श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
नरकं निहतं श्रुत्वा तथोद्वाहं च योषिताम् ।

कृष्ण्नैकेन बह्नीनां तद् दिदृक्षु: स्म नारद: ॥१॥


नरकम् निहतम् श्रुत्वा
Narakaasura killed hearing
तथा-उद्वाहम् च योषिताम्
and marrying and of the women
कृष्णेन-एकेन बह्नीनाम्
by Krishna of the many
तद् दिदृक्षु: स्म नारद:
that to see wanted Naarada

Naarada heard that Narakaasura was killed, and that Krishna had married all those many women, and he was eager to see that.


चित्रं बतैतदेकेन वपुषा युगपत् पृथक् ।

गृहेषु द्व्यष्टसाहस्रं स्त्रिय एक उदावहत् ॥२॥


चित्रम् बत-एतत्-
surprising surely it is
एकेन वपुषा
by one body,
युगपत् पृथक्
togather, seperately
गृहेषु द्वि-अष्ट-साहस्रम्
in houses sixteen thousand
स्त्रिय: एक: उदावहत्
women alone married

Surely it is surprising that He alone married, being in one body, at one time, the different sixteen thousand women, in their houses.


इत्युत्सुको द्वारवतीं देवर्षिर्द्रष्टुमागमत् ।

पुष्पितोपवनारामद्विजालिकुलनादिताम् ॥३॥


इति-उत्सुक: द्वारवतीम्
thus curious, to Dwaarakaa
देवर्षि:-द्रष्टुम्-आगमत्
the celestial sage to see came,
पुष्पित-उपवन-आराम-
with blooming flowers parks and gardens
द्विज-अलि-कुल-नादिताम्
with birds and bees swarms buzzing

The celestial sage was curious, and to see he came to Dwaaraka, which had parks and gardens with flowers blooming, resounding with the chirping of the birds and the buzz of swarms of bees.


उत्फुल्लेन्दीवराम्भोजकह्लार कुमुदोत्पलै: ।

छुरितेषु सरस्सूच्चै: कूजितां हंससारसै: ॥४॥


उत्फुल्ल-इन्दीवर-अम्भोज
with fully blooming beautiful lotuses,
कह्लार कुमुद-उत्पलै:
white lilies petals
छुरितेषु सरस्सु-
spread in the lakes
उच्चै: कूजिताम्
loudly crackling
हंस-सारसै:
swans and cranes

The lakes there were spread with full blown lotuses and petals of white lilies. They resounded with the crackling of swans and cranes.


प्रासादलक्षैर्नवभिर्जुष्टां स्फाटिकराजतै: ।

महामरकतप्रख्यै: स्वर्णरत्नपरिच्छदै: ॥५॥


प्रासाद-लक्षै:-नवभि:-
mansions lakhs of nine (nine lakhs)
जुष्टाम् स्फाटिक-राजतै:
inlaid with crystals and silver,
महा-मरकत-प्रख्यै:
with valuable emerald shining,
स्वर्ण-रत्न-परिच्छदै:
gold and gems studded with articles

There were nine lakh mansions built with crystal and silver, shining with valuable emeralds, and with articles studded with gold and gems.


विभक्तरथ्यापथचत्वरापणै: शालासभाभी रुचिरां सुरालयै: ।

संसिक्तमार्गाङ्गणवीथिदेहलीं पतत्पताकाध्वजवारितातपाम् ॥६॥


विभक्त-रथ्या-
demarked roads,
पथ-चत्वर-आपणै:
thoroughfare, crossings, market places,
शाला-सभाभि:
halls, meeting
रुचिराम् सुर-आलयै:
beautified by the gods abodes,
संसिक्त-मार्ग-
sprinkled roads
अङ्गण-वीथि-देहलीम्
courtyards, lanes and thresholds
पतत्-पताका-ध्वज-
flying flags and phastoons
वारित-आतपाम्
warding off the sun-shine

The city had well marked roads, throughfares, crossings, market places, meeting halls and was beautified by the aboades of gods. The roads, courtyards, lanes and thersholds were sprinkled with water, and the sun shine was warded off by the flying flags and phestoons.


तस्यामन्त:पुरं श्रीमदर्चितं सर्वधिष्ण्यपै: ।

हरे: स्वकौशलं यत्र त्वष्ट्रा कार्त्स्न्येन दर्शितम् ॥७॥


तस्याम्-अन्त:पुरम्
in that, the inner chambers,
श्रीमत्-अर्चितम्
spelndidly luxurious, admired
सर्व-धिष्ण्यपै: हरे:
by all the gaurdians, of The Lord,
स्व-कौशलम्
own skill
यत्र त्वष्ट्रा
where by Vishvakarmaa
कार्त्स्न्येन दर्शितम्
all togather was displayed

In that, the inner chambers of The Lord were splendidly luxurious, and were admired by all the gaurdians. Where, Vishvakarma had displayed all his skills put togather.


तत्र षोडशभि: सद्मसहस्रै: समलङ्कृतम् ।

विवेशैकतमं शौरे: पत्नीनां भवनं महत् ॥८॥


तत्र षोडशभि: सद्म-सहस्रै:
there, with sixteen houses thousand
समलङ्कृतम्
well decorated
विवेश-एकतमम्
entered one,
शौरे: पत्नीनाम्
of Krishna's wives'
भवनम् महत्
palace big

There were sixteen thousand well decorated house of Krishna's wives. Narada entered one of the big mansions.


विष्टब्धं विद्रुमस्तम्भैर्वैदूर्यफलकोत्तमै: ॥९॥

इन्द्रनीलमयै: कुड्यैर्जगत्या चाहतत्विषा ॥९॥


विष्टब्धम् विद्रुम-स्तम्भै:-
supported by coral pillars,
वैदूर्य-फलक-उत्तमै:
cats' eyes (gems) planques superior
इन्द्रनीलमयै:
with sapphire made
कुड्यै:-जगत्या
walls, floor
च-अहत-त्विषा
and with undiminished shine

There were coral pillars and cat's eye planques for support, and the walls were built of sapphire and also the floors, whose shine was never dulled.


वितानैर्निर्मितैस्त्वष्ट्रा मुक्तादामविलम्बिभि: ।

दान्तैरासनपर्यङ्कैर्मण्युत्तमपरिष्कृतै: ॥१०॥


वितानै:-निर्मितै:-त्वष्ट्रा
with canopies made by Vishvakarma
मुक्ता-दाम-विलम्बिभि:
pearl strings dangling
दान्तै:-आसन-पर्यङ्कै:-
ivory seats and beds
मणि-उत्तम-परिष्कृतै:
gems super fine inlaid

They were decorated by canopies made by Vishvakarma himself, with strings of pearls hanging from them. Then, there were seats and beds of ivory inlaid with super fine gems.


दासीभिर्निष्ककण्ठीभि: सुवासोभिरलङ्कृतम् ।

पुम्भि: सकञ्चुकोष्णीषसुवस्त्रमणिकुण्डलै: ॥११॥


दासीभि:-निष्क-कण्ठीभि:
with maids golden chain in the necks,
सुवासोभि:-अलङ्कृतम्
with good cloathes adorned
पुम्भि: सकञ्चुक-उष्णीष-
with men with coats, and turbans
सु-वस्त्र-मणि-कुण्डलै:
nice cloathes and gem earings

There were maidservants wearing golden chains in the neck and were adorned in good cloathes, and men servants wore coats and turbans, good cloathes and earings with gems.


रत्नदीपनिकरद्युतिभिर्निरस्तध्वान्तं विचित्रवलभीषु शिखण्डिनोङ्ग ।

नृत्यन्ति यत्र विहीतागुरुधूपमक्षैर्निर्यानमीक्ष्य घनबुद्धय: उन्नदन्त: ॥१२॥


रत्न-दीप-निकर-द्युतिभि:-
the gems like lamps many light
निरस्त-ध्वान्तम्
expelled the darkness
विचित्र-वलभीषु शिखण्डिन:-
on various colored awnings, peacocks
अङ्ग
O Dear (Pareekshit)
नृत्यन्ति यत्र
danced where,
विहीत-अगुरु-धूपम्-
place aloe wood inscence smoke
अक्षै:-निर्यानम्-ईक्ष्य
through the air holes streaming out seeing,
घन-बुद्धय: उन्नदन्त:
clouds mistaking, screamed

O Dear Pareekshit! The gems there emitted brightness like many lighted lamps and expelled the darkness.The peacocks perched on various colored awnings, danced and screamed in joy, mistaking for clouds the smoke of the lighted aloe wood inscence streaming out of the air-holes, which were placed there.


तस्मिन् समानगुणरूपवयस्सुवेषदासीसहस्रयुतयानुसवं गृहिण्या ।

विप्रो ददर्श चमरव्यजनेन रुक्मदण्डेन सात्वतपतिं परिवीजयन्त्या ॥१३॥


तस्मिन् समान-गुण-
in that (palace), of same qualities
वय:-सुवेष-दासी-
as to age attire, the maid servants
सहस्र-युतया-
a thousand having
अनुसवम् गृहिण्या
constantly, by the Housewife, (Rukmini)
विप्र: ददर्श
the Braahmin (naarada) saw
चमर-व्यजनेन रुक्म-दण्डेन
by a chawrie hand han, of golden handle
सात्वत-पतिम्
of the Yadus The Lord,
परिवीजयन्त्या
fanning

In that palace, the Braahmin Naarada saw The Lord of the Yadus, seated and being fanned with a chawrie hand fan of golden handle, by the mistress of the house, Rukmini herself, who was constantly waited upon by a thousand maids equal to herself in age attire and looks.


तं सन्निरीक्ष्य भगवान् सहसोत्थित: श्रीपर्यङ्कत: सकलधर्मभृतां वरिष्ठ: ।

आनम्य पादयुगलं शिरसा किरीटजुष्टेन साञ्जलिरवीविशदासने स्वे ॥१४॥


तम् सन्निरीक्ष्य
him observing,
भगवान् सहसा-उत्थित:
The Lord abruptly got up,
श्री-पर्यङ्कत:
from Rukmini's bed,
सकल-धर्म-भृताम् वरिष्ठ:
of all the righteousness upholders the foremost,
आनम्य पाद-युगलम्
bowing low on the pair of feet,
शिरसा किरीट-जुष्टेन
with the head along with the crown
साञ्जलि:-अवीविशत्-आसने स्वे
with joined palms made him sit own seat own

Seeing Naarada, The Lord absuptly got up from Rukmini's bed, and the foremost of the upolders of righteousness, with the head along with the crown, bowed low on his pair of feet and with joined palms made him sit down on His own seat.


तस्यावनिज्य चरणौ तदप: स्वमूर्ध्ना बिभ्रज्जगद्गुरुतरोऽपि सतां पतिर्हि ।

ब्रह्मण्यदेव इति यद्गुणनाम युक्तं तस्यैव यच्चरणशौचमशेषतीर्थम् ॥१५॥


तस्य-अवनिज्य चरणौ
his washing the feet,
तत्-अप: स्व-मूर्ध्ना बिभ्रत्-
that water on own head bore
जगत्-गुरुतर:-अपि
of the universe the preceptor supreme though
सतां पति:-हि
of the holy men the protector,
ब्रह्मण्य-देव इति
the Braahmins considering as gods, thus,
यत्-गुण-नाम युक्तम्
that virtue and description having,
तस्य-एव यत्-चरण-शौच,-
his alone, that the feet washed (Ganga)
अशेष-तीर्थम्
is the utmost pilgrimage

He, the Supreme preceptor of the whole universe, Himself, the protector of the holy men, One who considers the Braahmins to be gods, Who has such virtues and names, Whose feet washed waters are the ultimate pilgrimage, like Ganges, bore Narada's feet washed water on His own head.


सम्पूज्य देवऋषिवर्यमृषि: पुराणो नारायणो नरसखो विधिनोदितेन ।

वाण्याभिभाष्य मितयामृतमिष्टया तं प्राह प्रभो भगवते करवामहे किम् ॥१६॥


सम्पूज्य देव-ऋषि-वर्यम्-
well worshipping of the celestial sages, foremost,
ऋषि: पुराण: नारायण:
the sage ancient Naaraayan,
नरसख: विधिना-उदितेन
of Nara the friend, by rules prescribed
वाण्या-अभिभाष्य
with words, speaking
मितया-अमृत-मिष्टया
measured, nectar sweet
तम् प्राह प्रभो
him said, 'Lord!
भगवते करवामहे किम्
for Your honoured self, should do what?'

He, the ancient sage Naaraayana, the friend of Nara, worshipped with the prescribed rules the foremost of the celestial sages, Naarada, and in measured nectar like sweet words said, 'O Lord! For your honoured self, what should we do?'


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
नैवाद्भुतं त्वयि विभोऽखिललोकनाथे मैत्री जनेषु सकलेषु दम: खलानाम् ।

नि:श्रेयसाय हि जगत्स्थितिरक्षणाभ्यां स्वैरावतार उरुगाय विदाम सुष्ठु ॥१७॥


न-एव-अद्भुतम् त्वयि विभो-
not even strange is Your, O Mighty One!
अखिल-लोक-नाथे
of the whole universe, The Ruler,
मैत्री जनेषु सकलेषु
friendship with people all
दम: खलानाम्
and chastening of the wicked
नि:श्रेयसाय हि
for the wefare alone
जगत्-स्थिति-रक्षणाभ्याम्
of the universe, sustenance and protection,
स्वैर-अवतार उरुगाय
at will ascend supreme
विदाम सुष्ठु
we know well

'O Mighty Lord! O Ruler of the whole universe, it is not strange that You are friends with all, and that You chastize the wicked, and also that You have descended at will for the supreme welfare, sustenance and protection of the universe, and we know that well.'


दृष्टं तवाङ्घ्रियुगलं जनतापवर्गं ब्रह्मादिभिर्हृदि विचिन्त्यमगाधबोधै: ।

संसारकूपपतितोत्तरणावलम्बं ध्यायंश्चराम्यनुगृहाण यथा स्मृति: स्यात् ॥१८॥


दृष्टम् तव-अङ्घ्रि-युगलम्
have seen Your feet two
जनता-अपवर्गम्
of the people deliverence giving,
ब्रह्मा-आदिभि:-हृदि
by Brahmaa and others, in the heart
विचिन्त्यम्-अगाध-बोधै:
contemplated upon, of deep wisdom
संसार-कूप-पतित-
in the mundane well fallen
उत्तरण-अवलम्बम्
to reprieve, the support,
ध्यायन्-चरामि-
contemplating, may roam about
अनुगृहाण यथा
bless so that
स्मृति: स्यात्
memory remains

I have seen Your two feet, which give deliverence to the people, upon which Brahmaa and others having deep wisdom contemplate in their hearts, which are the support for the retrieving of those who have fallen in the well of mundane existence. Do bless me so that I may roam about ever remembering them and contemplating on them.


ततोऽन्यदाविशद् गेहं कृष्णपत्न्या: स नारद: ।

योगेश्वरेश्वरस्याङ योगमायाविवित्सया ॥१९॥


तत:-अन्यत्-आविशदत्
then, another entered
गेहम् कृष्ण-पत्न्या:
house of Shri Krishna's wife,
स: नारद:
he, Naarada
योगेश्वर-ईश्वरस्य-
of the masters of Yoga's Lord's
अङ
O Dear!
योग-माया-विवित्सया
of Yoga's power to ascertain

O Dear Pareekshit! He, Naarada, then entered the house of Krishna's another wife, to ascertain the power of yoga of The Lord of the masters of Yoga.


दीव्यन्तमक्षैस्तत्रापि प्रियया चोद्धवेन च ।

पूजित: परया भक्त्या प्रत्युत्थानासनादिभि: ॥२०॥


दीव्यन्तम्-अक्षै:-
playing with dice
तत्र-अपि प्रियया
there also with the beloved
च-उद्धवेन च
and Uddhava and
पूजित: परया भक्त्या
was worshipped with ultimate devotion,
प्रत्युत्थान-आसन-आदिभि:
by getting up and offering a seat

There also he saw Krishna playing at dice with His beloved and Uddhava. He was worshipped with ultimate devotion by getting up and offering of seat.


पृष्टश्चाविदुषेवासौ कदाऽऽयातो भवानिति ।

क्रियते किं नु पूर्णानामपूर्णैरस्मदादिभि: ॥२१॥


पृष्ट:-च-अविदुषा-इव-असौ
asked and, ignorant like, He
कदा-आयात: भवान्-इति
'When did you come' thus,
क्रियते किम् नु
'should do what indeed,
पूर्णानाम्-
for the self-fulfilled
अपूर्णै:-अस्मत्-आदिभि:
the unfulfilled like us'

Then, like an ignorant person, He asked, ' When did you come? What should we the unfulfilled do for you who are self-fulfilled?'


अथापि ब्रूहि नो ब्रह्मन् जन्मैतच्छोभनं कुरु ।

स तु विस्मित उत्थाय तूष्णीमन्यदगाद् गृहम् ॥२२॥


अथ-अपि ब्रूहि न:
then also, do say to us,
ब्रह्मन्
O Sage!
जन्म-एतत्-शोभनम् कुरु
birth this worthwhile render,'
स: तु विस्मित: उत्थाय
he, however, astonished, got up,
तूष्णीम्-अन्यत्-अगाद् गृहम्
quietly to the other went house

'Even then, O Sage! do tell us, and render our human lives worthwhile.' He, however, got up, and in astonishment went away to another house.


तत्राप्यचष्ट गोविन्दं लालयन्तं सुताञ्छिशून् ।

ततोऽन्यस्मिन् गृहेऽपश्यन्मज्जनाय कृतोद्यमम् ॥२३॥


तत्र-अपि-अचष्ट गोविन्दम्
there also, saw Govinda,
लालयन्तम् सुतान्-शिशून्
fondling the sons young,
तत:-अन्यस्मिन् गृहे-
from there, in another house
अपश्यत्-मज्जनाय
saw for bathing
कृत-उद्यमम्
making preparations

There also he saw Govinda fondling His young sons. From there, in yet another house, he found Him preparing for His bath.


जुह्वन्तं च वितानाग्नीन् यजन्तं पञ्चभिर्मखै: ।

भोजयन्तं द्विजान् क्वापि भुञ्जानमवशेषितम् ॥२४॥


जुह्वन्तम् च वितान-अग्नीन्
oblations pouring and in the sacrificial fires
यजन्तम् पञ्चभि:-मखै:
propitiating with the five offerings
भोजयन्तम् द्विजान् क्व-अपि
feeding the Braahmins, somewhere,
भुञ्जानम्-अवशेषितम्
partaking of the left-overs

Naarada saw krishna pouring oblations in the sacrificial fires, at some place, making the five offerings, and somewhere, feeding the Braahmins, and at other place, Himself partaking of the left-overs.


क्वापि सन्ध्यामुपासीनं जपन्तं ब्रह्म वाग्यतम् ।

एकत्र चासिचर्मभ्यां चरन्तमसिवर्त्मसु ॥२५॥


क्व-अपि सन्ध्याम्-उपासीनम्
somewhere Sandhyaa performing,
जपन्तम् ब्रह्म
contemplating on Brahman,
वाग्यतम्
in silence,
एकत्र च-असि-चर्मभ्याम्
at one place and sword and shield
चरन्तम्-असि-वर्त्मसु
wielding, in fencing

At some place He was performing Sandhyaa, at another, He was meditating on Brahman, and then at another place He was wielding the sword and shield in the tricks of fencing.


अश्वैर्गजै रथै: क्वापि विचरन्तं गदाग्रजम् ।

क्वचिच्छयानं पर्यङ्के स्तूयमानं च वन्दिभि: ॥२६॥


अश्वै:-गजै रथै: क्वा-अपि
on horse, elephant chariot, somewhere,
विचरन्तम् गद-अग्रजम्
riding, Gada's elder brother,
क्वचित्-शयानम् पर्यङ्के
somewhere, sleeping on the bed,
स्तूयमानम् च वन्दिभि:
and being eulogized by the bards

Some where he saw Him riding the horse, elephant or chariot, at other place, He, Gada's elder brother was sleeing on the bed, and was eulogized by the bards.


मन्त्रयन्तं च कस्मिंश्चिन्मन्त्रिभिश्चोद्ध्वादिभि: ।

जलक्रीडारतं क्वापि वारमुख्याबलावृतम् ॥२७॥


मन्त्रयन्तम् च कस्मिन्-चित्-
discussing and in some (palace)
मन्त्रिभि:-च-उद्ध्व-आदिभि:
with the ministers and Uddhava and others,
जल-क्रीडा-रतम् क्व-अपि
in water sport engage somewhere,
वार-मुख्या-अबला-वृतम्
with courtesans and women surrounded

In some palace He was discussing with the ministers, Uddhava and others, someshere He was engaged in water sports, surrounded by courtesans and women.


कुत्रचिद् द्विजमुख्येभ्यो ददतं गा: स्वलङ्कृता: ।

इतिहासपुराणानि शृण्वन्तं मङ्गलानि च ॥२८॥


कुत्रचिद् द्विज-मुख्येभ्य:
somewhere to the Braahmin foremost
ददतम् गा: स्वलङ्कृता:
was giving cows well decorated,
इतिहास-पुराणानि
history, Puraanas
शृण्वन्तम् मङ्गलानि च
listening to the auspicious and

Somewhere, he saw Him giving well decorated cows to the foremost of the Braahmins, and somewhere He was listening to the rendering of the auspicious Histories and Puraanas.


हसन्तं हास्यकथया कदाचित् प्रियया गृहे ।

क्वापि धर्मं सेवमानमर्थकामौ च कुत्रचित् ॥२९॥


हसन्तम् हास्य-कथया
laughing on amusing talks
कदाचित् प्रियया गृहे
sometimes, in the beloved's house,
क्व-अपि धर्मम् सेवमानम्-
somewhere also Dharma observing,
अर्थ-कामौ च कुत्रचित्
finance and pleasure (persuing) somewhere

Sometimes, He was laughing with His beloved in her house on amusing talks, in other house, he was observing Dharma, and in the other He was persuing finance and pleasures.


ध्यायन्तमेकमासीनं पुरुषं प्रकृते: परम् ।

शुश्रूषन्तं गुरून् क्वापि कामैर्भोगै: सपर्यया ॥३०॥


ध्यायन्तम्-एकम्-
meditating, alone,
आसीनम् पुरुषम्
seated, The Person
प्रकृते: परम्
beyond Prakriti, Supreme,
शुश्रूषन्तम् गुरून् क्व-अपि
serving the elders somewhere,
कामै:-भोगै: सपर्यया
with desired objects offering

Saw Him seated alone, meditating upon The Supreme Person, beyond Prakriti. Somewhere, He was serving the elders by offering to them their desired objects.


कुर्वन्तं विग्रहं कैश्चित् सन्धिं चान्यत्र केशवम् ।

कुत्रापि सह रामेण चिन्तयन्तं सतां शिवम् ॥३१॥


कुर्वन्तम् विग्रहम् कै:-चित्
making war with some,
सन्धिम् च-अन्यत्र केशवम्
truce and at other (place) Keshava,
कुत्र-अपि सह रामेण
somewhere also with Balaraama
चिन्तयन्तम् सताम् शिवम्
discussing of the virtuous the welfare

At some place Keshava was making war with some, and at other place He was making truce with other. At yet other place He was discussiong with Balaraama the welfare of the virtuous.


पुत्राणां दुहितृणां च काले विध्युपयापनम् ।

दारैर्वरैस्तत्सदृशै: कल्पयन्तं विभूतिभि: ॥३२॥


पुत्राणाम् दुहितृणाम् च
of the sons daughters and
काले विधि-उपयापनम्
in time, duly marrying
दारै:-वरै:-तत्-सदृशै:
with wives and grooms them like,
कल्पयन्तम् विभूतिभि:
performing with grandeour

He performed His sons and daughters' marriage, in proper time, with brides and grooms equal to them, with grandeour.


प्रस्थापनोपानयनैरपत्यानां महोत्सवान् ।

वीक्ष्य योगेश्वरेशस्य येषां लोका विसिस्मिरे ॥३३॥


प्रस्थापन-उपानयनै:-
sending and receiving
अपत्यानाम् महोत्सवान्
of the children with ceremony
वीक्ष्य योगेश्वर-ईशस्य
seeing, of The Lord of the masters of yoga,
येषाम् लोका: विसिस्मिरे
of whose, the people were amazed

Seeing the ceremonious of sending off and receiving of the children, ceremoniously conducted by The Lord of the masters of yoga, the people were amazed.


यजन्तं सकलान् देवान् क्वापि क्रतुभिरूर्जितै: ।

पूर्तयन्तं क्वचिद् धर्मं कूपाराममठादिभि: ॥३४॥


यजन्तम् सकलान् देवान्
propitiating all the gods
क्व-अपि क्रतुभि:-ऊर्जितै:
somewhere by sacrifices grand
पूर्तयन्तम् क्वचिद् धर्मम्
fulfilling somewhere Dharma
कूप-आराम-मठ-आदिभि:
by well, garden, hermitages etc.,

At some place He organized grand sacrifices to propitiate all the gods, at others He fulfilled the requierments of Dharma by providing wells, gardens and hermitages.


चरन्तं मृगया क्वापि हयमारुह्य सैन्धवम् ।

घ्नन्तं तत: पशून् मेध्यान् परीतं यदुपुङ्गवै: ॥३५॥


चरन्तम् मृगया क्व-अपि
roaming for game somewhere,
हयम्-आरुह्य सैन्धवम्
horse mounted from Sindha,
घ्नन्तम् तत:
killing then
पशून् मेध्यान्
the animals for sacrifice,
परीतम् यदु-पुङ्गवै:
surrounded by the Yadus foremost

He was roaming about for game, mounted on a horse from Sindha.Then, He killed animals for sacrifice, surrounded by the foremost of the Yadus.


अव्यक्तलिङ्गं प्रकृतिष्वन्त: पुरगृहादिषु ।

क्वचिच्चरन्तं योगेशं तत्तद्भावबुभुत्सया ॥३६॥


अव्यक्त-लिङ्गम्
with undisclosed identity,
प्रकृतिषु-अन्त: पुर-
among the people of the inner chambers,, city,
गृह-आदिषु
houses and others,
क्वचित्-चरन्तम् योगेशम्
sometimes going about The Master of Yoga,
तत्-तत्-भाव-बुभुत्सया
of their inward feelings wanting to know

He went about with undisclosed identity, among the people, in the city, the palaces, and inner chambers, to know of their inward feelings.


अथोवाच हृषीकेशं नारद: प्रहसन्निव ।

योगमायोदयं वीक्ष्य मानुषीमीयुषो गतिम् ॥३७॥


अथ-उवाच हृषीकेशम्
then said, to Krishna,
नारद: प्रहसन्-इव
Naarada, smilingly like,
योग-माया-उदयम्
of Yoga Maaya's display,
वीक्ष्य मानुषीम्-
watching, human
ईयुष: गतिम्
followings ways

Then Naarada watching the display of Yoga Maaya, by Krishna, smilingly said to Him, who was following the the ways of the human beings.


विदाम योगमायान्ते दुर्दर्शा अपि मायिनाम् ।

योगेश्वरात्मन् निर्भाता भवत्पादनिषेवया ॥३८॥


विदाम योग-मायाम्-ते
(I) know the Yoga Maaya of Yours
दुर्दर्शा अपि मायिनाम्
difficult to be seen by the Mayaa knowers,
योगेश्वर-आत्मन्
O Yogeshvara! O Supreme Self!
निर्भाता भवत्-पाद
is revealed (to me) by Your feet
निषेवया
worship

O Yogeshvara! O Supreme Self! I know of Your Yoga Maayaa, which is difficult to be known even by the knowers of Maaya, Like Brahmaa. It is revealed to me, by the worship of Your feet.


अनुजानीहि मां देव लोकांस्ते यशसाऽप्लुतान् ।

पर्यटामि तवोद्गायन् लीलां भुवनपावनीम् ॥३९॥


अनुजानीहि माम्
permit me
देव
O Lord!
लोकान्-ते यशसा-आप्लुतान्
In the worlds, by Your glory flooded,
पर्यटामि तव-उद्गायन्
roaming, Your singing aloud
लीलाम् भुवन-पावनीम्
exploits, the universe purifying

O Lord! Permit me to go about roaming in the worlds, flooded with Your glory, singing aloud of Your universe purifying sports.


श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
ब्रह्मन् धर्मस्य वक्ताहं कर्ता तदनुमोदिता ।

तच्छिक्षयँल्लोकमिममास्थित: पुत्र मा खिद: ॥४०॥


ब्रह्मन्
O Sage!
धर्मस्य वक्ता-अहम्
of Dharmaa, the preacher, I,
कर्ता तत्-अनुमोदिता
practitioner, and supportor
तत्-शिक्षयन्-
that teaching,
लोकम्-इमम्-स्थित:
in this world present,
पुत्र मा खिद:
O Son! Do not be perplexed.

'O Sage! I am the preacher of Dharma, I practice it Myself, and also support it. I am present in this world, teaching it to people by My example. O Son! Do not be perplexed.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्याचरन्तं सद्धर्मान् पावनान् गृहमेधिनाम् ।

तमेव सर्वगेहेषु सन्तमेकं ददर्श ह ॥४१॥


इति-आचरन्तम् सत्-धर्मान्
thus, performing the pious duties
पावनान् गृहमेधिनाम्
purifying for the householders,
तम्-एव सर्व-गेहेषु
Him alone, in all the houses,
सन्तम्-एकम् ददर्श ह
present One, saw indeed

Thus, indeed Naarada saw Him alone, The One present, in all the houses, performing the pious duties which are purifying for the householders.


कृष्णस्यानन्तवीर्यस्य योगमायामहोदयम् ।

मुहुर्दृष्ट्वा ऋषिरभूद् विस्मितो जातकौतुक: ॥४२॥


कृष्णस्य-अनन्त-वीर्यस्य
Krishna's unending powers'
योग-माया-महा-उदयम्
Yoga Maaya's the great display
मुहु:-दृष्ट्वा ऋषि:-अभूत्
again and again watching, the sage became
विस्मित: जात-कौतुक:
astonished, having curiosity

The curious sage, again and again watching the great display of the Yoga Maayaa, of Krishna, Whose powers are ending, was astonished.


इत्यर्थकामधर्मेषु कृष्णेन श्रद्धितात्मना ।

सम्यक् सभाजित: प्रीतस्तमेवानुस्मरन् ययौ ॥४३॥


इति-अर्थ-काम-धर्मेषु
thus, in Arth, Kaama and Dharma,
कृष्णेन श्रद्धित-आत्मना
by Krishna respect shown by Himself,
सम्यक् सभाजित: प्रीत:-
well honoured, delighted,
तम्-एव-अनुस्मरन् ययौ
Him alone remembering, went

The sage Naarada saw Krishna Himself, practicing Arth Kaama and Dharma with zest, and well honoured by Him, he went away thinking of Him alone.


एवं मनुष्यपदवीमनुवर्तमानो नारायणोऽखिलभवाय गृहीतशक्ति: ।

रेमेऽङ्ग षोडशसहस्रवराङ्गनानां सव्रीडसौहृदनिरीक्षणहासजुष्ट: ॥४४॥


एवम् मनुष्य-पदवीम्-
thus, human ways
अनुवर्तमान: नारायण:-
following, Naaraayana,
अखिल-भवाय गृहीत-शक्ति:
for the whole universe, taking on Maayaa,
रेमे-अङ्ग
sported, O Dear!
षोडश-सहस्र-वराङ्गनानाम्
with sixteen thousand noble wives,
सव्रीड-सौहृद-निरीक्षण-
with bashful looks, friendly smiles,
हास-जुष्ट:
accompanied

In this manner, Naaraayana, following the ways of the humans, for the good of the whole universe, took on the Maayaa Shakti, and sported accompanied with sixteen thousand noble wives, with bashful looks and friendly smiles.


यानीह विश्वविलयोद्भववृत्तिहेतु: कर्माण्यनन्यविषयाणि हरिश्चकार ।

यस्त्वङ गायति शृणोत्यनुमोदते वा भक्तिर्भवेद् भगवति ह्यपवर्गमार्गे ॥४५॥


यानि-इह
those who, here,
विश्व-विलय-उद्भव-
for the worlds' dissolution, creation,
वृत्ति-हेतु:
sustenance causing
कर्माणि-अनन्य-
activities unparalleled
विषयाणि हरि:-चकार
subjects Shree Hari performed,
य:-तु-अङ गायति
he, indeed, O Dear! Sings,
शृणोति-अनुमोदते वा
hears, approaves or,
भक्ति:-भवेत् भगवति
devotion attains in The Lord,
हि-अपवर्ग-मार्गे
indeed in liberation path

Dear Pareekshit! Those who sing, hear and approave of the unparalleled activities of The Lord, the cause of the dissoulution, creation and sustenance of the worlds, which Shree Hari performed, attains devotion in The Lord, The Bestower of liberation.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां

दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे कृष्णगार्हस्थ्यदर्शनं

नाम एकोनसप्ततितम: अध्याय: ॥६९॥
