श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एकदोपवनं राजन् जग्मुर्यदुकुमारका: ।

विहर्तुं साम्बप्रद्युम्नचारुभानुगदादय: ॥१॥


एकदा-उपवनम्
one day to the garden
राजन्
O King!
जग्मु:-यदु-कुमारका:
went the Yadu princes,
विहर्तुम् साम्ब-प्रद्युम्न-
to play, Saamba, Pradyumna,
चारु-भानु-गद-आदय:
Chaaru, Bhaanu, Gada, and others

O King! One day, Saamba, Pradyumna, Chaaru, Bhaanu, Gada, and other Yadu princes went to the garden to play.


क्रीडित्वा सुचिरं तत्र विचिन्वन्त: पिपासिता: ।

जलं निरुदके कूपे ददृशु: सत्त्वमद्भुतम् ॥२॥


क्रीडित्वा सुचिरम् तत्र
having played for long there,
विचिन्वन्त: पिपासिता:
looking for, thirsty,
जलम् निरुदके कूपे
water, in the wter-less well
ददृशु: सत्त्वम्-अद्भुतम्
saw a being strange

They played there for long. Thirsty and looking for water, in the water-less well they saw a strange being.


कृकलासं गिरिनिभं वीक्ष्य विस्मितमानसा: ।

तस्य चोद्धरणे यत्नं चक्रुस्ते कृपयान्विता: ॥३॥


कृकलासम् गिरि-निभम्
a chemould, mountain like,
वीक्ष्य विस्मित-मानसा:
seeing, perturbed minded,
तस्य च-उद्धरणे
his and rescue
यत्नम् चक्रु:-ते
effort took they
कृपया-अन्विता:
by compassion caught

There they saw a mountain like chemould, and were perturbed to see it. Bound by compassion, they took effort to rescue it.


चर्मजैस्तान्तवै: पाशैर्बद्ध्वा पतितमर्भका: ।

नाशक्नुवन् समुद्धर्तुं कृष्णायाचख्युरुत्सुका: ॥४॥


चर्मजै:-तान्तवै:
of leather and fiber made
पाशै:-बद्ध्वा
ropes with tying
पतितम्-अर्भका:
the fallen, the boys,
न-अशक्नुवन् समुद्धर्तुम्
were able to bring up
कृष्णाय-आचख्यु:-उत्सुका:
to Krishna reported anxciously

When the boys were not able to bring out the fallen creature, even by tying it with leather and fiber ropes, they anxciously reported the matter to Krishna.


तत्रागत्यारविन्दाक्षो भगवान् विश्वभावन: ।

वीक्ष्योज्जहार वामेन तं करेण स लीलया ॥५॥


तत्र-आगत्य-
there having come,
अरविन्द-अक्ष: भगवान्
the lotus-eyed Lord
विश्व-भावन:
of the universe The Protector,
वीक्ष्य-उज्जहार
beholding, brought out
वामेन तम् करेण
with left, it, hand
स: लीलया
He sportingly

Coming there, The lotus-eyed Lord, The Protector of the universe, beholding it, sportingly brought it out with His left hand.


स उत्तमश्लोककराभिमृष्टो विहाय सद्य: कृकलासरूपम् ।

सन्तप्तचामीकरचारुवर्ण: स्वर्ग्यद्भुतालङ्करणाम्बरस्रक् ॥६॥


स: उत्तम-श्लोक-
he, by The Well Sung of Lord,
कर-अभिमृष्ट:
hand touched,
विहाय सद्य:
cast off instantly
कृकलास-रूपम्
the chameleon form
सन्तप्त-चामीकर
molten gold like
चारु-वर्ण: स्वर्गी-
good hue, celestial (being)
अद्भुत-अलङ्करण-
wonderful, well ornamented
अम्बर-स्रक्
well dressed and garlanded

As the creature was touched by the hand of The Well-sung of Lord, he cast off his form of a chameleon and became a celestial being with a molten gloden hue, well adorned with ornaments and garlands decorated.


पप्रच्छविद्वानपि तन्निदानं जनेषु विख्यायितुं मुकुन्द: ।

कस्त्वं महाभागवरेण्यरूपो देवोत्तमं त्वां गणयामि नूनम् ॥७॥


पप्रच्छ-विद्वान्-अपि
asked knowing though
तत्-निदानम्
of that the cause
जनेषु विख्यायितुम्
for the people to be known
मुकुन्द:
Mukunda (Krishna)
क:-त्वम् महाभाग
who are you, blessed one
वरेण्य-रूप: देव-उत्तमम्
of brilliant form, of the gods the great
त्वाम् गणयामि नूनम्
you (I) consider surely

Though Himself knowing, Mukunda, Krishna asked him the cause fo his having become a chameleon, for the people to know. 'Who are you O blessed one? With this brilliant form, I surely consider you to be a great god.'


दशामिमां वा कतमेन कर्मणा सम्प्रापितोऽस्यतदर्ह: सुभद्र ।

आत्मानमाख्याहि विवित्सतां नो यन्मन्यसे न: क्षममत्र वक्तुम् ॥८॥


दशाम्-इमाम् वा
condition this or,
कतमेन कर्मणा
by what action
सम्प्रापित:-असि-
come to
अतत्-अर्ह: सुभद्र
not this deserving, O High souled,
आत्मानम्-आख्याहि
yourself about say
विवित्सताम् नो:
eager to know us,
यत्-मन्यसे न:
if consider us
क्षमम्-अत्र वक्तुम्
capable here to be told

O High souled one! By what action did you come to this condition, which you do not deserve. Do tell about yourself to us who are keen to know, also if you consider us capable to be told here.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति स्म राजा सम्पृष्ट: कृष्णेनानन्तमूर्तिना ।

माधवं प्रणिपत्याह किरीटेनार्कवर्चसा ॥९॥


इति स्म राजा
thus was the king
सम्पृष्ट: कृष्णेन-
asked by Krishna,
अनन्त-मूर्तिना
of endless forms,
माधवम् प्रणिपत्य-आह
to Maadhava, bowing, said,
किरीटेन-अर्क-वर्चसा
by the crown with sun like brilliance

Thus the king was asked by Krishna of endless forms. He bowed to Maadhava with his crown of sun like brilliance and said,….


नृग उवाच -
Nriga said -
नृगो नाम नरेन्द्रोऽहमिक्ष्वाकुतनय: प्रभो ।

दानिष्वाख्यायमानेषु यदि ते कर्णमस्पृशम् ॥१०॥


नृग: नाम नरेन्द्र:-अहम्-
Nriga named king I am
इक्ष्वाकु-तनय: प्रभो
of Ikshvaaku the son, O Lord!
दानिषु-आख्यायमानेषु
among the donors mentioned
यदि ते कर्णम्-अस्पृशम्
if your ear touched

I am the king Nriga by name and I am the son of the Ikshvakoos. Among the names of the donors mentioned, You may have heard my name.


किं नु तेऽविदितं नाथ सर्वभूतात्मसाक्षिण: ।

कालेनाव्याहतदृशो वक्ष्येऽथापि तवाज्ञया ॥११॥


किम् नु ते-अविदितम्
what indeed to You is unknown
नाथ
O Master!
सर्व-भूत-आत्म-साक्षिण:
of all the beings soul The Witness,
कालेन-अव्याहत-दृश:
by Time unobstructed vision
वक्ष्ये-अथ-अपि
will say then also
तव-आज्ञया
by Your order

O Master! What indeed is unknown to You, The Witness of the souls of all beings, Whose vision is unobstructed by Time. Yet, ordered by You, I will tell You.


यावत्य: सिकता भूमेर्यावत्यो दिवि तारका: ।

यावत्यो वर्षधाराश्च तावतीरददां स्म गा: ॥१२॥


यावत्य: सिकता: भूमे:-
as many are particles of earth,
यावत्य: दिवि तारका:
as are in the heaven stars,
यावत्य: वर्ष-धारा:-च
as are rain drops, and,
तावती:-अददाम् स्म गा:
that many had given cows

I had given as many cows as there are particles of sand on earth, and as many as there are stars in the heaven and as many drops there are of rain.


पयस्विनीस्तरुणी: शीलरूपगुणोपपन्ना: कपिला हेमशृङ्गी: ।

न्यायार्जिता रूप्यखुरा: सवत्सा दुकूलमालाभरणा ददावहम् ॥१३॥


पयस्विनी:-तरुणी:
milch, young,
शील-रूप-गुण-उपपन्ना:
soft natured, good looking, of good breed,
कपिला: हेम-शृङ्गी:
twany, golden horned,
न्याय-अर्जिता:
by virtuous earning got,
रूप्य-खुरा: स-वत्सा
silver hoofs, and with calves,
दुकूल-माला-आभरणा:
cloth and garlands decorated,
ददौ-अहम्
gave I

I gave young milch cows, soft natured, good looking and of good breed, twany, with gold plated horns and silver plated hoofs, having their calves with them, all of them attained by virtuous earnings, and decorated with silk and garlands.


स्वलङ्कृतेभ्यो गुणशीलवद्भ्य: सीदत्कुटुम्बेभ्य ऋतव्रतेभ्य: ।

तप:श्रुतब्रह्मवदान्यसद्भ्य: प्रादां युवभ्यो द्विजपुङ्गवेभ्य: ॥१४॥


स्वलङ्कृतेभ्य:
to the adorned
गुण-शील-वद्भ्य:
virtues and soft nature having
सीदत्-कुटुम्बेभ्य:
having problems in family,
ऋत-व्रतेभ्य:
truth and vows observing
तप:श्रुत-ब्रह्म-वदान्य:
austerities, scriptures, Vedas knowing,
सद्भ्य: प्रादाम्
even minded, gave
युवभ्य: द्विज-पुङ्गवेभ्य:
to the young Braahmins of noble qualities

I gave the cows to the well adorned, even minded young Braahmins of noble qualities, having soft nature and virtues, whose families were having problems, who observed vows and austerities and truth, and had the knowledge of scriptures and Vedas.


गोभूहिरण्यायतनाश्वहस्तिन: कन्या: सदासीस्तिलरूप्यशय्या: ।

वासांसि रत्नानि परिच्छदान् रथानिष्टं च यज्ञैश्चरितं च पूर्तम् ॥१५॥


गो-भू-हिरण्य-आयतन-
cows, land, gold, houses,
अश्व-हस्तिन: कन्या:
horses, elephants, girls
स-दासी:-तिल-
with maid servants, sesum seeds,
रूप्य-शय्या: वासांसि
silver, beds, cloathes,
रत्नानि परिच्छदान् रथानि
jewels, domestic materials, chariots,
इष्टम् च यज्ञै:-
performed and sacrifices,
चरितम् च पूर्तम्
and did many charitable works

I also gave cows, land, gold, houses, horses, elephants, girls with maid servants, sesum seeds, silver, beds, cloathes, jewels, domestic materials, chariots, and also performed sacrifices and did charitable works for the good of the people.


कस्यचिद् द्विजमुख्यस्य भ्रष्टा गौर्मम गोधने ।

सम्पृक्ताविदुषा सा च मया दत्ता द्विजातये ॥१६॥


कस्यचिद् द्विज-मुख्यस्य
of some Braahmin holy,
भ्रष्टा गौ:-
astray cow
मम गोधने
in my cattle
सम्पृक्ता-अविदुषा सा
mingled, unknowingly, she,
सा च मया दत्ता
she and by me was given
द्विजातये
to (another) Braahmin

One cow of a holy Braahmin, went astray and unknowingly mingled with my cattle. And I gave her away to another Braahmin.


तां नीयमानां तत्स्वामी दृष्ट्वोवाच ममेति तम् ।

ममेति प्रतिग्राह्याह नृगो मे दत्तवानिति ॥१७॥


ताम् नीयमानाम्
her, (the cow) taking
तत्-स्वामी दृष्ट्वा-
her master seeing
उवाच मम-इति तम्
said, mine it is, to him,
मम-इति प्रतिग्राह्य-आह
mine it is, taking back said,
नृग: मे दत्तवान्-इति
Nriga to me gave, thus

The cow's master seeing her being taken, said to him, 'It is mine'. He taking her back said, 'It is mine as Nriga has given it to me.'


विप्रौ विवदमानौ मामूचतु: स्वार्थसाधकौ ।

भवान् दातापहर्तेति तच्छ्रुत्वा मेऽभवद् भ्रम: ॥१८॥


विप्रौ विवदमानौ
the Braahmins arguing,
माम्-ऊचतु:
to me said,
स्वार्थ-साधकौ
own interest protecting,
भवान् दाता-पहर्ता-
you are the giver, and the steeler,
इति-तत्-श्रुत्वा
this, that hearing,
मे-अभवद् भ्रम:
to me became confusion

As the Braahmins argued, they came to me with the matter, to protect each his self interest. One said, 'You gave it to me,' the other said, 'In that case you are a steeler' thus. By that I was confused.


अनुनीतावुभौ विप्रौ धर्मकृच्छ्रगतेन वै ।

गवां लक्षं प्रकृष्टानां दास्याम्येषा प्रदीयताम् ॥१९॥


अनुनीतौ-उभौ विप्रौ
requested both the Braahmins,
धर्म-कृच्छ्र-गतेन वै
righteousness obscured getting
गवाम् लक्षम् प्रकृष्टानाम्
cows one lakh of high quality
दास्यामि-एषा प्रदीयताम्
will give, this give to me

Finding the righteousness getting obscured, I request to both the Braahmins, to give me that cow, and that I will give them a lakh of cows of good quality.


भवन्तावनुगृह्णीतां किङ्करस्याविजानत: ।

समुद्धरत मां कृच्छ्रात् पतन्तं निरयेऽशुचौ ॥२०॥


भवन्तौ-अनुगृह्णीताम्
both of you oblige me,
किङ्करस्य-अविजानत:
of the servant's unknowingly
समुद्धरत माम्
save me
कृच्छ्रात् पतन्तम्
from the painful falling
निरये-अशुचौ
in the hell dirty

Oblige and forgive this servant, this mistake committed unknowingly, and save me from falling in the painful dirty hell.


नाहं प्रतीच्छे वै राजन्नित्युक्त्वा स्वाम्यपाक्रमत् ।

नान्यद् गवामप्ययुतमिच्छामीत्यपरो ययौ ॥२१॥


न-अहम् प्रतीच्छे वै
not I will exchange inded,
राजन्-इति-उक्त्वा
O King! So saying
स्वामी-अपाक्रमत्
the master went away
न-अन्यत् गवाम्-अपि-
not another cow even
अयुतम्-इच्छामि-
a lakh I want
इति-अपर: ययौ
so (saying) the other one went away

The master of the cow said, O King! I will not exchange the cow for any other,' and went away. The other one also said, 'I will not take any other cow, be it a lakh of them', and so saying he also went away.


एतस्मिन्नन्तरे याम्यैर्दूतैर्नीतो यमक्षयम् ।

यमेन पृष्टस्तत्राहं देवदेव जगत्पते ॥२२॥


एतस्मिन्-अन्तरे
in the meanwhile,
याम्यै:-दूतै:-नीत:
by Yama's messangers was taken (I)
यमक्षयम्
to Yama's abode
यमेन पृष्ट:-तत्र-अहम्
by Yama, was asked there I
देवदेव जगत्पते
O Lord of the Gods! O of the universe The Ruler

O Lord of the Gods! O Ruler of the universe! In the meanwhile, on my death, I was taken to Yama's abode by the mssangers of Yama. There Yama asked me,….


पूर्वं त्वमशुभं भुङ्क्षे उताहो नृपते शुभम् ।

नान्तं दानस्य धर्मस्य पश्ये लोकस्य भास्वत: ॥२३||


पूर्वम् त्वम्-अशुभम् भुङ्क्षे
first you the evils will experience
उत्-आहो नृपते शुभम्
or O King the merits
न-अन्तम् दानस्य धर्मस्य
no end of charity and righteousness
पश्ये लोकस्य भास्वत:
I see of the world glorious

O King! Will you first like to experience the fruit of your evil deeds. As I see no end to your charity and righteous deeds and so to your glorious world, awaiting you.


पूर्वं देवाशुभं भुञ्ज इति प्राह पतेति स: ।

तावदद्राक्षमात्मानं कृकलासं पतन् प्रभो ॥२४॥


पूर्वम् देव-अशुभम् भुञ्ज
first, O Great One! Evil will experience
इति प्राह
this said (I)
पत-इति स:
fall' this he (said)
तावत्-अद्राक्षम्-आत्मानम्
then saw myself
कृकलासम् पतन्
chameleon form falling
प्रभो
O Mighty Lord!

I answered, 'O Great One! I will first experience the fruit of my evil deed.' 'Fall then,' he said. Then I saw myself falling in the form of a chameleon, O Mighty Lord!'


ब्रह्मण्यस्य वदान्यस्य तव दासस्य केशव ।

स्मृतिर्नाद्यापि विध्वस्ता भवत्सन्दर्शनार्थिन: ॥२५॥


ब्रह्मण्यस्य
servant of the Braahmins
वदान्यस्य
charity minded,
तव दासस्य
of Your servant
केशव
O Keshava!
स्मृति:-न-
memory did not
अद्य-अपि विध्वस्ता
today also lost
भवत्-सन्दर्शन-अर्थिन:
Your vision craving

O Keshava! The memory of this charity minded servant of Your's and the Braahmins, was not lost, because he craved for Your vision.


स त्वं कथं मम विभोऽक्षिपथ: परात्मा योगेश्वरै: श्रुतिदृशामलहृद्विभाव्य: ।

साक्षादधोक्षज उरुव्यसनान्धबुद्धे स्यान्मेऽनुदृश्य इह यस्य भवापवर्ग: ॥२६॥


स: त्वम् कथम्
That You, how
मम विभो-अक्षि-पथ:
in my O Mighty Lord! Of the eyes path
पर-अत्मा योग-ईश्वरै:
The Supreme Self, by the yoga masters
श्रुति-दृशाम्-अमलहृद्-विभाव्य:
by the Vedas and pure hearted realized
साक्षात्-अधोक्षज
directly, O Master of the Senses!
उरु-व्यसन-अन्ध-बुद्धे:
by many sufferings blinded reasoning,
स्यात्-मे-अनुदृश्य:
comes to my vision,
इह यस्य भव-अपवर्ग:
here, whose from universe liberation is due

That, You O Mighty Lord! Who are realized only by the pure hearted Yoga masters and the Vedas, how have You come directly in the path of the vision of my eyes? O Master of the Senses! Because of many sufferings my reason is blinded. Moreover, here, in this world, only they get to have Your vision whose liberation is due.


देवदेव जगन्नाथ गोविन्द पुरुषोत्तम ।

नारायण हृषीकेश पुण्यश्लोकाच्युताव्यय ॥२७॥


देव-देव जगत्-नाथ
O Lord of the gods!, of the world The Ruler!
गोविन्द पुरुष-उत्तम
Govinda, The Person Supreme!
नारायण हृषीकेश
Naaraayana, Controller of the senses!
पुण्यश्लोक-
O Lord of Pure fame!
अच्युत-अव्यय
Infalliable, Undecaying Lord!

O Lord of the gods!, of the world The Ruler! Govinda, The Person Supreme! Naaraayana, Controller of the senses! O Lord of Pure fame! Infalliable, Undecaying Lord!


अनुजानीहि मां कृष्ण यान्तं देवगतिं प्रभो ।

यत्र क्वापि सतश्चेतो भूयान्मे त्वत्पदास्पदम् ॥२८॥


अनुजानीहि माम्
leave give me
कृष्ण यान्तम् देव-गतिम्
O Krishan! Going to the celestial abode
प्रभो
O Mighty Lord!
यत्र क्व-अपि सत:-
where ever also may (I) be
चेत: भूयात्-मे
consciousness may be mine
त्वत्-पद-आस्पदम्
in Your feet attached

O Krishna! give me leave as I go to the celestial abode. O Mighty Lord! Also, where ever I may be, may my consciousness be always attached to Your feet.


नमस्ते सर्वभावाय ब्रह्मणेऽनन्तशक्तये ।

कृष्णाय वासुदेवाय योगानां पतये नम: ॥२९॥


नमस्ते सर्व-भावाय
salutations to of all The Creator,
ब्रह्मणे-अनन्त-शक्तये
to Brahman, to The undiminished Powerful!
कृष्णाय वासुदेवाय
to Krishna! To Vaasudeva!
योगानाम् पतये नम:
of the Yogas TheMaster! I bow

Salutation to The Creator of All! To Brahman, to You of undiminished power, to Krishna, to Vaasudeva, to The Master of the Yogas, I bow.


इत्युक्त्वा तं परिक्रम्य पादौ स्पृष्ट्वा स्वमौलिना ।

अनुज्ञातो विमानाग्र्यमारुहत् पश्यतां नृणाम् ॥३०॥

अनुज्ञातो विमानाग्र्यमारुहत् पश्यतां नृणाम् ॥३०॥


इति-उक्त्वा
so saying,
तम् परिक्रम्य
Him circumbulating
पादौ स्पृष्ट्वा
the feet touching
स्व-मौलिना
with his own forehead
अनुज्ञात:
with permission
विमान-अग्र्यम्-आरुहत्
in the aerial car's front mounted
पश्यताम् नृणाम्
as looked on the people

So saying, he circumbulated Him, touched His feet with his own forehead, taking His permission, mounted in the front of the aerial car, as the people looked on.


कृष्ण: परिजनं प्राह भगवान्देवकीसुत: ।

ब्रह्मण्यदेवो धर्मात्मा राजन्याननुशिक्षयन् ॥३१॥


कृष्ण: परिजनम् प्राह
Krishna to His people said
भगवान्-देवकी-सुत:
The Lord, Devaki's son,
ब्रह्मण्य-देव:
of the Braahmins The Lover,
धर्मात्मा
The virtuous Soul
राजन्यान्-अनुशिक्षयन्
to the Kshatriyas giving instruction

The Lord Krishna, Devaki's son, The Lover of the Braahmins, The virtuous Soul, saaid to His own People, with an intention to instruct the Kshatriyas.


दुर्जरं बत ब्रह्मस्वं भुक्तमग्नेर्मनागपि ।

तेजीयसोऽपि किमुत् राज्ञामीश्वरमानिनाम् ॥३२॥


दुर्जरम् बत ब्रह्मस्वम्
undigestible, indeed is a Braahmin's (wealth)
भुक्तम्-अग्ने:-
enjoyed, by Fire
मनाक्-अपि
even a bit
तेजीयस:-अपि
by a powerful one also
किमुत् राज्ञाम्-
what of the kings
ईश्वर-मानिनाम्
Rulers considering

Even a bit of wealth of a Braahmin, when misappropriated by even a powerful person like the Fire, is indigestible, what of the kings who arrogantly consider themselves the rulers.


नाहं हालाहलं मन्ये विषं यस्य प्रतिक्रिया ।

ब्रह्मस्वं हि विषं प्रोक्तं नास्य प्रतिविधिर्भुवि ॥३३॥


न-अहम् हालाहलम्
not I the deadly poison
मन्ये विषम्
consider poison
यस्य प्रतिक्रिया
of which is an antidote
ब्रह्मस्वम् हि
Braahmin's wealth only
प्रोक्तम् न-अस्य
is said to be, not its
प्रतिविधि:-भुवि
treatment on earth

I do not consider the deadliest poison to be a poison, as it has an antidote. Only a Braahmin's wealth when misappropriated is said to be poison, as it has no treatment on this earth.


हिनस्ति विषमत्तारं वह्निरद्भि: प्रशाम्यति ।

कुलं समूलं दहति ब्रह्मस्वारणिपावक: ॥३४॥


हिनस्ति विषम्-अत्तारम्
kills the poison the eater
वह्नि:-अद्भि:
fire by water
प्रशाम्यति
is put out
कुलम् समूलम् दहति
the family from the root burns up
ब्रह्मस्व-
Braahmin's misappropriated wealth
अरणि-पावक:
like the wood with ingrained fire

Poison kills the one who swallows it. Fire is put out by water. But a family is burnt to the roots, (destroyed) by the misappropriated wealth of a Braahmin, like the wood with ingrained fire.


ब्रह्मस्वं दुरनुज्ञातम् भुक्तं हन्तित्रिपूरुषम् ।

प्रसह्य तु बलाद् भुक्तं दश पूर्वान् दशापरान् ॥३५॥


ब्रह्मस्वम् दु:अनुज्ञातम्
Braahmin's wealth, unpermitted,
भुक्तम् हन्ति-त्रि-पूरुषम्
enjoyed, destroys three generations
प्रसह्य तु
wilfully, indeed
बलाद् भुक्तम्
forcibly enjoyed,
दश पूर्वान् दश-अपरान्
ten generation previous, and ten later

A person's three generations, one former second himself, and the one later, the third is indeed destroyed, if he enjoys a Braahmin's wealth without permision. And if a Braahmin's wealth is enjoyed wilfully and forcibly, ten previous generations, his own and ten later generations are ruined.


राजानो राजलक्ष्म्यान्धा नात्मपातं विचक्षते ।

निरयं येऽभिमन्यन्ते ब्रह्मस्वं साधु बालिशा: ॥३६॥


राजान: राज-लक्ष्मी-अन्धा:
the kings by royal wealth blinded,
न-आत्म-पातम् विचक्षते
do not themselves fall see,
निरयम् ये-अभिमन्यन्ते
to the hell who, snatch
ब्रह्मस्वम् साधु
Braahmi's wealth, good,
बालिशा:
the stupid

The stupid kings, blinded by the royal fortune, do not see themselves having a good fall in the hell by snatching the wealth of the Braahmins.


गृह्णन्ति यावत: पांसून् क्रन्दतामश्रुबिन्दव: ।

विप्राणां हृतवृत्तीनां वदान्यानां कुटुम्बिनाम् ॥३७॥


गृह्णन्ति यावत:
damoened as many
पांसून् क्रन्दताम्-
sand particles of the crying
अश्रु-बिन्दव:
tear drops
विप्राणाम् हृत-वृत्तीनाम्
Braahmin's deprived earnings
वदान्यानाम् कुटुम्बिनाम्
liberal minded family having

For as many (years) as the sand particles are dampened by the tear drops of the liberal minded crying Braahmins with large family, who are deprived of their wealth and earnings.


राजानो राजकुल्याश्च तावतोऽब्दान्निरङ्कुशा: ।

कुम्भीपाकेषु पच्यन्ते ब्रह्मदायापहारिण: ॥३८॥


राजान: राज-कुल्या:-च
the kings and the royal descendents,
तावत:-अब्दानि-
for those many years,
निरङ्कुशा:
the despotic
कुम्भी-पाकेषु पच्यन्ते
in oil coldrons are fried
ब्रह्म-दाय-अपहारिण:
Braahmin's wealth snatchers

The despotic rulers and their descendents are fried in the oil coldrons for as many years for having snatched the wealth of the Braahmins.


स्वदत्तं परदत्तं वा ब्रह्मवृत्तिं हरेच्चय: ।

षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विष्ठायां जायते कृमि: ॥३९॥


स्व-दत्तम् पर-दत्तम् वा
by self given, by another given or
ब्रह्म-वृत्तिम्
Braahmin's earnings
हरेत्-च-य:
takes away and who
षष्टि-वर्ष-सहस्राणि
sixty years thousands
विष्ठायाम् जायते कृमि:
in the foeses is born a worm

He who snatches the earnings of a Braahmin, be it given by himself or by some one else, he is born as a worm in the stool for sixty thousand years.


न मे ब्रह्मधनं भूयाद् यद् गृद्ध्वाल्पायुषो नरा: ।

पराजिताश्च्युता राज्याद् भवन्त्युद्वेजिनोऽहय: ॥४०॥


न मे ब्रह्म-धनम्
not my Braahmin's wealth
भूयाद् यद् गृद्ध्वा-
may be, which coveting,
अल्प-आयुष: नरा:
in small age men
पराजिता:-च्युता: राज्याद्
defeated, and usurped from kingdom
भवन्ति-उद्वेजिन:-अहय:
become venomful snakes

May the wealth of the Braahmins never be mine, as even those coveting it, die young, are defeated and lose their kingdom, and become venomful snakes.


विप्रं कृतागसमपि नैव द्रुह्यत मामका: ।

घ्नन्तं बहु शपन्तं वा नमस्कुरुत नित्यश: ॥४१॥


विप्रम् कृत-आगसम्-अपि
to the Braahmin, done wrong even
न-एव द्रुह्यत मामका:
not also harm, O My kinsmen!
घ्नन्तम् बहु शपन्तम् वा
hitting, much cursing or,
नमस्कुरुत नित्यश:
bow every day

O My kinsmen! Even if a Braahmin does wrong do not harm him. Even if he hits you or curses you much, bow down to him every day.


यथाहं प्रणमे विप्राननुकालं समाहित: ।

तथा नमत यूयं च योऽन्यथा मे स दण्डभाक् ॥४२॥


यथा-अहम् प्रणमे विप्रान्-
as I salute the Braahmins
अनुकालम् समाहित:
three times, carefully,
तथा नमत यूयम् च
like that bow down you all and,
य:-अन्यथा मे
who does otherwise, My
स: दण्ड-भाक्
he punishment desrves

As I carefully salute the Braahmins three times a day, so also you all should bow down to them. Whoever does otherwise, deserves punishment from Me.


ब्राह्मणार्थो ह्यपहृतो हर्तारं पातयत्यध: ।

अजानन्तमपि ह्येनं नृगं ब्राह्मणगौरिव ॥४३॥


ब्राह्मण-अर्थ: हि-
Braahmin's wealth, itself
अपहृत: हर्तारम्
misappropriated, to the one who does so,
पातयति-अध:
to downfall takes
अजानन्तम्-अपि
not knowing also,
हि-एनम् नृगम्
indeed, this Nriga
ब्राह्मण-गौ:-इव
Braahmin's cow like

Whe misappropriated, the wealth of the Braahmin itself causes the downfall of the one who does so, even it be unknowingly, like this Nriga, by the cow of the Braahmin.


एवं विश्राव्य भगवान् मुकुन्दो द्वारकौकस: ।

पावन: सर्वलोकानां विवेश निजमन्दिरम् ॥४४॥


एवम् विश्राव्य
thus making them hear
भगवान् मुकुन्:
The Lord Mukunda,
द्वारका-औकस:
to the Dwaarakaa pople,
पावन: सर्व-लोकानाम्
The Purifier of all the worlds,
विवेश निज-मन्दिरम्
entered His won palace

Thus making the residents of Dwaarakaa hear this, Lord Mukunda, The Purifier of all the worlds, entered Hiw own palace.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां

दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे नृगोपाख्यानं

नाम चतु:षष्टितमोऽध्याय: ॥६४॥
