Shree Shuka said -
दुर्योधनसुतां राजन् लक्ष्मणां समितिञ्जय ।
स्वयंवरस्थामहरत् साम्बो जाम्बवतीसुत: ॥१॥

Duryodhana's daughter,
राजन्
O King!
लक्ष्मणाम् समितिञ्जय:
Laxmanaa, in the battle victorious,
स्वयंवर-स्थाम्-
in the self selecting partner assembly, called
अहरत् साम्ब:
abducted Saamba,
जाम्बवती-सुत:
Jaambavati's son
O King! Jaambavati's son, Saamba, victorious in the battles, abducted Laxmanaa, Duryodhana's daughter, from the assembly which she had called to select her own partner.
कौरवा: कुपिता ऊचुर्दुर्विनीतोऽयमर्भक: ।
कदर्थीकृत्य न: कन्यामकामामहरद् बलात् ॥२॥
कौरवा: कुपिता: ऊचु:-
the Kauravas, enraged said,
दुर्विनीत:-अयम्-अर्भक:
'arrogant is this boy,
कदर्थीकृत्य न:
insulting us,
कन्याम्-अकामाम्-
the girl not desiring
अहरत् बलात्
carried away forcefully'
The enraged Kauravas said, 'This boy is arrogant. Belittling us, he has forcefully carried away the girl, who did not desire him to do so.'
बध्नीतेमं दुर्विनीतं किं करिष्यन्ति वृष्णय: ।
येऽस्मत्प्रसादोपचितां दत्तां नो भुञ्जते महीम् ॥३॥
बध्नीत-इमम् दुर्विनीतम्
imprison this imprudent (boy)
किम् करिष्यन्ति वृष्णय:
what will do the Vrishnis?
ये-अस्मत्-प्रसाद-उपचिताम्
who by our benediction, thriving
दत्ताम् न:
and conferred by us
भुञ्जते महीम्
rule the land
"Imprison this imprudent boy. What will the Vrishnis do? Who are ruling the land which is gifted by us and which is thriving by our benediction."
निगृहीतं सुतं श्रुत्वा यद्येष्यन्तीह वृष्णय: ।
भग्नदर्पा: शमं यान्ति प्राणा इव सुसंयता: ॥४॥
निगृहीतम् सुतम् श्रुत्वा
imprisoned son hearing
यदि-एष्यन्ति-इह वृष्णय:
if come here the Vrishnees
भग्न-दर्पा: शमम् यान्ति
curbed prides, controlled will be,
प्राणा: इव सुसंयता:
as the sense, when well tamed
'On hearing of the bondage of their son, if the Vrishnees happen to come here, their pride will be curbed, and their arrogance will be controlled, just as the senses are controlled when well tamed.'
इति कर्ण: शलो भूरिर्यज्ञकेतु: सुयोधन: ।
साम्बमारेभिरे बद्धुं कुरुवृद्धानुमोदिता: ॥५॥

Saamba, proceeded to capture
कुरु-वृद्ध-अनुमोदिता:
by the Kuru elders approved
Thus, Karna, Sala, Bhoorisravaa, Yagyaketu, Suyodhana, proceeded to capture Saamba, with the approval of the Kuru elders.
दृष्ट्वानुधावत: साम्बो धार्तराष्ट्रान् महारथ: ।
प्रगृह्य रुचिरं चापं तस्थौ सिंह इवैकल: ॥६॥
दृष्ट्वा-अनुधावत: साम्ब:
seeing running after, Saamba,
धार्तराष्ट्रान् महारथ:
the Dritaraashtra sons, the great charioteer,
प्रगृह्य रुचिरम् चापम्
getting hold of a beautiful bow,
तस्थौ सिंह: इव-एकल:
paused, lion like, all alone
The great charioteer Saamba saw the sons of Dhritaraashtra following him. He took hold of a fine bow, and defiently paused, standing single like a lion.
तं ते जिघृक्षव: क्रुद्धास्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति भाषिण: ।
आसाद्य धन्विनो बाणै: कर्णाग्रण्य समाकिरन् ॥७॥
तम् ते जिघृक्षव:
him, they eager to capture,
क्रुद्धा:-तिष्ठ तिष्ठ-इति
in rage, 'Stop, stop' thus
भाषिण: आसाद्य
calling, approaching
धन्विन: बाणै:
the bow wielders, with arrows
कर्ण-अग्रण्य समाकिरन्
karna led by showered
In a fit of rage, and eager to capture him, they, the bow wielders, led by Karna, called, 'Stop, stop,' thus, and approaching him, showered him with arrows.
सोऽपविद्ध: कुरुश्रेष्ठ कुरुभिर्यदुनन्दन: ।
नामृष्यत्तदचिन्त्यार्भ: सिंह क्षुद्रमृगैरिव ॥८॥

O Pareekshita!

by the Kauravas, of the Yadus the delight,
न-अमृष्यत्-तत्-
did not appreciate that
अचिन्त्य-अर्भ:
the uncomprehensible (Krishna's) son
सिंह क्षुद्र-मृगै:-इव
lion petty animals' (attack) like
O Pareekshita! He, the delight of the Yadus', the son of the incomprehensible Krishna, did not appreciate to be attacked like that, by the Kauravas, just as a lion by petty animals.
विस्फूर्ज्य रुचिरं चापं सर्वान् विव्याध सायकै: ।
कर्णादीन् षड्रथान् वीरास्तावद्भिर्युगपत् पृथक् ॥९॥
विस्फूर्ज्य रुचिरम् चापम्
twanging the splendid bow,
सर्वान् विव्याध सायकै:
all hitting with arrows,
कर्ण-आदीन् षट्-रथान्
Karna and others the six charioteers,
वीरा:-तावद्भि:-
the heroes, with as many
युगपत् पृथक्
togather, and individually
Saamba twanging his splendid bow hit the six Kaurava heroes, Karna and others with as many arrows, togather and individually.
चतुर्भिश्चतुरो वाहानेकैकेन च सारथीन् ।
रथिनश्च महेष्वासांस्तस्य तत्तेऽभ्यपूजयन् ॥१०॥
चतुर्भि:-चतुर:
with four the four
वाहान्-एक-एकेन
horses, by one each

and the charioteers,
रथिन:-च महेष्वासान्-
in the chariot and the warriors,
तस्य तत्-ते-

He hit the four horses with four arrows, and by one each the charioteers and the warriors seated there. They appreciated that strike of his.
तं तु ते विरथं चक्रुश्चत्वारश्चतुरो हयान् ।
एकस्तु सारथिं जघ्ने चिच्छेदान्य: शरासनम् ॥११॥

They rendered him chariot-less. Four of them killed the four horses, one of them killed the charioteer, and the other shattered his bow.
तं बद्ध्वा विरथीकृत्य कृच्छ्रेण कुरवो युधि ।
कुमारं स्वस्य कन्या च स्वपुरं जयिनोऽविशन् ॥१२॥
तम् बद्ध्वा विरथी-कृत्य
him capturing, chariot depriving of
कृच्छ्रेण कुरव: युधि
with difficulty the Kauravas, in the battle,
कुमारम् स्वस्य कन्या च
the young boy, own daughter and,
स्व-पुरम् जयि:-अविशन्
to own town the conquerers, entered
The Kauravas, in the battle, with difficulty, deprived him of the chariot and captured him. The conquerers, then entered their own city with the boy and their own daughter.
तच्छ्रुत्वा नारदोक्तेन राजन् सञ्जातमन्यव: ।
कुरून् प्रत्युद्यमं चक्रुरुग्रसेनप्रचोदिता: ॥१३॥

towards the Kurus preparations started
उग्रसेन-प्रचोदिता:

O King! Hearing that from Naarada, the Yadus were greatly angered, and began preparation towards attacking the Kurus as directed by Ugrasena.
सान्तयित्वा तु तान् राम: सन्नद्धान् वृष्णिपुङ्गवान् ।
नैच्छत् कुरूणां वृष्णीनां कलिं कलिमलापह: ॥१४॥
सान्तयित्वा तु तान्
pecifying, indeed , them,
राम: सन्नद्धान्
Balaraama, the bent upon
वृष्णि-पुङ्गवान्
Vrishni leaders,did not want
न-ऐच्छत् कुरूणाम् वृष्णीनाम्

combat, the Kali impurities destroyer
The destroyer of the impurities of Kaliyuga, Balaraama, pecified the Yaadava leaders who were bent upon fighting, as He did not approve of a combat between the Kurus and the Vrishnis.
जगाम हास्तिनपुरं रथेनादित्यवर्चसा ।
ब्राह्मणै: कुलवृद्धैश्च वृतश्चन्द्र इव ग्रहै: ॥१५॥
जगाम हास्तिनपुरम्
went to Hastinaapura,
रथेन-आदित्य-वर्चसा
by a chariot sun like in splendour,
ब्राह्मणै: कुल-वृद्धै:-च
by the Braahmins and by the race elders
वृत:-चन्द्र इव ग्रहै:
surrounded, the moon like by the planets
He went away to Hastinaapura in a chariot as lusterous as the Sun, along with the Braahmins and the elders of the race, like the moon suurounded by the planets.
गत्वा गजाह्वयं रामो बाह्योपवनमास्थित: ।
उद्धवं प्रेषयामास धृतराष्ट्रं बुभुत्सया ॥१६॥
गत्वा गजाह्वयम् राम:
reaching Hastinaapura
बाह्य-उपवनम्-आस्थित:
outside in a garden stopped,
उद्धवम् प्रेषयामास
Uddhava sent
धृतराष्ट्रम् बुभुत्सया
to Dhritaraashtra, to ascertain (the situation)
Having reached Hastinaapura, Balaraama stopped in a garden outside the city, and sent Uddhava to Dhritaraashtra to ascertain the situation.
सोऽभिवन्द्याम्बिकापुत्रं भीष्मं द्रोणं च वाह्निकम् ।
दुर्योधनं च विधिवद् राममागतमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥

he (Uddhava) greeted
अम्बिका-पुत्रम् भीष्मं
Ambika's son Bheeshma,
द्रोणं च वाह्निकम्
Drona and Vaanhika
दुर्योधनं च विधिवद्
Duryodhana and duly,
रामम्-आगतम्-अब्रवीत्
Balaraama has come, said
He duly greeted Ambika's son Bheeshma, Drona, Vaanhika and Duryodhana, and informed of the arrival of Balaraama.
तेऽतिप्रीतास्तमाकर्ण्य प्राप्तं रामं सुहृत्तमम् ।
तमर्चयित्वाभिययु: सर्वे मङ्गलपाणय: ॥१८॥
ते-अति-प्रीता:-तम्-आकर्ण्य
they, very delighted, him hearing,
प्राप्तम् रामम् सुहृत्-तमम्
the arrival of Balaraama, the friend great,
तम्-अर्चयित्वा-
him honouring,
अभिययु: सर्वे
went out all
मङ्गल-पाणय:
with auspicious articles in hand
They honoured Uddhava and were very delighted to hear of the arrival of the great friend Balaraama. They all went out, with auspicious articles in hand, to meet him.
तं सङ्गम्य यथान्यायं गामर्ध्यं च निवेदयन् ।
तेषां ये तत्प्रभावज्ञा: प्रणेमु: शिरसा बलम् ॥१९॥
तम् सङ्गम्य
Him meeting,
यथा-न्यायम्
as per requiered,
गाम्-अर्ध्यम् च निवेदयन्
cow and water offering,
तेषाम् ये तत्-प्रभाव-ज्ञा:
among those, His greatness knowers
प्रणेमु: शिरसा बलम्
salutated with the head to Balaraama
Meeting Him, they offered water and cow as requiered for welcoming, and among those who knew of Balaraama's greatness, salutd Him with their heads bent down.
बन्धून् कुशलिन: श्रुत्वा पृष्ट्वा शिवमनामयम् ।
परस्परमथो रामो बभाषेऽविक्लवं वच: ॥२०॥
बन्धून् कुशलिन: श्रुत्वा
the friends' welfare hearing,
पृष्ट्वा शिवम्-अनामयम्
asking of their good and health,
परस्परम्-अथ:
mutually, then,
राम: बभाषे
Balaraama said,
विक्लवम् वच:
in fearless words
They mutually asked of the good and health of the friends and hearing of their welfare, Balaraam then said in fearless words,….
उग्रसेन: क्षितीशेशो यत् व आज्ञापयत् प्रभु: ।
तदव्यग्रधिय: श्रुत्वा कुरुध्वं माविलम्बितम् ॥२१॥
उग्रसेन: क्षिति-ईश-ईश:
Ugrasena, of the kings the king,
यत् व:
that which to you
आज्ञापयत् प्रभु:
has ordered, the mighty
तत्-अव्यग्र-धिय:
that, with attentive minds
श्रुत्वा कुरुध्वम्
hearing, should do
मा-विलम्बितम्
without delay
'What, the mighty lord of the kings, Ugrasena has ordered, you should hear with attentive minds, and do that without delay.'
यद् यूयं बहवस्त्वेकं जित्वाधर्मेण धार्मिकम् ।
अबध्नीताथ तन्मृष्ये बन्धूनामैक्यकाम्यया ॥२२॥
यत् यूयम् बहव:-
’that you all many
तु-एकम् जित्वा-
indeed the single conquering,
अधर्मेण धार्मिकम्
unrighteously, the righteous
अबध्नीत-अथ
have captivated, then,
तत्-मृष्ये बन्धूनाम्-
that (we) tolerate, of the friends'
ऐक्य-काम्यया
unity sake
'That many of you, indeed, have unrighteously won over the single handed righteous Saamba, and have kept him captive. We have tolerated this, just to maintain unity among friends.'
वीर्यशौर्यबलोन्नद्धमात्मशक्तिसमं वच: ।
कुरवो बलदेवस्य निशम्योचु: प्रकोपिता: ॥२३॥
वीर्य-शौर्य-बल-उन्नद्धम्-
with virility, strength, and gallantry inspired
आत्म-शक्ति-समम् वच:
self power equal to, words,
कुरव: बल-देवस्य
Kauravas of Balaraama
निशम्य-ऊचु: प्रकोपिता:
hearing said in anger
Inspired by virility, strength, and gallantry, and in keeping with His own power, the words Balaraama spoke, hearing them, the Kauravas said in anger,….
अहो महच्चित्रमिदं कालगत्या दुरत्यया ।
आरुरुक्षत्युपानद् वै शिरो मुकुटसेवितम् ॥२४॥
अहो महत्-चित्रम्-इदम्
'Alas! Very strange it is
काल-गत्या दुरत्यया
by the time's force, difficult to overcome,
आरुरुक्षति-उपानत्
wants to get on, the shoe,
वै शिर:
indeed the head
मुकुट-सेवितम्
by a diadem adorned
'Alas! It is very strange, that by the difficult to be overcome force of Time, the shoe wants to get on the head which is adorned by a crown.'
एते यौनेन सम्बद्धा: सहशय्यासनाशना: ।
वृष्णयस्तुल्यतां नीता अस्मद्दत्तनृपासना: ॥२५॥
एते यौनेन सम्बद्धा:
these, by conjugal ties bound,
सह-शय्या-आसन-अशना:
sharing the beds, seats, and food,
वृष्णय:-तुल्यताम् नीता:
the Vrishnees equal have arisen
अस्मत्-दत्त
by us given
नृप-आसना:
royal thrones
These Vrishnees, bound by conjugal ties, have arisen eaqual to us, and share our beds, seats and food, because of the royal thrones given to them, by us.
चामरव्यजने शङ्खमातपत्रं च पाण्डुरम् ।
किरीटमासनं शय्यां भुञ्जन्त्यस्मदुपेक्षया ॥२६॥
चामर-व्यजने शङ्खम्-
the chowrie, fan, conch,
आतपत्रम् च पाण्डुरम्
umbrella and white,
किरीटम्-आसनम्
crown, throne,
शय्याम् भुञ्जन्ति-
royal bed, enjoy
अस्मत्-उपेक्षया
at our cost
They enjoy the use of the chowrie, fan, conch, white umbrella, crown, throne, royal bed, at our cost.
अलं यदूनां नरदेवलाञ्छनैर्दातु: प्रतीपै: फणिनामिवामृतम् ।
येऽस्मत्प्रसादोपचिता हि यादवा आज्ञापयन्त्यद्य गतत्रपा बत ॥२७॥
अलम् यदूनाम्
enough of to the Yadus
नर-देव-लाञ्छनै:-
mens' gods' (kings) adornments,
दातु: प्रतीपै:
to the givers adverse,
फणिनाम्-इव-अमृतम्
of the snakes like nectar
ये-अस्मत्-प्रसाद-उपचिता:
who by our grace elevated
हि यादवा:
indeed the Yaadavas,
आज्ञापयन्ति-अद्य
are commanding today (us)
गत-त्रपा: बत
bereft of shame
Enough with the royal insignia given to the Yadus, who are adverse to the givers, just as the sanke is when given nectar. They, indeed, the Yaadavas, elevated by our grace, bereft of shame, are today commanding us.
कथमिन्द्रोऽपि कुरुभिर्भीष्मद्रोणार्जुनादिभि: ।
अदत्तमवरुन्धीत सिंहग्रस्तमिवोरण: ॥२८॥
कथम्-इन्द्र:-अपि
how can, Indra also
कुरुभि:-भीष्म-
by the Kurus, Bheeshma,
द्रोण-अर्जुन-आदिभि:
Drona, Arjuna and others
अदत्तम्-अवरुन्धीत
not given enjoy
सिंह-ग्रस्तम्-इव-उरण:
a lions prey like a ram
How can, even Indra enjoy that which is not given by the Kurus, Bheeshma, Drona Arjuna and others, just as a ram dare not take away the prey of a lion.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
जन्मबन्धुश्रियोन्नद्धमदास्ते भरतर्षभ ।
आश्राव्य रामं दुर्वाच्यमसभ्या: पुरमाविशन् ॥२९॥
जन्म-बन्धु-श्रिय:-
of lineage, associates and fortune
उन्नद्ध-मदा:-ते
swollen prides, they,
भरतर्षभ
O Scion of Bharat!
आश्राव्य राम दुर्वाच्यम्-
in the hearing of Balaraama, derogratory words
असभ्या: पुरम्-आविशन्
the uncultured the city entered
The Kauravas were swollen with pride for their lineage, associates, and fortune, and so they, the uncultured, spoke drerogatory words in the hearing of Balaraama, and returned to the city.
दृष्ट्वा कुरूणां दौ:शील्यं श्रुत्वावाच्यानि चाच्युत: ।
अवोचत् कोपसंरब्धो दुष्प्रेक्ष्य: प्रहसन् मुहु: ॥३०॥
दृष्ट्वा कुरूणाम् दौ:शील्यम्
observing the Kaurava's discoutsey,
श्रुत्वा-अवाच्यानि च-अच्युत:
and hearing their reproaches, and Balaraama
अवोचत् कोप-संरब्ध:
said, anger controlling,
दुष्प्रेक्ष्य: प्रहसन् मुहु:
difficult to be looked at, laughing in fits
The invincible Balaraama observed the discourtsey of the Kauravas and hearing their reproaches, and in controlling His anger He laughed in fits and looked terrible.
नूनं नानामदोन्नद्धा: शान्तिं नेच्छन्त्यसाधव: ।
तेषां हि प्रशमो दण्ड: पशूनां लगुडो यथा ॥३१॥
नूनं
undoubtedly,
नानामदोन्नद्धा:
by various prides intoxicated,
शान्तिं नेच्छन्त्यसाधव:
reconciliation do not want, the wicked
तेषां हि प्रशमो दण्ड:
for them, indeed to tame punishment is,
पशूनां लगुडो यथा
of the animals staff like
Undoubtedly, these wicked ones do not desire reconciliation as they are intoxicated with various kinds of pride. To tame them chastising is the answer as staff is for the animals.
अहो यदून् सुसंरब्धान् कृष्णं च कुपितं शनै: ।
सान्त्वयित्वाहमेतेषां शममिच्छन्निहागत: ॥३२॥
अहो यदून् सुसंरब्धान्
'Oh! The Yadus, highly enraged,
कृष्णम् च कुपितम्
Krishna and angered,
शनै: सान्त्वयित्वा-
slowly pacifying,
अहम्-एतेषाम् शमम्-इच्छन्-
I, their well desiring,
इह-आगत:
here have come 'Oh!
'Oh! Slowly pacifying the enraged Yadus and Krishna in wrath, I came here wanting to conciliate them.'
त इमे मन्दमतय: कलहाभिरता: खला: ।
तं मामवज्ञाय मुहुर्दुर्भाषान् मानिनोऽब्रुवन् ॥३३॥
ते इमे मन्द-मतय:
they, these dumb witted,
कलह-अभिरता: खला:
in discord engaged, wicked,
तम् माम्-अवज्ञाय
that, Me insulting,
मुहु:-दुर्भाषान्
incessently foul words
मानिन:-अब्रुवन्
the arrogant spoke
Those, these, dumb witted arrogant wicked ones, engaged in discord, insulted me, and incessently spoke foul words.
नोग्रसेन: किल विभुर्भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकेश्वर: ।
शक्रादयो लोकपाला यस्यादेशानुवर्तिन: ॥३४॥
न-उग्रसेन: किल
not just Ugrasena, indeed,
विभु:-भोज-वृष्णि-
the mighty, of Bhojas', Vrishnees',
अन्धक-ईश्वर:
and Andhakas' the Lord,
शक्र-आदय: लोकपाला:
Indra and the other gaurdians,
यस्य-आदेश-अनुवर्तिन:
whose commands follow
He is not just Ugrasena. He, the mighty is the lord of the Bhojas, Vrishnees, and the Andhakas. Even Indra and the other gaurdians carry out his commands.
सुधर्माऽऽक्रम्यते येन पारिजातोऽमराङ्घ्रिप: ।
आनीय भुज्यते सोऽसौ न किलाध्यासनार्हण: ॥३५॥
सुधर्मा-आक्रम्यते
Sudharmaa (hall) occupies,
येन पारिजात:-
by Whom Paarijaata,
अमर-अङ्घ्रिप:
the celestial tree,
आनीय भुज्यते स:-असौ
is brought and is enjoyed, He, this
न किल्-अध्यासन-अर्हण:
not certainly the throne deserves
Krishna occupies the Sudharmaa hall, and has brought the celestial tree Paareejaata, and enjoys it, even He does not deserve this throne.
यस्य पादयुगं साक्षात् श्रीरुपास्तेऽखिलेश्वरी ।
स नार्हति किल श्रीशो नरदेवपरिच्छदान् ॥३६॥
यस्य पाद-युगम्
Whose feet two
साक्षात् श्री:-
Herself Laxmi
उपास्ते-अखिल-ईश्वरी
adores, of the whole world The Goddess,
स: न-अर्हति
He does not deserve
किल श्रीश:
even though Laxmi's Lord,
नरदेव-परिच्छदान्
a king's insignia
Whose pair of feet Laxmi Herself, The Goddess of the whole world, adores,even He dows not deserve to have the king's insignia.
यस्याङ्घ्रिपङ्कजरजोऽखिललोकपालैर्मौल्युत्तमैर्धृतमुपासिततीर्थतीर्थम् ।
ब्रह्मा भवोऽहमपि यस्य कला: कलाया: श्रीञ्चोद्वहेम चिरमस्य नृपासनं क्व ॥३७॥
यस्य-अङ्घ्रि-पङ्कज-रज:-
Whose feet lotus dust
अखिल-लोकपालै:-
by all the Universal gaurdians,
मौलि-उत्तमै:-धृतम्-
crowns best borne
उपासित-तीर्थ-तीर्थम्
the worshipped holy places (render) holy,
ब्रह्मा भव:-अहम्-अपि
Brahmaa, Shiva, Myself also
यस्य कला: कलाया:
of Whose fraction the fractions,
श्री:-च-उद्वहेम चिरम्-
Laxmi and, bear eternally,
अस्य नृप-आसनम् क्व
His, king's throne where
The dust of Whose lotus feet is borne on the best of the crowns by the gaurdians of the universe, which renders the worshipped holy pilgrimages more holy, of Whose fraction, Brahmaa, Shiva, Myself and Laxmi bear eternally, the mere fractions, for Him what is a king's throne?
भुञ्जते कुरुभिर्दत्तं भूखण्डं वृष्णय: किल ।
उपानह: किल वयं स्वयं तु कुरव: शिर: ॥३८॥
भुञ्जते कुरुभि:-दत्तम्
rule by the Kurus bestowed
भूखण्डम् वृष्णय: किल
part of land,the Vrishnees, indeed,
उपानह: किल वयम्
shoes indeed are we,
स्वयम् तु कुरव: शिर:
themselves surely the Kurus are the head
The Vrishnees indeed, rule the part of land bestowed on them by the Kurus. Indeed, the Kurus themselves are the heads, while we are the shoes.
अहो ऐश्वर्यमत्तानां मत्तानामिव मानिनाम् ।
असम्बद्धा गिरो रूक्षा: क: सहेतानुशासिता ॥३९॥
अहो ऐश्वर्य-मत्तानाम्
Alas! Of the power intoxicated,
मत्तानाम्-इव
mad men like,
मानिनाम्
arrogant
असम्बद्धा: गिर: रूक्षा:
inconsequential words crude
क: सहेत-अनुशासिता
who will put up with, who are punishment accorders
Alas! Which people, who are capable of meeting punishments, will put up with the inconsequential crude words of the power intoxicated madmen like arrogant people.
अद्य निष्कौरवीं पृथ्वीं करिष्यामीत्यमर्षित: ।
गृहीत्वा हलमुत्तस्थौ दहन्निव जगत्त्रयम् ॥४०॥
अद्य निष्कौरवीम्
today, sans the Kauravas,
पृथ्वीम् करिष्यामि-
the earth will render
इति-अमर्षित:
thus in great anger,
गृहीत्वा हलम्-उत्तस्थौ
taking hold of the plaugh, got up
दहन्-इव जगत्-त्रयम्
bruning as if the worlds three
In great anger, he said, today I will render the earth without the Kauravas, and He got up, and picked up the plough, as if burning the three worlds.
लाङ्गलाग्रेण नगरमुद्विदार्य गजाह्वयम् ।
विचकर्ष स गङ्गायां प्रहरिष्यन्नमर्षित: ॥४१॥

Hastinaapura,
विचकर्ष स:
draged He
गङ्गायाम् प्रहरिष्यन्-
in the Ganges, to throw
अमर्षित:
in anger
In anger, with the front end of His weapon, the plaugh, He lifted up the town of Hastinaapura, and draged it, so as to throw it in the Ganges.
जलयानमिवाघूर्णं गङ्गायां नगरं पतत् ।
आकृष्यमाणमालोक्य कौरवा जातसम्भ्रमा: ॥४२॥
जलयानम्-इव-आघूर्णम्
a boat like rotating
गङ्गायाम् नगरम् पतन्
in the Ganges, the town falling,
आकृष्यमाणम्-
being dragged,
आलोक्य कौरवा:
observed the Kauravas,
जात-सम्भ्रमा:
were taken aback with dismay
As the town was being dragged into the Ganges it was rotating like a boat, observing that, the Kauravas were taken aback with dismay.
तमेव शरणं जग्मु: सकुटुम्बा जिजीविषव: ।
सलक्ष्मणं पुरस्कृत्य साम्बं प्राञ्जलय: प्रभुम् ॥४३॥
तम्-एव शरणम् जग्मु:
Him alone as shelter approached
सकुटुम्बा: जिजीविषव:
with the families, wanting to survive,
सलक्ष्मणम् पुरस्कृत्य साम्बम्
with Laxmanaa, in front and Saamba,
प्राञ्जलय: प्रभुम्
with joined palms, the almighty
To the all mighty Him, Balaraama alone, they approached as shelter, with joined palms, along with their families, with Samba and Laxmanaa leading.
राम रामाखिलाधार प्रभावं न विदाम ते ।
मूढानां न: कुबुद्धीनां क्षन्तुमर्हस्यतिक्रमम् ॥४४॥
राम राम-अखिल-आधार
'Raama! O Balaraama! Of all the support,
प्रभावम् न विदाम: ते
power did not know Your,
मूढानाम् न: कुबुद्धीनाम्
of the dumb, us, evil minded,
क्षन्तुम्-अर्हसि-अतिक्रमम्
to forgive are capable the transgression'
'Raama! O Balaraama! The support of all, (being Shesha), we the dumb did not know Your power. Do forgive the transgression of ours, the evil minded, as You are capable to do so,'
स्थित्युत्पत्त्यप्ययानां त्वमेक हेतुर्निराश्रय: ।
लोकान् क्रीडनकानीश क्रीडतस्ते वदन्ति हि ॥४५॥
स्थिति-उत्पत्ति-अप्ययानाम्
of the sustenance, creation and destruction
त्वम्-एक: हेतु:-
You alone are The Cause
निराश्रय:
without a support
लोकान् क्रीडनकानि-
the worlds as toys,
ईश क्रीडत:-ते
O Lord! Playing are You,
वदन्ति हि
say (the sages) indeed
You alone, without a support, are The Cause of the sustenance, creation and destruction of the worlds, which as toys You play with, so the sages say, indeed.
त्वमेवमूर्ध्नीदमनन्त लीलया भूमण्डलं बिभर्षि सहस्रमूर्धन् ।
अन्ते च य: स्वात्मनि रुद्धविश्व: शेषेऽद्वितीय: परिशिष्यमाण: ॥४६॥
त्वम्-एव-मूर्ध्नि-इदम्-
You only on the head, this
अनन्त लीलया
forever sportingly
भू-मण्डलम् बिभर्षि
the earth globe bear,
सहस्र-मूर्धन्
O Lord with thousand heads!
अन्ते च य: स्व-आत्मनि
in the end and Who in own self
रुद्ध-विश्व:
draw the world,
शेषे-अद्वितीय:
lie down, One without a second,
परिशिष्यमाण:
the remaining enity
O Lord with a thousand heads, You alone for ever, sportingly bear this terrestrial globe, and in the end, draw it within Your own Self, The One without a second, and lie down as the remaining entity.
कोपस्तेऽखिलशिक्षार्थं न द्वेषान्न च मत्सरात् ।
बिभ्रतो भगवन् सत्त्वं स्थितिपालनतत्पर: ॥४७॥
कोप:-ते-
anger, Your's
अखिल-शिक्षार्थम्
for everyone to teach
न द्वेषात्-न च मत्सरात्
not from malice or hatred
बिभ्रत: भगवन् सत्त्वम्
consisting O Lord! Of Sattva,
स्थिति-पालन-तत्पर:
for the sustenance and maintenance eager
O Lord! Consisting of Sattva, Your anger is not caused by malice or hatred, but is to teach everyone, as You are eager to sustain and maintain the world.
नमस्ते सर्वभूतात्मन् सर्वशक्तिधराव्यय ।
विश्वकर्मन् नमस्तेऽस्तु त्वां वयं शरणं गता: ॥४८॥
नम:-ते सर्व-भूत-आत्मन्
salutation to You, of all beings the soul,
सर्व-शक्ति-धर-अव्यय
all energies holding, eternal,
विश्व-कर्मन् नम:-ते-अस्तु
of the universe the creator, salutations to You be,
त्वाम् वयम् शरणम् गता:
to You we for shelter go
O The Soul of all the beings! Salutations to You. You eternally hold all the energies, O Creator of the universe, salutations be to You. We seek shelter in You.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं प्रपनै: संविग्नैर्वेपमानायनैर्बल: ।
प्रसादित: सुप्रसन्नो मा भैष्टेत्यभयं ददौ ॥४९॥
एवम् प्रपनै: संविग्नै:-
thus by the subdued and anxious
वेपमान-अयनै:-बल:
trembling houses, Balaraama,
प्रसादित: सुप्रसन्न:
was propitiated and well pleased,
मा भैष्ट-इति-
'Do not be afraid', thus
अभयम् ददौ
protection gave
Thus the Kauravas who were anxious their houses were trembling, were humbled and Balaraama propitiated by them was pleased and told them not to be afraid, gave them protection.
दुर्योधन: पारिबर्हं कुञ्जरान् षष्टिहायनान् ।
ददौ च द्वादशशतान्ययुतानि तुरङ्गमान् ॥५०॥
दुर्योधन: पारिबर्हम्
Duryodhana as dowry
कुञ्जरान् षष्टि-हायनान्
elephants sixty years aged
ददौ च
gave and
द्वादशशतानि-अयुतानि
twelve hundred, ten thousand
तुरङ्गमान्
horses
Duryodhana gave twelve hundred elephants sixty years of age, and ten thousand horses as dowry.
रथानां षट्सहस्राणि रौक्माणां सूर्यवर्चसाम् ।
दासीनां निष्ककण्ठीनां सहस्रं दुहितृवत्सल: ॥५१॥
रथानाम् षट्सहस्राणि
chariots, six thousand,
रौक्माणाम् सूर्य-वर्चसाम्
of gold, Sun like bright,
दासीनाम् निष्क-कण्ठीनाम्
maids, gloden chains in the neck,
सहस्रम्
one thousand,
दुहितृ-वत्सल:
daughter fond of
He, fond of his daughter, gave six thousand chariots cast in gold, bright like the Sun, and one thousand maids with golden chains in their necks.
प्रतिगृह्य तु तत् सर्वं भगवान् सात्वतर्षभ: ।
ससुत: सस्नुष: प्रागात् सुहृद्भिरभिनन्दित: ॥५२॥
प्रतिगृह्य तु तत् सर्वम्
taking indeed that all
भगवान् सात्वत-ऋषभ:
The Lord, of the Yadus the foremost,
स-सुत: स-स्नुष:
with the son, and the daughter in law
प्रागात् सुहृद्भि:-
went by the friends
अभिनन्दित:
acclaimed
The Lord Balaraama, the foremost of the Yadus, took all that, and went away along with his son Saamba, and daughter in law, Laxmanaa, acclaimed by his friends and relations.
तत: प्रविष्ट: स्वपुरं हलायुध: समेत्य बन्धूननुरक्तचेतस: ।
शशंस सर्वं यदुपुङ्गवानां मध्ये सभायां कुरुषु स्वचेष्टितम् ॥५३॥
तत: प्रविष्ट: स्वपुरम्
then, entering His own town,
हलायुध: समेत्य
the plough weaponed, togather with
बन्धून्-अनुरक्त-चेतस:
the friends devoted minded
शशंस सर्वम्
told all that
यदु-पुङ्गवानाम् मध्ये
of the Yadus' leaders midst of
सभायाम् कुरुषु
in the court of the Kurus
स्व-चेष्टितम्
own efforts
Then, entering His own town, the plaugh weaponed Balaraamatold to all His devotion minded friends, and the leaders of the Yadus, all that He had done in the court of the Kauravas.
अद्यापि च पुरं ह्येतत् सूचयद् रामविक्रमम् ।
समुन्नतं दक्षिणतो गङ्गायामनुदृश्यते ॥५४॥
अद्य-अपि च
today also and
पुरम् हि-एतत्
the town sure this
सूचयद् राम-विक्रमम्
indicates Balaraama's power,
समुन्नतम् दक्षिणत:
elevate on the south
गङ्गायाम्-अनुदृश्यते
into the Ganges is seen
And, till today, indeed, the town surely indicates the power of Balaraama, as it is seen elevated towards the South, and is sloping towards the Ganges.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां
दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे हास्तिनपुरकर्षणरूपसङ्कर्षणविजयो
नाम अष्टषष्टितम: अध्याय: ॥६८॥
