प्रथमो अध्याय:
श्री बादरायणि:-उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
कृत्वा दैत्यवधं कृष्ण: सरामो यदुभिर्वृत: ।
भुवोऽवतारयद् भारं जविष्ठं जनयन् कलिम् ॥१॥
कृत्वा दैत्य-वधम् कृष्ण:
having done the Asuras' destruction, Krishna
स-राम: यदुभि:-वृत:
with Balaraama, and the Yadus accompanied,
भुव:-अवतारयत् भारम्
of the earth relieved the burden
जविष्ठम् जनयन् कलिम्
by violent generating discord
Krishna, with Balaraama and accompanied by the Yaadavaas, had destructed the Asuras. Then, by generating a violent discord, between the Kauravaas and the Paandavas, He relieved the earth of the burden.
ये कोपिता: सुबहु पाण्डुसुता: सपत्नैर्दुर्द्यूतहेलनकचग्रहणादिभिस्तान् ।
कृत्वा निमित्तमितरेतरत: समेतान् हत्वा नृपान् निरहरत् क्षितिभारमीश: ॥२॥
ये कोपिता: सुबहु पाण्डु-सुता:
who were enraged very much Paandu's sons
सपत्नै:-दुर्द्यूत-हेलन-
the enemies, deceitful gambling, insults,
कच-ग्रहण-आदिभि:-तान्
hair pulling, and other, them
कृत्वा निमित्तम्-इतर-इतरत:
making the excuse, this and that side
समेतान् हत्वा नृपान्
gathered killing the kings,
निरहरत् क्षिति-भारम्-ईश:
took away the burden, The Lord
The sons of Paandu were very much enraged by the deceitful gambling, humiliating insults and the hair pulling of Draupadi, by the enemies, the Kauravaas. Taking all this as an excuse, The Lord got killed the kings gathered on this and that side, and took away the load off the earth.
भूभारराजपृतना यदुभिर्निरस्य गुप्तै: स्वबाहुभिरचिन्तयदप्रमेय: ।
मन्येऽवनेर्ननु गतोऽप्यगतं हि भारं यद् यादवं कुलमहो अविषह्यमास्ते ॥३॥
भू-भार-राज-पृतना
the earth burden of the kings armies,
यदुभि:-निरस्य
through the Yaadavaas annihilating,
गुप्तै: स्व-बाहुभि:-
secretly by His own arms (supported)
अचिन्तयत्-अप्रमेय:
thought, The Unfathomable One
मन्ये-अवने:-ननु गत:-अपि-
'consider the earth indeed is relieved, even
अगतम् हि भारम् यत्
is not relieved surely, of burden, in that,
यादवम् कुलम्-अहो
the Yaadavaas clan, O!
अविषह्यम्-आस्ते
unconquerable remains'
The Unfathomable Lord got the kings and their armies killed through the Yaadavaas, supporting them secretly with His own arms. Then, He thought, 'Even though the earth is relieved of its burden, I do not consider it to be so, as long as the unconquerable clan of the Yaadavaas exists.'
नैवान्यत: परिभवोऽस्य भवेत् कथञ्चिन्मत्संश्रयस्य विभवोन्नहनस्य नित्यम् ।
अन्त:कलिं यदुकुलस्य विधाय वेणुस्तम्बस्य वह्निमिव शान्तिमुपैमि धाम ॥४॥
न-एव-अन्यत: परिभव:-अस्य भवेत्
not even from others, destruction its will be,
कथञ्चित्-मत्-संश्रयस्य
always in My protection being,
विभव-उन्नहनस्य नित्य
by prosperity uncontrollable constantly
अन्त:-कलिम् यदु-कुलस्य विधाय
internal discord, of the Yaadava clan generating
वेणु-स्तम्बस्य वह्निम्-इव
bamboo groves' fire like
शान्तिम्-उपैमि धाम
peacefully will return to the realm
The destruction of the Yaadava clan is not possible by any other, who have become uncontrollable due to consistent prosperity. By generating internal discord in the Yaadava clan, I shall destroy it like the fire in the bamboo grove, and will peacefully return to My realm.
एवं व्यवसितो राजन् सत्यसङ्कल्प ईश्वर: ।
शापव्याजेन विप्राणां संजह्रे स्वकुलं विभु: ॥५॥
एवम् व्यवसित: राजन्
so deciding, O King!
सत्य-सङ्कल्प: ईश्वर:
of truthful resolution The Almighty Lord,
शाप-व्याजेन विप्राणाम्
by the curse pretext of the Braahmanas
संजह्रे स्व-कुलम् विभु:
annihilated own clan The Omnipresent Lord!
O King! So deciding, The Almighty Lord of truthful resolution, under the pretext of the curse of the Braahmanas, The Omnipresent Lord, brought about the annihilation of His own clan.
स्वमूर्त्या लोकलावण्यनिर्मुक्त्या लोचनं नृणाम् ।
गीर्भिस्ता: स्मरतां चित्तं पदैस्तानीक्षतां क्रिया: ॥६॥
स्व-मूर्त्या लोक-लावण्य-
by (His) own form, of the three worlds' the beauty
निर्मुक्त्या लोचनम् नृणाम्
nullifying, the eyes of the people,
गीर्भि:-ता: स्मरताम् चित्तम्
by words them, who remembered, the hearts,
पदै:-तान्-ईक्षताम् क्रिया:
by the feet, them seeing the senses
By His own form, which nullifies the beauty of the three worlds, He attracted the eyes of those who saw it. By His words, He stole the hearts of those who remembered them, and by His feet, He suspended the senses of those who saw them.
आच्छिद्य कीर्तिं सुश्लोकां वितत्य ह्यञ्जसा नु कौ ।
तमोऽनया तरिष्यन्तीत्यगात् स्वं पदमीश्वर: ॥७॥
आच्छिद्य कीर्तिम् सुश्लोकाम्
spreading the fame, in charming verses,
वितत्य हि-अञ्जसा नु कौ
covering easily indeed the whole world,
तम:-अनया तरिष्यन्ति-
darkness by this will cross over
इति-अगात् स्वम् पदम्-ईश्वर:
so (thinking) went to own realm The Lord
By spreading His fame in charming verses, which easily covered the whole world, and thinking that men will cross the darkness by singing them, He went away to His own realm.
राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
ब्रह्मण्यानां वदान्यानां नित्यं वृद्धोपसेविनाम् ।
विप्रशाप: कथमभूद् वृष्णीनां कृष्णचेतसाम् ॥८॥
ब्रह्मण्यानाम् वदान्यानाम्
devoted to the Braahmana, liberal,
नित्यम् वृद्ध-उपसेविनाम्
always the elders serving,
विप्र-शाप: कथम्-अभूत्
Braahmana's curse how incur
वृष्णीनाम् कृष्ण-चेतसाम्
to the Vrishnees, the Krishna minded
How did the Krishna minded Vrishnees incur the curse of the Braahmanas, who were devoted to the Braahmanas, were liberal, and always served the elders?
यन्निमित्त: स वै शापो यादृशो द्विजसत्तम ।
कथमेकात्मनां भेद एतत् सर्वं वदस्व मे ॥९॥
यत्-निमित्त: स: वै शाप:
for what reason, that indeed the curse,
यादृश: द्विज-सत्तम
what type, O Braahmana the foremost!
कथम्-एक-आत्मनाम् भेद
how of the one minded, discord,
एतत् सर्वम् वदस्व मे
this all tell me
'O Braahmana the foremost! For what reason was the curse, of what nature it was, and how was there a discord among those who were one minded, do tell me all this.'
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
बिभ्रद् वपु: सकलसुन्दरसन्निवेशं कर्माचरन् भुवि सुमङ्गलमाप्तकाम: ।
आस्थाय धाम रममाण उदारकीर्ति: संहर्तुमैच्छत कुलं स्थितकृत्यशेष: ॥१०॥
बिभ्रद् वपु: सकल-सुन्दर-
exhibiting the form with all gracefulness
सन्निवेशम् कर्म-आचरन् भुवि
comprising, actions performing, on the earth,
सुमङ्गलम्-आप्त-काम:
auspicious, of gratified desires,
आस्थाय धाम रममाण
staying in the place and enjoying,
उदार-कीर्ति: संहर्तुम्-ऐच्छत
of magnanimous fame, to destroy wanted
कुलम् स्थित-कृत्य-शेष:
the race, remained work the last
He, Krishna, exhibited a form comprising of all graces, performed auspicious actions on the earth, enjoyed, staying in His city Dwaarakaa, had a magnanimous fame, had gratified all His desires, and wanted to destroy His race, as that was the last work, which remained for Him to do.
कर्माणि पुण्यनिवहानि सुमङ्गलानि गायञ्जगत्कलिमलापहराणि कृत्वा ।
कालात्मना निवसता यदुदेवगेहे पिण्डारकं समगमन् मुनयो निसृष्टा: ॥११॥
कर्माणि पुण्य-निवहानि
actions auspiciousness bringing,
सुमङ्गलानि गायन्-जगत्-
holiness to the singing, of the world's
कलि-मल-अपहराणि कृत्वा
and of Kali's evils, annihilations performing,
काल-आत्मना निवसता
by The Time Himself, while living
यदु-देव-गेहे पिण्डारकम्
in the Yadu's lord's house, to Pindaaraka
समगमन् मुनय: निसृष्टा:
went away the sages all
He performed actions which drew auspiciousness, and rendered those who sung of them holy, and which destroyed the evils of the world and of Kali Yuga. While He, Time Himself, as a Destroyer, was living in the house of the lord of the Yaadavaas, Vasudeva, He bade farewell to all the sages and went away to the holy place Pindaaraka.
विश्वामित्रोऽसित: कण्वो दुर्वासा भृगुरङ्गिरा: ।
कश्यपो वामदेवोऽत्रिर्वसिष्ठो नारदादय: ॥१२॥
विश्वामित्र:-असित: कण्व:
Vishwaamitra, Asita, Kanva,
दुर्वासा भृगु:-अङ्गिरा:
Durvaasaa, Bhrigu, Angiraa,
कश्यप: वामदेव:-अत्रि:-
Kashyapa, Vaamadeva, Atri,
वसिष्ठ: नारद-आदय:
Vasishtha, Naarada and others
Vishwaamitra, Asita, Kanva, Durvaasaa, Bhrigu, Angiraa, Kashyapa, Vaamadeva, Atri, Vasishtha, Naarada and others.
क्रीडन्तस्तानुपव्रज्य कुमारा यदुनन्दना: ।
उपसंगृह्य पप्रच्छुरविनीता विनीतवत् ॥१३॥
क्रीडन्त:-तान्-उपव्रज्य
when playing, them approaching,
कुमारा यदुनन्दन:
the boys the Yaadava youths,
उपसंगृह्य पप्रच्छु:-
getting near, asked
अविनीता विनीतवत्
the arrogant, humble like
As the Yaadava young boys were once playing, they approached the sages, and getting near them, the arrogant ones as if humbly, asked them.
ते वेषयित्वा स्त्रीवेषै: साम्बं जाम्बवतीसुतम् ।
एषा पृच्छति वो विप्रा अन्तर्वत्न्यसितेक्षणा ॥१४॥
ते वेषयित्वा स्त्री-वेषै:
they, dressing in woman's garb
साम्बम् जाम्बवती-सुतम्
Saamba, Jaambavati's son,
एषा पृच्छति व: विप्रा:
'This, asks to you O Braahmanas!
अन्तर्वत्नी-असित-ईक्षणा
pregnant, dark-eyed,…
They dressed up Saamba, the son of Jaambavati, as a woman, and asked them, "O Braahmanas! She, the dark-eyed, pregnant woman, wants to ask you,…
प्रष्टुं विलज्जती साक्षात् प्रब्रूतामोघदर्शना: ।
प्रसोष्यन्ती पुत्रकामा किंस्वित् सञ्जनयिष्यति ॥१५॥
प्रष्टुम् विलज्जती साक्षात्
to ask feels shy, directly,
प्रब्रूत-अमोघ-दर्शना:
do say, you, of deep knowledge
प्रसोष्यन्ती पुत्र-कामा
soon to deliver, son desiring,
किंस्वित् सञ्जनयिष्यति
will she give birth (to a son)
You all have deep knowledge, do say, if she, soon to deliver, wishing for a son, will give birth to a son, she feels shy to ask you directly.'
एवं प्रलब्धा मुनयस्तानूचु: कुपिता नृप ।
जनयिष्यति वो मन्दा मुसलं कुलनाशनम् ॥१६॥
एवम् प्रलब्धा: मुनय:-
so deceived, the sages,
तान्-ऊचु: कुपिता: नृप
to them said, enraged, O King!
जनयिष्यति व: मन्दा:
will give birth, O You fools!
मुसलम् कुल-नाशनम्
pestle, the clan's destroyer
O King! thus, imposed upon, the enraged sages said, "O you fools! She will give birth to a pestle, the race destroyer.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा तेऽतिसन्त्रस्ता विमुच्य सहसोदरम् ।
साम्बस्य ददृशुस्तस्मिन् मुसलं खल्वयस्मयम् ॥१७॥
तत्-श्रुत्वा ते-अति-सन्त्रस्ता:
that hearing, they, very terrified,
विमुच्य सहसा-उदरम्
uncovered suddenly, the belly
साम्बस्य ददृशु:-तस्मिन्
of Saamba, saw in that
मुसलम् खलु-अयस्मयम्
a pestle, definitely of iron
Hearing that, the boys were very terrified, and uncovered the belly of Samba, and surely, there they saw a pestle made of iron.
किं कृतं मन्दभाग्यैर्न: किं वदिष्यन्ति नो जना: ।
इति विह्वलिता गेहानादाय मुसलं ययु: ॥18॥
किम् कृतम् मन्द-भाग्यै:-न:
'What has been done by ill destined us,
किम् वदिष्यन्ति न: जना:
what will say to us the people
इति विह्वलिता गेहान्-आदाय
thus lamenting, to the houses taking
मुसलम् ययु:
the pestle, went
'O What has been done by us, the ill-fated, what will people say to us?' Thus lamenting they took the pestle and went to their houses.
तच्चोपनीय सदसि परिम्लानमुखश्रिय: ।
राज्ञ आवेदयाञ्चक्रु: सर्वयादवसन्निधौ ॥१९॥
तत्-च-उपनीय सदसि
that and taking in the court,
परिम्लान-मुख-श्रिय:
with sad face pale,
राज्ञ आवेदयान्-चक्रु:
to the King narration started,
सर्व-यादव-सन्निधौ
in all the Yaadavaas presence
They, very saddened and with pale face took it to the court and started to narrate it to the king, Ugrasena, in the presence of all the Yaadavaas.
श्रुत्वामोघं विप्रशापं दृष्ट्वा च मुसलं नृप ।
विस्मिता भयसन्त्रस्ता बभूवुर्द्वारकौकस: ॥२०॥
श्रुत्वा-अमोघम् विप्र-शापम्
hearing of the unfailing Braahmana's curse,
दृष्ट्वा च मुसलम् नृप
seeing and the pestle, O King!
विस्मिता भय-सन्त्रस्ता
were surprised, and fear struck
बभूवु:-द्वारका-औकस:
became the Dwaarakaa residents
O King! Hearing of the unfailing curse of the Braahmanas, and seeing the pestle, the residents of Dwaarakaa were surprised and struck with fear.
तत्चूर्णयित्वा मुसलं यदुराज: स आहुक: ।
समुद्रसलिले प्रास्यल्लोहं चास्यावशेषितम् ॥२१॥
तत्-चूर्णयित्वा मुसलम्
that, grinding into powder, the pestle,
यदु-राज: स: आहुक:
Yaadava king, he, Ugrasena,
समुद्र-सलिले प्रास्यत्-
in the ocean water threw
लोहम् च-अस्य-अवशेषितम्
the iron and its remaining piece
The king of the Yaadavaas, Ugrasena, got the pestle ground into powder, and got it thrown in the sea water, and also the remaining piece of iron.
कश्चिन्मत्स्यो ग्रसील्लोहं चूर्णानि तरलैस्तत: ।
उह्यमानानि वेलायां लग्नान्यासन् किलैरका: ॥२२॥
कश्चित्-मत्स्य:-ग्रसीत्-लोहम्
some fish swallowed the iron,
चूर्णानि तरलै:-तत:
the powders by the waves
उह्यमानानि वेलायाम्
borne, on the shore
लग्नानि-आसन् किल-एरका:
deposited were and (became) Eraka grass
Some fish swallowed the piece of iron and the particles of the powder were borne by the waves and deposited on the shore, which grew into a grass called Eraka.
मत्स्यो गृहीतो मत्स्यघ्नैर्जालेनान्यै: सहार्णवे ।
तस्योदरगतं लोहं स शल्ये लुब्धकोऽकरोत् ॥२३॥
मत्स्य: गृहीत: मत्स्यघ्नै:-
the fish was caught by the fisherman
जालेन-अन्यै: सह-अर्णवे
by the net, others with in the sea,
तस्य-उदर-गत लोहम्
in its stomach found the iron,
स: शल्ये लुब्धक:-अकरोत्
he, in the arrow, the hunter fixed
The fish was caught by the fisherman, along with the other fishes in the net, in the sea. That iron found in its stomach was fixed by a hunter in the point of an arrow.
भगवाञ्ज्ञातसर्वार्थ ईश्वरोऽपि तदन्यथा ।
कर्तुं नैच्छद् विप्रशापं कालरूप्यन्वमोदत ॥२४॥
भगवान्-ज्ञात-सर्व-अर्थ:
The Lord, knowing all the truth,
ईश्वर:-अपि तत्-अन्यथा
All Powerful also, that to nullify
कर्तुम् न-इच्छत् विप्र-शापम्
to do so did not want Braahmana's curse,
काल-रूपी-अन्वमोदत
Time (Death) representing, approved it
The Lord knew all the truth, and He, The Almighty did not render it ineffectual, as He did not want to do so to a curse by the Braahmanas, rather, He being Time (Death) personified, approved of it.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां एकादश स्कन्धे प्रथम: अध्याय: ॥१॥
Thus ends the first discourse, in Book Eleven of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana
