श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
नन्दव्रजं गते रामे करूषाधिपतिर्नृप ।

वासुदेवोऽहमित्यज्ञो दूतं कृष्णाय प्राहिणोत् ॥१॥


नन्द-व्रजम् गते रामे
to Nanda's Vraja, having gone Balaraama,
करूष-अधिपति:-
Karusha king
नृप
O King!
वासुदेव:-अहम्-
Vaasudeva am I,'
इति-अज्ञ:
thus, the ignorant
दूतम् कृष्णाय प्राहिणोत्
messanger to Krishna sent

O King! When Balaraama was away to Nanda's Vraja, the king of Karusha, ignorant as he was, sent a messanger to Krishna, declaring, 'I am Vaasudeva'.


त्वं वासुदेवो भगवानवतीर्णो जगत्पति: ।

इति प्रस्तोभितो बालैर्मेन आत्मानमच्युतम् ॥२॥


त्वम् वासुदेव: भगवान्-
'You are Vaasudeva, O Lord!
अवतीर्ण: जगत्-पति:
descended O of the universe The Ruler
इति प्रस्तोभित:
thus flattered
बालै:-मेने
by the foolish, took
आत्मानम्-अच्युतम्
himself to be The Immortal Lord

He was flattered by the foolish, saying, 'You are Vaasudeva, descended as the Ruler of the universe,' and he took himself to be The Immortal Lord.


दूतं च प्राहिणोन्मन्द: कृष्णायाव्यक्तवर्त्मने ।

द्वारकायां यथा बालो नृपो बालकृतोऽबुध: ॥३॥


दूतम् च प्राहिणोत्-
messanger and sent
मन्द: कृष्णाय-
the foolish, to Krishna
अव्यक्त-वर्त्मने
unrevealed ways
द्वारकायां यथा बालो
to Dwaaraka, just as a child
नृपो बालकृतोऽबुध:
king by (other) boys made, not knowing

He the foolish, not knowing the unrevealed ways of Krishna, sent a messanger to Him, to Dwaarakaa, just as a child is made a king by the other children.


दूतस्तु द्वारकामेत्य सभायामास्थितं प्रभुम् ।

कृष्णं कमलपत्राक्षं राजसन्देशमब्रवीत् ॥४॥


दूत:-तु द्वारकाम्-एत्य
the messanger, indeed, to Dwaaraka reached,
सभायाम्-आस्थितम् प्रभुम्
in the council hall seated to The Lord
कृष्णम् कमल-पत्र-अक्षम्
Krishna, lotus petal eyed,
राज-सन्देशम्-अब्रवीत्
the kings message delivered

The messanger reached Dwaarakaa, and delivered the message of the king to The lotus-petals eyed, Lord Krishna, seated in the council hall.


वासुदेवोऽवतीर्णोऽहमेक एव न चापर: ।

भूतानामनुकम्पार्थं त्वं तु मिथ्याभिधां त्यज ॥५॥


वासुदेव:-अवतीर्ण:-
'Vaasudeva, descended
अहम्-एक: एव
have I alone, only,
न च-अपर:
not and any other,
भूतानाम्-अनुकम्पा-अर्थम्
the creatures to bless the purpose,
त्वम् तु
You surely
मिथ्या-अभिधाम् त्यज
false name give up

' I alone am Vaasudeva, and no one else. I have descended on the earth, for the purpose of blessing the beings. You have falsely assumed that name, give it up.'


यानि त्वमस्मच्चिह्नानि मौढ्याद् बिभर्षि सात्वत ।

त्यक्त्वैहि मां त्वं शरणं नो चेद् देहि ममाहवम् ॥६॥


यानि त्वम्-
those, You,
अस्मत्-चिह्नानि
our marks,
मौढ्यात् बिभर्षि सात्वत
foolishly adorn O scion of the Yadus!
त्यक्त्वा-एहि माम्
abandon (them) come to my
त्वम् शरणम् नो चेत्
You shelter, otherwise,
देहि मम-आहवम्
give me fight

'Those marks of ours, which You have foolishly adorned, O Scion of the Yadus! Abandon them, and come to my shelter, otherwise, give me fight.'


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
कत्थनं तदुपाकर्ण्य पौण्ड्रकस्याल्पमेधस: ।

उग्रसेनादय: सभ्या उच्चकैर्जहसुस्तदा ॥७॥


कत्थनम् तत्-उपाकर्ण्य
bragging that having heard,
पौण्ड्रकस्य-अल्प-मेधस:
of Paundraka, dull-witted,
उग्रसेन-आदय: सभ्या:
Ugrasena and other assembly members
उच्चकै:-जहसु:-तदा
loudly laughed, then

Having heard that bragging of the dull-witted Pundraka, Ugrasena and the other assembly members, laughed loud, then.


उवाच दूतं भगवान् परिहासकथामनु ।

उत्स्रक्ष्ये मूढ चिह्नानि यैस्त्वमेवं विकत्थसे ॥८॥


उवाच दूतम्
said to the messanger
भगवान्
The Lord
परिहास-कथाम्-अनु
the humourous talks after,
उत्स्रक्ष्ये मूढ चिह्नानि
will entrust, O Fool!, the insignias,
यै:-त्वम्-एवम् विकत्थसे
by whom encouraged, thus brag

After their humourous talks had ended, The Lord said, 'O fool! As though I will entrust my insignia to you who brags thus, encouraged by whom?'


मुखं तदपिधायाज्ञ कङ्कगृध्रवटैर्वृत: ।

शयिष्यसे हतस्तत्र भविता शरणं शुनाम् ॥९॥


मुखम् तत्-अपिधाय-अज्ञ
mouth that hiding, O Fool!
कङ्क-गृध्र-वटै:-वृत:
by kites, vultures, birds, surrounded,
शयिष्यसे हत:-
will lay dead,
तत्र भविता
there, will be
शरणम् शुनाम्
the shelter of the dogs

O Fool! You will hide this bragging mouth, and lie dead surrounded by kites vultures and carnivorous birds, and then, will become the shelter of the dogs.


इति दूतस्तदाक्षेपं स्वामिने सर्वमाहरत् ।

कृष्णोऽपि रथमास्थाय काशीमुपजगाम ह ॥१०॥


इति दूत:-तत्-आक्षेपम्
so, the messanger, that retort
स्वामिने सर्वम्-आहरत्
to (his) master all conveyed
कृष्ण:-अपि रथम्-आस्थाय
Krishna also chariot mounting,
काशीम्-उपजगाम ह
to Kaashi went away

So, the messanger conveyed all that retort to his maste. Krishna also mounted His chariot and went away to Kaashi.


पौण्ड्रकोऽपि तदुद्योगमुपलभ्य महारथ: ।

अक्षौहिणीभ्यां संयुक्तो निश्चक्राम पुराद्द्रुतम् ॥११॥


पौण्ड्रक:-अपि
Pondraka also
तत्-उद्योगम्-उपलभ्य
His action understanding,
महारथ:
the great charioteer,
अक्षौहिणीभ्याम् संयुक्त:
two Akshauhinees with
निश्चक्राम पुरात्-द्रुतम्
embarked from the city hastily

Pondraka, the great charioteer, understanding that action of His, took two Akshauhinees with him, and hastily embarked from the city.


तस्य काशिपतिर्मित्रं पार्ष्णिग्राहोऽन्वयान्नृप ।

अक्षौहिणीभिस्तिसृभिरपश्यत् पौण्ड्रकं हरि: ॥१२॥


तस्य काशिपति:-मित्रम्
his, Kashi's ruler, the friend,
पार्ष्णिग्राह:-
to help him
अन्वयात्-नृप
followed, O King!
अक्षौहिणीभि:-तिसृभि:-
with Akshauhunees three
अपश्यत् पौण्ड्रकम् हरि:
was seen Paundraka by Shree Hari

O King! His friend, the ruler of Kaashi, followed with three akshuhinee armies, to help him. Paundraka was seen by Shree Hari.


शङ्खार्यसिगदाशार्ङ्गश्रीवत्साद्युपलक्षितम् ।

बिभ्राणं कौस्तुभमणिं वनमालाविभूषितम् ॥१३॥


शङ्ख-अरि-असि-गदा
conch, discus, sword, mace,
शार्ङ्ग-श्रीवत्स-आदि-
Shaaranga, Shree-vatsa, and other
उपलक्षितम्
(marks) marked with,
बिभ्राणम् कौस्तुभ-मणिम्
flaunting the Kaustubh -mani
वन-माला-विभूषितम्
sylvan-flowers garland adorned with

He had on him, the marks of conch, discus, sword, mace, Shaaranga, Shree-vatsa, and others. He flaunted the Kaustubha mani, and was adorned with a garland of sylvan flowers.


कौशेयवाससी पीते वसानं गरुडध्वजम् ।

अमूल्यमौल्याभरणं स्फुरन्मकरकुण्डलम् ॥१४॥


कौशेय-वाससी
in silk cloathed,
पीते वसानम्
yellow cloathes,
गरुड-ध्वजम्
Gaduda on the flag,
अमूल्य-मौली-आभरणम्
pricless crown,
स्फुरत्-मकर-कुण्डल
dangling crocodile ear-rings

He was cloathed in yellow silk garments, had the sign of Gaduda on his flag, and wore a priceless crown, and crocodile shaped ear-rings dangled in his ears.


दृष्ट्वा तमात्मनस्तुल्यवेषं कित्रिममास्थितम् ।

यथानटं रङ्गगतं विजहास भृशं हरि: ॥१५॥


दृष्ट्वा तम्-
seeing him,
आत्मन:-तुल्य-वेषम्
Himself like attire,
कित्रिमम्-आस्थितम्
artificial looking
यथा-नटम् रङ्ग-गतम्
just as an actor on the stage acting
विजहास भृशम् हरि:
laughed loudly Shree Hari

Lord Shree Krishna saw him in an attire like His own, which looked artificial like that of an actor acting on stage. He then burst out laughing.


शूलैर्गदाभि: परिघै: शक्त्यृष्टिप्रासतोमरै: ।

असिभि: पट्टिशैर्बाणै: प्राहरन्नरयो हरिम् ॥१६॥


शूलै:-गदाभि: परिघै:
with pikes, maces, clubs,
शक्ति-ऋष्टि-
lances, spears,
प्रास-तोमरै:
darts, bludgeons,
असिभि: पट्टिशै:-बाणै:
swords, Pattishas and arrows,
प्राहरन्-अरय: हरिम्
charged the enemy on Shree Hari

The enemy charged on Shree Hari with their pikes, maces, clubs, lances, spears, darts, bludgeons, swords, Pattishas and arrows.


कृष्णस्तु तत्पौण्ड्रककाशिराजयोर्बलं गजस्यन्दनवाजिपत्तिमत् ।

गदासिचक्रेषुभिरार्दयद् भृशं यथा युगान्ते हुतभुक् पृथक् प्रजा: ॥१७॥


कृष्ण:-तु
Krishna also,
तत्-पौण्ड्रक-काशि-राजयो:-
that of Paundraka, and Kaashi king's,
बलम् गज-स्यन्दन-
army, elephant, chariot,
वाजि-पत्तिमत्
horses, foot soldiers,
गदा-असि-चक्र-इषुभि:-
with mace, sword, discus, shafts,
आर्दयत् भृशम् यथा
crushed fully just as,
युग-अन्ते हुत-भुक्
at universe distruction time, fire
पृथक् प्रजा: ॥१७॥
various creatures

Krishna also with His mace, sword, discus, shafts, fully crushed the army of Paundraka and Kaashi king, with the elephants, chariots, horses, and foot soldiers, just as the fire, at the time of universal distruction destroys all various creatures.


आयोधनं तद्रथवाजिकुञ्जरद्विपत्खरोष्ट्रैररिणावखण्डितै: ।

बभौ चितं मोदवहं मनस्विनामाक्रीडनं भूतपतेरिवोल्बणम् ॥१८॥


आयोधनम् तत्-रथ-वाजि-
the (battle) field that, with chariots, horses,
कुञ्जर-द्विपत्-खर-
elephants, foot-soldiers, donkeys,
उष्ट्रै:-अरिणा-अवखण्डितै:
camels, with sword cut to pieces,
बभौ चितम् मोदवहम्
became covered, happiness giving
मनस्विनाम्-आक्रीडनम्
to the brave, and the play ground
भूतपते:-इव-उल्बणम्
of Shnakar, like fierce

The battle field was shrewn and covered with the chariots and bodies of horses, elephants, foot-soldiers, donkeys, camels, cut to pieces with Krishna's sword, giving delight to the brave and became a fierce playground for Lord Shankara.


अथाह पौण्ड्रकं शौरिर्भो भो: पौण्ड्रक यद् भवान् ।

दूतवाक्येन मामाह तान्यस्त्राण्युत्सृजामि ते ॥१९॥


अथ-आह पौण्ड्रकम् शौरि:-
then, said, to Paundraka, Shauri,
भो भो: पौण्ड्रक
'O!O! Paundraka!
यत् भवान्
that (which) you
दूत-वाक्येन माम-आह
by a messanger to me said of,
तानि-अस्त्राणि-
those weapons
उत्सृजामि ते
charging on you

Then, Shree Krishna said to Paundraka, 'O Paundraka! The weapons of which you said through the messanger to Me, those weapons I am charging on you.


त्याजयिष्येऽभिधानं मे यत्त्वयाज्ञ मृषा धृतम् ।

व्रजामि शरणं तेऽद्य यदि नेच्छामि संयुगम् ॥२०॥


त्याजयिष्ये-
will (make you) give up
अभिधानम् मे यत्-
name mine that
त्त्वया-अज्ञ मृषा धृतम्
by you,O Ignorant man! Falsely taken
व्रजामि शरणम् ते-अद्य
will go to shelter yours, todaay,
यदि न-इच्छामि संयुगम्
if (I) do not want to figh (you)

'I will force you to give up my name which, O Ignorant man! You have falsely taken. If I do not give you fight, I will take refuge in you, today.'


इति क्षिप्त्वा शितैर्बाणैर्विरथीकृत्य पौण्ड्रकम् ।

शिरोऽवृश्चद् रथाङ्गेन वज्रेणेन्द्रो यथा गिरे: ॥२१॥


इति क्षिप्त्वा
thus rebuking,
शितै:-बाणै:-
with sharp arrows,
विरथी-कृत्य पौण्ड्रकम्
chariotless rendering Paundraka,
शिर:-अवृश्चत् रथ-अङ्गेन
head sheered with chariot's part (wheel)
वज्रेण-इन्द्र: यथा गिरे:
with thunderbolt Indra like of the mountains

Thus rebuking him, Krishan rendered Paundraka charoit-less, shattering his chariot with sharp arrows, and sheered his head with the wheel of the chariot, like Indra had sheered the wings of the mountains with the thunderbolt.


तथा काशिपते: कायाच्छिर उत्कृत्य पत्रिभि: ।

न्यपातयत् काशिपुर्यां पद्मकोशमिवानिल: ॥२२॥


तथा काशि-पते:
like that, of the Kaashi king,
कायात्-शिर:
from the body the head
उत्कृत्य पत्रिभि:
severing with arrows,
न्यपातयत् काशि-पुर्याम्
caused to fall in Kaashi city
पद्मकोशम्-इव-अनिल:
lotus bud like the wind

In the same manner, He severed the head of the Kaashi king from his body and caused it to fall in the city of Kaashi, like the wind carries away a lotus bud.


एवं मत्सरिणं हत्वा पौण्ड्रकं ससखं हरि: ।

द्वारकामाविशत् सिद्धैर्गीयमानकथामृत: ॥२३॥


एवम् मत्सरिणम् हत्वा
in this manner, the grudge holder killing
पौण्ड्रकम् ससखम् हरि:
Paundraka, with friend, Shree Hari,
द्वारकाम्-आविशत्
Dwaaraka entered
सिद्धै:-गीयमान-
by the Siddhas being sung
कथा-अमृत:
the tale nectar

In this manner, Shree Hari killed the grudge-holder Paundraka along with his friend, and entered the city of Dwaaraka, with His nectar like exploits sung of by the Siddhas.


स नित्यं भगवद्ध्यानप्रध्वस्ताखिलबन्धन: ।

बिभ्राणश्च हरे राजन् स्वरूपं तन्मयोऽभवत् ॥२४॥


स: नित्यम् भगवत्-ध्यान
he, consistently The Lord thinking of
प्रध्वस्त-अखिल-बन्धन:
snapping all bondage,
बिभ्राण:-च हरे:
flaunting and Shree Hari's
राजन् स्वरूपम्
O King! The form,
तत्-मय:-अभवत्
His like (form) became

O King! As Paundraka consistently thought of Shree Hari, he snapped all bondages, and because he flaunted His form and so remembered Him always, he attained a form Like that of Shree Hari.


शिर: पतितमालोक्य राजद्वारे सकुण्डलम् ।

किमिदं कस्य वा वक्त्रमिति संशिश्यिरे जना: ॥२५॥


शिर: पतितम्-आलोक्य
the head fallen seeing
राज-द्वारे स-कुण्डलम्
on the royal gate, with the ear-rings
किम्-इदम् कस्य वा
what is this, whose or
वक्त्रम्-इति
face it is,
संशिश्यिरे जना:
wondered the people

The people seeing a head with ear-rings fallen on the entrance of the palace, wondered as to what and whose face it was.


राज्ञ: काशिपतेर्ज्ञात्वा महिष्य: पुत्रबान्धवा: ।

पौराश्च हा हता राजन् नाथ नाथेति प्रारुदन् ॥२६॥


राज्ञ: काशिपते:-ज्ञात्वा
of the king, Kaashi's ruler, knowing,
महिष्य: पुत्र-बान्धवा:
the queens, sons, and relatives,
पौरा:-च हा हता
citizens and 'Alas! Devasted
राजन् नाथ नाथ-इति
O King, Master, O Master! Thus
प्रारुदन्
wailed

Recognizing the head to be of the king, Kaashi's ruler, the queens, sons, and relatives, and citizens wailed, 'O King, Master, O Master! Alas! We are devastated!' thus.


सुदक्षिणस्तस्य सुत: कृत्वा संस्थाविधिं पितु: ।

निहत्य पितृहन्तारं यास्याम्यपचितिं पितु: ॥२७॥


सुदक्षिण:-तस्य सुत:
Sudakshina, his son,
कृत्वा संस्था-विधिम् पितु:
having performed cremation rites of father,
निहत्य पितृ-हन्तारम्
having killed father's killer
यास्यामि-अपचितिम् पितु:
will repay the debt of father

His son Sudakshina, performed the funeral rites of his father, and vowed to kill the killer of his father, and to repay his father's debt.


इत्यात्मनाभिसन्धाय सोपाध्यायो महेश्वरम् ।

सुदक्षिणोऽर्चयामास परमेण समाधिना ॥२८॥


इति-आत्मना-अभिसन्धाय
thus by himself resolving,
स-उपाध्याय: महेश्वरम्
with the priest, Lord Shankara
सुदक्षिण:-अर्चयामास
Sudakshina worshipped
परमेण समाधिना
with intense concentration

Thus resolving by himself, Sudakshina, with the help of the priest worshipped Lord Shankara with intense concentration.


प्रीतोऽविमुक्ते भगवांस्तस्मै वरमदाद् भव: ।

पितृहन्तृवधोपायं स वव्रे वरमीप्सितम् ॥२९॥


प्रीत:-अविमुक्ते
pleased in Kaashi,
भगवान्-तस्मै
The Lord to him
वरम्-अदाद् भव:
boon gave Shankara,
पितृ-हन्तृ-वध-उपायम्
father killer to kill the means
स: वव्रे वरम्-ईप्सितम्
he seeked the boon desired

In Kaashi, Lord Shankara was pleased with him, and gave him a boon. He asked for the desired boon for the means of killing his father's killer.


दक्षिणाग्निं परिचर ब्राह्मणै: सममृत्विजम् ।

अभिचारविधानेन स चाग्नि: प्रमथैर्वृत: ॥३०॥


दक्षिण-अग्निम् परिचर
Dakshinaagni worship
ब्राह्मणै: समम्-ऋत्विजम्
the Braahmins with, as the presiding priests
अभिचार-विधानेन
by the 'Abhichaara' method,
स: च-अग्नि: प्रमथै:-वृत:
that and the fire, with the Pramathas,….

'Worship the fire Dakshinaagni, with the help of the Braahmins as the presiding priests, by the method of 'Abhichar', meant for bringing distruction. And that fire, surrounded by the Pramathas, …….


साधयिष्यति सङ्कल्पमब्रह्मण्ये प्रयोजित: ।

इत्यादिष्टस्तथा चक्रे कृष्णायाभिचरन् व्रती ॥३१॥


साधयिष्यति सङ्कल्पम्-
will accomplish the purpose
अब्रह्मण्ये प्रयोजित:
on the undevoted to the Braahmins, applied
इति-आदिष्ट:-
thus directed
तथा चक्रे कृष्णाय-
that applied for Krishna
अभिचरन् व्रती
the Abhichaara, the vow undertaker

That fire will accomplish the purpose, when applied to the one not devoted to the Braahmins. Thus directed, the vow undertaker Sudakshina applied the Abhichaara towards Keishna.


ततोऽग्निरुत्थित: कुण्डान्मूर्तिमानतिभीषण: ।

तप्तताम्रशिखाश्मश्रुरङ्गारोद्गारिलोचन: ॥३२॥


तत:-अग्नि:-उत्थित:
then, the fire emerged
कुण्डात्-मूर्तिमान-
from the pit, in person
अति-भीषण:
very fierce,
तप्त-ताम्र-शिखा-
molten copper like hair,
श्मश्रु:-अङ्गार-
moustache, amber
उद्गारि-लोचन:
emitting eyes

Then, from the sacrificial pit, the very fierce fire emerged in person, with molten copper like hair moustache and beard, with ambers emitting eyes.


दंष्ट्रोग्रभ्रुकुटीदण्डकठोरास्य: स्वजिह्वया ।

आलिहन् सृक्किणी नग्नो विधुन्वंस्त्रिशिखं ज्वलन् ॥३३॥


दंष्ट्र-उग्र-भ्रुकुटी-
teeth large, eyebrows
दण्ड-कठोर-आस्य:
drawn and threatening, stern face
स्व-जिह्वया आलिहन्
by own tongue licking
सृक्किणी नग्न:
the ends of the mouth, naked,
विधुन्वन्-त्रिशिखम् ज्वलन्
brandishing the trident, flaming

He had a stern face with large teeth and threatening drawn eyebrows, he licked the corners of his mouth with his tongue, his naked body was enflamed as he brandished the trident.


पद्भ्यां तालप्रमाणाभ्यां कम्पयन्नवनीतलम् ।

सोऽभ्यधावद् वृतो भूतैर्द्वारकां प्रदहन् दिश: ॥३४॥


पद्भ्याम् ताल-प्रमाणाभ्याम्
with legs the palm trees equal to,
कम्पयन्-अवनी-तलम्
trembling the earth surface
स:-अभ्यधावत्
he ran surronded by the Bhootas,
वृत: भूतै:-
surrounded by the Bhootas,
द्वारकाम् प्रदहन् दिश:
to Dwaaraka, burning the quarters

He, surrounded by the Bhootas, with his palm trees like long legs, ran, causing the surface of the earth to tremble, towards Dwaaraka, burning the directions.


तमभिचारदहनमायान्तं द्वारकौकस: ।

विलोक्य तत्रसु: सर्वे वनदाहे मृगा यथा ॥३५॥


तम्-अभिचार-दहनम्-
that Abhichaara fire
आयान्तम् द्वारका-औकस:
approaching, Dwaaraka residents
विलोक्य तत्रसु: सर्वे
seeing, were afraid all
वन-दाहे मृगा: यथा
on a forest fire deers as

The residents of Dwaaraka saw the Abhichaara fire approaching, and all of them were full of fear just as the deers are on seeing the forest fire.


अक्षै: सभायां क्रीडन्तं भगवन्तं भयातुरा: ।

त्राहि त्राहि त्रिलोकेश वह्ने: प्रदहत: पुरम् ॥३६॥


अक्षै: सभायाम् क्रीडन्तम्
the dice (game) in the assembly playing,
भगवन्तम् भय-आतुरा:
to The Lord, fear overwhelmed,
त्राहि त्राहि त्रिलोकेश
save, save, O of the three worlds' The Ruler!
वह्ने: प्रदहत: पुरम्
from the fire, burning the city

Overwhelmed with fear, they called The Lord, Who was playing the dice in His court, ' O Ruler of the three world's, save us, save us, from the fire that is burning the city.'


श्रुत्वा तज्जनवैक्लव्यं दृष्ट्वा स्वानां च साध्वसम् ।

श्ररण्य: सम्प्रहस्याह मा भैष्टेत्यवितास्म्यहम् ॥३७॥


श्रुत्वा तत्-जन-
hearing that of the people
वैक्लव्यम् दृष्ट्वा
the distress seeing
स्वानाम् च साध्वसम्
of own people and terror
श्ररण्य: सम्प्रहस्य-आह
The Protector smilingly said,
मा भैष्ट-इति-
'Do not be afraid, thus,
अवितास्मि-अहम्
Protector am I'

The Protector, hearing the distress, and seeing the terro of His own people, He smilingly said, 'Do not be afraid, I will protect you.' thus.


सर्वस्यान्तर्बहि: साक्षी कृत्यां माहेश्वरीं विभु: ।

विज्ञाय तद्विघातार्थं पार्श्वस्थं चक्रमादिशत् ॥३८॥


सर्वस्य-अन्त:-बहि: साक्षी
of all, the inside and outside The Witness,
कृत्याम् माहेश्वरीम्
Krityaa of the Maaheshvari
विभु: विज्ञाय
The Almighty, knowing,
तत्-विघात-अर्थम्
its distruction for the purpose
पार्श्वस्थम् चक्रम्-आदिशत्
nearby placed discuss ordered

The Amighty, The Witness of all of what is inside and outside of the beings, knowing it to be Krityaa of Maheshwara, (Lord Shiva), ordered His discuss, standing by His side, for the purpose of distructing it.


तत् सूर्यकोटिप्रतिमं सुदर्शनं जाज्वल्यमानं प्रलयनलप्रभम् ।

स्वतेजसा खं ककुभोऽथ रोदसी चक्रं मुकुन्दास्त्रमथाग्निमार्दयत् ॥३९॥


तत् सूर्य-कोटि-प्रतिमम्
that, suns millions like
सुदर्शनम् जाज्वल्यमानम्
Sudarshana, flaming,
प्रलय-अनल-प्रभम्
the distruction fire like
स्व-तेजसा खम्
by own brilliance, the sky,
ककुभ:-अथ रोदसी
the directions and the heaven
चक्रम् मुकुन्द-अस्त्रम्-
the discus, of Lord Mukunda the missile
अथ-अग्निम्-अर्दयत्
then, the fire subdued

That Sudarshana discus, the missile of Lord Mukunda, shining like a million suns, flaming like the fire of distruction, with its own brilliance, lighted the sky, the directions and the heavens and then subdued that fire.


कृत्यानल: प्रतिहत: स रथाङ्गपाणेरस्त्रौजसा स नृप भग्नमुखो निवृत्त: ।

वाराणसीं परिसमेत्य सुदक्षिणं तं सर्त्विग्जनं समदहत् स्वकृतोऽभिचार: ॥४०॥


कृत्या-अनल: प्रतिहत: स:
the Krityaa fire struck, he,
रथाङ्गपाणे:-अस्त्र-ओजसा
by The discus holder Lord's weapon's lustre,
स: नृप
he, O King!
भग्न-मुख: निवृत्त:
smashed faced, returned
वाराणसीम् परिसमेत्य
to Varanasi, came back
सुदक्षिणम् तम् स-ऋत्विक्-जनम्
Sudakshina, him, with the presiding priests
समदहत् स्व-कृत:-अभिचार:
burnt up, by himself released Abhichaara

O King! That Kritya fire was struck by the force of The discus Holder Lord's missile. Its face was smashed and it returned to Varanasi, and coming back was burnt along with the presiding priests, by Abhichaara which he had himself released.


चक्रं च विष्णोस्तदनुप्रविष्टं वाराणसीं साट्टसभालयापणाम् ।

सगोपुराट्टालककोष्ठसङ्कुलां सकोशहस्त्यश्वरथान्नशालाम् ॥४१॥


चक्रम् च विष्णो:-
the discus of Vishnu
तत्-अनुप्रविष्टम् वाराणसीम्
that with entered Varanasi
स-अट्ट-सभालय-आपणाम्
with the high towers, assembly halls, markets,
स-गोपुर-अट्टालक-
gates, houses,
कोष्ठ-सङ्कुलाम्
store houses, surrounding
स-कोश-हस्ति-अश्व-
treasuries, elephants, horses,
रथ-अन्न-शालाम्
chariots, granneries,

Following that fire, the discus of Vishnu entered Varanasi and surrounded the high towers, with assembly halls, markets, gates, houses, store houses, treasuries, elephants, horses, chariots, granneries,…..


दग्ध्वा वाराणसीं सर्वां विष्णोश्चक्रं सुदर्शनम् ।

भूय: पार्श्वमुपातिष्ठत् कृष्णस्याक्लिष्टकर्मण: ॥४२॥


दग्ध्वा वाराणसीम् सर्वाम्
burning Varanasi the whole
विष्णो:-चक्रम् सुदर्शनम्
Vishnu's discus Sudarshana
भूय: पार्श्वम्-उपातिष्ठत्
again at the side stood
कृष्णस्य-अक्लिष्ट-कर्मण:
of Krishna, He of pure actions

Vishnu's discus, Sudarshana, burnt the whole of Kashi, and again came and stood beside Krishna, Who is of unblemished actions.


य एतच्छ्रावयेन्मर्त्य उत्तमश्लोकविक्रमम् ।

समाहितो वा शृणुयात् सर्वपापै: प्रमुच्यते ॥४३॥


य: एतत्-श्रावयेत्-मर्त्य:
whoever, this relates, mortal
उत्तमश्लोक-विक्रमम्
of the glorious Lord's exploits,
समाहित: वा शृणुयात्
attentively, or listens to
सर्व-पापै: प्रमुच्यते
from all sins is free

This exploit of the glorious Lord, whoever relates, or hears attentively, is rid of all sins.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां

दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे पौण्ड्रकादिवधो

नाम षट्षष्टितमोऽध्याय: ॥६६॥
