श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
बलभद्र: कुरुश्रेष्ठ भगवान् रथमास्थित: ।

सुहृद्दिदृक्षुरुत्कण्ठ: प्रययौ नन्दगोकुलम् ॥१॥


बलभद्र: कुरुश्रेष्ठ
Balaraama, O jewel among the Kurus!
भगवान् रथम्-आस्थित:
The Lord, chariot mounting
सुहृत्-दिदृक्षु:-उत्कण्ठ:
friends wanting to see, anxcious,
प्रययौ नन्द-गोकुलम्
went to Nanda's Gokula

O jewel among the Kurus! The Lord Balaraama, anxciously wanting to see his friends and relatives, mounted a chariot and went to Nanda's Gokula.


परिष्वक्तश्चिरोत्कण्ठैर्गोपैर्गोपीभिरेव च ।

रामोऽभिवाद्य पितरावाशीर्भिरभिनन्दित: ॥२॥


परिष्वक्त:-
embraced,
चिर-उत्कण्ठै:-गोपै:-
for long eager by the Gopas,
गोपीभि:-एव च राम:-
Gopis also and, Balaraama
अभिवाद्य पितरौ-
greeted the parents,
आशीर्भि:-अभिनन्दित:
by blessings welcomed

The Gopas and also the Gopis, who were longing for him for long, embraced him. He greeted the parents and was welcomed by them with blessings.


चिरं न: पाहि दाशार्ह सानुजो जगदीश्वर: ।

इत्यारोप्याङ्कमालिङ्ग्य नेत्रै: सिषिचतुर्जलै: ॥३॥


चिरम् न: पाहि
for eternity us protect
दाशार्ह स-नुज:
O scion of the Daashaarha, with younger brother
जगत्-ईश्वर:
of the universe The Lord,
इति-आरोप्य-अङ्कम्-
thus, putting on the lap
आलिङ्ग्य
embracing,
नेत्रै: सिषिचतु:-जलै:
with eyes bathed water

O scion of the Daashaarha, Bala, O Lord of the universe! with your younger brother, protect us till eternity. So saying, they put him on their lap and embracing him, bathed him with the water of their eyes.


गोपवृद्धांश्च विधिवद् यविष्ठैरभिवन्दित: ।

यथावयो यथासख्यं यथासम्बन्धमात्मन: ॥४॥


गोप-वृद्धान्-च
the Gopa elders and
विधि-वत्
as per the norm
यविष्ठै:-अभिवन्दित:
with the youngers were greeted
यथा-वय: यथा-सख्यम्
according to the age and friendship
यथा-सम्बन्धम्-आत्मन:
according to the relation with self

He greeted the elders of the Gopas as per the norm, and was greeted by the youngers, according to the age and friendship and according to the relation with himself.


समुपेत्याथ गोपालान् हास्यहस्तग्रहादिभि: ।

विश्रान्तं सुखमासीनं पप्रच्छु: पर्युपागता: ॥५॥


समुपेत्य-अथ गोपालान्
meeting then the cowherds
हास्य-हस्त-ग्रह-आदिभि:
with smile, hands holding and others,
विश्रान्तम् सुखम्-आसीनम्
relaxed, happily seated
पप्रच्छु: पर्युपागता:
asked they gathered around

He met the cowherds with smiles and holding hands, and other gestures. Then relaxed and happily seated, they, who had gathered around asked.


पृष्टाश्चानामयं स्वेषु प्रेमगद्गदया गिरा ।

कृष्णो कमलपत्राक्षे संन्यस्ताखिलराधस: ॥६॥


पृष्टा:-च-अनामयम्
(they) were asked and about their health
स्वेषु प्रेम-गद्गदया गिरा
of own people, with affection choked voice
कृष्ण: कमल-पत्र-अक्षे
in Krishna, lotus petal eyed,
संन्यस्त-अखिल-राधस:
reposed entire worldly pleasures

They the cow herds, who had reposed all their worldly pleasure in the lotus eyed Krishna, were asked about their health, and they also asked of their peoples' health with their voice choked with affection.


कच्चिन्नो बान्धवा राम सर्वे कुशलमासते ।

कच्चित् स्मरथ नो राम यूयं दारसुतान्विता: ॥७॥


कच्चित्-न: बान्धवा:
are our kith and kin
राम सर्वे
O Balaraam! All
कुशलम्-आसते
very well living
कच्चित् स्मरथ न:
do remember us
राम यूयम्
Balaraama you all
दार-सुत-अन्विता:
your wife and sons along with

O Balaraama! Are all our kith and kins well? O Balaraama! Do you with your wife and sons, remember us?


दिष्ट्या कंसो हत: पापो दिष्ट्या मुक्ता: सुहृज्जना: ।

निहत्य निर्जित्य रिपून् दिष्ट्या दुर्गं समाश्रिता: ॥८॥


दिष्ट्या कंस: हत: पाप:
fortunately, Kansa is killed, the wicked
दिष्ट्या मुक्ता: सुहृज्जना:
fortunately are released the dear people
निहत्य निर्जित्य रिपून्
having killed and winning the enemies
दिष्ट्या दुर्गम् समाश्रिता:
luckily, in the fort have taken shelter

Fortunately, the wicked Kansa is killed, fortunately the dear people are released, having killed and winning the enemies, luckily they have taken shelter in the fort of Dwaaraka.


गोप्यो हसन्त: पप्रच्छू रामसन्दर्शनादृता: ।

कच्चिदास्ते सुखं कृष्ण: पुरस्त्रीजनवल्लभ: ॥९॥


गोप्य: हसन्त: पप्रच्छु:
the Gopis laughingly asked
राम-सन्दर्शन-आदृता:
by Balaraama's meeting honoured,
कच्चित्-आस्ते
does live
सुखम् कृष्ण:
happily Krishna
पुर-स्त्री-जन-वल्लभ:
of the city women folks' dear

Honoured by the meeting with Balaraama, the Gopis smilingly asked if Krishna, the beloved of the ladies of the city lives happily.


कच्चित् स्मरति वा बन्धून् पितरं मातरं च स: ।

अप्यसौ मातरं द्रष्टुं सकृदप्यागमिष्यति ।

अपि वा स्मरतेऽस्माकमनुसेवां महाभुज: ॥१०॥


कच्चित् स्मरति वा
ever remembers or
बन्धून् पितरम्
the relatives, father
मातरम् च स:
mother and He
अपि-असौ मातरम् द्रष्टुम्
also He mother to see
सकृत्-अपि-आगमिष्यति
once even will come
अपि वा स्मरते-
even, or remembers
अस्माकम्-अनुसेवाम्
our devotion
महाभुज:
The long armed one

Does He ever remember the relatives, father and mother? Will he come even for once to meet His mother? Does He, The long armed One, also remember our devotion to Him?


मातरं पितरं भ्रातृन् पतीन् पुत्रान् स्वसृरपि ।

यदर्थे जहिम दाशार्ह दुस्त्यजान् स्वजनान् प्रभो ॥११॥


मातरम् पितरम्
mother, father,
भ्रातृन् पतीन्
brothers, husband,
पुत्रान् स्वसृ:-अपि
sons, sisters, also
यत्-अर्थे जहिम दाशार्ह
for Whose sake forsook
दाशार्ह
The scion of the Daashaarhas
दुस्त्यजान् स्वजनान्
difficult to be renounced, own people,
प्रभो
O Almighty!

O Almighty! For Whose sake we have foresaken all our people, so hard to be renounced, like mother, father, brothers, husband, sons, and also the sisters.


ता न: सद्य: परित्यज्य गत: संछिन्नसौहृद: ।

कथं नु तादृशं स्त्रीभिर्न श्रद्धीयेत भाषितम् ॥१२॥


ता: न: सद्य:

परित्यज्य गत:
leaving, went
संछिन्न-सौहृद:
breaking affection (ties)
कथम् नु तादृशम्
how indeed such like
स्त्रीभि:-न
by the women will not
श्रद्धीयेत भाषितम्
believe (His) words

Instantly, He went away leaving us, breaking all ties of affection. Indeed how will the women not believe His words?


कथं नु गृह्णन्त्यनवस्थितात्मनो वच: कृतघ्नस्य बुधा: पुरस्त्रिय: ।

गृह्णन्ति वै चित्रकथस्य सुन्दरस्मितावलोकोच्छ्वसितस्मरातुरा: ॥१३॥


कथम् नु गृह्णन्ति-
how indeed accept
अनवस्थित-आत्मन:
of the fickle minded
वच: कृतघ्नस्य
words, ungrateful
बुधा: पुर-स्त्रिय:
the wise city women
गृह्णन्ति वै
accept of course
चित्र-कथस्य सुन्दर-
of the flowered worded's beautiful
स्मित-अवलोक-
smile, glance
अच्छ्वसित-स्मर-आतुरा:
breathing heavily, by love overpowered

How indeed did the wise city women put faith in the ungrateful fickle-minded one's words? Surely they accepted His flowery words by His beautiful smile and glances, over-powered by His love and breathing heavily.


किं नस्तत्कथया गोप्य: कथा: कथयतापरा: ।

यात्यस्माभिर्विना कालो यदि तस्य तथैव न: ॥१४॥


किम् न:-तत्-कथयत-
what ours His tales
गोप्य: कथा:
O Gopis stories
कथयत-अपरा:
speak of others
याति-अस्माभि:-विना
spent us without
काल: यदि तस्य
time if His
तथा-एव न:
like that ony, ours

O Gopis what is the use of our speaking about Him? If His time is spent without us, our time also will pass without Him.


इति प्रहसितं शौरेर्जल्पितं चारु दीक्षितम् ।

गतिं प्रेमपरिष्वङ्गं स्मरन्त्यो रुरुदु: स्त्रिय: ॥१५॥


इति प्रहसितम् शौरे:-
thus, the smile of Shauri (Krishna)
जल्पितम् चारु दीक्षितम्
talks enchanting, glances,
गतिम् प्रेम-परिष्वङ्गम्
gait, affectionate hugs
स्मरन्त्य: रुरुदु: स्त्रिय:
remembering wept the women

Thus, remembering Shauri's, Krishna's smile, enchanting talks, and glances, graceful gait, and affectionate hugs, the women wept.


सङ्कर्षणस्ता: कृष्णस्य सन्देशैर्हृदयङ्गमै: ।

सान्त्वयामास भगवान् नानानुनयकोविद: ॥१६॥


सङ्कर्षण:-ता:
Sankarshana, Balaraama, them,
कृष्णस्य सन्देशै:-
by Krishna's messages,
हृदयङ्गमै:
heart felt,
सान्त्वयामास
pacified
भगवान्
The Lord
नाना-अनुनय-कोविद:
in various conciliations adapt at

The Lord Balaraama, adapt at various methods of reconciliation, pecified them with heart-felt messages from Krishna.


द्वौ मासौ तत्र चावात्सीन्मधुं माधवमेव च ।

राम: क्षपासु भगवान् गोपीनां रतिमावहन् ॥१७॥


द्वौ मासौ तत्र
two months, there
च-अवात्सीत्-
and stayed
मधुम् माधवम्-एव च
Chaitra Vaishaakha also and
राम: क्षपासु
Balaraama, in the nights
भगवान् गोपीनाम्
The Lord, of the Gopis
रतिम्-आवहन्
longing increasing

The Lord Balaraama stayed there for the two months of Chaitra and Vaishaakha, in the nights increasing the longings of the Gopis.


पूर्णचन्द्रकलामृष्टे कौमुदीगन्धवायुना ।

यमुनोपवने रेमे सेविते स्त्रीगणैर्वृत: ॥१८॥


पूर्ण-चन्द्र-कला-मृष्टे
full moon rays illumined
कौमुदी-गन्ध-वायुना
lily fragrance breeze
यमुना-उपवने रेमे
in Yamuna's gardens sported
सेविते स्त्री-गणै:-वृत:
entertained by women's groups, surrounded

He sported in the gardens of Yamuna illumined by the rays of the full moon, the breeze wafting with the fragrance of lily flowers, entertained and surrounded by the groups of women.


वरुणप्रेषिता देवी वारुणी वृक्षकोटरात् ।

पतन्ती तद् वनं सर्वं स्वगन्धेनाध्यवासयत् ॥१९॥


वरुण-प्रेषिता
by Varuna sent
देवी वारुणी
Devi Vaaruni
वृक्ष-कोटरात्
from the tree's hollow
पतन्ती तद् वनम्
flowing, that forest
सर्वम् स्व-गन्धेन-अध्यवासयत्
all, with its own smell covered

The celestial beverage Vaaruni, sent by Varuna, flowing from the hollow of a tree, filled that whole forest with its own smell.


तं गन्धं मधुधाराया वायुनोपहृतं बल: ।

आघ्रायोपगतस्तत्र ललनाभि: समं पपौ ॥२०॥


तम् गन्धम्
that smell
मधु-धाराया:
of the nectar streaming
वायुना-उपहृतम्
by the wind wafted
बल: आघ्राय-उपगत:-
Balaraama, smelling, came
तत्र ललनाभि:
there, the ladies
समम् पपौ
with drank

Smelling that smell of the streaming nectar wafted by the wind, Balaraama, came there, and with the ladies drank it.


उपगीयमानचरितो वनिताभिर्हलायुध: ।

वनेषु व्यचरत् क्षीवो मदविह्वललोचन: ॥२१॥


उपगीयमान-चरित:
being sung the exploits,
वनिताभि:-हलायुध:
by the ladies, Balaraama,
वनेषु व्यचरत् क्षीव:
in the forests roamed intoxicated
मद-विह्वल-लोचन:
intoxication over-powered eyed

As Balaraama's exploits were being sung of by the ladies, intoxicated, he roamed about in the forests with intoxication laden eyes.


स्रग्व्येककुण्डलो मत्तो वैजयन्त्या च मालया ।

बिभ्रत् स्मितमुखाम्भोजं स्वेदप्रालेयभूषितम् ॥२२॥


स्रग्वी-एक-कुण्डल:
garlanded, one ear-ring (wearing)
मत्तो वैजयन्त्या
intoxicated, by Vaijayanti
च मालया बिभ्रत्
and necklace adorned,
स्मित-मुख-अम्भोजम्
smiling face lotus,
स्वेद-प्रालेय-भूषितम्
sweat dew drops (like) decked with

He was wearing a flower garland and one ear-ring in the ear, intoxicatd he was adorned with the Vaijayanti necklace, his smiling lotus face was decked up with dew like sweat drops.


स आजुहाव यमुनां जलक्रीडार्थमीश्वर: ।

निजं वाक्यमनादृत्य मत्त इत्यापगां बल: ।

अनागतां हलाग्रेण कुपितो विचकर्ष ह ॥२३॥


स: आजुहाव यमुनाम्
he summoned Yamunaa
जल-क्रीडा-अर्थम्-
water sports for
ईश्वर: निजम् वाक्यम्-
The lord own words
अनादृत्य मत्त
dishonouring, intoxicated,
इति-आपगाम् बल:
thus the river, Balaraama
अनागताम् हल-अग्रेण
not having come, by the plough's front
कुपित: विचकर्ष ह
enraged, pulled indeed

The Lord summoned Yamuna for the purpose of sporting in the water. 'He is intoxicated', thus the river dishonouring his words did not come. Enraged, Balaraama dragged the river by the front point of his plough.


पापे त्वं मामवज्ञाय यन्नायासि मयाऽऽहुता ।

नेष्ये त्वां लाङ्गलाग्रेण शतधा कामचारिणीम् ॥२४॥


पापे त्वम् माम्-अवज्ञाय
'O wicked One! Me disobeying
यत्-न-आयासि
that do not come
मया-आहुता
by me called,
नेष्ये त्वाम्
will take you
लाङ्गल-अग्रेण
by the plough's front
शतधा काम-चारिणीम्
in hundreds, wilfull and wayward

O Wicked One! Even though called by Me, disobeying Me, you did not come. O wilfull wayward One! I will split you in hundred streams, by the front of my plough.


एवं निर्भर्त्सिता भीता यमुना यदुनन्दनम् ।

उवाच चकिता वाचं पतिता पादयोर्नृप ॥२५॥


एवम् निर्भर्त्सिता
thus rebuked,
भीता यमुना
fearful Yamunaa
यदुनन्दनम्
to Balaraama
उवाच चकिता वाचम्
said, eantreating words,
पतिता पादयो:-नृप
falling on (His) feet, O King!

O King! Thus rebuked, the fearful Yamunaa, fell on the feet of Balaraama and entreatingly said to Him,….


राम राम महाबाहो न जाने तव विक्रमम् ।

यस्यैकांशेन विधृता जगती जगत: पते ॥२६॥


राम राम महाबाहो
O enchanting Balaraama, mighty armed
न जाने
(we) do not know
तव विक्रमम्
Your valour
यस्य-एक-अंशेन
by Whose one part
विधृता जगती
is upheld the earth,
जगत: पते
O of the universe The Master!

O enchanting mighty armed Balaraama, O Lord of the universe! I did not know Your valour and glory, on Whose one part the earth is upheld.


परं भावं भगवतो भगवन् मामजानतीम् ।

मोक्तुमर्हसि विश्वात्मन् प्रपन्नां भक्तवत्सल ॥२७॥


परम् भावम् भगवत:
The Supreme form of (You) The Lord
भगवन्
O Almighty
माम्-अजानतीम्
me, not knowing,
मोक्तुम्-अर्हसि
to release are capable
विश्वात्मन् प्रपन्नाम्
O of the universe The Soul! Surrendered
भक्त-वत्सल
O of the devotees fond of

O Almighty! The The Supreme form of You The Lord, me, not knowing, O Soul of the universe! Are capable of releasing, as I take refuge in You, O Lover of devotees!


ततो व्यमुञ्चद् यमुनां याचितो भगवान् बल: ।

विजगाह जलं स्त्रीभि: करेणुभिरिवेभराट् ॥२८॥


तत: व्यमुञ्चद् यमुनाम्
then, released Yamunaa
याचित: भगवान् बल:
entreated Lord Balaraama
विजगाह जलम्
entered the water
स्त्रीभि: करेणुभि:-
with the women, with the female elephants
इव-इभराट्
like the elephant leader

Thus entreated, Lord Balaraama entered the water, with the women, just as the leader of the elephants would, with the female elephants.


कामं विहृत्य सलिलादुत्तीर्णायासिताम्बरे ।

भूषणानि महार्हाणि ददौ कान्ति: शुभां स्रजम् ॥२९॥


कामम् विहृत्य सलिलात्-
at will, coming out from the water,
उत्तीर्णाय-असित-अम्बरे
two pieces of blue cloathes,
भूषणानि महा-अर्हाणि
ornaments of great value
ददौ कान्ति:
gave Laxmi
शुभाम् स्रजम्
pure necklace

When He came out of the water at will, Laxmi gave Him two pieces of blue cloathes, ornaments of great value, and necklace of pure gold.


वसित्वा वाससी नीले मालामामुच्य काञ्चनीम् ।

रेजे स्वलङ्कृतो लिप्तो माहेन्द्र इव वारण: ॥३०॥


वसित्वा वाससी नीले
adorning the cloathes, blue,
मालाम्-आमुच्य
the necklace putting,
काञ्चनीम्
golden,
रेजे सु-अलङ्कृत:
shone, well decked up
लिप्त: माहेन्द्र
smeared of Indra
इव वारण:
like the elephant

Having put on the blue cloathes, and wearing the gold chain, Balaraama, well adorned, shone like the smeared elephant (Airaawata) of Indra.


अद्यापि दृश्यते राजन् यमुनाऽऽकृष्टवर्त्मना ।

बलस्यानन्तवीर्यस्य वीर्यं सूचयतीव हि ॥३१॥


अद्य-अपि दृश्यते
today also, is seen
राजन्
O King!
यमुना-आकृष्ट-वर्त्मना
Yamunaa (with) the drawn path
बलस्य-अनन्त-वीर्यस्य
Balaraama's, of undiminished powers
वीर्यम् सूचयति-इव हि
power exhibiting like indeed

O King! Even today, Yamunaa flows through the course marked by the dragging by the immense powerful Balaraama, as if exhibiting His strength.


एवं सर्वा निशा याता एकैव रमतो व्रजे ।

रामस्याक्षिप्तचित्तस्य माधुर्यैर्व्रजयोषिताम् ॥३२॥


एवम् सर्वा निशा याता
thus, all the nights were spent
एका-इव रमत: व्रजे
one (night) like, enjoying in Vraja
रामस्य-आक्षिप्त-चित्तस्य
of Balaraama, losing sense (of time)
माधुर्यै:-व्रज-योषिताम्
by the charming Vraja damsels

Balaraama, had lost the sense of time as He enjoyed with the charming damsels of Vraja, and all His nights in Vraja, were spent as if it were one night.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां

दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे बलदेवविजय यमुनाकर्षणं नाम

पञ्चषष्टितम: अध्याय: ॥६५॥
