रजा-उवाच -
The King said -
भूयोऽहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि रामस्याद्भुतकर्मण: ।

अनन्तस्याप्रमेयस्य यदन्यत् कृतवान् प्रभु: ॥१॥


भूय:-अहम् श्रोतुम्-इच्छामि
again, I to hear long
रामस्य-अद्भुत-कर्मण:
of Balaraama, of wonderful deeds,
अनन्तस्य-अप्रमेयस्य
of The Infinite, unfathomable,
यत्-अन्यत् कृतवान् प्रभु:
which other did The Almighty

I, again, long to hear of the other wonderful and unfathomable deeds that The Infinite Almighty Lord Balaraama did.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
नरकस्य सखा कश्चिद् द्विविदो नाम वानर: ।

सुग्रीवसचिव: सोऽथ भ्राता मैन्दस्य वीर्यवान् ॥२॥


नरकस्य सखा कश्चिद्
Naraka's friend some
द्विविदो नाम वानर:
Dwiwida named monkey
सुग्रीवसचिव: सोऽथ
Sugreeva's minister, and
भ्राता मैन्दस्य वीर्यवान्
brother of Mainda the mighty

A monkey named Dwiwida, was Naraka's friend, Sugreeva's minister, and also the mighty brother of Mainda.


सख्यु: सोऽपचितिं कुर्वन् वानरो राष्ट्रविप्लवम् ।

पुरग्रामाकरान् घोषानदहद् वह्निमुत्सृजन् ॥३॥


सख्यु: स:-अपचितिम्
of the friend vengeance
कुर्वन् वानर:
wreaking, the monkey
राष्ट्र-विप्लवम्
in the country raised havoc
पुर-ग्राम-आकरान्
the towns, villages, mines,
घोषान्-अदहत्
cowherd sheds, burnt down
वह्निम्-उत्सृजन्
fire setting

The monkey in a bid to wreak vengeance for his friend, raised havoc in the country, and set fire to the towns, villages, mines, and cowherd sheds, and burnt them down.


क्वचित् स शैलानुत्पाट्य तैर्देशान् समचूर्णयत् ।

आनर्तान् सुतरामेव यत्रास्ते मित्रहा हरि: ॥४॥


क्वचित् स:
sometimes, he
शैलान्-उत्पाट्य
the mountains uprooting,
तै:-देशान् समचूर्णयत्
by them the territories smashed
आनर्तान् सुतराम्-एव
Aanarta specially also,
यत्र-आस्ते मित्रहा हरि:
where, lived firiend's slayer, Shree Hari

Sometimes, he would uproot the mountains and with them smash the whole territories, specially the territory of Aanarta, where the slayer of his friend, Shree Hari lived.


क्वचित् समुद्रमध्यस्थो दोर्भ्यामुत्क्षिप्य तज्जलम् ।

देशान् नागायुतप्राणो वेलाकूलानमज्जयत् ॥५॥


क्वचित् समुद्र-मध्यस्थ:
at times, in the ocean's middle standing,
दोर्भ्याम्-उत्क्षिप्य
with both arms splashed
तत्-जलम् देशान्
the water, the territories,
नागा-अयुत-प्राण:
with elephants ten thousand strength
वेला-कूलान्-अमज्जयत्
the ocean on the shore submerged

At times, he would stand in the middle of the ocean, and with his two arms, having the strength of ten thousand elephants, splashed its water, and submerged the terroteries on the shore of the ocean.


आश्रमानृषिमुख्यानां कृत्वा भग्नवनस्पतीन् ।

अदूषयच्छकृन्मूत्रैरग्नीन् वैतानिकान् खल: ॥६॥


आश्रमान्-ऋषि-मुख्यानाम्
of the hermitages of sages prominent
कृत्वा भग्न-वनस्पतीन्
cutting and destroying the vegetation,
अदूषयत्-शकृन्-मूत्रै:-
rendered impure with excrement and urine
अग्नीन् वैतानिकान् खल:
the fires sacrificial, the wicked

He, the wicked cut off the trees in the hermitages of prominent sages and destroyed the vegetation, and rendered the sacrificial fires impure by excrement and urine.


पुरुषान् योषितो दृप्त: क्ष्माभृद्द्रोणीगुहासु स: ।

निक्षिप्य चाप्यधाच्छैलै: पेशस्कारीव कीटकम् ॥७॥


पुरुषान् योषित: दृप्त:
the men and women, he, power intoxicated,
क्ष्माभृत्-द्रोणी-
in the mountain valleys
गुहासु स:
caves, he,
निक्षिप्य च-अप्यधात्-शैलै:
throwing and blocked with rocks
पेशस्कारी-इव कीटकम्
the wasp like the worm

He, power intoxicated, threw the men and women in the valleys and caves of the mountains and blocked them with rocks, just like the wasp blocks the worm.


एवं देशान् विप्रकुर्वन् दूषयंश्च कुलस्त्रिय: ।

श्रुत्वा सुललितं गीतं गिरिं रैवतकं ययौ ॥८॥


एवम् देशान् विप्रकुर्वन्
thus the land destroying
दूषयन्-च कुल-स्त्रिय:
and defaming the high-born women.
श्रुत्वा सुललितम् गीतम्
hearing sweet music,
गिरिम् रैवतकम् ययौ
to the mountain Raivataka went

He, thus, destroyed the land and defamed the high-born women. Then, on hearing sweet music, he went to Raivataka mountain.


तत्रापश्यद् यदुपतिं रामं पुष्करमालिनम् ।

सुदर्शनीयसर्वाङ्गं ललनायूथमध्यगम् ॥९॥


तत्र-पश्यदत्
there, saw
यदुपतिम् रामम्
of the Yadu's the protector, Balaraama
पुष्कर-मालिनम्
lotus garland wearing
सुदर्शनीय-सर्व-अङ्गम्
godd to look at in the whole body,
ललना-यूथ-मध्यगम्
young girls' bevy in the midst

There, he saw the protector of the Yadus', Balaraama, wearing a garland of lotus, with a body good to look at, in the midst of a bevy of young girls.


गायन्तं वारुणीं पीत्वा मदविह्वललोचनम् ।

विभ्राजमानं वपुषा प्रभिन्नमिव वारणम् ॥१०॥


गायन्तम् वारुणीम् पीत्वा
singing, Vaaruni drunk,
मद-विह्वल-लोचनम्
intoxication over-powered eyed,
विभ्राजमानम् वपुषा
glowing physically,
प्रभिन्नम्-इव वारणम्
in rut like an elephant

He was singing, having drunk Vaaruni, his eyes were over-powered with intoxication and his body glowed like that of an elephant in rut.


दुष्ट: शाखामृग: शाखामारूढ: कम्पयन् द्रुमान् ।

चक्रे किलकिलाशब्दमात्मानं सम्प्रदर्शयन् ॥११॥


दुष्ट: शाखामृग:
the wicked monkey
शाखाम्-आरूढ:
the branches climbing
कम्पयन् द्रुमान्
shook the trees,
चक्रे किलकिला-शब्दम्-
made chattering sounds
आत्मानम् सम्प्रदर्शयन्
to himself show

The wicked monkey climbed the branches, and shook the trees, and made chattering sounds in order to make himself noticed.


तस्य धार्ष्ट्यं कपेर्वीक्ष्य तरुण्यो जातिचापला: ।

हास्यप्रिया विजहसुर्बलदेवपरिग्रहा: ॥१२॥


तस्य धार्ष्ट्यम्
his audacity
कपे:-वीक्ष्य
of the monkey observing,
तरुण्य: जाति-चापला:
the damsels, by nature sportive,
हास्य-प्रिया विजहसु:-
fun fond of, laughed,
बलदेव-परिग्रहा:
Balaraama's women

The damsels, by nature sportive and fun loving, observed the monkey's audacity and being with Balaraama, laughed loudly.


ता हेलयामास कपिर्भ्रूक्षेपै: सम्मुखादिभि: ।

दर्शयन् स्वगुदं तासां रामस्य च निरीक्षत: ॥१३॥


ता: हेलयामास
them insulted
कपि:-भ्रू-क्षेपै:
the monkey by eye-brows twisting,
सम्मुख-आदिभि:
in front face making and others,
दर्शयन् स्व-गुदम् तासाम्
exposing own buttocks to them
रामस्य च निरीक्षत:
as Balarama looked on

Even as Balaraama looked on, the monkey insulted them by twisting his eye-brows, making faces at them, and exposing his hind parts to them.


तं ग्राव्णा प्राहरत् क्रुद्धोबल: प्रहरतां वर: ।

स वञ्चयित्वा ग्रावाणं मदिराकलशं कपि: ॥१४॥


तम् ग्राव्णा प्राहरत्
him with a stone, struck
क्रुद्ध:-बल:
enraged Balaraama
प्रहरताम् वर:
of the strickers' the best,
स: वञ्चयित्वा ग्रावाणम्
he escaping the stone,
मदिरा-कलशम् कपि:
the liquor pot, the monkey

Enraged Balaraama, the best of strickers, hit the monkey with a slab of stone. The monkey, however dodged the stone and took the pot of liquor (Vaaruni).


गृहीत्वा हेलयामास धूर्तस्तं कोपयन् हसन् ।

निर्भिद्य कलशं दुष्टो वासांस्यास्फालयद् बलम् ॥१५॥


गृहीत्वा हेलयामास
taking, defying,
धूर्त:-तम्
the wicked, Him,
कोपयन् हसन्
teasing into anger, laughing,
निर्भिद्य कलशम् दुष्ट:
braking the pot, the notorious,
वासांसि-आस्फालयत् बलम्
the cloathes tore, Balaraama

The wicked notorious monkey defied and annoyed Balaraama into anger, broke the pot and tore the cloathes of the women, and laughed.


कदर्थीकृत्यं बलवान् विप्रचक्रे मदोद्धत: ।

तं तस्याविनयं दृष्ट्वा देशांश्च तदुपद्रुतान् ॥१६॥


कदर्थी-कृत्यम्
the deffient attitude,
बलवान् विप्रचक्रे
of the strong , caused havoc
मद-उद्धत:
intoxication over powered,
तम् तस्य-अविनयम् दृष्ट्वा
to Him, his ruthlessness seeing
देशान्-च तत्-उपद्रुतान्
the land and by him destroyed

The strong and intoxication over-powered monkey showed his defient attitude, to Balaraama. Observing his ruthlessness, and the distruction of the land,…


क्रुद्धो मुसलमादत्त हलं चारिजिघांसया ।

द्विविदोऽपि महावीर्य: शालमुद्यम्य पाणिना ॥१७॥


क्रुद्ध: मुसलम्-आदत्त
enraged, the pestle took,
हलम् च-अरि-जिघांसया
the plough and the enemy to kill intending
द्विविद:-अपि महा-वीर्य:
Dwiwida also of great might
शालम्-उद्यम्य पाणिना
a sal tree lifting up with hand

Enraged, Balaraama took up his weapons, the pestle and the plough wanting to kill the enemy. Dwiwida also lifted up a sal tree with one hand,….


अभ्येत्य तरसा तेन बलं मूर्धन्यताडयत् ।

तं तु सङ्कर्षणो मूर्ध्नि पतन्तमचलो यथा ॥१८॥


अभ्येत्य तरसा तेन
charging in speed
बलम् मूर्धनि-अताडयत्
by that, on the head hit
तम् तु सङ्कर्षण:
that indeed, Balaraama
मूर्ध्नि पतन्तम्-
on the head falling,
अचल: यथा
mountain like

He charged in speed and hit Balaraama on the head. Balaraama, indeed, mountain like, that tree falling on the head,….


प्रतिजग्राह बलवान् सुनन्देनाहनच्च तम् ।

मुसलाह्तमस्तिष्को विरेजे रक्तधारया ॥१९॥


प्रतिजग्राह बलवान्
cought hold the mighty (Balaraama)
सुनन्देन-अहनत्-च तम्
with Sunanda (the pestle) hit and him
मुसल-आह्त-मस्तिष्क:
with the pestle hit head
विरेजे रक्त-धारया
he shone with the blood streaming

Balaraama cought hold of that tree, and hit him with the pestle Sunanda. He, hit with the pestle on the head, with blood streaming, shone,…..


गिरिर्यथा गौरिकया प्रहारं नानुचिन्तयन् ।

पुनरन्यं समुत्क्षिप्य कृत्वा निष्पत्रमोजसा ॥२०॥


गिरि:-यथा गौरिकया
a mountain like with Geru, (a chalk like red paste)
प्रहारम् न-अनुचिन्तयन्
the strick not heeding
पुन:-अन्यम् समुत्क्षिप्य
again he uprooted
कृत्वा निष्पत्रम्-ओजसा
making leaf-less violently

He shone like a mountain with Geru, a chalk like red paste. He did not heed the strike and uprooted another tree violently, making it leaf-less.


तेनाहनत् सुसंक्रुद्धस्तं बल: शतधाच्छिनत् ।

ततोऽन्येन रुषा जघ्ने तं चापि शतधाच्छिनत् ॥२१॥


तेन-अहनत्
by that hit,
सुसंक्रुद्ध:-तम् बल:
even more angered, that Balaraama
शतधा-अच्छिनत्
into a hundred split
तत:-अन्येन रुषा जघ्ने
then, with another, in rage, hit
तम् च-अपि शतधा-अच्छिनत्
that and also into hundred pieces split

Andeven more angered, he hit with that. Balaraama split that into a hundred pieces. Then, in rage he took another tree and hit with that and, that too, Balaraama split into hundred pieces.


एवं युध्यन् भगवता भग्ने भग्ने पुन: पुन: ।

आकृष्य सर्वतो वृक्षान् निर्वृक्षमकरोद् वनम् ॥२२॥


एवम् युध्यन् भगवता
thus fighting with The Lord,
भग्ने भग्ने
breaking breaking
पुन: पुन:
again and again,
आकृष्य सर्वत: वृक्षान्
uprooting from every where the trees,
निर्वृक्षम्-अकरोद् वनम्
tree-less rendered the forest

Thus fighting with The Lord, and again and again breaking the trees, he uprooted the trees from everywhere and rendered the forest tree-less.


ततोऽमुञ्चच्छिलावर्षं बलस्योपर्यमर्षित: ।

तत् सर्वं चूर्णयामास लीलया मुसलायुध: ॥२३॥


तत:-अमुञ्चत्-
then discharged
शिला-वर्षम्
stones rain
बलस्य-उपरि-अमर्षित:
Balaraama upon, in anger,
तत् सर्वम् चूर्णयामास
that all powdered
लीलया मुसल-आयुध:
sportingly, with pestle weapon

Then, enraged, the monkey rained stones on Balaraama, Who sportingly rendered them into powder.


स बाहू तालसङ्काशौ मुष्टीकृत्य कपीश्वर: ।

आसाद्य रोहिणीपुत्रं ताभ्यां वक्षस्यरूरुजत् ॥२४॥


स: बाहू ताल-सङ्काशौ
he, arms palm tree like
मुष्टी-कृत्य कपीश्वर:
fists forming, the monkey leader,
आसाद्य रोहिणी-पुत्रम्
approaching Rohini's son
ताभ्याम् वक्षसि-अरूरुजत्
with them on the chest struck

The monkey leader, with his palm like arms formed fists and approaching Rohini's son, Balaraama, struck him on the chest with them.


यादवेन्द्रोऽपि तं दोर्भ्यां त्यक्त्वा मुसललाङ्गले ।

जत्रावभ्यर्दयत्क्रुद्ध: सोऽपतद् रुधिरं वमन् ॥२५॥


यादवेन्द्र:-अपि
of Yadus' the Lord, also,
तम् दोर्भ्याम्
him with both arms,
त्यक्त्वा मुसल-लाङ्गले
leaving aside the pestle and plough
जत्रौ-अभ्यर्दयत्-क्रुद्ध:
on the collar bones, hit hard, enraged,
स:-अपतत् रुधिरम् वमन्
he, fell blood vomiting

The Lord of the Yadus' also, left aside the pestle and the plough and with both His arms hit him on the collar-bones, and the monkey fell down vomitting blood.


चकम्पे तेन पतता सटङ्क: सवनस्पति: ।

पर्वत: कुरुशार्दूल वायुना नौरिवाम्भसि ॥२६॥


चकम्पे तेन पतता
trembled by his falling
सटङ्क:
with the tops,
सवनस्पति: पर्वत:
with the trees, the mountain
कुरुशार्दूल
O Kuru lion!
वायुना नौ:-इव-अम्भसि
by wind boat like in the water

O Kuru lion, Parikshit! As the monkey fell, the mountain trembled with the trees and the peaks, like a boat trembles in water.


जयशब्दो नम: शब्द: साधु साध्विति चाम्बरे ।

सुरसिद्धमुनीन्द्राणामासीत् कुसुमवर्षिणाम् ॥२७॥


जय-शब्द:
'Victory' word,
नम: शब्द:
'Salutations' word,
साधु साधु-इति च-अम्बरे
'Well done well done! Thus in the heavens
सुर-सिद्ध-मुनीन्द्राणाम्-
of the gods' Siddhas and great sages
आसीत् कुसुम-वर्षिणाम्
was there, flowers showering

There in the heavens, the words 'Victory', Salutations', 'Well done well done!' thus the were shouted by the gods, Siddhas and great sages, as they showered flowers.


एवं निहत्य द्विविदं जगद्व्यतिकरावहम् ।

संस्तूयमानो भगवाञ्जनै: स्वपुरमाविशत् ॥२८॥


एवम् निहत्य द्विविदम्
thus killing Dwiwida,
जगत्-अव्यतिकरावहम्
the world desolating,
संस्तूयमान: भगवान्-जनै:
applauded The Lord by the people
स्व-पुरम्-आविशत्
own city returned to

Thus, killing Dwiwida, who was desolating the world, The Lord was applauded by the people as He returned to His own city.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां
