राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
बाणस्य तनयामूषामुपयेमे यदूत्तम: ।
तत्र युद्धमभूद् घोरं हरिशङ्करर्योमहत् ।
एतत् सर्वं महायोगिन् समाख्यातुं त्वमर्हसि ॥१॥
बाणस्य तनयाम्-ऊषाम्-
Baana's daughter, Ushaa
उपयेमे यदु-उत्तम:
married the Yadus' foremost (Aniruddha)
तत्र युद्धम्-अभूत् घोरम्
for that, a batlle ensued terrible
हरि-शङ्करयो:-महत्
between Hari and Shankara great
एतत् सर्वम् महायोगिन्
this all, O Great Yogi!
समाख्यातुम् त्वम्-अर्हसि
to explain you are capable of
The foremost of the Yadus', Aniruddha, married Baana's daughter Usha. For that a great and terrible battle ensued between Shree Hari and Shankara. O Great Yogi! Do explain that in detail.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
बाण: पुत्रशतज्येष्ठो बलेरासीन्महात्मन: ।
येन वामनरूपाय हरयेऽदायि मेदिनी ॥२॥
बाण: पुत्र-शत-ज्येष्ठ:
Baana was of the sons hundred the eldest
बले:-आसीत्-महात्मन:
of Bali, the great soul,
येन वामन-रूपाय
by whom to the Vaamana disguised
हरये-अदायि मेदिनी
Shree Hari, gave the earth
Baana was the eldest of the hundred sons of the great soul Bali, by whom the earth was given to Shree Hari disguised as Vaamana.
तस्यौरस: सुतो बाण: शिवभक्तिरत: सदा ।
मान्यो वदान्यो धीमांश्च सत्यसन्धो दृढव्रत: ॥३॥
तस्य-औरस: सुत: बाण:
his natural son Baana
शिव-भक्ति-रत: सदा
in Shiva's devotion engaged always
मान्य: वदान्य:
respected, liberal minded,
धीमान्-च सत्य-सन्ध:
intelligent, and true to his words
दृढ-व्रत:
firm of vows
His, Bali's natural son Baana was always engaged in devotion of Lord Shiva. He was well respected, liberal minded, intelligent, true to his words, and firm of vows.
शोणिताख्ये पुरे रम्ये स राज्यमकरोत् पुरा ।
तस्य शम्भो: प्रसादेन किङ्करा इव तेऽमरा: ।
सहस्रबाहुर्वाद्येन ताण्डवेऽतोषयन्मृडम् ॥४॥

पुरे रम्ये स:
city beautiful, he,
राज्यम्-अकरोत् पुरा
ruled formerly,
तस्य शम्भो: प्रसादेन
his by Shiva's grace
किङ्करा: इव ते-अमरा:
servant like were the gods
सहस्र-बाहु:-वाद्येन
(he) of thousand arms, playing instruments
ताण्डवे-अतोषयत्-मृडम्
during the Tandava (dance) pleased Shiva
Formerly he ruled the beautiful city of Shonitpura. By the grace of Shiva, the gods were like his servants. He having a thousand arms, played with them musical instruments during the tandava dance of Shiva and pleased him.
भगवान् सर्वभूतेश: शरण्यो भक्तवत्सल: ।
वरेणच्छन्दयामास स तं वव्रे पुराधिपम् ॥५॥
भगवान् सर्व-भूतेश:
The Lord, of all beings The Ruler,
शरण्य: भक्त-वत्सल:
the asylum and of the devotees, compassionate
वरेण-छन्दयामास
with a boon, bade him to ask for,
स: तम् वव्रे
he, Him asked for
पुर-अधिपम्
the city's ruler
Lord Shiva, The Ruler of created beings, compassionate to the devotees and an asylum for all, bade him to ask for a boon. He asked Him to be The Ruler of the city.
स एकदाऽऽह गिरिशं पार्श्वस्थं वीर्यदुर्मद: ।
किरीटेनार्कवर्णेन संस्पृशंस्तत्पदाम्बुजम् ॥६॥
स: एकदा-आह

गिरिशम् पार्श्व-स्थम्
to Shiva, near by present
वीर्य-दुर्मद:
with prowess arrogant
किरीटेन-अर्क-वर्णेन
with the crown sun (like) bright
संस्पृशन्-तत्-पद-अम्बुजम्
touching His feet lotus
One day, Baana, arrogant with his prowess, touched the lotus feet of Shiva, present near by, with his sun like bright crown, and said,….
नमस्ये त्वां महादेव लोकानां गुरुमीश्वरम् ।
पुंसामपूर्णकामानां कामपूरामराङ्घ्रिपम् ॥७॥
नमस्ये त्वाम् महादेव
(I) bow to you, O Lord Shiva!
लोकानाम् गुरुम्-ईश्वरम्
of the worlds The Preceptor and Ruler
पुंसाम्-अपूर्ण-कामानाम्
of the men, of unfulfilled desires,
काम-पूर-अमर-अङ्घ्रिपम्
desire fulfilling the celestial tree
I bow to you, O Lord Shiva! The Preceptor and Ruler of the worlds, fulfilling the desires of the men of unfulfilled desires, like the celestial tree.
दो:सहस्रं त्वया दत्तं परं भाराय मेऽभवत् ।
त्रिलोक्यां प्रतियोद्धारं न लभे त्वदृते समम् ॥८॥
दो:-सहस्रम् त्वया दत्तम्
arms thousand, by You given,
परम् भाराय
highly burden
मे-अभवत्
for me have become
त्रिलोक्याम् प्रतियोद्धारम्
in the three worlds a rival
न लभे
did not find
त्वत्-ऋते समम्
You besides, equal
The thousand arms given by You, are becoming a great burden to me. In the three worlds, I do not find an equal rival other than You.
कण्डूत्या निभृतैर्दोर्भिर्युयुत्सुर्दिग्गजानहम् ।
आद्यायां चूर्णयन्नद्रीन् भीतास्तेऽपि प्रदुद्रुवु: ॥९॥
कण्डूत्या निभृतै:-दोर्भि:-
by itching filled arms
युयुत्सु:-दिग्गजान्-
wanting to fight, to the elephants of the quarters,
अहम् आद्यायाम्
I on the way
चूर्णयन्-अद्रीन्
crushing the mountains
भीता:-ते-अपि प्रदुद्रुवु:
in fear they also fled
With my arms full of itching, and wanting to fight, I went to the elephants of the quarters, crushing the mountains on the way. They also fled in fear.
तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान् क्रुद्ध: केतुस्ते भज्यते यदा ।
त्वद्दर्पघ्नं भवेन्मूढ संयुगं मत्समेन ते ॥१०॥
तत्-श्रुत्वा भगवान् क्रुद्ध:
that hearing, The Lord, enraged,
केतु:-ते भज्यते यदा
bearings yours are broken when,
त्वत्-दर्प-घ्नम्
your pride crushing
भवेत्-मूढ संयुगम्
will be, O Foolish One!, encounter
मत्-समेन ते
Me like, your
Hearing that, The Lord was enraged, and said, 'O Foolish One, when your bearings are broken, your encounter will be with one like Me'.
इत्युक्त: कुमतिर्हृष्ट: स्वगृहं प्राविशन्नृप ।
प्रतीक्षन् गिरिशादेशं स्ववीर्यनशनं कुधी: ॥११॥
इति-उक्त:
so told,
कुमति:-हृष्ट:
the dumb minded, pleased
स्व-गृहम् प्राविशत्-
own house entered
नृप
O King!
प्रतीक्षन् गिरिश-आदेशम्
awaiting Lord Shiva's indication,
स्व-वीर्य-नशनम् कुधी:
own prowess destroying, pervert minded
So told, the dumb minded was pleased and retired to his own house. The pervert minded, awaitd the indication of Lord Shiva, which was to destroy his own prowess.
तस्योषा नाम दुहिता स्वप्ने प्राद्युम्निना रतिम् ।
कन्यालभत कान्तेन प्रागदृष्टश्रुतेन सा ॥१२॥
तस्य-ऊषा नाम दुहिता
his Usha named daughter
स्वप्ने प्राद्युम्निना रतिम्
in dream with Pradyumna's son, sexual delight
कन्या-अलभत
the girl attained
कान्तेन प्राक्-
the handsome, before,
अदृष्ट-श्रुतेन सा
not seen, not heard of, she
His daughter named Usha, had, in dream, enjoyed sexual delight with the handsome son of Pradyumna, Aniruddha, whom she had not seen or heard of before.
सा तत्र तमपश्यन्ती क्वासि कान्तेति वादिनी ।
सखीनां मध्य उत्तस्थौ विह्वला व्रीडिता भृशम् ॥१३॥
सा तत्र तम्-अपश्यन्ती
she there, him not seeing,
क्व-असि कान्त-
'where are you dear?'
इति वादिनी
so saying,
सखीनाम् मध्ये उत्तस्थौ
the girl friends in midst of sat up
विह्वला व्रीडिता भृशम्
perturbed and ashamed extremely
On not seeing him there, she called, 'Where are you dear?' and sat up perturbed and extremely ashamed in the midst of her girl companions.
बाणस्य मन्त्री कुम्भाण्डश्चित्रलेखा च तत्सुता ।
सख्यपृच्छत् सखीमूषां कौतूहलसमन्विता ॥१४॥
बाणस्य मन्त्री कुम्भाण्ड:-
Baana's minister Kumbhaanda,
चित्रलेखा च तत्-सुता
Chitralekhaa and his daughter,
सखी-अपृच्छत्
the friend asked,
सखीम्-ऊषाम्
her friend Ushaa
कौतूहल-समन्विता
with wonder struck
Kushmaanda was Baanaa's minister and his daughter was the friend of Ushaa. Struck with wonder she asked her friend ,….
कं त्वं मृगयसे सुभ्रू: कीदृशस्ते मनोरथ: ।
हस्तग्राहं न तेऽद्यापि राजपुत्र्युपलक्षये ॥१५॥
कम् त्वम् मृगयसे
whom you are looking for
सुभ्रू: कीदृश:-
O beautiful browed! What type
ते मनोरथ:
is your longing,
हस्त-ग्राहम्
(your) hand seeker
न ते-अद्य-अपि
not yours till today also
राजपुत्रि-उपलक्षये
O Princess! Is seen
'O Princess of beautiful brows! Whom are you looking for? What is the nature of your longing? Till today I have not seen anyone seeking your hand?'
ऊषा-उवाच -
Ushaa said -
दृष्ट: कश्चिन्नर: स्वप्ने श्याम: कमललोचन: ।
पीतवासा बृहद्बाहुर्योषितां हृदयङ्गम: ॥१६॥
दृष्ट: कश्चित्-नर: स्वप्ने
was seen some man in the dream
श्याम: कमल-लोचन:
dark, lotus eyed,
पीत-वासा:
yellow clothed,
बृहत्-बाहु:
long armed
योषिताम् हृदयम्-गम:
of the women hearts appealing to
A dark handsome man with lotus eyes and long arms, clad in yellow, appealing to the hearts of women, was seen by me in the dream.
तमहं मृगये कान्तं पाययित्वाधरं मधु ।
क्वापि यात: स्पृहयतीं क्षिप्त्वा मां वृजिनार्णवे ॥१७॥
तम्-अहम् मृगये कान्तम्
him, I am looking for, the dear One,
पाययित्वा-अधरम् मधु
making me imbibe the lips' honey
क्व-अपि यात:
somewhere has gone
स्पृहयतीम् क्षिप्त्वा
(me) thirsting flinging
माम् वृजिन-अर्णवे
me in sorrow ocean
I am looking for that dear one, who made me imbibe the honey of his lips, and flinging me, the thirsting, in the ocean of sorrow has gone away somewhere.
चित्रलेखा-उवाच -
Chitralekha said -
व्यसनं तेऽपकर्षामि त्रिलोक्यां यदि भाव्यते ।
तमानेष्ये नरं यस्ते मनोहर्ता तमादिश ॥१८॥
व्यसनम् ते-अपकर्षामि
misery your I will take away
त्रिलोक्याम् यदि भाव्यते
in the three worlds if traced
तम्-आनेष्ये नरम्
him will bring the youth
य:-ते मन:-हर्ता
who your mind has stolen
तम्-आदिश
him describe
I will take away your misery and bring the youth who has stolen your heart, if he is traceable in the three worlds. Describe him to me.
इत्युक्त्वा देवगन्धर्वसिद्धचारण पन्नगान् ।
दैत्यविद्याधरान् यक्षान् मनुजांश्च यथालिखत् ॥१९॥
इति-उक्त्वा
so saying
देव-गन्धर्व-
of the gods, Gandharvas,
सिद्ध-चारण पन्नगान्
Siddhas, Chaarana, Pannagas,
दैत्य-विद्याधरान्
Daityas, Vidyadharas
यक्षान् मनुजान्-च
Yakshas, human beings and
यथा-अलिखत्
close sketches drew
So saying, she drew close sketches of the gods, Gandharvas, Siddhas, Chaarana, Pannagas, Daityas, Vidyadharas, Yakshas and human beings.
मनुजेषु च सा वृष्णीन् शूरमानकदुन्दुभिम् ।
व्यलिखद् रामकृष्णौ च प्रद्युम्नं वीक्ष्य लज्जिता ॥२०॥
मनुजेषु च सा वृष्णीन्
among the men, and she the Vrishnees,
शूरम्-आनकदुन्दुभिम्
Shoora, Aanakadundubhi,
व्यलिखद् राम-कृष्णौ च
drew, Balaraama and Krishna
प्रद्युम्नम् वीक्ष्य लज्जिता
Pradyumna seeing, she was shy
Among the men, the Vrishnees, she drew the sketches of Shoor Vasudeva, Balaraama and Krishna. Seeing the sketch of Pradyumna, Usha was shy.
अनिरुद्धं विलिखितं वीक्ष्योषावाङ्मुखी ह्रिया ।
सोऽसावसाविति प्राह स्मयमाना महीपते ॥२१॥
अनिरुद्धम् विलिखितम्
Aniruddha's portraite
वीक्ष्य-ऊषा-
percieving, Usha
अवाङ्मुखी ह्रिया
with down head, with shame
स:-असौ-असौ-इति प्राह
'he is this, this,' so said,
स्मयमाना
smilingly,
महीपते
O King!
O King! On seeing the portraite of Aniruddha, Usha's face was cast down with shame, and she smilingly said, 'this is he.'
चित्रलेखा तमाज्ञाय पौत्रं कृष्णस्य योगिनी ।
ययौ विहायसा राजन् द्वारकां कृष्णपालिताम् ॥२२॥
चित्रलेखा तम्-आज्ञाय
Chitralekha him recognizing
पौत्रम् कृष्णस्य
as the grandson of Krishna
योगिनी ययौ विहायसा
(she) the yogini went through sky
राजन्
O King!
द्वारकाम् कृष्ण-पालिताम्
to Dwaaraka by Krishna protected
O King! Chitralekah recognized him as the grand-son of Krishna. She, the yogini with mystic powers went to Dwaaraka, protected by Krishna, through the sky way.
तत्र सुप्तं सुपर्यङ्के प्राद्युम्निं योगमास्थिता ।
गृहीत्वा शोणितपुरं सख्यै प्रियमदर्शयत् ॥२३॥
तत्र सुप्तम् सुपर्यङ्के
there, sleeping on a beautiful bed,
प्राद्युम्निम्
Pradyumna's son Aniruddha,
योगम्-आस्थिता
(she) in yoga resorting
गृहीत्वा शोणितपुरं
taook to Shonitapura,
सख्यै प्रियम्-अदर्शयत्
the friend's dear one and showed
Resorting to yoga, she took Pradyumna's son, Aniruddha, who was sleeping on a beautiful bed, to Shonitpura, and showed to her friend her dear one.
सा च तं सुन्दरवरं विलोक्य मुदितानना ।
दुष्प्रेक्ष्ये स्वगृहे पुम्भी रेमे प्राद्युम्निना समम् ॥२४॥
सा च तम्

सुन्दर-वरम् विलोक्य
the beautiful of the most beautiful,
मुदित-आनना
with pleasure enlightened face,
दुष्प्रेक्ष्ये स्व-गृहे पुम्भी
difficult to be seen through, own house, by men,
रेमे प्राद्युम्निना समम्
enjoyed Aniruddha with
Ushaa's face lit up with delight on seeing the beautiful of the most beautiful. She enjoyed with the son of Pradyumna, Aniruddha, in her own chamber, which was difficult to be seen by men.
परार्ध्यवास: स्रग्गन्धधूपदीपासनादिभि: ।
पानभोजनभक्ष्यैश्च वाक्यै: शुश्रुषयार्चित: ॥२५॥
परार्ध्य-वास:
with exclusive garments,
स्रक्-गन्ध-धूप-दीप-
garland, scent, inscence, lamp,
आसन-आदिभि:
proper seat with,
पान-भोजन-भक्ष्यै:-च
with drinks, food edible, and
वाक्यै: शुश्रुषया-अर्चित:
words, service, was worshipped
He enjoyed the service of Ushaa with exclusive garments, garland, scent, inscence, lamp, proper seat, with drinks, food edible, and sweet words.
गूढ: कन्यापुरे शश्वत् प्रवृद्धस्नेहया तया ।
नाहर्गणान् स बुबुधे ऊषयापहृतेन्द्रिय: ॥२६॥
गूढ: कन्या-पुरे
in the discreet girls' chamber
शश्वत् प्रवृद्ध
constantly increasing
स्नेहया तया
love, by her
न-अह:-गणान्
not the days numbers,
स: बुबुधे
he understand
ऊषया-अपहृत-इन्द्रिय:
by Ushaa stolen minded
By remaining in the discreet chamber of the girls, and with the constantly increasing love and care of Usha, his mind stolen by her, he was not aware of the number of days that passed.
तां तथा यदुवीरेण भुज्यमानां हतव्रताम् ।
हेतुभिर्लक्षयाञ्चक्रुराप्रीतां दुरवच्छदै: ॥२७॥
ताम् तथा यदु-वीरेण
her, thus by the Yadu's hero
भुज्यमानाम्
being enjoyed,
हत-व्रताम्
lost her vow (of virginity)
हेतुभि:-लक्षयान्-चक्रु:-
by the marks, indications gave
आप्रीताम् दुरवच्छदै:
in love unconcealable
Thus, she was secretly being enjoyed by the hero of the Yadu's, and her being in love was well noticed by the unconcealable marks, and that she had lost her vow of virginity.
भटा आवेदयाञ्चक्रू राजंस्ते दुहितुर्वयम् ।
विचेष्टितं लक्षयाम: कन्याया: कुलदूषणम् ॥२८॥
भटा: आवेदयान्-चक्रू:
the attendents reports gave
राजन्-ते दुहितु:-वयम्
'O King! Of your daughter, we,
विचेष्टितम् लक्षयाम:
activities notice,
कन्याया: कुल-दूषणम्
of the girl, the family's deporting
The attendents reported to Baana, 'O King! We have noticed the activities of your daughter, which for a girl are detrimental to the honour of the family.'
अनपायिभिरस्माभिर्गुप्तायाश्च गृहे प्रभो ।
कन्याया दूषणं पुम्भिर्दुष्प्रेक्षाया न विद्महे ॥२९॥
अनपायिभि:-अस्माभि:-
by constant our vigilance,
गुप्ताया:-च गृहे प्रभो
and secret being the chamber, O Lord!
कन्याया: दूषणम्
the girl's disgrace,
पुम्भि:-दुष्प्रेक्षाया:
by men difficult to be seen
न विद्महे
do not know
O Lord! We do not know how, inspite of our constant vigilence and the chamber being difficult to be seen by men, the girl was disgraced?'
तत: प्रव्यथितो बाणो दुहितु: श्रुतदूषण: ।
त्वरित: कन्यकागारं प्राप्तोऽद्राक्षीद् यदूद्वहम् ॥३०॥

Baana, of the daughter

hearing disgrace,
त्वरित: कन्यका-आगारम्
quickly to the girls' chamber
प्राप्त:-अद्राक्षीदत्
reached, and saw
यदु-उद्वहम्
the Yadu's scion
Baana, very distressed on hearing of his daughter's disgrace, quickly went to the girls' chamber, and reaching there saw the scion of the Yadus.
कामात्मजं तं भुवनैकसुन्दरं श्यामं पिशङ्गाम्बरमम्बुजेक्षणम् ।
बृहद्भुजं कुण्डलकुन्तलत्विषा स्मितावलोकेन च मण्डिताननम् ॥३१॥
काम-आत्मजम् तम्
Cupid's son, him,
भुवन-एक-सुन्दरम् श्यामम्
of the worlds' the one beautiful, dark,
पिशङ्ग-अम्बरम्-
in yellow clad
अम्बुज-ईक्षणम्
lotus eyed,
बृहत्-भुजम्
long armed,
कुण्डल-कुन्तल-त्विषा
with the earings and curls' lustre
स्मित-अवलोकेन च
smiling glances and,
मण्डित-आननम्
decorated face
He, Aniruddha, the son of Cupid, the one beautiful in the three worlds, dark, clad in yellow, lotus eyed. Long armed, his face adornd with ear-rings and smiling glances, …..
दीव्यन्तमक्षै: प्रिययाभिनृम्णया तदङ्गसङ्गस्तनकुङ्कुमस्रजम् ।
बाह्वोर्दधानं मधुमल्लिकाश्रितां तस्याग्र आसीनमवेक्ष्य विस्मित: ॥३२॥
दीव्यन्तम्-अक्षै:
playing dice
प्रियया-अभिनृम्णया
with the beloved, well decked
तत्-अङ्ग-सङ्ग-स्तन-
by her body touching, breasts'
कुङ्कुम-स्रजम्
saffron tainted, garland
बाह्वो:-दधानम्
in the arms wearing
मधु-मल्लिका-श्रिताम्
with sweet jasmine made
तस्या-अग्रे आसीनम्-
in her front sitting
अवेक्ष्य विस्मित:
percieving, was astonished
Baanaasura was astonished to see him sitting in front of his well decked beloved, having a garland of jasmine flowers in his arms, tainted by the saffron of her breasts and the touch of her body, and, playing the game of dice with her.
स तं प्रविष्टं वृतमाततायिभिर्भटैरनीकैरवलोक्य माधव: ।
उद्यम्य मौर्वं परिघं व्यवस्थितो यथान्तको दण्डधरो जिघांसया ॥३३॥
स: तम् प्रविष्टम्
he, (Aniruddha) him entered

surrounded by enemies, attendents,
अनीकै:-अवलोक्य माधव:
armyies, percieving, Maadhava,
उद्यम्य मौर्वम्
uplifting the bow and
परिघम् व्यवस्थित:
bludgeon firmly
यथा-अन्तक:
like Death (Yama)
दण्डधर: जिघांसया
rod holding, ready to kill
Maadhava, Aniruddha saw him entering surrounded with enemies, attendents and armies. He took up his bow and the buldgeon firmly, like Yama taking up his rod, to kill.
जिघृक्षया तान् परित: प्रसर्पत: शुनो यथा सूकरयूथपोऽहनत् ।
ते हन्यमाना भवनाद् विनिर्गता निर्भिन्नमूर्धोरुभुजा: प्रदुद्रुवु: ॥३४॥
जिघृक्षया तान्
catching hold of them,
परित: प्रसर्पत:
from all sides attacking,
शुन: यथा सूकर-
a dog, like the boars'
यूथप:-अहनत्
leader, would kill,
ते हन्यमाना:
they being beaten,
भवनात् विनिर्गता:
from the chamber went
निर्भिन्न-मूर्ध-
broken heads,
उरु-भुजा: प्रदुद्रुवु:
thighs, arms, fled
Catching hold of them, who were attacking from all sides, he would have killed them, like the leader of the boars kills the dogs, when they went out of the chamber and fled with broken heads, thighs and arms.
तं नागपाशैर्बलिनन्दनो बली घ्नन्तं स्वसैन्यं कुपितो बबन्ध ह ।
ऊषा भृशं शोकविषादविह्वला बद्धं निशम्याश्रुकलाक्ष्यरौदिषीत् ॥३५॥
तम् नाग-पाशै:-

बलिनन्दनो: बली
Bali's son, Baanaasura, the mighty
घ्नन्तम् स्वसैन्यम्
killing his army
कुपित: बबन्ध ह
enraged, tied indeed,
ऊषा भृशम् शोक-
Ushaa was greatly with sorrow
विषाद-विह्वला
and grief overwhelmed
बद्धम् निशम्य-
the tied seeing

Bali's son Baanaasura was enraged, and tied him, who was killing the army, with snake snares. Usha seeing him thus tied, was overwhelmed with grief and sorrow and wailed with tears streaming eyes.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां
