७॥


मा भैष्ट-इति गिरा-आश्वास्य
'Do not fear', thus, with words reassuring,
वृष-असुरम्-उपाह्वयत्
the bull demon challenged
गोपालै: पशुभि:-मन्द
'By the cowherds and the cows, O Fool!
त्रासितै: किम्-असत्तम
By terrorising, what (use) of Evil One'!

Reassuring with words, 'Do not fear,' thus, He challenged the bull demon saying, O Fool! What is the use of terrorising the cowherds and the cows, O Evil One!'


बलदर्पहाहं दुष्टानां त्वद्विधानां दुरात्मनां ।

इत्यास्फोट्याच्युतोऽरिष्टं तलशब्देन कोपयन् ॥८॥


बल-दर्प-हा-अहम् दुष्टानाम्
of might (caused) pride to crush am I, of the wicked
त्वत्-विधानाम् दुरात्मनाम्
your like and evil minded
इति-आस्फोट्य-अच्युत:-
thus, (saying) slapping the arms, The Immortal Lord,
अरिष्टम् तल-शब्देन कोपयन्
Arishta by the clapping sound enraged

"I am here to crush the pride caused by might of the wicked and the evil minded.' Thus saying, He slapped His arms, and The Immortal Lord enraged the demon Arishta, by the clapping sound.


सख्युरंसे भुजाभोगं प्रसार्यावस्थितो हरि: ।

सोऽप्येवं कोपितोऽरिष्ट: खुरेणावनिमुल्लिखन् ।

उद्यत्पुच्छभ्रमन्मेघ: क्रुद्ध: कृष्णमुपाद्रवत् ॥९॥


सख्यु:-अंसे भुजाभोगम्
on the friend's shoulder, arm serpent
प्रसार्य-अवस्थित: हरि:
stretching, stood Shree Hari
स:-अपि-एवम् कोपित:-अरिष्ट:
he also in this manner in anger, Arishta,
खुरेण-अवनिम्-उल्लिखन्
by the hoof the earth digging
उद्यत्-पुच्छ भ्रमन्-मेघ:
uplifting the tail, dispersing the clouds,
क्रुद्ध: कृष्णम्-उपाद्रवत्
wrathful, Krishna attacked

Shree Hari stood stretching His serpent like arm placed on the shoulder of His friend. In this manner, angered, the wrathful demon Arishta dug the earth with his hoof and dispersed the clouds with his uplifted tail, and attacked Shree Krishna.


अग्रन्यस्तविषाणाग्र: स्तब्धासृग्लोचनोऽच्युतम् ।

कटाक्षिप्याद्रवत्तूर्णमिन्द्रमुक्तोऽशनिर्यथा ॥१०॥


अग्रन्यस्त-विषाण-अग्र:
thrusting forward the ends of his horns
स्तब्ध-असृक्-लोचन:-अच्युतम्
with unwinking red eye, The Immortal Lord
कटाक्षिप्य-अद्रवत्-तूर्णम्-
with side glances (looking) charged forcefully
इन्द्र-मुक्त:-अशनि:-यथा
by Indra discharged thunderbolt like

He thrust the ends of his horns forward, and with blood shot unwinking eyes and side glances looked at The Immortal Lord and forcefully charged towards him, like the thunderbolt charged by Indra.


गृहीत्वा शृङ्गयोस्तं वा अष्टादश पदानि स: ।

प्रत्यपोवाह भगवान् गज: प्रतिगजं यथा ॥११॥


गृहीत्वा शृङ्गयो:-तम् वा
catching hold by the horns, him or
अष्टादश पदानि स:
eighteen steps, He
प्रत्यपोवाह भगवान्
pushed back The Lord
गज: प्रतिगजम् यथा
an elephant contesting elephant like

The Lord caught hold of him by the horns and pushed him back eighteen steps, like an elephant pushing a rival elephant.


सोऽपविद्धो भगवता पुनरुत्थाय सत्वर: ।

आपतत् स्विन्नसर्वाङ्गो नि:श्वसन् क्रोधमूर्छित: ॥१२॥


स:-अपविद्ध: भगवता
he, knocked down by The Lord
पुन:-उत्थाय सत्वर:
again getting up hastily
आपतत् स्विन्न सर्व-अङ्ग:
rushed perspiring in the whole body,
नि:श्वसन् क्रोध-मूर्छित:
breathing hard with fury filled

Knocked down by The Lord, he arose hastily, sweating in the whole body, full of fury and breathing hard, rushed forward.


तमापतन्तं स निगृह्य शृङ्गयो: पदा समाक्रम्य निपात्य भूतले ।

निष्पपीडयामास यथाऽऽर्द्रमम्बरं कृत्त्वा विषाणेन जघान सोऽपतत् ॥१३॥


तम्-आपतन्तम् स: निगृह्य
him rushing, He catching hold
शृङ्गयो: पदा समाक्रम्य
of the horns, with feet kicking
निपात्य भूतले
throwing on the ground,
निष्पीड्यामास यथा-
rung him like
आर्द्रम्-अम्बरम् कृत्त्वा
a drenched cloth, cutting
विषाणेन जघान स:-अपतत्
with the horns, hit (till), he fell dead

He caught hold of him by the horns as he rushed forwards, kicking him with the feet threw him on the ground and rung him like a drenched cloth, and hit him till he fell dead.


असृग् वमन् मूत्रशकृत् समुत्सृजन् क्षिपंश्च पादाननवस्थितेक्षण: ।

जगाम कृच्छ्रं निरृतेरथ क्षयं पुष्पै: किरन्तो हरिमीडिरे सुरा: ॥१४॥


असृग् वमन् मूत्र-शकृत्
blood vomiting, urine and dung
समुत्सृजन् क्षिपन्-च पादान्-
discharging, throwing about the legs
अनवस्थित-ईक्षण:
upturned eyes,
जगाम कृच्छ्रम् निरृते:-
died in agony, by Death
अथ क्षयम् पुष्पै: किरन्त:
then killed, with flowers showering
हरिम्-ईडिरे सुरा:
Shree Hari worshipped the gods

The demon died in great agony as if killed by Death itself, as he vomited blood and discharged profuse urine and dung. The gods showered flowers on Shree Hari and worshipped Him.


एवं ककुद्मिनं हत्वा स्तूयमान: स्वजातिभि: ।

विवेश गोष्ठं सबलो गोपीनां नयनोत्सव: ॥१५॥


एवम् ककुद्मिनम् हत्वा
in this manner, the bull having killed,
स्तूयमान: स्व-जातिभि:
glorified by own people,
विवेश गोष्ठम् स-बल:
entered the cowshed with Balaraama,
गोपीनाम् नयन-उत्सव:
of the Gopi's eyes the festival

In this manner, having killed the bull, and being glorified by His own people, He, The Lord, The festival for the eyes of the Gopis, entered the cowshed of Gokula, with Balaraama.


अरिष्टे निहते दैत्ये कृष्णेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ।

कंसायाथाह भगवान् नारदो देवदर्शन: ॥१६॥


अरिष्टे निहते दैत्ये
Arishta having been killed
कृष्णेन-अद्भुत-कर्मणा
by Krishna, of miraculous deeds,
कंसाय-अथ-आह
to Kansa then said
भगवान् नारद: देव-दर्शन:
lord Naarada of divine vision

After Arishta was killed by Krishna of miraculous deeds, lord Naarada of divine vision said to Kansa,….


यशोदाया: सुतां कन्यां देवक्या: कृष्णमेव च ।

रामं च रोहिणीपुत्रं वसुदेवेन बिभ्यता ॥१७॥


यशोदाया: सुताम् कन्याम्
by Yashodaa borne daughter,
देवक्या: कृष्णम्-एव च
of Devaki Krishna, also and,
रामम् च रोहिणी-पुत्रम्
Balaraama, and Rohinee's son,
वसुदेवेन बिभ्यता
by Vasudeva terrified

The daughter was borne of Yashoda. And also, Krishna is Devaki's son, and Balaraama is Rohinee's son. By the terrified Vasudeva,…


न्यस्तौ स्वमित्रे नन्दे वै याभ्यां ते पुरुषा हता: ।

निशम्य तद् भोजपति: कोपात् प्रचलितेन्द्रिय: ॥१८॥


न्यस्तौ स्व-मित्रे नन्दे
was placed in his friends' (place) of Nanda,
वै याभ्याम् ते पुरुषा: हता:
indeed, by both of whom, your people were killed,
निशम्य तत् भोज-पति:
hearing that, Bhoja king
कोपात् प्रचलित-इन्द्रिय:
in anger agitated in mind

He placed Krishna in his own friend's, indeed Nanda's house, where, by both of whom, your people were killed. Hearing that, the king of the Bhojas, Kansa, was angered and agitated in the mind.


निशातमसिमादत्त वसुदेवजिघांसया ।

निवारितो नारदेन तत्सुतौ मृत्युमात्मन: ॥१९॥


निशातम्-असिम्-आदत्त
a sharp sword took
वसुदेव-जिघांसया
Vasudeva to kill
निवारित: नारदेन
stopped by Naarada
तत्-सुतौ मृत्युम्-आत्मन:
his (Vasudeva's) two sons, Death of himself

He took up a sharp edged sword to kill Vasudeva, but was stopped by Naarada, and came to know that Vasudeva's two sons will be the cause of his death.


ज्ञात्वा लोहमयै: पाशैर्बबन्ध सह भार्यया ।

प्रतियाते तु देवर्षौ कंस आभाष्य केशिनम् ॥२०॥


ज्ञात्वा लोहमयै: पाशै:-
coming to know, by iron chains
बबन्ध सह भार्यया
tied with the wife
प्रतियाते तु देवर्षौ
on having returned, indeed, the divine sage Naarada,
कंस: आभाष्य केशिनम्
Kansa called Keshee

Coming to know of the fact, Kansa got Vasudeva tied with iron chains along with his wife. After the divine sage Naarada had gone back, He called Keshee.


प्रेषयामास हन्येतां भवता रामकेशवौ ।

ततो मुष्टिकचाणूरशलतोशलकादिकान् ॥२१॥


प्रेषयामास हन्य-एताम्
sent (them saying) 'Kill these
भवता राम-केशवौ
you, Balaraama and Keshava'
तत: मुष्टिक-चाणूर-
then Mushtika, Chaanoora,
शल-तोशलक-आदिकान्
Shala, Toshalaka and others

Sent him saying, 'you kill these two, Balaraama and Keshava,' then commissioning Mushtika, Chaanoora, Shala, Toshalaka and others,……


अमात्यान् हस्तिपांश्चैव समाहूयाह भोजराट् ।

भो भो निशम्यतामेतद् वीरचाणूरमुष्टिकौ ॥२२॥


अमात्यान् हस्तिपान्-च-एव
the ministers, the elephant keepers and also
समाहूय-आह भोजराट्
calling for, said the Bhoja King
भो भो निशम्यताम्-
'O! O! do hear
एतत् वीर चाणूर-मुष्टिकौ
this O brave! Chaanoora and Mushtika!'

Then calling the ministers and the elephant keepers, the king of Bhoja said, ' O! O! Do listen to this O! brave Chanoora and Mushtika.'


नन्दव्रजे किलासाते सुतावानकदुन्दुभे: ।

रामकृष्णौ ततो मह्यं मृत्यु: किल निदर्शित: ॥२३॥


नन्द-व्रजे किल-आसाते
in Nanda Vraja, indeed,
सुतौ-अनकदुन्दुभे:
are living the sons two of Aanakadundubhi
राम-कृष्णौ तत: मह्यं
Balaraama and Krishna, from that my
मृत्यु: किल निदर्शित:
death indeed is decreed

'In Nanda's Vraja are living the two sons of Aanakadundubhi, (Vasudeva), Balaraama and Krishna, indeed, from them my death is decreed.'


भवद्भ्यामिह सम्प्राप्तौ हन्येतां मल्ललीलया ।

मञ्चा: क्रियन्तां विविधा मल्लरङ्गपरिश्रिता: ।

पौरा जानपदा: सर्वे पश्यन्तु स्वैरसंयुगम् ॥२४॥


भवद्भ्याम्-इह सम्प्राप्तौ
by you two, here, (their) having come,
हन्येताम् मल्ल-लीलया
kill them, through wrestling sport
मञ्चा: क्रियन्ताम् विविधा:
galleries get made (in the amphitheatre), various,
मल्ल-रङ्ग-परिश्रिता:
wrestling arena surrounding
पौरा: जानपदा: सर्वे
the citizens and the country men all
पश्यन्तु स्वैर-संयुगम्
may see the voluntary combat

You two should kill them through the sport of wrestling, when they arrive here. For that get various galleries made in the amphitheatre, surrounding the wrestling arena, so that all the citizens and the country men may see the voluntary combat.


महामात्र त्वया भद्र रङ्गद्वार्युपनीयताम् ।

द्विप: कुवलयापीडो जहि तेन ममाहितौ ॥२५॥


महामात्र त्वया भद्र
'O Keeper of elephants! You, O Blessed One!
रङ्ग-द्वारि-उपनीयताम्
On the amphitheatre gate bring
द्विप: कुवलयापीड:
the elephant Kuvalayaapeeda
जहि तेन मम-अहितौ
kill through him, my (two)enemies

'O Keeper of elephants! O Blessed One! You bring the elephant Kuvalayaapeeda on the gate of the amphitheatre, and through him kill my two enemies.'


आरभ्यतां धनुर्यागश्चतुर्दश्यां यथाविधि ।

विशसन्तु पशून् मेध्यान् भूतराजाय मौढुषे ॥२६॥


आरभ्यताम् धनु:-याग:-
commence a bow-sacrifice
चतुर्दश्याम् यथा-विधि
on the fourteenth with due ceremony
विशसन्तु पशून् मेध्यान्
may be sacrificed animals pure (fit for sacrifice)
भूतराजाय मौढुषे
for Bhoota raaja, (the ancestors) and Shiva

On the fourteenth of the lunar month commence a bow-sacrifice with due ceremony. Pure animals, fit for sacrifice, may be sacrificed to propitiate Bhoota raaja, the lord of the ancestors, and Shiva.


इत्याज्ञाप्यार्थतन्त्रज्ञ आहूय यदुपुङ्गवम् ।

गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिं ततोऽक्रूरमुवाच ह ॥२७॥


इति-आज्ञाप्य-अर्थ-तन्त्र-ज्ञ:
thus ordering, (Kansa) the self interest adept,
आहूय यदु-पुङ्गवम्
calling the Yadu scion
गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिम्
holding in hand (his) hand,
तत:-अक्रूरम्-उवाच ह
then to Akroora said indeed

He Kansa, an adept in fulfilling his self interest, thus ordering his attendents, called upon Akroora, the scion of the Yadus, and holding his hand in own hands, said to him,...


भो भो दानपते मह्यं क्रियतां मैत्रमादृत: ।

नान्यस्त्वत्तो हिततमो विद्यते भोजवृष्णिषु ॥२८॥


भो भो दानपते मह्यम्
'O leader of the charitably disposed! to me
क्रियताम् मैत्रम्-आदृत:
do a (favour) friendly, honoured
न-अन्य:-त्वत्त: हिततम:
not any one more than you benefactor
विद्यते भोज-वृष्णिषु
is present in the Bhojas and Vrishnees'

'O leader of the charitably disposed! Do me a friendly favour, as you are the most honoured and the biggest benefactor than any one in the Bhojas and the Vrishnees.


अतस्त्वामाश्रित: सौम्य कार्यगौरवसाधनम् ।

यथेन्द्रो विष्णुमाश्रित्य स्वार्थमध्यगमद् विभु: ॥२९॥


अत:-त्वाम्-आश्रित: सौम्य
therefore, you depending on, O gentle one!
कार्य-गौरव-साधनम्
the purpose to accomplish as the means
यथा-इन्द्र: विष्णुम्-आश्रित्य
just as, Indra, on Vishnu depending,
स्वार्थम्-अध्यगमद् विभु:
own interest attained the mighty

Therefore, depending on you I seek to accomplish a great purpose, O Gentle One! Just as the mighty Indra, depending on Vishnu attained his purpose of reclaiming the kingdom of the three worlds from Bali.


गच्छ नन्दव्रजं तत्र सुताववानकदुन्दुभे: ।

आसाते ताविहानेन रथेनानय मा चिरम् ॥३०॥


गच्छ नन्द-व्रजम् तत्र
go to Nanda's Vraja, there,
सुतौ-आनकदुन्दुभे:
the two sons of Aanakadundubhi
आसाते तौ-इह-अनेन
live, them both, here, by this
रथेन-आनय मा चिरम्
chariot bring without delay

Go to Nanda's Vraja, there live the two sons of Aanakadundubhi. Take this chariot and on it bring both of them here, without delay.


निसृष्ट: किल मे मृत्युर्देवैर्वैकुण्ठसंश्रयै: ।

तावानय समं गोपैर्नन्दाद्यै: साभ्युपायनै: ॥३१॥


निसृष्ट: किल मे मृत्यु:-
pre-ordained, indeed, my death
र्देवै:-वैकुण्ठ-संश्रयै:
by the gods, in Vishnu's protection,
तौ-आनय समम् गोपै:-
them both bring along with the Gopas
नन्द-आद्यै: साभ्युपायनै:
Nanda and others, with various gifts

Indeed, it is pre-ordained by the gods, who are in Vishnu's protection, that my death is at their hands. Bring them both along with Nanda and other Gopas, with gifts of various kinds.


घातयिष्य इहानीतौ कालकल्पेन हस्तिना ।

यदि मुक्तौ ततो मल्लैर्घातये वैद्युतोपमै: ॥३२॥


घातयिष्ये इह-आनीतौ
will get them killed, here brought
काल-कल्पेन हस्तिना
by Death itself, the elephant
यदि मुक्तौ तत: मल्लै:-
if (they) escape, then, by wrestlers
घातये वैद्युत-उपमै:
will get them killed, thunderbolt like

When they are brought here, I will get them killed by the Death itself like elephant, Kuvalayaapeeda. If they escape from that, I will get them killed by the wrestlers as fierce as thunderbolts.


तयोर्निहतयोस्तप्तान् वसुदेवपुरोगमान् ।

तद्बन्धून् निहनिष्यामि वृष्णिभोजदशार्हकान् ॥३३॥


तयो:-निहतयो:-तप्तान्
they both being killed, the sorrowed
वसुदेव-पुरोगमान्
Vasudeva headed by
तत्-बन्धून् निहनिष्यामि
his people, will kill
वृष्णि-भोज-दशार्हकान्
of the Vrishnee, Bhoja, Dashaarhakas clan

After the two are killed, I will kill the sorrowed Vasudeva heading the Vrishnee, Bhoja, Dashaarhakas clan and his kinsmen.


उग्रसेनं पितरं स्थविरं राज्यकामुकम् ।

तद्भ्रातरं देवकं च ये चान्ये विद्विषो मम ॥३४॥


उग्रसेनम् पितरम् स्थविरम्
Ugrasena, father (mine) aged,
राज्य-कामुकम्
kingdom to usurp keen
तत्-भ्रातरम् देवकम् च
his brother Devaka, and
ये च-अन्ये विद्विष: मम
those and others enemies mine

I will also kill my father the aged Ugrasena, who is keen to usurp the kingdom, his brother, Devaka, and those others who are my enemies.


ततश्चैषा मही मित्र भवित्री नष्टकण्टका ।

जरासन्धो मम गुरुर्द्विविदो दयित: सखा ॥३५॥


तत:-च-एषा मही मित्र
after that, and this earth, O Friend!
भवित्री नष्ट-कण्टका:
Will be rid of thorns
जरासन्ध: मम गुरु:-
Jaraasandha is my preceptor,
द्विविद: दयित: सखा
Dvivida is dear friend

O Friend! And after that, this earth will be rid of thorns. Jaraasandha is my preceptor and Dvivida is my dear friend.


शम्बरो नरको बाणो मय्येव कृतसौहृदा: ।

तैरहं सुरपक्षीयान् हत्वा भोक्ष्ये महीं नृपान् ॥३६॥


शम्बर: नरक: बाण:
Shambara, Naraka, Baana,
मयि-एव कृत-सौहृदा:
in me only, have friendship
तै:-अहम् सुर-पक्षीयान् हत्वा
through them I, the gods' allies will get killed
भोक्ष्ये महीम् नृपान्
enjoy the earth, the kings

Shambara, Naraka, Baana, have friendship with me only. Through them I will get those kings killed, who are the allies of the gods,' and will rule over the whole earth.


एतज्ज्ञात्वाऽऽनय क्षिप्रं रामकृष्णाविहार्भकौ ।

धनुर्मखनिरीक्षार्थं द्रष्टुं यदुपुरश्रियम् ॥३७॥


एतत्-ज्ञात्वा-आनय क्षिप्रम्
this knowing, bring soon,
राम-कृष्णौ-इह-अर्भकौ
Balaraama and Krishna, here the two young boys
धनु:-मख-निरीक्ष-अर्थम्
the bow sacrifice watching for
द्रष्टुम् यदु-पुर-श्रियम्
to see the Yadu's capital city's splendour

Knowing this, go and fetch the two young boys Balaraama and Krishna, soon, with the purpose of watching the bow sacrifice and to see the splendour of Mathura, the capital city of the Yadus.


अक्रूर उवाच -
Akroora said -
राजन् मनीषितं सध्र्यक् तव स्वावद्यमार्जनम् ।

सिद्ध्यसिध्यो: समं कुर्याद् दैवं हि फलसाधनम् ॥३८॥


राजन् मनीषितम् सध्र्यक्
'O King! The decision is good
तव स्व-अवद्य-मार्जनम्
your own unfortitude to remedy
सिद्धि-असिध्यो: समम् कुर्यात्
success, failure equal should understand
दैवम् हि फल-साधनम्
(as) Providence indeed is fruit dispenser

'O King! To remedy your unfortitude, indeed your decision is well thought of. But one must take success and failure with a balanced mind, as, Providence is the dispenser of the fruit of ones actions.


मनोरथान् करोत्युच्चैर्जनो दैवहतानपि ।

युज्यते हर्षशोकाभ्यां तथाप्याज्ञां करोमि ते ॥३९॥


मनोरथान् करोति-उच्चै:-
aspiration entertains high,
जन: दैव-हतान्-अपि
man, by Providence disposed even,
युज्यते हर्ष-शोकाभ्याम्
is engaged in joy and sorrow
तथा-अपि-आज्ञाम् करोमि ते
even then orders will carry out your

A man, even though disposed by Providence, entertains high aspirations, and engages himself in joy and sorrow, even then, I will carry out your order.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवमादिश्य चाक्रूरं मन्त्रिणश्च विसृज्य स: ।

प्रविवेश गृहं कंसस्तथाक्रूर: स्वमालयम् ॥४०॥


एवम्-आदिश्य च-अक्रूरम्
in this manner, instructing and Akroora,
मन्त्रिण:-च विसृज्य स:
the ministers and dispersing, he,
प्रविवेश गृहम् कंस:-
entered the house Kansa,
तथा-अक्रूर: स्वम्-आलयम्
and, Akroora his own house

In this manner, having instructed Akroora, Kansa dispersed the ministers and entered his house and Akroora went away to his own house.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे अक्रूर संप्रेषणम् नाम षट्त्रिंश: अध्याय: ॥३६॥


Thus ends the thirty-sixth discourse entitled 'Kansa despatches Akroora (to Vraja),' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
