श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अथ तत्रागमद् ब्रह्मा भवान्या च समं भव: ।

महेन्द्रप्रमुखा देवा मुनय: सप्रजेश्वरा: ॥१॥


अथ तत्र-आगमत् ब्रह्मा
then, there, came Brahmaa,
भवान्या च समम्-भव:
Bhavaani with and Shiva,
महेन्द्र-प्रमुखा: देवा:
Indra and the prominent gods,
मुनय: स-प्रजेश्वरा:
the sages with of creation the lords

Then, there came Brahmaa, Shiva with Bhavaani, Indra and the prominent gods, and the sages with the lords of creation.


पितर: सिद्धगन्धर्वा विद्याधरमहोरगा: ।

चारणा: यक्षरक्षांसि किन्नराप्सरसो द्विजा: ॥२॥


पितर: सिद्ध-गन्धर्वा:
the manes, Siddhas, Gandharvas,
विद्याधर-महा-उरगा:
Vidyaadharas, the great serpants,
चारणा: यक्ष-रक्षांसि
Chaaranas, Yakshas, Raakshasas,
किन्नर-अप्सरस: द्विजा:
Kinnaras, Apsaras, and Braahmanas

The manes, Siddhas, Gandharvas, Vidyaadharas, the great serpents, Chaaranas, Yakshas, Raakshasas, Kinnaras, Apsaras, and Braahmanas,…


द्रष्टुकामा भगवतो निर्याणं परमोत्सुका: ।

गायन्तश्च गृणन्तश्च शौरे: कर्माणि जन्म च ॥३॥


द्रष्टु-कामा: भगवत:
to see desiring, of The Lord
निर्याणम् परम-उत्सुका:
departure, much longing,
गायन्त:-च गृणन्त:-च
singing and, relating and
शौरे: कर्माणि जन्म च
of The Shauri's exploits, birth and

They were keen and very much eager to see the departure of The Lord, and sang and related the exploits and the birth of Shauree, Lord Krishna.


ववृषु: पुष्पवर्षाणि विमानावलिभिर्नभ: ।

कुर्वन्त: सङ्कुलं राजन् भक्त्या परमया युता: ॥४॥


ववृषु: पुष्प-वर्षाणि
showered flower rains,
विमान-अवलिभि:-नभ:
by Ariel cars rows, in the sky
कुर्वन्त: सङ्कुलम् राजन्
rendering crowded, O King!
भक्त्या परमया युता:
with devotion supreme full of

O King! They crowded the heavens with their rows of Ariel cars, and full of utmost devotion, showered rains of flowers.


भगवान् पितामहं वीक्ष्य विभूतीरात्मनो विभु: ।

संयोज्यात्मनि चात्मानं पद्मनेत्रे न्यमीलयत् ॥५॥


भगवान् पितामहम् वीक्ष्य
The Lord, Brahmaa seeing,
विभूती:-आत्मन: विभु:
essence own (the gods) All-pervading Lord
संयोज्य-आत्मनि च-आत्मानम्
collecting in His Self, and The essence Self
पद्मनेत्रे न्यमीलयत्
the Lotus-eyes closed

Casting His glance on Brahmaa, and the gods, His own essence, The All-pervading Lord, then, collected His own Self into His own essence Self and closed His lotus eyes.


लोकाभिरामां स्वतनुं धारणाध्यानमङ्गलम् ।

योगधारणयाऽऽग्नेय्यादग्ध्वा धामाविशत् स्वकम् ॥६॥


लोक-अभिरामाम् स्व-तनुम्
for the world super beautiful, own body,
धारणा-ध्यान-मङ्गलम्
for concentration, meditation blissful,
योग-धारणया-आग्नेय्या-
by Yoga concentrating, by the fire properties
अदग्ध्वा धाम-आविशत् स्वकम्
not burning, to realm entered own

The Lord, with His own body, supremely beautiful for the world, very blissful for concentration and meditation, not burning it by the properties of fire, but by concentration of Yoga, entered His own realm.


दिवि दुन्दुभयो नेदु: पेतु: सुमनसश्च खात् ।

सत्यं धर्मो धृतिर्भूमे: कीर्ति: श्रीश्चानु तं ययु: ॥७॥


दिवि दुन्दुभय: नेदु:
in the heaven trumpets sounded
पेतु: सुमनस:-च खात्
dropped flowers and from the sky,
सत्यम् धर्म: धृति:-भूमे:
Truth, piety, fortitude, of the earth,
कीर्ति: श्री:-च-अनु तम् ययु:
glory, prosperity and after Him went

Trumpets were sounded in the heavens, flowers rained from the sky. Truth, piety, fortitude, glory, and prosperity of the earth went after Him.


देवादयो ब्रह्ममुख्या न विशन्तं स्वधामनि ।

अविज्ञातगतिं कृष्णं ददृशुश्चातिविस्मिता: ॥८॥


देव-आदय: ब्रह्म-मुख्या:
the gods and others, Brahmaa the leading,
न विशन्तम् स्व-धामनि
not entering own realm
अविज्ञात-गतिम् कृष्णम्
of unknown ways Krishna
ददृशु:-च-अति-विस्मिता:
saw, and were very astonished

The gods and others, with Brahmaa leading, did not see Krishna, Whose ways are unknown, entering His own realm, and so were very astonished.


सौदामन्या यथाऽऽकाशे यान्त्या हित्वाभ्रमण्डलम् ।

गतिर्न लक्ष्यते मर्त्यैस्तथा कृष्णस्य दैवतै: ॥९॥


सौदामन्या यथा-आकाशे
lightening like in the sky,
यान्त्या हित्वा-अभ्र-मण्डलम्
going, leaving behind cloud mass
गति:-न लक्ष्यते मर्त्यै:-
movement is not seen by the mortals,
तथा कृष्णस्य दैवतै:
like that, of Krishna by the gods

Just as the mortals cannot see the movement of the lightening in the sky, leaving behind a mass of clouds, like that, the gods cannot perceive the movements of Shree Krishna.


ब्रह्मरुद्रादयस्ते तु दृष्ट्वा योगगतिं हरे: ।

विस्मितास्तां प्रशंसन्त: स्वं स्वं लोकं ययुस्तदा ॥१०॥


ब्रह्म-रुद्र-आदय:-ते तु
Brahmaa, Rudra, and others, they, indeed,
दृष्ट्वा योग-गतिम् हरे:
seeing the Yogic movement of Shree Hari,
विस्मिता:-ताम् प्रशंसन्त:
amazed, that appreciating,
स्वम् स्वम् लोकम् ययु:-तदा
to own realms went then

The other gods, Brahmaa and Rudra, saw the Yogic movements of Shree Hari, and appreciating them, went away to their own realms.


राजन् परस्य तनुभृज्जननाप्ययेहा मायाविडम्बनमवेहि यथा नटस्य ।

सृष्ट्वाऽऽत्मनेदमनुविश्य विहृत्य चान्ते संहृत्य चात्ममहिमोपरत: स आस्ते ॥११॥


राजन् परस्य तनुभृत्-जनन-
O King! Of The Supreme, human like taking birth,
अप्ययेहा माया-विडम्बनम्-
disappearing, of Maayaa's delusion
अवेहि यथा नटस्य
understand, like of an actor
सृष्ट्वा-आत्मना-इदम्-अनुविश्य
creating by Himself, this, entering it,
विहृत्य च-अन्ते संहृत्य
sporting, and in the end withdrawing
च-आत्म-महिम-उपरत: स: आस्ते
and in Self glory, established, He remains

O King! Understand that the human like taking of birth, and disappearing of The Supreme Lord, is a delusion of Maayaa, like the acting of an actor. He, by Himself having created this, enters it, and sporting in it, at the end withdraws it, and remains established in His own glory.


मर्त्येन यो गुरुसुतं यमलोकनीतं त्वां चानयच्छरणद: परमास्त्रदग्धम् ।

जिग्येऽन्तकान्तकमपीशमसावनीश: किं स्वावने स्वरनयन्मृगयुं सदेहम् ॥१२॥


मर्त्येन य: गुरु-सुतम्
in mortal frame, Who, preceptor's son,
यमलोक-नीतम् त्वाम् च-अनयत्-
to Death's realm taken, you, and, brought
शरणद: परम-अस्त्र-दग्धम्
The Shelter Provider, by supreme weapon burnt,
जिग्ये-अन्तक-अन्तकम्-
conquered The Death, Death,
अपि-ईशम्-असौ-अनीश:
even Shiva, this, un- Lordly
किम् स्व-अवने स्वर-नयत्-
is it, in own protection, to heaven took
मृगयुम् स-देहम्
the hunter with body

The Lord, Who brought back in mortal frame, the preceptors son, who had been taken to Death's realm, The Shelter Provider, Who, saved you from being burnt by the supreme weapon, Brahmaastra, Who defied The Lord of Death, Shiva, and took the hunter to heaven in his body, can He not protect Himself?


तथाप्यशेषस्थितिसम्भवाप्ययेष्वनन्यहेतुर्यदशेषशक्तिधृक् ।

नैच्छत् प्रणेतुं वपुरत्र शेषितं मर्त्येन किं स्वस्थगतिं प्रदर्शयन् ॥१३॥


तथा-अपि-अशेष-स्थिति-
yet, of the whole, continuation
सम्भव-अप्ययेषु-अनन्य-हेतु:-
evolution, dissolution The Ultimate Cause,
यत्-अशेष-शक्ति-धृक्
Who is the endless power holder,
न-इच्छत् प्रणेतुम् वपु:-अत्र
did not wish to retain body here,
शेषितम् मर्त्येन किम्
unconcerned, by mortal (body) what (use)
स्वस्थ-गतिम् प्रदर्शयन्
to the virtuous the (sublime) ways demonstrating

Yet, The Lord, Who is, of the whole universe, continuation, evolution, dissolution, the ultimate cause, and holds endless power, did not wish to retain His mortal body here, unconcerned, and demonstrated to the virtuous, the sublime ways of those established in The Self.


य एतां प्रातरुत्थाय कृष्णस्य पदवीं पराम् ।

प्रयत: कीर्तयेद् भक्त्या तामेवाप्नोत्यनुत्तमाम् ॥१४॥


य: एताम् प्रात:-उत्थाय
who ever, this in morning arising,
कृष्णस्य पदवीम् पराम्
of Krishna the state supreme,
प्रयत: कीर्तयेत् भक्त्या
with self control, sings with devotion
ताम्-एव-आप्नोति-अनुत्तमाम्
to that only will attain the highest

Who so ever, arises early in the morning and with self control and devotion sings of this highest state of Shree Krishna, will attain the same.


दारुको द्वारकामेत्य वसुदेवोग्रसेनयो: ।

पतित्वा चरणावस्रैर्न्यषिञ्चत् कृष्णविच्युत: ॥१५॥


दारुक: द्वारकाम्-एत्य
Daaruka, Dwaarakaa returned
वसुदेव-उग्रसेनयो:
in Vasudeva's and Ugrasena's
पतित्वा चरणौ-अस्रै:-
fallen in feet, with tears
न्यषिञ्चत् कृष्ण-विच्युत:
bathed, Krishna separated from

Daaruka, separated from Krishna, returned to Dwaarakaa, and fell at the feet of Vasudeva and Ugrasena, and bathed them with tears.


कथयामास निधनं वृष्णीनां कृत्स्नशो नृप ।

तच्छ्रुत्वोद्विग्नहृदयाजना: शोकविमूर्च्छता: ॥१६॥


कथयामास निधनम् वृष्णीनाम्
related the death of the Vrishnees,
कृत्स्नश: नृप
in detail, O Pareekshit!
तत्-श्रुत्वा-उद्विग्न-हृदया-जना:
that hearing, grieved at heart, the people
शोक-विमूर्च्छता:
in grief fainted

O Pareekshit! he related the death of all the Vrishnees, in detail. Hearing that, grieved at heart, the people fainted.


तत्र स्म त्वरिता जग्मु: कृष्णविश्लेषविह्वला: ।

व्यसव: शेरते यत्र ज्ञातयो घ्नन्त आननम् ॥१७॥


तत्र स्म त्वरिता जग्मु:
there, had, in haste gone
कृष्ण-विश्लेष-विह्वला:
by Krishna separated upset
व्यसव: शेरते यत्र
lifeless lay where
ज्ञातय:-घ्नन्त आननम्
the kinsfolk hitting the face

The kinsfolk went there in haste, where they all lay lifeless. Being separated from Krishna, they hit their faces in despair.


देवकी रोहिणी चैव वसुदेवस्तथा सुतौ ।

कृष्णरामावपश्यन्त: शोकार्ता विजहु: स्मृतिम् ॥१८॥


देवकी रोहिणी च-एव
Devaki, Rohini and also
वसुदेव:-तथा सुतौ
Vasudeva even, the sons
कृष्ण-रामौ-अपश्यन्त:
Krishna and Balaraama not seeing,
शोक-आर्ता: विजहु: स्मृतिम्
grief stricken, lost consciousness

Devaki, Rohini and also Vasudeva, on not seeing their two sons, Krishna and Balaraama, were stricken with grief, and lost their consciousness.


प्राणांश्च विजहुस्तत्र भगवद्विरहातुरा: ।

उपगुह्य पतींस्तात चितामारुरुहु: स्त्रिय: ॥१९॥


प्राणान्-च विजहु:-तत्र
life and gave up there,
भगवत्-विरह-आतुरा:
by The Lord's separation afflicted,
उपगुह्य पतीन्-तात
hugging the husbands, O Dear!
चिताम्-आरुरुहु: स्त्रिय:
funeral pyre ascended the women

Afflicted by the separation from The Lord, O Dear! They gave up their lives there and then. The women hugged their husbands and ascended the funeral pyre.


रामपत्न्यश्च तद्देहमुपगुह्याग्निमाविशन् ।

वसुदेवपत्न्यस्तद्गात्रं प्रद्युम्नादीन् हरे: स्नुषा: ।

कृष्ण पत्न्योऽविशन्नग्निं रुक्मिण्याद्यास्तदात्मिका: ॥२०॥


राम-पत्न्य:-च तत्-देहम्-
Balaraama's wives and his body
उपगुह्य-अग्निम्-आविशन्
clinging to, in the fire entered
वसुदेव-पत्न्य:-तत्-गात्रम्
Vasudeva's wives his body
प्रद्युम्न-आदीन् हरे: स्नुषा:
Pradyumna and others, Shree Hari's daughters-in-law
कृष्ण पत्न्य:-आविशत्-अग्निम्
Krishna's wives entered the fire
रुक्मिणी-आद्या:-तत्-आत्मिका:
Rukmini and others, on Him mind fixed

Balaraama's wives entered the fire clinging to His body, and Vasudeva's wives clung to his body as they entered the fire, Shree Hari's daughters-in-law did the same for Pradyumna and others, Rukmini and other wives of Krishna entered the fire with their minds fixed on Him.


अर्जुन: प्रेयस: सख्यु: कृष्णस्य विरहातुर: ।

आत्मानं सान्त्वयामास कृष्णगीतै: सदुक्तिभि: ॥२१॥


अर्जुन: प्रेयस: सख्यु:
Arjuna, of dear friend
कृष्णस्य विरह-आतुर:
Krishna's separation afflicted,
आत्मानम् सान्त्वयामास
himself consoled
कृष्ण-गीतै: सत्-उक्तिभि:
by Krishna's words (in Geetaa) the truthful verdicts

Arjuna, depressed on the separation of the most dear friend Krishna, consoled himself by singing the words of Krishna in the Geetaa, the truthful verdicts.


बन्धूनां नष्टगोत्राणामार्जुन: साम्परायिकम् ।

हतानां कारयामास यथावदनुपूर्वश: ॥२२॥


बन्धूनाम् नष्ट-गोत्राणाम्-
of the kinsmen, with perished progeny
अर्जुन: साम्परायिकम्
Arjuna, funeral rites
हतानाम् कारयामास
of the killed, got done
यथा-वत्-अनुपूर्वश:
as required, one after the other

Arjuna, got the funeral rites performed of the kinsmen who were killed, whose progeny had also perished, as required, one after another.


द्वारकां हरिणा त्यक्तां समुद्रोऽप्लावयत् क्षणात् ।

वर्जयित्वा महाराज श्रीमद्भागवदालयम् ॥२३॥


द्वारकाम् हरिणा त्यक्ताम्
Dwaarakaa, by Shree Hari abandoned
समुद्र:-अप्लावयत् क्षणात्
the ocean submerged instantly
वर्जयित्वा महाराज
except, O Great King!
श्रीमद्भागवत्-आलयम्
The Highly Honourable Lord's palace

O Great King! The city of Dwaarakaa, which was abandoned by Shree Hari, was instantly drowned by the ocean, except the palace of The highly honoured Lord.


नित्यं सन्निहितस्तत्र भगवान् मधुसूदन: ।

स्मृत्याशेषाशुभहरं सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गलम् ॥२४॥


नित्यम् सन्निहित:-तत्र
always is present there
भगवान् मधुसूदन:
The Lord Madhusoodana,
स्मृत्या-अशेष-अशुभ-हरम्
by remembering all evils destroying
सर्व-मङ्गल-मङ्गलम्
of all auspicious (things) most auspicious

The Lord Madhusoodana, The Killer of the demon Madhu, is always present there. Just its memory destroys all evils, which is the most auspicious of all auspicious things.


स्त्रीबालवृद्धानादाय हतशेषान् धनञ्जय: ।

इन्द्रप्रस्थं समावेश्य वज्रम् तत्राभ्यषेचयत् ॥२५॥


स्त्री-बाल-वृद्धान-आदाय
women, children, the aged and the others,
हत-शेषान् धनञ्जय:
from the killed, surviving, Arjuna
इन्द्रप्रस्थम् समावेश्य
to Indraprastha entered
वज्रम् तत्र-अभ्यषेचयत्
Vajra, there coroneted

Arjuna took along the women, children, and the aged, who had survived after the killing, and entered Indraprastha, and coroneted Vajra, Aniruddha's son, as the king.


श्रुत्वासुहृद्वधं राजन्नर्जुनात्ते पितामहा: ।

त्वां तु वंशधरं कृत्वा जग्मु: सर्वे महापथम् ॥२६॥


श्रुत्वा-सुहृत्-वधम् राजन्-
hearing of the kinsfolk killed, O King!
अर्जुनात्-ते पितामहा:
from Arjuna, they, the grandfathers,
त्वाम् तु वंशधरम् कृत्वा
you indeed the successor appointed
जग्मु: सर्वे महा-पथम्
went all on the great path

O King! Your grandfathers heard of the killing of their kinsmen from Arjuna. They, then, of course appointed you as the successor and all of them proceeded on the great path to the other world.


य एतद् देवदेवस्य विष्णो: कर्माणि जन्म च ।

कीर्तयेच्छ्रद्धयामर्त्य: सर्वपापै: प्रमुच्यते ॥२७॥


य: एतत् देव-देवस्य
who this of the God of the god's
विष्णो: कर्माणि जन्म च
Vishnu's exploits and advent
कीर्तयेत्-श्रद्धया-मर्त्य:
celebrates, with reverence, a mortal,
सर्व-पापै: प्रमुच्यते
of all sins is freed

A man, who celebrates with reverence, the exploits and the advent of Lord Vishnu, The Lord of the gods, is freed of all sins.


इत्थं हरेर्भगवतो रुचिरावतार वीर्याणि बालचरितानि च शन्तमानि ।

अन्यत्र चेह च श्रुतानि गृणन् मनुष्यो भक्तिं परां परमहंसगतौ लभेत् ॥२८॥


इत्थम् हरे:-भगवत:
in this manner, of Shree Hari, The Lord,
रुचिर-अवतार वीर्याणि
delightful descents, divine feats
बाल-चरितानि च शन्तमानि
infantile sports, and auspicious
अन्यत्र च-इह च श्रुतानि
in other (scriptures) and here, and heard,
गृणन् मनुष्य: भक्तिम् पराम्
recounting, a man, devotion highest
परम-हंस-गतौ लभेत्
of highest orders of ascetics attains

In this manner, a man who recounts the delightful descents, infantile sports and divine feats of Shree Hari, The Lord, heard of here, in this text, or in other scriptures, attains the highest devotion, which is the goal of the ascetics of the highest order.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे वैयासिक्यामष्टादशसाहस्र्यां पारमहंस्यां संहितायां एकादशस्कन्धे एकत्रिंश: अध्याय: ॥३१॥

इत्येकादश: स्कन्ध: सम्पूर्ण: ॥

॥ श्रीकृष्णार्पणमस्तु ॥


Thus ends the thirty-first discourse in Book Eleven of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
